Philippe Restaurant + Lounge
Hands down, one of the best!I am a foodie, no doubt about it. I went to Rome, Madrid & London almost entirely for the food. I've traveled the entire US in search of hidden gems- Philippe is one of them. I've been 2x and found out that even on a day when Philippe isn't there, the food manages to still adhere to his high standard. Started with goat cheese wraps- yummy! The thick juicy scallops seared with carrot puree & fried okra was perfectly balanced in flavour. The beef burgundy literally fell apart in my mouth, slowly braised and served with mac and cheese! What a combo! 2nd time, I tried the lobster tortellini & avocado cheesecake which were both great. But to top it all off, Philippe came out to check on the patrons and chat with us. We couldn't have been more thrilled. The food, exquisitely presented, was incredible, and the service excellent, professional, efficient, and personable. Restaurant was never full, which is unusual for a Thursday night at an upscale restaurant in Houston. My appetizer was fabulous, my halibut good, but nothing special. My husband had the escargot and flounder and found both to be good, but not great. Our friends said on a scale of 1-10 they would give it an 8; my husband and I said probably a 7. Probably need to go back and try other items for a fair review. We had the sweet green pea soup and seafood kabob offered, and carrot cake on the Power Lunch to be a good bargin for $20. For my femail client and for me this was a perfect portion, but for a man this portion might be a little small. Our waiter Oscar lived up to previous ratings and was expert in providing flawless service. The food was great from the appetizer sampler, the onion soup and the steak tartar. We ordered several fish dinners and all were flawless. The desert was the best Grand Marnier souffle we every had. I have traveled world wide and would rate this restaurant among the world's best. Open table had arrangements for flowers service that did not deliver--shame shame. This was totally unexpected. If you have a chance to go to Philippe Restaurant, RUN don't Walk. The food was exquisite as was the service and the second floor dining room. Each and every dish could have been a suprise. What we were able to finish was some of the finest, most innovative tastes and presentations that I have seen in a long time. While that may be just my humble opinion, and it is, I travel with work every other week nationally in major cities and am able to eat at some of the newest and best restaurants in the country. We were seated promptly, treated well by all the staff, and most importantly our food and drinks were great. The crowd was young-ish and the prices were low-ish. However we were served a delicious platter of individual sweets (for which we were not charged). That was a very pleasant surprise. When I checked the bill I noticed that I had not been charged for my vodka cocktail. I told the waiter, and he came back to the table with the same bill and said that honesty pays. My guest and I were quite impressed. Each time that this has happened at other restaurants they have always charged for the drink. The place had only one other table seated at that time. An apology for a waiter not knowing that a special item on the menu was salmon, not scallops is not enough when scallops are expected. Why should I pay for what I did not order? Scallops were on a regular menu, why not bring some to the table when 3 people dining spending $400? Why am I charged for the side dishes on the menu listed as "compliments?" Cancelled a second glass of wine before it arrived because it took so long that a desire for it had vanished. The manager greeted us and was able to get us a secluded table away from the rest of the guest so we could enjoy our night. And I do a lot of dining out. I would definitely rank Philippe among one of the finest places I have experienced in Houston. Try the garden variety martini. Tried the chefs special of the day which was one of the best most imaginative dishes i have had in a long time. I made the reservation in advance and the hostess offered personalized menus which I thought would be a nice touch and of course a birthday dessert. I requested a booth and we got that, but there were no personalized menus. When I asked about it the hostess advised me that they "don't do those anymore" which was surprising to me because I'd confirmed that the day before. Then the birthday dessert never came out. I spoke with the manager about my experience as this was my first time dining here and was very pleased with how Chris chose to resolve the matter.
