Diner Reviews
  • "Our food was not memorable... the eggplant filled with rice was pretty far from french cuisine. The halibut was OK, but had it been seared, it would have been much better. The liver pate was awful. The Locs were fine, but not special. in any way. The noise level is likely uncontrollable, but it is very noisy and more than difficult to have a quiet conversation. This is the second time I have been there, mostly because the attentiveness of the wait staff that I came back... on a fairly omportant evening for us... So, that's that... T"

  • "W really enjoy the Petit Bistro because we can count on the consistency of the high quality of food and excellent service. Those two qualities will keep us coming back to a restaurant. Zita"

  • "Meeting tennis friends for lunch was a very nice treat at Petit Robert Bistro in Needham. We all had something different for lunch and brunch. (eggs- salads) Everyone enjoyed... Might have to try other selections next time."

  • "My friends and I came here for the first time. Every dish was great, there was nothing that was "just OK". A couple of my friends rolled their eyes in perfect satisfaction. Price was very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. I believe the restaurant just won four new customers who will be bringing their friends and family here. The restaurant is small so the noise level is high. We had difficulties hearing one another at our table. Service is pleasant and the wait staff don't bother us more than absolutely necessary. The only suggestion for the wait staff is to check on water more often. I was out of water for a long time without anyone stopping by to refill and the wine was not doing the trick."

  • "This is a good place for an evening dinner. It lacked some luster that it certainly could have had with some additional effort. Clearly they wanted to push water, drinks and up selling you. Salads were very good but they could have had a more reasonable amount of cheese. The smoke salmon appetizer was not good because it had a lot of black on it. Main courses were grilled nicely; they definitely had the right temperature that they cooked with. There were a lot of nice vegetables being used, that you don't always have at other restaurants. For the price, it had to be a lot better than it was if they want people to return. I left full, which is better than I can say about a lot of restaurants."

  • "Two couples were escorted to a lovely table. We were served a three course meal + drinks in a wonderful pace.. We had time to talk & drink & enjoy each course. We were never pressured. The bill was reaasonable & we had a great time!!"

  • "Tucked away in a small group of stores is a restaurant where French food can be enjoyed. It does have some "American" food for those who are not too adventurous. Service was very attentive."

  • "Began with nice Pates de Maison that we shared. Had to ask for more bread, but tasty assortment. Sweetbreads were deemed good, my Chicken Kiev was fine, eggplant special wasn't entirely cooked through, but risotto was tasty. Wine markup was excessive on sauvignon blanc. Coffee was good, cappucino could have been hotter & expresso portion was scant. Biggest downer was that Open Table reservation specified it was my brother's birthday. Other tables received a complimentary dessert with candle, but my brother's birthday was not acknowledged. Important to read the reservation. Overall, restaurant is fine, and server, though nice, wasn't terribly polished. Given the prices, things should be classier."

  • "Hadn't been there for a month or two, it was even better than I remembered. Truly fresh oysters, an exquisite fish Provençale dish, and a very lovely (though not cheap) Graves. Service friendly, knowledgeable, attentive. Bartender excellent. Host welcoming. Very willing to attend to dietary requirements. On other days the cheese plates have been delicious but this time I went for a terrific apple tart. You may think you are on La Rive Gauche but there's no river."

  • "The excellence of the food was no surprise, having known Petit Robert from Kenmore Square and Jacky's and the original one at City Hall and before that on Marlboro? Street. The menu was so good, as was the wine. I had a date with a couple of guests there and looked forward to some good conversation. Unhappily, the noise level was such that we couldn't hear one another. I am old, but my companions were young, so we can't blame it on faulty hearing. This was Saturday night and I wonder if the crown was particularly noise? Otherwise, the staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. Oldfriend"

  • "Petit Robert is a fabulous place to go for a special occasion ... the staff is wonderful, treats you like they really APPRECIATE you. We discovered this little local restaurant a few years ago, and fell in love. Because of the pricing, it is really only for special occasions for us ... but what a treat. Food is absolutely wonderful; they have the touch and the vision, and they are proud of the quality of their food ... which they absolutely should be. Also, they offer the best chocolate mousse I've had outside of France, for sure! We always leave with a big smile!"

  • "Friendly atmosphere with a deep, frequently-changing bistro menu (tripes!). Service can be a bit slow on busy nights, but it's hard to complain much about that. My one peeve is that you may not order the bar menu in the dining-room, which seems rather, well, rich for Needham."

  • "On a recent visit to Needham (our neighborhood from the 1990s), we were surprised to find a sibling of Maison Robert tucked away in the center. It was lunch time and a Croque Madame and a Provencal rose did the trick on a cold November day. We were transported by this simple food and wine back to the south of France and forgot for a moment where we were. (We returned for dinner later in the trip and were disappointed with the rest of the menu.)"

