A word from Pete's Cafe & Bar
Pete's Cafe & Bar is a friendly neighborhood eatery in the heart of Downtown LA's Old Bank District. We offer a casual atmosphere, very much in the tradition of a New York style bistro. Celebrating 10 years, the high-ceilinged space, with its old-fashioned black-and-white tile floor, long marble-and-mahogany bar and dramatic view of downtown, is a casual but cosmopolitan setting that suits its menu of American classics with a few interesting wrinkles. Voted "Best American" by the Downtown News, offers a menu featuring grass fed beef, locally sourced ingredients and LA's best Mac 'n Cheese. The assortment of specialty fries, especially the Bleu Cheese Fries are local favorites. Serving food nightly until last call!!Continued

  • "This restaurant is wonderful!! Our food was delicious and our cocktails were above expectations!! Our server, Tom, was funny and very helpful. My friends and I will definitely go back to this restaurant!"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Pete's Café and Bar on Saturday night. The creamy butternut squash was excellent!!! And I'm a very good cook, but really loved the added spice - I believe it was cinnamon an it worked really really well. My friend said the salmon was the absolute best she has ever had and the gentlemen with us enjoyed the short rib pot pie. My fish in a casseoulet was wonderful too! It's a little bit loud but not overbearing. Reminded us all of a real New York restaurant which we all love. Our waiter was terrific and I think Pete's is an outstanding choice for a downtown LA restaurant."

  • "The service was okay, but other than that everything was comfortable, relaxing and the food was great."

  • "Very cool place to hang out downtown without being in a huge scene. Low key and easy to talk with friends. We have 2 little kids and they enjoyed it too even though we were sitting next to the bar. IF you are trying to eat healthy, not a great place b/c too much temptation. I have never had anything like the Chipotle Fries - worth the trip."

  • "What can I say, I LOVE Pete's! From the very beginning, they have kept quality, food presentation and taste is always wonderful, and the staff continues to be of the highest quality! I had a succulent steak and my friend had the Vegetable Potpie. Always a pleasure!"

  • "I frequently attend concerts at the Orpheum Theatre, and I'm always looking for pre-show dining venues. This is the second time I've tried Pete's, and I assure you, it's the last. We were seated towards the back of the restaurant, which is fine...except that there was a very loud business event back there, with only a flimsy folding screen separating them from the rest of us. The service we received was abysmal. We waited 5-10 minutes for a server to take a drink order. My son's coke came out right away..and then I waited another 5-10 minutes for my beer to arrive. The food at Pete's is decent; nothing more. Certainly, nothing to justify enduring the crummy service."

  • "First time at Pete's and pleasantly surprised. Very nice folks and a menu with variety. A business associate recommended the grilled cheese and tomato soup. Although I usually avoid grilled food, and I was really glad Pete's delivered on the simple fare with style. Felt like I was a kid again sitting in my grandma's kitchen. Nice job Pete!"

  • "Pete's serves classic American bistro fare. I've been there many times, primarily for dinner. Salads, burgers, regular entrees, the wine list are all terrific. Recently went to their Sunday brunch though, and was less than impressed. Perhaps they don't staff it as well as the dinner shift; Our server was less than attentive & we practically had to beg her to pay attention to us. Nevertheless, that's not normally the problem at night, so I would still highly recommend this place. Perhaps skip it for brunch, though.."

  • "I had a sisterhood brunch at Pete's. Me as well as everyone else had never been there before. The food was amazing!!! I never had purple potatoes before. We stayed for 2hrs just catching up on good times. Park in one of the lots because the meters are $5/hr"

  • "I first came to Pete's right after they opened for a private tasting for my work. I've been eating there randomly over the years. They were one of the first restaurants to come into this area before it really changed for the better. The food has always been amazing. I will admit that I went there on a date Sat. and it was really loud - but that's not a bad thing. The chicken pot pie was amazing! I wanted to lick the bowl - but didn't! LOL. The bartender could have been more friendly and greeted me. Even though he was busy - I waited several minutes before being asked what I wanted to drink - which was fine - but I never felt he noticed me for the longest time. A friendly, "I'll be right with you..." would have been helpful. I'll be back."

