Diner Reviews
  • "Vibrant scene. Aesthetically pleasing environment, music in the background and very good food! I had the best cheesy grits ever!! A bit off on catfish ... It tasted old ... not fresh. Their version of beignets are one of the best "northern" versions I have had. Not NOLA level but good! Cocktails are balanced. Pitcher of Mimosas at $25 are not worth it for quality of ingredients used. Our peach mimosas were bland. Nice uptown location. The hostess on brunch duty on Sunday, 8/24 was very aloof and robot-like."

  • "I've been here for dinner and enjoyed it and can now say the same about their brunch. Try a side of the fried chicken with whatever you order. It's just as good as it is on their dinner menu."

  • "The location is great, there is an outside patio, the blood-orange mimosa was delicious, and the sexy bacon was to die for! I had the fried chicken egg sandwich and it was so good. But if you eat meat, you must have some of that sexy bacon."

  • "Part of dining out is to enjoy a tasty meal with friends or family with service. PICAN at brunch was a disappointment, not due to the kitchen but due to serving staff. There should always be someone on the floor checking in on guests. One should not have to wait an unreasonable amount of time to be waited on especially if the restaurant is not full ..with their order, for water, for the sides that were part of the meal, for syrup that should accompany the waffles or any other condiments. The food was delicious, great fluffy cheesy biscuits, chicken nicely seasoned, catfish well cooked, but the service was not a great match."

  • "Appetizers were spectacular. Lobster entre not remarkable, and desserts all show and no go. Drinks excellent, as were the waitstaff. Next time we will just go with the small plates, as four of them will make a meal."

  • "Amazingly well done food! Menu seemed a little different than listed on open table. A little limited. I had a great time out server was great and really knew the menu. Amazing cocktails and bourbon flight! My only dis-like was dessert. Food was amazing dessert was meh, reinvented pies had no connection to the originals. I am all for redoing classics making them look out if the box, etc. But there has to be a connection to the original in some way be it appearance or flavor profile. Desserts didn't do that at all. Fried green tomatoes still taste like fried green tomatoes only better. Banana cream pie that doesn't taste of banana but tastes like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich meh!"

  • "Creative menu, beautifully prepared, and professionally served. A first rate experience."

  • "This is my 2 ms time here so more of a combined review. First off the cocktails are mostly bourbon based which I love but a great mix and a great start to a great meal. Fried green tomatoes were perfect and my pork shank literally fell off the bone. My only complaint this time was the service was pretty average. We waited in the bar to get a cocktail for 10 minutes and was never able to get an order in so we sat down at the table. It took way too long to bring water and get ap and drink orders. Normally all this would make me mad and never go back because there are too many good restaurants to give them a 2nd try, but the 1st time I was there the service was perfect. Both times the food has been ridiculously good."

  • "So far this is the best Fried Chicken I've had in the bay area. They also gave it a nice touch with the truffle honey. The Lobster Thermador was well done, I expected it to be very rich and it was not. If only they can improve on their wine list and throw in some Vouvray. That was what I brought and it was perfect with this meal."

  • "We were a party of seven...all gave rave reviews for the brunch. According to my son, the catfish was tasty and cooked just right. He also enjoyed (and shared) the bourbon sampler. My oldest grandson woofed down everything and the burger he ordered lasted, oh, maybe a minute. My wife continually commented between bites how good her fried chicken eggs Benedict was. And the rest of us had fried chicken thighs one way or the other. Absolutely deeee lish; moist, tasty, and not overwhelmed by the batter like some other restaurants (who shall remain nameless but who's initials are KFC). While the entrees and appetizers (biegnets) were five star excellent, the so-called banana cream pie was overwhelmed by a sugar taste and it was dry."

  • "I am from a family with roots in Georgia and the South going back six generations, and never have I had grits as creamy and delicious as the ones here. The eggs were equally fine, and the entire brunch was excellent. We had outstanding service, including from the barman who came to give us a taste of some of their bourbons. I definitely will bring friends here again."

  • "The Bay Area is filled with so many somewhat good restaurants, but most are forgettable. Pican was such a wonderful experience. The staff was very warm and friendly and made the great suggestion that the 3 of us order family style to taste various dishes. Cocktails, appetizers, main dishes, and dessert were all memorable. There wasn't one item that was "average'', every dish was outstanding. And the best thing was how affordable the entire meal was including drinks. I can't wait to go back and experience another great dinner."

  • "So this is the second time I've eaten at Pican. First time was not so great as respects the wait service. I had a French waiter who was not a people person and it made the dinner experience somewhat frustrating. The food was good. I gave the waiter a tiny tip and had planned never to come again. Well I decided to try one more time. This time the waiter was very good. so funny and helpful and it made the experience a very positive one. What a dfference. Food was great too! They also paid attention to my food allergy and I find that a BIG PLUS!"

  • "Overall this resturant has the potential to be very ggod. The wait staff is not very attentive and informative. The prices are a bit excessive for lunch"

  • "My family and I went to celebrate my 30th on Thursday for lunch. Our server promptly took our drink orders and brought out the drinks, however it took over 25 minutes to take our order despite it being rather slow. We informed him we were going to eat family style ordering some apps first followed by some main dishes. All of the food came out at the same time sitting getting cold as we tried to quickly finish the apps. The food was great per usual but we walked away wondering if it was worth the high price given the terrible service. Thankfully during the meal the manager came by and corrected a few of the mistakes the server made in our order, having told the table the deviled egg dish came with enough pieces for the table."

  • "The food here was pretty good, but the service was clumsy or in attentive throughout dinner. One waiter spilled a glass of wine on one of us, another failed to bring a drink for another of us, another forgot our request for another napkin to wipe up some of the remaining spill. At these prices especially, they ought to be more coordinates and attentive!"

