A word from Petty Cash Taqueria
Walter Manzke's Petty Cash is a semi-authentic taqueria with myriad talent drawn from East LA, Baja and beyond. Petty Cash's menu features re-conceptualized street food classics driven by the best local, seasonal ingredients, rooted in multi-generational tradition and technique.

Featuring urban elements such as hand-painted murals by local street artist RETNA, a back room with shuffleboard, and picnic style tables and bench seating which lend to a relaxed and playful communal dining experience. The street art meets street food vibe channels the spirit of Tijuana circa 1986 meets 2013. The equally spirited cocktail program by Executive Beverage Director Julian Cox features unique craft cocktails on draft, eclectic Mexican spirits and a beer cellar.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "This is the second time visiting here and probably the last. Through the tacos - carne asada and al pastor - were very good, the salad and the Brussels sprouts were not great at all. It is extremely loud in the restaurant. Don't go with a group because you'll never hear what anyone is saying."

  • "I wish I was already a regular. Fantastic food. Best Margarita ever... wanting more. Soon."

  • "Food amazing but loud rock n roll made it a bit hard to relax and enjoy. Cocktails were awesome."

  • "With the exception of the dorados tacos, which were bland, the food was outstanding. Liked the pastor, mushroom and grilled octopus tacos. Also liked the boom.com appetizer served with great guacamole. The add in of sea urchin was a good treat."

  • "The cauliflower nachos and ceviche were both delicious - the tacos (we tried 3 different ones) were all so-so. Drinks were very innovative. Very noisy on a Saturday night."

  • "This place has a great drinks and tequila choices. The tacos were decent, but nothing to write home about. The al pastor was super salty! Very goo cauliflower nachos and shrimp ceviche tostada."

  • "If a single star means great, and 5 means exceptionally so then the 5 I gave Petty Cash, I meant. This is a truly fantastic, creative, fun spirited place. The food is top shelf without the elite hoo hah. Yes!"

  • "Had people in from outta town and we had a blast! The food was great. The drinks were awesome."

  • "I wouldn't say that this is the BEST, most authentic taco in LA, nor would I say it is the CHEAPEST taco in LA... however, it is a good "happy medium" if you want really delicious food without having to eat from a paper plate while sitting on the curb. The restaurant is very nice inside and is very active. They have a full bar with specialty cocktails and a long list of beers. Price-wise, you'll spend about $4 per taco --- the potato tacos are delicious and the best deal going (3 for $3.50, I believe) and a steak quesadilla will set you back about $9. We had multiple drinks, tacos, a quesadilla, and two desserts and spent less than $100 (incl. tip). Very happy with the dining experience."

  • "I had dinner here with a friend and it was a wonderful experience. The food was different but extremely tasty and the different drinks were outstandingly delicious. I will definitely return."

  • "$4 for 1 silver dollar size taco, and margaritas filled only 3\4 full. Bit of a scam. We wound up paying $60 each for very basic Mexican food."

  • "Everything from the drinks to the appetizers to the todos were delicious. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because it is a little pricey for what you get"

  • "Restaurant has a nice open feel, vibrant and busy. It was well-attended on a Tues. night. Staff was helpful. Bar serves fun drinks but compared to cocktails available nearby they are $2-$4 more than average. Tacos range from 4.50-6.50 a piece. Al Carbon was excellent, the cochinita pibil was oddly sedate, the fish was excellently cooked but needed some stronger flavors. Tacos come a la carte - no sides. Lots of ceviche, and fun chocolate crickets. You can have the same meal, but without the "scene", at nearby Tinga for about $15.00 less per person, and at the end of the day, unless you're going for the scene, it makes Petty Cash priced too high. It's trying to be a middle-ground restaurant, but the portion/price ratio is not right yet."

  • "We have been trying to get to petty cash for over a year now. We ended up sitting at the bar which is first come first serve. The bartender Nick was great. He gave us tips on some of the best dishes to try seeing how it was our first time visiting. The ceviche and tacos were great. My favorite was the pork belly taco. How could you go wrong. Would definitely go back"

  • "Customer service at this restaurant was excellent. The food was just ok when it comes to the regular Mexican dishes like black beans and or tacos. Their specialty items like the cauliflower nachos and brussel sprouts were great. I would definitely dine here again if in the neighborhood."

  • "We had to flag down the waiter at least 10 times. We had no patience, and seemed extremely aggravated every time we asked for something like salt. The food I had was tough and fatty. It was a total waste of money."

