Diner Reviews
  • "Suspend any negative thoughts about high prices and small plates and just allow yourself to wallow in unique bursts of flavor. The small plates are small, but the imaginative combinations of ingedients are huge. The full size entrees are easily large enough to share. Our kale salad, octopus and chicken were outstanding. The waitstaff are top of their game. GO!"

  • "After reading a great review, I was eager to try Petruce et al. The food did not disappoint. Almost everything our group of four had was excellent. In particular, it was great to have a chef doing interesting things with vegetables. However, I would never go again. The noise was literally deafening. My ears still rang the next day. We were unable to talk with our friends, so the hour long wait between the first and second courses felt like torture. It was a miserable evening, which is a pity in light of the excellent food."

  • "From start to finish every dish delivered. The cucumbers with blueberries and cheese curds was to die for!!"

  • "Truly amazing people and food. Couldn't be better."

  • "The best place in Philly. Hands down. Read a 3 Bells review. Made a reservation. Waited a month. Ate like there was no tomorrow. Loved. Every. Second. Of. It. I have already told some friends about this place and insisted that they go. Get the Summer Squash or octopus if it's still on the menu. They change it frequently. And look for me with the big smile on my face!"

  • "Didn't think it was that great. Very limited menu... Like they were trying too hard."

  • "This was the second time my wife and I went to Petruce Et Al, and it was still great- perhaps even better. The menu remains very interesting, with some favorites and new things, the food is terrifically matched, highlighting flavors and textures in just the right way, and the service is very good, too. I very highly recommend visiting."

  • "We had one of the best meals of the year here--the food, drinks and ambiance were absolutely spot on. We ordered way too much food and still ate every bite because it was so delicious."

  • "The food was outstanding. Appetizers, side dishes, and entrees were equally done well. Presentation, spices, sauces all complemented the food. I will highly recommend Petruce Et Al."

  • "We had a an absolutely delicious meal: chicken liver, sweet potatoes, lasagna, chicken followed by a chocolate dessert with roasted marshmallow. Absentee service was the only glich to the evening."

  • "After '3 bell' rating, was expecting to be wowed and found everything perfectly palatable but nothing that was spectacular by any stretch. Average or above average."

  • "Hip, new spot for dining. Atmosphere inviting and conversational, even with the moderate level of noise-guests were having fun and talking. Bar area nice to sip the tasty cocktails. Enjoyed the small plates sweet potato and hiramasa, as well as the medium plates octopus and lasagna. Caution-small plates are very small. Chocolate torta and blueberry mochi were a nice finish. We avoided the bread as mentioned by previous diners. Lasagna was the table favorite (substantially sized), with the hiramasa a close second favorite. Wait staff seemed a bit rushed, but knowledgeable and helpful. Tim-you were the best, seated us as requested and impressed my foodie friend. Well done!"

  • "what a fabulous new spot. food is innovative, but still grounded in basics, like lasagna or chicken livers! best restaurant we have eaten in for a while. Not one dish wasn't great including soft serve ice cream for dessert."

  • "This new restaurant features small, medium and large plates designed for sharing, but individual entrees are easily accomplished. Dinner fare was imaginative, creative and outstanding. Noise level could have been lower for dinner though as it is seems they are attempting to cater to the young urban demographic in this center city neighborhood."

  • "I had the best meal that I have had in a long time in Phila. at Petruce. I have been to Le Cheri, Vernick, Serpico and Laurel and none were as good as Petruce. Food was very creative without being weird. Everything we ordered was delicious. Lots of attention to detail, like little, delicious kernels of pancetta around the chicken and grits. Lasagna to die for. Very different but wonderful. Cost was lower than I expected. You can order some dishes to share making it actually reasonable for the quality. Can't wait to go back and try more things. Going to order the pork next time which my friend ordered. Just don't like the dark dining room especially on a beautiful summer night but that's minor."

  • "lovely booth table near the ovens so we could watch the cooks which we both enjoyed. Great ambiance. The head lettuce salad was excellent--very nice dressing! Had two other small plates: sweet potato--also very nice, and chicken liver--also good. Medium plate was the lamb ribs--those were excellent but the potato or corn sticks that came with them were dull. Large plate was the chicken and that was also excellent. Great sauces. Overall lovely experience."

  • "We went to Petruce et al after reading a wonderful review in the Philadelphia Inquirer. We arrived early and there was no opportunity to seat us before our 7:30 reservation so we went for a walk and returned at 7:25. Still no room so we went to the only seat at the bar to wait. Had an interesting and seductive variation on a Manhattan while waiting. At 7:50--twenty minutes after our reservation we were shown to our table. The wait staff was very attentive, initially; and out appetitizers came out very rapidly. But then we waited 45 minutes for our entree. Now, the food was excellent. Wonderful arrangement of textures and flavors. But the mismatch of service was not what I would expect for meal with wine and bar drinks topping $150!"

  • "food was great. Ordered the octopus (awesome), lasagna (good) and whole fish (excellent). only drawbacks...they charge for basket (literally 4 slices)of bread (nobody does that)...and our waiter was extremely pompous...kind of attitude that my friend and I looked at each other w/ raised eyebrows as soon as he walked away. Acted like "your lucky to be here"...instead of "it's nice to have you here.." Thought for a sec we were at Vernick."

  • "I almost booked Fitler, but tried this instead - and I am (and my guests were) impressed. The food was excellent and came out at a nice pace - we asked for plates of varying sizes, and the team coordinated it well. The taste and textures were very good, and I loved the pork shoulder. The wine menu is skimpy and not exciting - that needs work. The waiter was efficienct but had a bit of "snark", the latter not really too much of a negative. I will do again. The price matched the quality."

