Diner Reviews
  • "My gumbo was good but the portion was small considering the price. A little ritzy. Food presentation was excellent. I would go back on a Monday just to try the fried catfish. "

  • "Excellent and creative Sunday brunch menu. A very tasty spin on a old classic Hangtown Fry my favorite. Our party was four people and we each had something different off the menu. We were a little put off when we arrived at 10:30 am (opening). The staff had the music turned up while opening however I did not notice any noise issue's after we were seated. Prompt service, attentive wait staff. Highly recommend Pican, this was our third visit. I do want to stress that noise was not an issue, we were a party of seniors who like to chat and catch up and also have hearing issue's. Go for it! Robert"

  • "Chef Sophina Uong and Pastry Chef Mitchell Blanco are bringing Pican to new heights. The menu has more of the spicy, creative New Orleans Creole that puts other soul food restaurants to shame. The Thurs-only gumbo is amazing with its superb black roux, and the fried green tomatoes with pork filling and two chile-laden sauces was phenomenal for chileheads (seriously: at least 6.5 on scale of chile-hot 10)! Love that sweet cornbread and the grits are a must, far better than Brown Sugar. The desserts have jumped a full level under Blanco: his lime-coconut tart and bread pudding are as good as anything Melissa Chou/Aziza puts out!"

  • "All of the items on the menu are outstanding in flavor, uniqueness and presentation. There is a Southern flair in all the choices. The service is above what you would expect."

  • "Pican was recommended to us by a family member and WOW, what an experience! They exceeded our expectations from the moment we entered the door, and we're not that easy to impress. Our dinner experience was so exceptional, we came back for brunch the next morning. Try everything, it's all good :)"

  • "I selected Pican to celebrate my anniversary, but the menu had only 8 entrée, this includes vegan selections. The waiter stated the menu changes, this was a bad selection of entrees. My fiancee is new out here and I wanted him to experience a nice dinner in an upscale restaurant; we ended up leaving going elsewhere."

  • "Pican was delicious from start to finish. The sides were a bit small for the price but the entrees were appropriately sized and everything was well paired and excellently prepared and plated."

  • "Chef Uong has hit her stride and lifted Pican's food up to a new higher level. Her Creole butter sauces are divine with a spicy edge that is wonderful. Her gumbo was called "THE BEST" my gumbo-loving spouse has ever had--the black roux tasted phenomenal! Loved the lamb tasso salad; the pork belly lettuce wraps were good but a little too much Creole hot/sweet mustard threatened to overwhelm. Half-order of the crab/spiny lobster Thermidore was a perfect starter size for two. Desserts have vastly improved: lighter, much less sweet. Spouse is already asking when we can return! Service can be slammed here at peak times--be patient, the waitstaff are very good, just frantically busy."

  • "Pican's is a great place to get away and enjoy elegant southern cuisine. The ambiance is wonderful, it is not fast food, but is worth the expense. The catfish was wonderfully prepared, the seafood boil was seasoned perfectly, the beans and rice were perfect comfort food. And the dessert was chocolate that melted in our mouths. We enjoyed the food, the service, and the ambiance. A great place to get away for a special lunch."

  • "If you are hitting the acclaimed Paramount Theater for an event, the staff at the Pican makes early dining easy. There is a special room geared and staffed to seeing that your evening begins well and has you to the church on time. Everything at the Pican is handled with class and, in our case, a dollop of tasty sass. Great fun, intriguing menu and outstanding service."

  • "This was my second visit to Pican. The first wasn't so hot, but it was a few years ago. This time, the food was delicious. There was quite a long delay in the service, but the waiter politely explained the problem and made our appetizers complimentary, so no foul there. All in all a nice dinner out."

  • "What a gem! So fortunate to have stumbled upon Pican. Polite, energetic, attentive service. Outstanding food and drinks. Simply fabulous! Don't miss this one! Southe4rn favorites on the menu from the fried chicken, to mac 'n chs to vegan dirty rice."

  • "I fell in love with this restaurant. The ahi tuni was to die for. Subtle, nuanced flavors. The cocktails were exceptional. I had a manhattan. It was one of the best I've ever had and I've had a lot. The fried chicken was juicy and just perfect. A very hip and upscale restaurant."

  • "We had a reservation for Pecan and were seated in the bar by a very nice hostess who didn't seem to know where to seat us. It was what appeared to be an overflow area for the restaurant. Our server was tasked with tending to the entire bar was well as 6 tables that were set up for diners. He didn't have to time to adequately attend to all. He was hard to get service from and when he was at your table, he'd deliver what ever he was there to deliver than run off before you could ask for anything else. We waited well over and hour for our entrees and when they came, they were only so-so. For $18 I got 4 ribs that were not that great. My Mac & Cheese was watery and lacked depth and flavor. The fish was dry and overcooked."

  • "The food was pricey and the quality was mediocre. The four of us vowed never to go to Pican again."

  • "Our third visit to Pican...really strong after several years. Joined this time by a friend from San Francisco who, while having heard of Pican, hadn't yet made the venture to Oakland. His comments: "worth walking across the bridge!" A treat having this good a restaurant anchoring the Oakland restaurant landscape."

