Diner Reviews
  • "Second visit surpassed the first! Creative, delicious food and welcoming , efficient staff."

  • "Our party of four foodies dove into the Petruce menu with gusto and thoroughly enjoyed the delicious and inventive cuisine. However, we did feel that the small menu and meager wine inventory limited our choices. We hope that the continued success of Petruce will encourage the brothers to expand the menu and buy a few more cases of wine. Service was prompt and friendly unlike other reviews. Loud rock music, however, competed with normal conversation and marred an otherwise delightful evening."

  • "It was hard to choose from among all the interesting choices. Two of us shared two small dishes and two medium dishes and we each had our own dessert Each dish had a variety of interesting ingredients. The octopus with conge was my favorite. We sat in the back. The noise level in the front was very high."

  • "The food was absurdly good. Surpasses Zahav as my favorite restaurant in Philly."

  • "Having recently been to Le Cherie and Tremont, we were excited to have another experience at that level. It seemed to fall short. Offering us complimentary still or sparking water was like telling us that tap water was free. Meal was solid but to us definitely not 3 bells. Food was good but we did not appreciate any wow factor. Well located for Forrest Theater. We liked the chicken live but Hiramasa needed some bread or some accompanyment. Three of our 5 dishes showed up literally 4 minutes apart requiring us to move things around table to find room. Pork shoulder had a very tasty summer bean cucumber salad but it did not blend with the pork. Black bass was very good and breakfast theme. Overall, it was good and solid..nothing special B+"

  • "We ordered most of the menu and ate it tapas style, not one bad thing. Drinks were a bit on the pricey side, but overall a great meal"

  • "Although upon seating at a recent 6pm reservation we informed waitress we had 7:30 show to make they were unable to get us out by 7:15 at which point we cancelled main course. Apologies by staff were made but no offer to at least comp the cocktails. Enuf said!"

  • "We dined this week at Petruce before a theater performance. We had no trouble with timing, our server had asked about our plans, and we were finished in time for the curtain-raising. The menu is simple - the dishes are named for the main component. The choices are listed by plate size (think tapas) & are served when ready. The presentation is beautiful & only outshined by the flavor! The dishes are completely unique. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit."

  • "We love going to Petruce, especially because of Tim, the co-owner/somelier. He has an amazing palate, and we love to order several small plates and ask him to choose wines for us. With the chicken liver mousse he introduced us to the German Elbling varietal, a lovely Cava with the squash. An interesting, complex Bordeaux Merlot blend accompanied the duck, while a dry, complex Austrian Rose for the squid/chorizo plate. Finally, a tawny port with the chocolate torta dessert! We sat near the kitchen and were fascinated by the attention to detail in the preparation and delivery. Highly recommended!"

  • "My husband i dined at Petruce on Saturday night. We went early for a drink at the bar. Drinks were excellent. We were seated on time across from the ovens/hearth and all the cooking action. The menu is extremely creative and more importantly, the food is executed to perfection. Our service was excellent, attentive and helpful in suggesting how much to order. The concept is that the food comes out of the hearth, including the bread which is delicious. Dessert was unreal. We would definitely return."

  • "Really enjoyed dinner at Petruce et al. The drinks list is not deep but it is broad, with an interesting mix of coctails, interesting wines, dry ciders, even sherry. You can do pretty much whatever you want with small plates, medium plates, entrees and entrees for sharing. We got the 20 Oz. dry aged beef for two and were not disappointed. Many interesting choices to pick from across the board. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "As they use a wood fired grill and oven, the flavors of the food are quite different. We loved everything we ate."

  • "I enjoyed sharing 5 dishes with another person and then dessert. Everything was really good and beautifully made. The stand-out must have, is the Octopus. I've never had it like this before. Perfectly cooked and spiced just enough to have an interesting flavor that Ive not previously had with octopus. Definitely going back soon!"

  • "The food was good and the restaurant is attractive and comfortable. And usually those positive factors would suggest we'd be back. Usually, even if the other factors like service aren't stellar we would overlook it if the food was really good but in this instance our server was so condescending and unhelpful that it ruined what should have been a very nice dinner. He was so uncommunicative that we ended up asking the sommelier questions about the menu."

  • "Food was great and the wine recommended to us was excellent. Sat in back by kitchen, very cool! Would definitly go back for more."

  • "Innovative food prepared with care and ingenuity, presented with the right amount attention. Oddly, the room is as dark as a basement, my table was a single table at a 2 seat banquette-it felt like the rest of the table was amputated-a canyon between tables. Like Siberia or solitary confinement. The menu was overdetermined in presentation-the minimalism reeks of pretension and insecurity, but the food was over the top delicious. The confidence of the food was matched by a smart reasoned wine list. A 2012 Barbera D'Asti. Young Nebbiolo can be dodgy - not this one. Right price too. The website menu did not correspond to the evening's menu. Drag because I had chosen my entree and matched it to wine on the site-neither of which were available."

  • "Great service, perfect pre post theater location but priced for this crowd. $3 for homemade bread? Mixology was ok, dishes have very interesting ingrediants but execution was not consistently balanced within and across dishes. Roasted carrot was excellent, Summer squash and Quail was underwhelming."