  • "We have not been downtown for dinner in years. I was surprised at how much activity there was on the streets and in the restaurants. It was not quite NY on a Saturday, but the energy downtown has increased a lot in the past few years. Pete's Cafe & Bar captured some of that energy with a lot of large groups celebrating a variety of events. I would not recommend for an intimate dinner, but it was a great place to hang out, eat, drink & chat for several hours. We ordered appetizers and main course. The food was good, not over the top amazing but, we were very satisfied. The prices were reasonable and the setting made you feel like you were in another city altogether. I would go back even to just have some snacks & a beer at the bar."

  • "I had made a reservation for 3 people because I knew this place would be packed on a Saturday night. We were celebrating my best friends birthday and wanted to try this place for a while. Reservation was for 9:30pm arrived at 9:20pm. Hostess first of all couldn't find my reservation then when she did she said they had to "go look and see if she could find a table for us". She came back a few minutes later to say she "might have a table in about 20 min" I thought purpose of a reservation was to have a table. She asked if we wanted to wait. What?? They didn't even apologize. I said no thank you and left. Hostess looked relieved we were leaving. Won't ever go back there."

  • "Great spot downtown--excellent food, prepared with care, and some nice cocktails. Noise level reasonable (the music could be turned down a bit). OK for kids but also for hipsters. Altogether a good bet."

  • "The food was really good. Their famous burger lived up to the claim...yummy. The waiter and his helpers were really great.Friendly and outstanding service. Sunday late afternoon before dinner but chef said he would go ahead and make dinner entrees for us. We had a great day in L.A. Ending perfectly with great food and laughter at Petes. Thank you"

  • "We had a nice pre-show dinner at Pete's. Located in a really cool building (I believe it was a bank in it's previous life), it has a nice feel and cozy bar area with sports TV. Not overly loud or crowded but that could be due to us being there on a Sunday evening. The food was good, not great, but our table did not order any of the entrees so I can't speak for that. We especially enjoyed the butternut squash soup and the mac-n-cheese. Good service. I would recommend it for a casual evening out in L.A. I'll give it another try for lunch and other menu items."

  • "I understand it was Valentine's Day dinner but being seated for 15 minutes without anyone ever coming to our table to acknowledge our presence let alone deliver some water, is just unacceptable for spending $150+ on dinner for two. 20 minute wait for each round of drinks from the bar and 30 minute wait after that just for the Ahi tuna and Carpaccio appetizers. As awful as the service was, the food was excellent. Torn on returning as this was one of my favorite spots downtown."

  • "I ordered the flat iron steak with blue cheese fries and was not disappointed. The food was very good and the portion sizes were perfect. It's admittedly a heavier meal than I usually eat, but still had room to share the delicious bread pudding dessert. I also liked the ambiance of the place. It's more pub-like than diner, so it's cozy and warm. My friend needed to go to the train station to get home, so it's location was very ideal, being only a short drive to drop her off."

  • "Restaurant/bar that's a really nice atmosphere, easy and casual, with very good brunch menu. Four of us and we enjoyed it all---eggs/hanger steak, pumpkin french toast, a really solid and delicious meal. Service was great, a very nice pace from our server who was on top of it all. A very nice Sunday break with friends."

  • "What happens when a group of six poets explodes into a party of 14? Pete's staff make it happen. What a wonderful restaurant for a Saturday night repast. The Pete's staff was accommodating, patient, and funny as we got our acts together. Plates of food were gone in no time. Who doesn't like fries---garlic, bleu cheese, frites...? And, who doesn't like pot pie? Pete's does both well. We were a loud, expansive crew, but we were made to feel like we were at home after an afternoon of mourning. Good people. Good place."

  • "I used to work near Pete's. I'm now retired but a friend and I from disparate parts of the city returned for their blue cheese fries. (We also split a very good Cobb salad, just to pretend we were having something healthy.)"

