  • I miss the old place

Remember the days of fried green olives on the table and generous, tasty portions and an efficient wait staff? Good, because those days are gone. A lot of people work at the new Petaluma, but no one's working too hard. Every course was late. The extra salad dressing made it to the table long after the salad was gone. We practically had to beg for our drinks. Also for extra bread. Mostly, the food is not as good as it used to be. Yes, the place is spruced up and prettier, but I'm not there to eat the cushions or lick the fresh paint. I heard these complaints from others; I guess I had to see for myself. What a shame.

From start to finish a full out debacle! We were 5 people for 12pm Sunday brunch. The restaurant was NOT busy at all! 3 of us ordered the same dish neither of the three came as advertised. One was devoid of the Goat Cheese, one was cold, one had bacon (as ordered). One hot dish arrived first and none of the others arrived for a long while. TEN DOLLARS for a small "bread basket" with 2 crackers and 5 small assorted rolls? Never again. No one came by to ask if we wanted a coffee refill, no one asked if we wanted a refill on our bloody mary's. We had to ask 3 times to get coffee refills. And again this restaurant was not having a busy brunch. New decor can't cover up a poorly run operation. New decor can't cover a lackadaisical attitude!

I'm in love with the udon carbonara and burratta salad. Our party of six was promptly seated and were given top notch white glove serivce from the very start. The wood fire pizza selection is quite extensive and are a great item to share amonst a few people. The mixed speciality coctails were spot on and they even had a special for 50% of bottles of wine on wednesday which will be taking advatage of the next time we make a reservation at this newly renovated gem on the UES. A++ all the way, nothing negative to say about this place.

Had a great meal at Petaluma. Two of our friends from college joined us as well. The GM Berton was on point and helped guide us to a few amazing wines off their extensive menu, and the executive chef CJ even came and touched our table. Surprised that CJ has all those tattoo's and the handlebar mustache. A lot of people were by the bar where we opted to after the meal, and the cocktails were great. Food was on point, drinks were fantastic, scene and service matched.

I had the pleasure of visiting my former go to restaurant when I lived in the neighborhood. Honestly, I was afraid based on what I saw from on line reviews from some very vocal regulars who use to patronize the restaurant. I can say, Please Come and support the New culinary team and Servers. My guests and I enjoyed every bite from the Wood Oven Branzino, Carnivoro Pizza, Agnolotti Pasta, Octopus Salad, and my personal favorite the "Udon Carbonara". The wine list is extensive, and we enjoyed the 2 value buys Super Tuscan "Therra" $64/bottle and Nero d'Avola $38/bottle.

Heard Petaluma reopened so I decided to stop by and I love what they've done with the space. The bar and dining room were tastefully renovated and I think the bar area is probably the nicest in the area. They have some really interesting cocktails and wine on their wine list and the Udon Carbonara is killer!!

Well, first off, this is NOT the old Petaluma. The food is fantastic, there aren't any white table cloths, and the cocktails are outstanding. Octopus fra diavolo - amazing - spicy, crunchy, charred... So good Squid ink pasta special from last night blew my mind, best I've had in the city. The chef had a short rob special also, classic dish, prepared perfectly. Thank you for a breath of fresh air in a much needed location.

For the record, Petaluma blew my mind. I was so overwhelmed by the food and amazing service, it literally took my breathe away. I took my friday and she equally thought the same. The manager, Anthony was very friendly and kind've cute ;) The Chef actually stopped by our table and introduced himself, he was also cute :) Some notable things to try and not miss: Udon Carbonara, Nonnas Fried Pasta, Steak Pizzaiola and Carnivoro pizza. I was really impressed with the wine and even more impressed with the GM who happens to be a Somm. He went through all our questions about the list and really took the time to make sure we knew what we were trying. WE WILL BE BACK 1X A WEEK!

The music was not dinning appropriate and too loud. Between the club music and the slow, somewhat clueless service, the experience fell below expectations. I went there with my mom thinking there would be solid food with nice atmosphere, but she ended up sending her food back and we had a hard time hearing each other. The manager came over to see how dinner was, but he did not really help matters much.

When I discovered that Petaluma reopened after being closed for some time, I had to see what all the buzz was about. The venue was very gorgeous and lively on a weekday, but not too loud for my date and me. The staff was incredibly sociable and we were treated with the most sincere kindness from the moment we walked in. Our waiter, Troy, was very knowledgeable about the drinks and food. Always a major plus! He absolutely sold us on the Lobster Ravioli. It was some of the best Italian food I've ever had along with Petaluma's Pesto Cavatelli later on in the evening. AND after our meal, the chef, CJ, came out to check in on my date and I with complimentary desserts! A true wingman! Very friend establishment and I'll definitely be back soon!

Somehow he did come up with the previous evenings bread which they heated up. Not thrilled overall and I know they just reopened after being closed for renovations.

What a shame to have a beautifully refurbished restaurant overseen by a good chef ruined by the blasting of loud music. I realized that NY restaurants believe that all sound systems must break patrons' ear drums or customers won't be happy. Believe me, they're wrong. A lovely branzino accompanied by lip reading all night long! If you don't want to talk to your dinner guest, by all means go!