  • "I dont get to eat much soul food because my wife is vegan, but they had plenty of options for both. I had the fried chicken with mac n' cheese and she had the vegan dirty rice and we both enjoyed it."

  • "This is just what Oakland needs. Great food that is different, a beautiful interior, and service that you would expect at the Ritz. Just great."

  • "pretty ritzy looking place with a great-sounding menu. but fried green tomatoes were >meh< at best, fried chicken okay (had better), mac n cheese as a side also just ok. for the prices of these items expected a bit more wow."

  • "So my third time at Pican. The first two were stellar, all-around. I have recommended it to family, friends and tourists alike. This time I bring the boyfriend for his birthday and; meh. All the pieces were there except the food was not near the great experiences of the past. The tuna was perfect but everything else from the fried green tomatoes which had been a highlight in the past, to the pork chop with the giant overcooked mushy potato... Zoiks. So extremely disappointing that I am not even sure I can go back. New chef? Off night? For the price, there should be no such thing. I was so excited to introduce another diner and so let down."

  • "We had a pretty great overall experience here. Ordered the fried chicken and gumbo - both were excellent. However, after the initial check-in from our server after food was served, we didn't see her again until dessert menus were offered. Both my husband and I sat for 20 minutes - wine glasses empty - waiting for her to return so we could order another drink. Finally someone came by to at least clear our plates away, which we had been done for at least 10 minutes. I usually don't complain about service - to me it's one of the last things that matters if food and ambience are on par, but this was pretty bad. Giving it two stars because it seemed to be reserved to just our server in particular - others (hostess, bussers, etc.) were good. I"

  • "I had never been to this restaurant, but after purchasing my new Lexus, I received an invitation to dine at Picán. A friend and I went there not knowing what to expect. Boy were we given a great dining experience. The food, the atmosphere and the staff were all awesome. A nice piano player entertained us and the meal was heaven. I can't wait to go back. Next time I may use the valet parking, as that was the only little gliche in this dining experience."

  • "Enjoyed the atomsphere and the Gregory the waiter was great. Food is a bit pricey for "soul food" but it was delicious. I had one of the speciality drinks (Lavender Martini) which was quite taste. Thought the lavender might throw off the drink but it added a different kick to the drink. Went to the restaurant prior to attending a show at the Paramount Theatre. Timing was great; waiter made sure food was delivered in a timely manner as to not be late to the show. Would recommend this restaurant to attend. Restaurant also has a nice bar which I wouldl come back to try."

  • "The food was really great, but the service wasn't so great. Our waitress was beyond energetic... like possibly on something energetic. She didn't check on us one time after we got our food. I waited over 20 mins for my 2nd drink and when it came it was after we were done eating and the check came like 2 mins later. I had to ask for the drink three times,.. AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN COMP IT. Maybe it was a fluke or just the waitress but it was frustrating. This is my 2nd time there and we didn't have this problem the first time. I was also in a big group of over 10 peple so they were waiting on us hand and foot. It's almost like they pay little attention to the couples and a lot to the big groups. TIP HUNTING? or just a fluke?? not sure."

  • "From the moment you walk in, you'll be transported into a super friendly, hip and classy vibe. The cornbread will start your meal with such perfection, it's amazing it can get better from that point. But it does. Every dish has southern comfort food effects with a truly classy California cuisine twist Only trouble is HOW MUCH of everything one wants to eat off the menu. Sooo good and definitely a place to return to - like, once per week.... I like that I could eat my ribs with my fingers at a white cloth table. Super fun!"

  • "Pican has excellent southern-style food with a California "foodie" sensibility. A truly great brunch with a nice choice of dishes. Probably the best biscuits and gravy I've ever had! Will go back soon for lunch and dinner."

  • "My food was good but my wife's food was not. She was disappointed that meatloaf is not served every night. Also she noted that her fried chicken was greasy and not hot enough. This is the first time either one of us was disappointed in the food at your restaurant. Given the above it will be hard to bring my wife back to Pican again."

  • "The fried chicken is not to be missed. Somehow it was even better as cold leftovers the next day. Definitely order it with the truffle honey. The cocktail menu is rather nice as well. Great service from our waitress, and we were in and out in time to make it over to The Fox by showtime."

  • "Place has a great vibe. Wait staff is attentive. Food was very good. Fried chicken is the signature dish. Drinks are strong and tasty. Pricey but if you are okay with that, its a great place."

  • "Three of us had a late lunch at Pican. We were the last group in the restaurant but there was never a rush. Wine list not very extensive but the zin and merlot we had were very good with the food. Loved the cilantro in the lamb burger. If ever there was a comfort food above all comfort food it has to be the red beans and rice combo. Loved it."

  • "We have been there several times for lunch and dinner and always enjoyed it. On Sunday we went for brunch and it was equally outstanding. Very nice service and the food was very different; not the usual...the 'sexy' bacon is delicious. I don't think they should charge you an extra $1 for a little cup (2 tablespoons) of cranberry jelly to go on the biscuit, but oh well... Overall, very good experience."