  • "I found this gem looking for a place to eat prior to attending a play at the Forrest Theater. The menu is very eclectic and innovative. Plate sharing is encouraged, and allowed my wife and me to try 4 dishes (2 small, 1 medium and 1 large), which was ample food. The small plates consisted of the chicken liver and the sweet potato. Both were excellent. My only suggestion to the restaurant is to serve the liver (which is like a terrine of pate) with the hearty sourdough, not the brioche. The octopus was the next course to come out. It is unlike anything I have ever tasted. The octopus was so tender. The pork shoulder was the final dish, and the wood-fired cooking just rendered the meat so tender and flavorful. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Terrific food. We were thoroughly entertained by the combinations of flavors and textures. Love plates that challenge our ability to understand preparation and ingredients. This place did it. Ate at Sbraga the week before and thought that it couldn't be topped. Petruce et al is a serious challenge. We shall return."

  • "We ate here before a show at the Forrest Theater, a great location right across the street. We told our server that we had some time restrictions, they were more than accommodating . Our food came out promptly, and was delicious . The small plates were the best. The cucumber and melon was one of the most flavorful things I've tasted in a long time! The beef tartare and chicken liver, outstanding! The entrees we had were, lasagna ( over cooked and dry), summer squash ( nothing special) ,yellowfin tuna ( just okay), chicken with onion grits was very good!"

  • "Food lived up to expectations, very flavorable. Sitting in the rear, near open kitchen, made conversation difficult. Walls and floors cou;d use some covering. It was also too dim to ready the menu without help from our phone flashlight."

  • "This was our second time at the restaurant. The food and service were much improved and excellent."

  • "The buzz drew us the restaurant. We tried several of the recommended dishes--both the cucumber and melon and sweet potato first course, lasagna second course, chicken and grits third course, and peanut butter cheesecake for dessert. I understand the concept of the restaurant is to put flavors together you may not expect, but the result should be dishes that blow you away and are not lackluster. The melon and cucumber dish was okay but didn't really wow our table. Definitely wouldn't order it again. The sweet potato had great flavors but the consistency was mushy and needed a crunchy texture to add to the palette. The lasagna was a good concept but needed meat and not to be burned. Chicken was okay and cheesecake was just sad."

  • "I live in Washington Square area and have been walking by, but knew nothing about the place. The other night my friend and I were doing a quick change of plans and just booked it on Open Table from my cell phone. We LOVED everything we ate!! Appetizers of liver pate and watermelon and cucumber salad and a roast chicken dish we shared. Dinner was amazing!! Ambiance is hip, monotone but pleasant. Server was low key and competent. I highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "We decided to have dinner at Petruce Et Al due to their unique wood burning oven. Each plate was full of flavor, but not over-powered from the way it was cooked on the wood fired grill. Will definitely be back to visit again!"

  • "I didn't know what to expect from this new restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised at the menu. There is a variety of choices - small plates, medium plates and large plates which are main entrees. I had the tuna which was done very well. It was very tasty and served with romesco, hazelnut, chanterelles and onion. The presentations were also done well. My dining companion had the chicken which was very good as well. It was served with grits, broccoli rabe, pancetta and heirloom tomatoes. For starters we shared the cucumber and melon salad which came with haloumi and chickpeas and the brisket which was just delicious. It was sliced thin and served pink with small slices of toast. I would definitely return."

  • "One of the best Philly dining experiences I've had so far. My group ordered the Chicken Liver Mousse (best I've ever had and I'm not a liver fan), the Beef Tartare, Watermelon Salad, Hiramasa (to die for), the Octopus Congee, the Quail, the Lasagna, the Ahi Tuna, Black Bass, and Summer Squash. Every bite of every dish was fantastic and beautifully executed. We couldn't rave enough about this place to all our friends. Most highly recommended!!"

  • "The food was excellent, we ordered the beef tartare, summer vegetables and the chicken plates. Our server was very attentive and quick. However the manager did make a careless comment when the server was concerned with my husband choking. It was no big deal something went down wrong; if not for him it would have been 5 stars"

  • "but the wine list is small, grossly overpriced, and bizarre in its selection of low end selections. The menu is brief so we were able to sample a a good percentage of it. Each was impressive in its taste, creativity, and execution. Waitstaff is very knowledgeable. We'll definitely return for the inspired cooking -- and hope they have a corkage fee."

  • "lots of hits and misses. I don't know what all the hype is about. I thought it was way overpriced for the quantity and the quality."

  • "Suspend any negative thoughts about high prices and small plates and just allow yourself to wallow in unique bursts of flavor. The small plates are small, but the imaginative combinations of ingedients are huge. The full size entrees are easily large enough to share. Our kale salad, octopus and chicken were outstanding. The waitstaff are top of their game. GO!"

  • "After reading a great review, I was eager to try Petruce et al. The food did not disappoint. Almost everything our group of four had was excellent. In particular, it was great to have a chef doing interesting things with vegetables. However, I would never go again. The noise was literally deafening. My ears still rang the next day. We were unable to talk with our friends, so the hour long wait between the first and second courses felt like torture. It was a miserable evening, which is a pity in light of the excellent food."

  • "The best place in Philly. Hands down. Read a 3 Bells review. Made a reservation. Waited a month. Ate like there was no tomorrow. Loved. Every. Second. Of. It. I have already told some friends about this place and insisted that they go. Get the Summer Squash or octopus if it's still on the menu. They change it frequently. And look for me with the big smile on my face!"

  • "This was the second time my wife and I went to Petruce Et Al, and it was still great- perhaps even better. The menu remains very interesting, with some favorites and new things, the food is terrifically matched, highlighting flavors and textures in just the right way, and the service is very good, too. I very highly recommend visiting."

  • "We had one of the best meals of the year here--the food, drinks and ambiance were absolutely spot on. We ordered way too much food and still ate every bite because it was so delicious."

  • "The food was outstanding. Appetizers, side dishes, and entrees were equally done well. Presentation, spices, sauces all complemented the food. I will highly recommend Petruce Et Al."