  • "Food is great, drinks are terrific. As a rule I CANNOT stand community tables unless we're dealing with a crawfish boil or a bbq, so if I had to say anything "negative" about Petty Cash this would be it. That being said, I absolutely love this place. The Cauliflower Nachos are amazing- vegetarian or no. Keep up the good work. "

  • "Great atmosphere and great food. Menu is simple but effective. Came 1x before with a large group and we didn't like that the tacos come out in groups of types of tacos ordered (IE all the carne asada on one plate, chicken on another, etc) which made it confusing to send the correct tacos to their owners. Some of our friends didnt get their food because others accidentally ate it. Even if it makes it easier on kitchen staff, it's confusing for patrons and a hassle for waitstaff. Also CHANGE THE HAPPY HOUR (hora feliz) TIMES! Who can make it to a 5-6pm HH? I work close by on SM Blvd & La Brea, most people get off at 6pm but even if I was off at 5, the traffic alone makes it difficult to truly enjoy that happy hour. 6-7 is better!"

  • "Food was great but tacos are way too expensive for what they are"

  • "I am not a fan of Mexican food. In fact I have only ever been to one that I have enjoyed up until I went to petty cash, now there are 2. The food was light, delicat, fragrant, nicely presented and quite tasty. The wait staff were very attentive and friendly. I would recommend all their tacos but the octopus one in particular. "

  • "The three of us really enjoyed our evening here. The staff was wonderful accommodating a reservation change and a special seating request with ease and grace. The drinks were fantastic, well made and quickly served by two careful and smiling bartenders. It was crowded and a bit loud that Sunday night and we thought there might be a few hiccups...Mollie, our waitress was sharp, attentive and fun. The machaca quesadilla was unavailable after I ordered, so the attentive manager came by to apologize and suggested pork shoulder quesadilla...it was amazing. A simple thing like chips and guacamole are beyond excellent and will definitely come back for the ceviche tostada and the amazing grilled octopus taco."

  • "You can't beat the food and drinks here. Really outstanding. Friendly, approachable service. Had a reservation and was seated right away -- always a plus. Also, we had asked for a quiet table (it's hard to hear in the main area) which they accomodated with ease. Two thumbs up. A treasure for LA."

  • "Food was good, but service was something that could have been improved upon. It took a while for waiter to take appetizer order. Then it took almost 20 minutes to get Guac. Never got asked if I wanted a second drink. I probably would have, because the margarita was really tasty! "

  • "New place and it is apparent by the crowd and lack of walk-in availability. Make a reservation!! Drinks were really good. The food was just good. The quesadilla was a good portion just contained a ton of butter. $6 each for street tacos? Really? It was good, I'd return at some point."

  • "Innovative, delicious, fun. Limited menu makes sure service is fast, but still diverse enough to have something for everyone. Sort of has the feel of a taco truck lot, but with an artisanal flare. Service was quick and super friendly. Get there early, it crowds up fast even though the space is huge! "

  • "The food and service was really good, Guacamole great, the brussel sprouts amazing! but the noise level was so high that I could not have a conversation and had to yell the whole time. My voice was hoarse the next day!"

  • "Decided to celebrate Cinco de Mayo a night early & were thrilled Petty Cash was avail. Had 9:30p res, @ 9:37p, friend called & said mgr said if we weren't all seated NOW they wouldn't let us in (15 min grace?). Upon arrival, told kitchen was closing at 9:45p & rest doors @10p! Rushed along w/waitstaff hovering to take order AS BEING SEATED (inc for those not yet arrived). At least 10 other tables still dining, so very odd. Out of fish, beef, & 2 other items; wld go bk & forth to get kitchen approval/availabilities! Waitstaff frustrated & mgr, no where to be found. How does a Mexican restaurant not prepare for Cinco de Mayo, & run out of food, not have enough staff, and offer 9:30p reservations & expect diners to be shoo'ed off in 1/2 hour!"

  • "We had a birthday dinner at this restaurant last night, which was our second time here, and due to our group size we were seated in the back next to the shuffleboard table. What a mistake! Several guys were playing shuffleboard and slamming the pucks as hard as possible, which sounded like guns being fired in an echo chamber, and after everyone jumping each time a puck was hit, we asked to be relocated to the front. The food was good and unique - but not our type of food as there were lots of seafood based meals with more of an eclectic (healthy) spanish menu, which may be appealing to many and unappealing to others. The service was good and very accomodating to our needs, and the decor is really LA hip, young and interesting. "

  • "This was the second time I've gone there and it was even better than the first. The guacamole was sensational, and so was the shrimp ceveche tostado. Loved the Octopus tacos and the pulled pork and pork belly tacos too. The churro puffs for dessert were orgasmic!!"

  • "We popped in after an evening of art and culture to find ourselves in an upbeat buzzing atmosphere. We really enjoyed our evening and the food and margaritas were fantastic. I highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "It was fun and all but I didn't think that it was as good as it could have been and found it to be a bit of a let down. The cocktail I ordered was their take on a negroni, it was a very small portion but did have a nice smokiness from the mescal. Food wise, the pig ear nacho's were good but found the raw egg in the middle unnecessary. The taco's were good and the table sauces / salsa's were very tasty. It wasn't a bad experience but didn't blow my hair back either. I give it a, eh."