  • "Food is always delicious, they have a great menu with some unique items and some French classics. I have been to other prb locations and this one is just as nice, plenty of space, and was a great dinner"

  • "It was the first time there and did like it. Changes, I had a great service from my waitress but because of the date they were all in a fast pace. The entrance in the place, welcome is just to a minimum cold. The food was to the greatest. Will go back."

  • "Being Valentine's Day, the Bistro was full to capacity. Yet this caused no great difficulty for the kitchen or the waiters. Delicious food was served in a timely fashion. We had a very tasty and generous prime rib, served as requested 1 rare and 1 medium rare. The ambience is decidedly French: Perrier sparkling water, Pinot Gris, lovely warm sliced French bread and of course French gateau to finish. Parking can be dicey, but well worth the struggle."

  • "The food was amazing, I had the beef borgionion and my fiancé had the duck. Both were cooked to perfection. The bread was also delicious. For dessert we had the caramel bread pudding which was out of this world! A little pricey but very worth it for a special occasion."

  • "After three blah ( or worse) experiences at Petit Robert, we refused to return for over a year. Something about wanting to stay in town when we were hosting an out of town friend made us decide to give the restaurant another chance, and we were glad we did. The bread, hot from the oven, is delicious, and two of our party loved the special Cordon Bleu. I had Coq au Vin, and would have liked to get some vegetables with it like the other diners, but that is the price one pays for ordering a meal $5 less than the written on the board one. Salads, desserts and attentive waitstaff made dinner perfect. We will return sooner than later!"

  • "Petit Robert is our "go to" spot for a consistently nice dinner and evening. Staff is friendly and competent, and food is always yummy! But I do hope the profiteroles return, at least for the warmer months!"

  • "I have dined at other location of this restaurant so I'm very familiar with the quality of the food and the great service. The Needham Petit Robert did not disappoint. We were seated right on time, wait staff was attentive, but not overly so. I was meeting an old friend so there was lots of conversation while ordering. The wait staff totally understood, and did not try to rush the process. The food arrived in a timely manner, hot, well presented, and absolutely delicious. An outstanding evening."

  • "We needed a place for lunch in Needham before an afternoon birthday party, and picked the place at random. The hostess greeted us with a 50 megawatt smile, and a Parisian (genuine) accent to die for. The interior was a typical "brasserie moderne" with typical brasserie menu-with a couple of twists. My wife had a croque monseuer, and I did the charcuterie plate and the onion soup, which is my test dish for brasseries. It is easy to make onion soup; it is difficult to make GOOD onion soup. Best onion soup I've ever had outside my own kitchen. The bread was fresh and hot, the wine list limited but well-selected and interesting. The waitress was French, and it all added up to a bon jour."

  • "My buddy and I went here because someone had recommended it. It wasn't as crowded as I thought for a Saturday night. It is daily small, long and narrow. Some of the tables make you feel as though you are on top of your neighbor, so if you are looking for cozy and romantic, this didn't feel that way. Our waiter was decent, but perhaps a bit over-eager, approaching the table several times to ask if we were ready to order. The food was good, but portion size is small and the prices a bit high for what you get. Overall, it was decent and I might give it one more chance, but not an overwhelming experience."

  • "Everything was superb. If only, the Tart Tatin that my wife ordered did not have the presentation that she expected. Delicious flavor though."

  • "Delicious food, friendly, professional and knowledgeable service make this place a winner. Our group of 4 adults and 5 children was made to feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble, not even repeated requests for extra frites! Our server Matt advised us on which wines he thought would best complement our food choices and gave us two options to try (in a blind taste test) which was a nice touch . The foie gras was pan fried to pink perfection, the steak was properly rare, i.e. beautifully browned on the outside and rich red on the inside and the accompanying vegetables were al dente, just how we like them. Compliments to the chef; we will definitely be back."

  • "Celebrated a friend's 50th birthday at Petit Robert last week. We (5 women) were seated in a nice alcove room that provided some privacy but did not feel like we were being locked away somewhere. We completely enjoyed the food, wine, dessert and ambiance. Everything was delicious -- including my favorite, the liver with carmelized onions and bacon. It is superb! The service was outstanding. We will definitely go back!"

  • "We took two friends for dinner with us. We wanted to give them the experience of a French restaurant not too far from our home. We also wanted to see how much the restaurant would have improved in the past year. We had been there just after the change of ownership. The quality has improved enormously. It was good before but lacked that "je ne sais quoi". This time they have it just right. The food was exceptional, the wine list very good although on the expensive side. It is not a cheap restaurant by all means but for that quality of food it not really expensive. The service was not high class but was very efficient, polite and discrete. Excellent experience. We recommend it!"
