  • Had a great birthday dinner at Pican

We loved our night out at Pican with 6 family members. The food and the service were excellent and the noise level was quiet enough that we could easily talk across the table and hear everyone. We had the fried chicken, the catfish, the lobster thermidor, and the jambalya. All were excellent, including the side of mac and cheese and truffle honey with the fried chicken. Our waiter was friendly and attentive explaining the menu and speciality drinks including non-alcoholic options, and recommending a wine to go with our dinner. A great night out and we will be back.

Party of three arrived on time and was promptly seated despite both the bar and restaurant being full. Our first encounter with our server Jill was when she was delivering a little birthday treat to the table next to us and she was singing a 80's disco song as a replacement for traditional happy birthday. Her service and energy was very refreshing. Our table enjoyed the crab and artichoke dip which was excellent followed by fried chicken, crisp & moist with creamy gouda mac and cheese. The fish special was mahi mahi over a bed of brussel sprout slaw, all was very tasty. I was disappointed that our party had previously made plans to dessert at a friends house near by because I really want to try the desserts. Just another reason to return.

Good spot for dinner if you're heading to the Paramount (1 block away). Appetizers and drinks were both delicious (fried green tomatoes in particular!). Jambalaya and fried chicken both were cooked really well but felt like they needed a little more seasoning/flavor to put them over the top. Great ambience and overall good service.

I really wanted to like Pican but the moment I walked in, the host was acting like we were not there. He did not greet us, even though we had rsvp. The place was not even that busy. Food was okay, the fried chicken benedict was good. The main waiter was pleasant. But I am not sure if I wanted to come back.

This was the second time we have gone to Pican. Celebrated our 10 year anniversary and it was delicious. The fried chicken is delicious. I had the porterhouse this time and it was delicious as well. Highly recommend trying the restaurant. The only downside was a slight lack of service. I'm a stickler for having my soft drink glass filled and I frequently had to ask for refills even though our server walked right past our table. I can understand not automatically filling the glass, but he would not even ask if I wanted more to drink. That was my ONLY gripe though, but it does bug me.

Friday was my fourth visit to Pican and the food was astonishingly better than before, although the menu is still pretty much the same. The slightly sweet fried eggplant appetizer astonished my tastebuds. The pork shank fell off the fork in succulent bites as it rested in the richest sauce ever. Excellent drinks from the bar, too (my fav-- Sazerac). Service a little too slow out of the kitchen, but attentive, personable staff. Stopped in later for a drink at the bar and enjoyed live, fun piano bar music and happy patrons.

I brought clients to Pican this week for a get together. The service was great. They enjoyed the cocktails, I was pleased with a Big Daddy, and a nice bottle of Malbec. The food was great, We had two apps which were terrific. My clients had the pork shank and the vegetable risotto, I had the Jambalaya risoto. Great time out. As a small bonus, I always seems to catch a local celebrity there.

Beyond the fried chicken and the grits, the food was a step above the local neighborhood joint but not outstanding. Portions were large. Parking was easy and I felt safe . Avoid the butterscotch pudding, it was more like butterscotch milk shake. The beignets were good but the lemon curd tasted like it came out of a prepared jar.

Very good food, especially the fried green tomatoes. The fried chicken was too greasy when it came out, but chicken cooked well. Mac and Cheese so-so. Salad was fresh and generous. Service excellent. This is a big place so no problem getting a table. My dinning partner was a veggie and had to think hard about what she could order.

This was my 3rd time here. The food was excellent but the service wasn't so great. They could have been short staffed, but it wasn't their best night. We ordered our food and they forgot our broccolini. After we received our dinner, the waitress did not check on us or asked us if we needed or wanted more drink or food. She brought us the dessert menu, but we were full and wanted to leave after that.

I have been here before and thought, "overrated" but I think I was not paying attention earlier. I took my cousin from Chicago here as he has some Georgian roots and I thought soul food would be a good choice. Before the food came, we had great service and great drinks - my cousin noted that this was the perfect spot. After dinner we all kind of just sat back and recounted our meals - we were a happy party of five. Go ahead and order something off the beaten path (Cat Fish a la Nantua) and be amazed. The place was surprisingly packed for a Tuesday night but that just made the point that this place really has something going on.