When we got there the music was so loud you could not hear anything, it was 9pm on a Thursday. From the beginning it was a bad experience. We had to wait 15-20 min to get water. By that time we knew what we wanted for every mean so we ordered everything at once. We got our "brick oven pizza" before we got our bottle of wine, 15 min later... When dinner came it came at the same time as the ladies sitting next to us. They ordered their food when we were sat. One of the ladies never even received her meal. My friend ordered the veal parm, it was very thick and chewy. Not good at all. At the end every table around is was complaining. As the title says the food was mediocre at best, but the service was horrendous. Will not go back again.

The restaurant has been in the neighborhood for abut 30 years, now under new ownership and a complete renovation that looks very nice and clean in Mediterranean style. We found that it was overpriced for what it is. Pasta portions are very small, we questioned whether it was half an order, your average main course price is $30 and $20 for pasta. Wine prices are high with a limited choice. We paid $17 per glass, the bottle was $67. This restaurant better adjust its prices if they want to succeed in this neighborhood otherwise they really have to turn up the volume on the food. By the way the music selection was HORRIBLE not appropriate for dining.

This used to be one of my favorite local restaurants so I was anxious to try it under the new chef and owners. Went there the other night with a friend. She ordered linguine with clams. When it arrived, she was shocked to see the pasta amounted to no more than two big forkfuls and there were 4 tiny manila clams. For $26!!!! To make matters worse, when the manager finally arrived for a chat, he was as rude as could be. He even said when we told him we liked the pasta at the old Petaluma: "Oh, I guess you like to eat slop." No apology. No complimentary anything. No concern for the customers. Too, too bad and too sad. The food was good too.

This management has created a pretentious vibe and we won't go back. We had a reservation (early). One of our party was stuck on the train. The management allowed us to sit at a table, order drinks BUT we could not order appetizers while waiting for our friend as the entire order must go in at once. That included bread. When we were allowed to order (our friend arrived) the food was okay, not great. We were not offered cheese or pepper for our pasta. The noise level became so loud and then booming disco music started. We will not return.

Petaluma was a neighborhood favorite. It has been closed for months. Finally reopened, and everyone in the neighborhood was so excited. It is, in a word, awful. The chef was "experimenting" (we were told) -- and that's why several of the dishes were, in a word, strange. The table next to ours complained - as well they should have - and the manager appeared. What a mistake. He didn't apologize. He wasn't even thoughtful. It was, like, what do you know, you're just a customer. It was a Wednesday, and the restaurant was less than half full. No surprise.

I used to work around the corner from Petaluma and this was my first time back since their renovation. They were having a birthday party in the bar area so we were seated in the back. They took my favorite dish off the menu, the orecchiette pasta with sausage and broccoli rabe, so I had the salmon which was a little overcooked. We were in a group and they did not have a round table available. The music was way too loud for our conversation to be heard from across the table. Although this experience was not perfect, I would recommend the place and go back there just for the convenience of the location.

New ownership. Menu is totally different and frankly not very inspiring. After more than 10 minutes, no one came for a drink order-not even a busboy for water-finally, I had to say no one was waiting on us. waiter then came and took our drink order, but another 15 minutes for the drinks to come. When the waiter finally got around to taking our order he explained there was a food delivery problem and that 6 or 7 of the items on the menu were not available. Our meal was OK with the pizza being quite good. Chicken OK. When it was time for the check we again could not get the waiter and to top off the evening, after he dropped the check, he never came back to collect the payment. Again, I had to get up and ask someone for service.

The restaurant is much different from its previous incarnation. Smaller menu which is okay, the old menu was really quite extensive. Looks great, nice facelift. BUT it is very expensive for a neighborhood Italian restaurant. The appetizers are in the $15 range, entrees averaged $25, wine list was outrageous. Not a lot of wines under $60. We were four people and it was $450. That is for 4 apps, 4 entrees, 2 desserts and 2 bottles of wine. The food was good. The udon carbonara especially. The portions are on the small side served on huge white plates. To say that the restaurant was established in 1985 is deceiving because it is a new chef and new owners. Our waiter was pleasant & enthusiastic. Don't think I would go back.

Salmon special was raw on the inside and the crust was burnt. If I hadn't been hungry, I'd have sent it back. They did take 7.00 off the price though. And the noise levels were not acceptable. One could not have a decent conversation. It was just eat and run. We'll never go back.

Looking forward to Petaluma since it's rebirth announced in the NYT. My very animated, nearly strident waiter, very effusive about all the food and wine. I go with his wine recommendations. With my first course, an interesting fried pasta 'pizza', the wine doesn't arrive ..finally I flag him down and ask ..and he says: But you never decided? I did, I recount the conversation - the wine finally arrives - as my starter is getting colder. Then with my salmon main course, after agreeing to his Chardonnay-Vermintino, I have to practically tackle the waiter to demand it -again. He's clearly embarrassed, no apology, no taste, stares at the floor, pours with two luke warm bites left - then no bill adjustment. Bad tip and now bad review follow.
