Walter Manzke's Petty Cash is a semi-authentic taqueria with myriad talent drawn from East LA, Baja and beyond. Petty Cash's menu features re-conceptualized street food classics driven by the best local, seasonal ingredients, rooted in multi-generational tradition and technique.

  • "I wouldn't say that this is the BEST, most authentic taco in LA, nor would I say it is the CHEAPEST taco in LA... however, it is a good "happy medium" if you want really delicious food without having to eat from a paper plate while sitting on the curb. The restaurant is very nice inside and is very active. They have a full bar with specialty cocktails and a long list of beers. Price-wise, you'll spend about $4 per taco --- the potato tacos are delicious and the best deal going (3 for $3.50, I believe) and a steak quesadilla will set you back about $9. We had multiple drinks, tacos, a quesadilla, and two desserts and spent less than $100 (incl. tip). Very happy with the dining experience."

  • "Restaurant has a nice open feel, vibrant and busy. It was well-attended on a Tues. night. Staff was helpful. Bar serves fun drinks but compared to cocktails available nearby they are $2-$4 more than average. Tacos range from 4.50-6.50 a piece. Al Carbon was excellent, the cochinita pibil was oddly sedate, the fish was excellently cooked but needed some stronger flavors. Tacos come a la carte - no sides. Lots of ceviche, and fun chocolate crickets. You can have the same meal, but without the "scene", at nearby Tinga for about $15.00 less per person, and at the end of the day, unless you're going for the scene, it makes Petty Cash priced too high. It's trying to be a middle-ground restaurant, but the portion/price ratio is not right yet."

  • "We have been trying to get to petty cash for over a year now. We ended up sitting at the bar which is first come first serve. The bartender Nick was great. He gave us tips on some of the best dishes to try seeing how it was our first time visiting. The ceviche and tacos were great. My favorite was the pork belly taco. How could you go wrong. Would definitely go back"

As a rule I CANNOT stand community tables unless we're dealing with a crawfish boil or a bbq, so if I had to say anything "negative" about Petty Cash this would be it. That being said, I absolutely love this place. The Cauliflower Nachos are amazing- vegetarian or no. Keep up the good work. "

  • "Great atmosphere and great food. Menu is simple but effective. Came 1x before with a large group and we didn't like that the tacos come out in groups of types of tacos ordered (IE all the carne asada on one plate, chicken on another, etc) which made it confusing to send the correct tacos to their owners. Some of our friends didnt get their food because others accidentally ate it. Even if it makes it easier on kitchen staff, it's confusing for patrons and a hassle for waitstaff. Also CHANGE THE HAPPY HOUR (hora feliz) TIMES! Who can make it to a 5-6pm HH? I work close by on SM Blvd & La Brea, most people get off at 6pm but even if I was off at 5, the traffic alone makes it difficult to truly enjoy that happy hour. 6-7 is better!"

  • "I am not a fan of Mexican food. In fact I have only ever been to one that I have enjoyed up until I went to petty cash, now there are 2. The food was light, delicat, fragrant, nicely presented and quite tasty. The wait staff were very attentive and friendly. I would recommend all their tacos but the octopus one in particular. "

  • "The three of us really enjoyed our evening here. The staff was wonderful accommodating a reservation change and a special seating request with ease and grace. The drinks were fantastic, well made and quickly served by two careful and smiling bartenders. It was crowded and a bit loud that Sunday night and we thought there might be a few hiccups...Mollie, our waitress was sharp, attentive and fun. The machaca quesadilla was unavailable after I ordered, so the attentive manager came by to apologize and suggested pork shoulder quesadilla...it was amazing. A simple thing like chips and guacamole are beyond excellent and will definitely come back for the ceviche tostada and the amazing grilled octopus taco."

  • "Decided to celebrate Cinco de Mayo a night early & were thrilled Petty Cash was avail. Had 9:30p res, @ 9:37p, friend called & said mgr said if we weren't all seated NOW they wouldn't let us in (15 min grace?). Upon arrival, told kitchen was closing at 9:45p & rest doors @10p! Rushed along w/waitstaff hovering to take order AS BEING SEATED (inc for those not yet arrived). At least 10 other tables still dining, so very odd. Out of fish, beef, & 2 other items; wld go bk & forth to get kitchen approval/availabilities! Waitstaff frustrated & mgr, no where to be found. How does a Mexican restaurant not prepare for Cinco de Mayo, & run out of food, not have enough staff, and offer 9:30p reservations & expect diners to be shoo'ed off in 1/2 hour!"

  • "We had a birthday dinner at this restaurant last night, which was our second time here, and due to our group size we were seated in the back next to the shuffleboard table. What a mistake! Several guys were playing shuffleboard and slamming the pucks as hard as possible, which sounded like guns being fired in an echo chamber, and after everyone jumping each time a puck was hit, we asked to be relocated to the front. The food was good and unique - but not our type of food as there were lots of seafood based meals with more of an eclectic (healthy) spanish menu, which may be appealing to many and unappealing to others. The service was good and very accomodating to our needs, and the decor is really LA hip, young and interesting. "

  • "It was fun and all but I didn't think that it was as good as it could have been and found it to be a bit of a let down. The cocktail I ordered was their take on a negroni, it was a very small portion but did have a nice smokiness from the mescal. Food wise, the pig ear nacho's were good but found the raw egg in the middle unnecessary. The taco's were good and the table sauces / salsa's were very tasty. It wasn't a bad experience but didn't blow my hair back either. I give it a, eh."

It was a loud place so I'm sure it's hard for the waitress to always hear yet she did a good job. Food came out quickly and over all experience was great. Unique dishes and tasty. However the guacamole wasn't the best. I've had a many better guacs!1 I'll be returning "

  • "We were so excited to try this place as it is walking distance from our place but sadly, it was awful. Cool atmosphere and it stopped there. The service was terrible. We saw our waitress once to take our order and once to leave the check. We ran out of water, I needed to return my meal as it arrived cold and not as described (it said a quesadilla with zucchini blossoms and there were absolutely none in sight! Just a cut up piece of zucchini... Nothing special at all!) we also wanted more drinks but never got to order them. When the waitress came to drop the bill I told her about my quesadilla and she took it to the kitchen and then returned saying "there are blossoms in there." They kept it on the bill and made no efforts. We won't be back"

  • "This restaurant could be a real treasure (great location, atmosphere, good service), but it needs work. A few suggestions: (1) add more non-alcoholic drinks options -- how can a Mexican restaurant have only one agua fresca?; (2) improve the chips, which aren't so good -- this is odd since the tortillas are great; (3) new-fangled ceviche is fine but only if it's better than traditional styles of ceviche; it wasn't here; (4) work on the tacos -- the carnitas really needs work. In a town with phenomenal Mexican food, this just didn't cut it."

Other than that spiciness, the food was pretty flavorless. The drinks were great, but ridiculously expensive for what you get. Thi would be a fun place to go if you just want to have beer and chips. Even their guacamole was underwhelming."

  • "Love the tacos. Good prices. Host was very friendly. Restaurant was crowded (Saturday night primetime) and he took the time to visit us at our table, give us an overview / hightlights about the place and take drink orders so we didn't have to wait for our waiter to come free. His helping out like this made for a nice introduction to the place. Nothing worse than sitting down and not having a waiter come by for drink orders for 10 minutes. In restaurants that are busy it's not the fault of the waiter - but I really appreciate the service assist from the host. One thing to know about - a lot of communal tables. (I'm fine with it but fyi) and some stools / benchs with no back support."