  • "Truffle fries were so good! I've actually never had anything here that wasn't really good. Favorites include the burrata plate, the mac & cheese (with Vermont cheddar!) and the burger. Service is inconsistent. This last time it was just ok, but sometimes it's great. Wine list is decent and affordable. I love the atmosphere - it's cozy, warm and not too loud, even at prime time. It's great for small groups. Also, they're open late!"

  • "We came here before going to the Ahmanson. Our waiter was attentive, the food came quickly, and the quality was excellent. We've come here before before plays and have never been disappointed. The noise level from the music was a bit loud for us, but our waiter cheerfully relocated us to a quieter table."

  • "Food is good, right size portions and good variety. The restaurant was nicely quiet when we arrived but got progressively noisy as the night went on. Fortunately we were done and leaving when it got really busy. Might be a generation thing - we are 55+ and too much noise detracts from the ambience and experience."

  • "The cocktails were terrible. A Moscow mule is one of the simplest class is drinks you could put one your menu there's no reason to screw that up. As far as the food if the best thing we ate was the cheese platter that's not saying much, all they had t do was buy it and serve it. I don't want I be unfair but the crab cake lacked any texture and I think was possibly frozen."

  • "Pete's Cafe and Grill is a terrific place to grab some delicious food and a good glass of wine before heading to the theater, dance or opera at the Music Center. The services tends to be a little slow which adds to the laid-back feeling of the joint. It feels historic and familiar at the same time as you munch on a great steak frites looking out on the famous Farmers and Merchants Bank building on Main Street."

  • "My wife and I discovered Pete"s Cafe last New Year's Eve. And she asked to go again this year. Though its location on 4th and Main is sort of out of the way from the Music Center district, it is close enough and a very fun, worthwhile place to go. Pete's offers a relaxed, yet elegant, atmosphere. And the chef creates delicious and original offerings you won't see at any other downtown restaurant. Our server this year, Stanzi, did a terrific job taking care of us--making us feel welcome and cared about. Really, any of the staff with whom we came in contact were very gracious. And the special New Year's Eve three-course, prix-fixe menu had wonderful choices. We especially liked the parsnip-vanilla bean soup and the caramel creme dessert."

  • "I was looking for a place that was fairly inexpensive, but that still offered a great selection of entrees and craft cocktails and both Yelp and OpenTable reviews lead me here. My biggest complaint was the food. I ordered the whitefish and the only thing that was the correct temp was the fish, which tasted like it was fresh off the pan, however, it was like my beans had been sitting for a while. My cousin's chicken was dry and overcooked. The garlic fries were lukewarm and seemed like they had cooked them in regular oil, then recooked in garlic oil and topped with chopped garlic cause they were kind of chewy. We were all hungry and had already had quite a bit to drink, so we didn't bring it to our server's attn. I am not likely to return"

  • "Pete's is our go-to place when we attend productions at the Music Center. They have convenient hours, consistently good food, and a nice vibe to the bar-restaurant combo. Small bites or full meals and an interesting cocktail menu means there is something for everyone. We took our teenaged daughters this last time, and they loved the food and the ambiance. Don't miss the crispy oysters on a spoon or the truffle fries. The servers were friendly and attentive, not pretentious, making the girls feel welcome. We were surprised to find on-street parking a little more difficult this time, and more restaurant activity nearby. Several reasonably-priced lots were available, though. Guess the area is really taking off - good to see."

  • "We had the most delicious meal at Pete's on Saturday night. The salmon was the best salmon I've ever had. The brussels sprouts and mushrooms were perfect, as was the bread. I had the kale and winter squash salad, which was great. It was just too small. Most restaurants serve a size that was double what I received (and I even asked for extra kale). Although our server was terrific and got everything right, the service was uncomfortably slow. We've eaten at Pete's before, and I don't always remember it being this slow. All in all, I highly recommend the food. If they can enlarge the salads and serve a little more quickly, I'll be a regular customer."