  • "Always a great meal, but even better people and service. The menu changes just enough every couple months to stay interesting, but it's the servers and family feel at Pican that keep us coming back. Attentive, but not down your throat. Formal, but not without great warmth. This also extends to the bar staff, who are as knowledgeable as they are engaging. This place just doesn't get the credit it deserves. Hoping this changes, one good review at a time."

  • "I went there for a special occasion with two friends that love good food. We were more than delighted with the quality of food and preparation. We order the braised greens, fried chicken, risotto seafood special. The cornbread was warm and so was the waitress. Can't wait to go back!!!"

  • "We decided to check out Pican after a recommendation from a friend. We could not have been more pleased with our dining experience. The food was fantastic and the atmosphere was great! Before dining we enjoyed a drink at the bar. The bartender made a recommendation for drink choices and they were awesome! Would definitely recommend Pican for anyone looking for great food and a great time!"

  • "We have been to Pican for Brunch, lunch, and dinner - all fantastic. The food is just terrific - one of the best restaurants in the Bay Area. And we have always had good service. The restaurant is a feast for the eyes as well. Going to Pican is a special treat for us."

  • "I'm always a little disappointed by something at Pican -- this time, the shrimps were not really fresh and had that faint ammonia tinge shrimp get, so it made me feel like the "special" was what they especially needed to get rid of. My companions really liked the steak and the risotto dishes, tho. But for the price I'd rather go to Flora or Camino. It was just very convenient to what we were doing next."

  • "Excellent high end Southern food with outstanding service from Jill. Cocktails are creative as well as classic. There are lighter options than fried chicken, such as a wonderful jambalaya risotto, but make sure someone at our table gets the chicken and is willing to share."

  • "My dinner companion was surprised by the interior, I had told her southern with a twist! She lover it, Crawfish Mac, Shrimp and Grits, Crab dip, and the Jambalaya were all very good. they have some veddy interestin' drinks, all-n-all T'was a good evening."

  • "Pican has a remarkable Bourbon bar, worth a long pre-dinner stop. Then the menu is fabulous. Portions are sometimes small, but they are always delectable contemporary takes on southern standards. The staff--both in the bar and in the dining room--were knowledgeable and pleasantly enthusiastic. The one entree that is always huge is the absolutely wonderful fried chicken--and when they box up the leftovers for tomorrow's lunch they add a little square of corn bread: a nice touch. While the vibe skews young urban professional, this is a lovely place to bring older out of town visitors to showcase Oakland's fine dining milieu--the valet parking is easy, and the sophisticated clientele is tolerant of all sorts of people."

Thank you so much for your hospitality. It's nice to have a great restaurants in our town Oakland! Great fried chicken and macaroni with cheese. Our server Jill she was a delightful lady. Great services."

  • "Wonderful ambiance as you enter, friendly staff, vibrant bar, inviting seating with great views of the kitchen. The whole package makes you feel like you are in an upscale Atlanta restaurant. Menu has nice variety, all in the southern style, with wonderful flavors. Our group had scallops, fried chicken, steak and pork shank, all which everyone loved. Fun appetizers to share . The mixed drinks favor brown liquor concoctions of bar favorites. Our 4th time here, and it seems to get better each time."

  • "We went at 7pm on a Monday night -very mellow. Ella Fitzgerald in the background, not too crowded, just very comfortable. The room is beautifully designed, and, most importantly, we loved the food! Mm, braised greens with the fried chicken were outstanding!"

  • "This was our 2nd meal here & we weren't disappointed. My wife had the fried chicken (which I had on our last visit) and it was moist & tasty once again, and smoked gouda mac & cheese was fab. I'd say skip the truffled honey for two extra bucks, though -- I don't think it adds much to the dish. I had the jambalaya risotto, which was also delicious and perfectly cooked. Not many restaurants do risotto very well. The appetizers were also great (especially the porkbelly spring rolls). Enjoyed our cocktails and desert too. Service was prompt and pleasant. It's pricey, so not an every week place to go, but a nice splurge for a special evening."

  • "I have been to Pican's several times and have always felt it was wonderful. The food is outstanding, and the mix of different tastes and textures is so suprising--- Shrimp with Grits--- Southern Fried Chicken served with honey! You will never be disappointed. The service is excellent, the staff friendly, and accomodating. This was my significant other's birthday and the staff made it special, without making it loud. He loved it and is ready for a return trip. When you dine here, you will feel like you died and ended up in Southern Heaven."

  • "The food here is absolutely incredible, it's definitely a place to try something new. For instance: I hate grits and anything that comes with it, but their shrimp and grits are sooooo amazing. I also cannot stand greens as well, but their beef braised greens are incredible. The lavender lemon drop drink is super yummy and they infuse the lavender on site. Truly amazing place, perfect for date night, girls night, or just a foodie night. The rib appetizer is an absolute must. Do not leave here without trying it. I usually order it for my meal (it used to be an entree, but they moved it to appetizer for some reason)."

  • "This establishment has been on my list of places to try. My party and I drove from San Mateo on a Friday evening. Although there was valet service, I parked directly across the street from the restaurant and paid a flat fee of $5. Great start. Upon entering, we noticed a very diverse clientele, wonderful ambiance and great vibe. We had the pleasure of being served by Jill. A wonderful lady with a great personality and spirit! We ordered the crab dip, fried chicken, pork shank, mac "n cheese and greens. Desert was banana cream pie. Every bite was wonderful and had us immediately discussing a return visit. Pican will now be on my regular restaurant rotation."