Pican's southern style food is very sweet and most dishes are (or appear to be from the menu) heavy. The jambalaya was good and the braised pork shoulder was excellent, but the green salad dressing, with pecans and currents was far too sweet. However, the dessert list looks lovely (we had the butterscotch pudding--not as good as 5's in Berkeley, but not half bad) and the list of bourbon's is amazing.

Our server, Christopher, provided the worst service I've ever received in a restaurant. Luckily, we were able to express our opinion about his inattentive and slow service in the $0.00 tip we left him on an $88.00 brunch check. As for the food, best described as marginal and overpriced, with atrociously overpriced drink offerings. NEVER AGAIN…even if someone else were paying!

This was kind of a mid-week, last-minute visit after normal dining hours (9:30 reservation). So the place was a lot less crowded than usual, and pretty quiet. But the staff was very relaxed and friendly, able to take time to chat a bit. It was my friend's first time, and he loved his steak and the crawfish mac 'n' cheese. My pork was super tender (falling off the bone) and tasty. And we really enjoyed the medjool date starter. All good!

I used to come here often for the great food, drinks, and service but this last visit was a disappointment. It wasn't terrible but the service and food were definitely sub-par for the price and area. There are so many better options within walking distance. The drinks were still good but the food was a disappointment. I had the fried green tomatoes, salt and vinegar dates, collard greens, and pork shank. All the dishes were consistently strangely sweet. I'm hoping that it was just a fluke that night because there was a show at the paramount but I probably won't be heading back there anytime soon.

Just moved from Boston to Oakland! We have eaten at Pican in the past when vacationing to CA and have enjoyed the food and the service! We had an 8pm reservation for four on a Monday night! Our waiter engaged us quickly and from there the service went down hill. We placed drink orders that sat on the bar and we're finally brought to the table after we finished our appetizers. Our entrees arrived minus one side our waiter forgot to place and our waiter then disappeared. We finally walked up to the hostess to ask where our waiter was and could we order more drinks. In a nutshell the kitchen was on their game with the dishes coming quickly and as usual the food was excellent. Service was disappointing and for a $250 spend we would expect more!

I had a wonderful birthday dinner on 10/11/14. I arrived before my guest who got detained in traffic. The wait staff were very attentive. Our meal was excellent. The fried green tomatoes were very good. I had the flat iron steak that was cooked to perfection! The side of kale was also excellent. My lavender cocktail was very good and usually I'm more of a straight vodka martini girl. The cabernet was great. My guest had the pork shank and was very happy with it (she eat the whole thing). The wait staff were excellent. We really enjoyed our dinner.

I think Pican was a great restaurant for a special occasion because things can really add up! The quality of the food was really good but entrees are between $20-30, and with a drink, starter and maybe dessert we are over $50. It was close to the Paramount where my friend and I later saw a movie, so we only had to park once. It is not a casual restaurant so no tee shirts.....

If you want the best southern fried chicken in the 'hood, go to Pican. My son and oldest grandson opted for more of Pican's deep fried thighs rather than dessert. When a 16 yo boy gives up dessert for chicken you got to know the chicken is that good. And it is...having had several pieces then and again just this Sunday on my second visit to Pican for brunch. Our guests had the chicken eggs Benedict and walnut waffle. Both were sumptuous servings and some of the Benedict went into a doggy bag for later (note, they don't have a dog). But the waffle disappeared among "mmmm good" sounds every bite. I can attest to "mmmm good" as I also had the waffle, which was crisp on the outside and moist and flavorful on the in. Highly recommended.

This was my wife and my first visit-we'll be back. The ambience was upscale, the food was very tasty, and the service was friendly, warm, and efficient. It reminded us of our pre-Katrina trips to restaurants in New Orleans! Our only issue is that with the hard wood floors, the piano music carries and, at least on our night, was a bit overpowering. It would be nice if the music was softer. Nonetheless, we look forward to our next visit. (and parking is easy!)