  • "The food service and wait staff exceeded our expectations. Now if you could lower the music just a little it would improve the ambience be cause your guests won't have to speak so loudly across a small table"

  • "We had a wonderful dining experience at Petruce Et Al. The food was plated creatively and tasted wonderful. The staff was very professional and explained the tiered menu system clearly. The only down side was the cost of Wine. When I looked up the cost of some of the bottles and glasses later they were nearly a 300% mark up. Yikes! This was surprising because I found there draft beer, mixed drinks and specialty drinks to be reasonable priced."

  • "I don't review on opentable but had to make a quick note b/c I was that impressed. I have been twice in a week b/c it's that good. Delicious food. Outstanding service. Top new restaurant in Philly in my opinion. Recommend to anyone and everyone."

  • "Petruce might be your cup of tea if you like everything grilled. To us, the grill taste was too much of a good thing. Every dish we tried was overwhelmed by smokey grill flavor, from the roasted carrots, the chicken and even the bread. Occasionally some interesting flavors snuck through the smoke, but most were lost. We did like the size options on the menu, although the chicken portion could have been smaller (and lower priced). Also, the spacing between tables made for a comfortable dining experience."

  • "Outstanding food and service. The Quail was best ever eaten and I've had a lot of quail. Outstanding attention by Tim for wine selections. Only negative was our table near some sort of service door that was constantly being used by staff and had a squeak that reminded you of fingernails over the chalkboard(guess that dates me."

  • "We loved Petruce! Roasted carrots with Harissa sauce and baby lettuces with crunchy chick peas and fava beans were both creative and delicious. Get a side of bread! Chewy, charred and great with Harissa sauce. One disappointment was sea bream to share. Too many bones and I actually choked on one and some meat clung to bones and not enough to eat. Next time I am trying the steak. It looked divine and I am not a meat lover. Wine list short but interesting. Friendly server. Cool, dark vibe in back by kitchen. A little hard to see what we were eating..."

  • "The food is excellent. Of particular note: the sweet potato and the large fish--sea bream the night we dined. Service needs polishing. Dishes brought out too quickly. No room at the table. The charge for bread is annoying. The constant hovering to clear dishes equally annoying."

  • "it has truly been awhile since i was really excited about the inventiveness of a chef in philadelphia. i've been to a lot of restaurants that make good dishes...and i go back to them to eat those dishes. but petruce was different: i tried things i was apprehensive about, and they were all amazing. the flavors and composition of each of the seven dishes we had were spot-on (head lettuce, sweet potato, beef tartare, chicken liver, lamb ribs, chorizo, and spanish mackerel). i moved to philly in 2001, and this is one of the best meals i've ever eaten in the city."

  • "The recent success and rave reviews have not stopped this restaurant to exceed the expectations of diners that return. Petruce et al is maintaining a high standard and is continuously striving to be better. Long overdue open fire and wood fired oven cooking in Philadelphia. Excellent, possibly the best wine and cocktail program in the city."

  • "Ambiance not much for an expensive but excellent meal. Background music was much too loud and more suitable for a burger joint. Music and overall noise level will keep us from returning"

  • "If you are a foodie from Philly, you will recognize many of the faces at Petruce et al. Our first dining experience was awesome. Innovative perfectly executed menu and a fabulous bar. Couple that with some of the best front of house staff in Philly and you get a winner of a dining establishment. Already booked my second (and third) reservations."

  • "A lovely new venue for fine dining in Philly! We were seated where we could see the wood fire oven and orders passing by on their way to happy diners. Tim, the wine guy and partner at Petruce was a highlight. He guided us to fine wine selections and was a delight."

  • " Delightful, attentive staff and fabulous presentations. The lasagna was hampered by the burned bottom of an otherwise perfect meld of flavors. The small dishes were spectacular. Our favorite, though, was the quail - a succulent, beautiful dish. Although the physical appearance of the restaurant is not the greatest, there was tremendous atmosphere thanks to the attentiveness and friendliness of the staff. "

  • "We had a delicious meal here. The chicken liver and rhubarb was fantastic; ditto the pork shoulder. There is a selection of unusual wines by the glass, and the waiter gave helpful advice about which ones might suit our tastes and food choices. The meal was well worth the price."

  • "Great food, inexpert service, uninteresting wines at high prices; overall disappointing evening. The staff recommended wines were not very good. Three of the wines we ordered were boring--a rose and two reds. The ciders were over priced. While we are used to small portions, these were particularly small. My salad, which was lovely, consisted of four leaves, a sad little bundle in the middle of the plate."

  • "Small plates to be shared ~ Lamb ribs magnificently prepared, fall off the bone delicious. Steak Tatare a perfect combination of capers and freshness,Octupus charred to perfection~ Interesting use of seasonal vegetables. Everything was delicious. Small plates definitely more creative and tastier than Entrees. Really wonderful Restaurant . Caring owner was on the floor , overseeing all! Great addition to the Philly Food scene! We will return~Which is rare, since there are sooo many amazing Restaurants to try in Philadelphia, which we have not experience!!"

  • "Didn't love it and was expecting to after great reviews. A misnomered dish, a dish that had some heat but didn't mention it on menu, small plates are surely that, didn't like 5 of the wines I tasted. When I looked at the menu there was nothing that called to me to choose. Eh...."
