  • Okay food, chaotic service

The meal started off fine. Received service shortly after seating, got our drinks and placed our order. Thereafter, we never saw our server again until we were over halfway done with our main meal. The only person was the runner bringing out the food. Our requests to him for our server were apparently ignored. My friend's food came out five to ten minutes before mine. We tried to waive down our server on multiple occasions but absent our jumping up and grabbing her, she wasn't coming to our table until she was ready. I'm sure people just have bad nights, but food just wasn't good enough to give it another try.

After dining at Pesce now several times and having better and better experiences, I am finally happy to say that this place is now a neighborhood staple -- and so wonderful to finally have a more upscale Italian restaurant that consistently delivers -- kudos to the staff for listening to your diners!

My order was for the squid ink pasta with calamari. Generally pasta is expected to be prepared as "al dente" linguine. This was over cooked and not as I expected when I traveled over 50 miles to be there. In general, the food that my friend and I ordered was very overpriced. The ambiance was like an Army mess hall and twice as noisy, making communication very difficult. We were seated in a "relatively quieter" area and while there were several other tables vacant, the hostess seated people at tables immediately next to us. On a positive note, our server, Christie, was engaging, accommodating, and efficient. This was my first experience with Pesce and I was drawn there by the Italian food on the menu. I won't be returning.

The new location is great - try to get the booth by the window. The little plates are surprisingly filling and they are all really delicious. The service was a bit hurried - they needed one more helper. I particularly liked the little pizza and the scallops. Totally rich and totally delicious.

We go to Pesce about every 3 months or so and it always has a new menu. We looked at the menu when we arrived and initially were perplexed because several of the dishes were were expecting were no longer on the menu. We chose the Seafood mixed grill as the main course for two. It was outstanding. The seafood was all nicely cooked and flavorful. Once again, after dinner, we left saying what a great meal we had and that we needed to return. Thanks for a great evening!

I am always a bit apprehensive about tapas style restaurants. The plates are usually a bite or two of each item yet the cost is "full-sized". Pesce's small plates were the perfect portion, where two could appreciate the dish and move on to the next. We ordered too much and ended up stuffed, but I enjoyed every bite! We arrived 25 minutes early and were seated right away (yay!) Ambience was trendy and felt like a special night out. Servers were attentive but didn't get on my nerves by interrupting our conversation. I recommend the place to others and look forward to returning soon.

The delightful experience of such delicious food was almost spoiled by the slow service, the infernal din through which we had to shout our conversation, and the extraordinary prices for what was good, but not thrilling, food. Would recommend for mid-week; it must be quieter and may be more timely. They should think about having a daily special.

Pesce has become the Castro District's new neighborhood Gem since the demise of its "2223 Market Street" & "Jakes" predecessors. This new Market Street Pesce is within a few short blocks from my home, spacious, and the menu has changed to a more tapas-like selection which I enjoy since you can order several items at a time and sample a wider variety of their delicious food. "Two thumbs up" for the new Pesce - I come here especially when I want to entertain guests from out-of-town to eat at a SF neighborhood eatery. The new and larger space, the open bar layout, and mixed crowd guests make the restaurant a destination rather than just strictly a local convenient place in which to dine.

We loved the place, the style, the servers, and the food is always great. The noise level was very high, mostly from diners drinking too much and shreiking. It's almost as if they want others to know they are enjoying themselves, or maybe to draw attention, but it's widespread and common and makes holding a normal conversation almost impossible at times. It's not going away, I'm afraid, so restaurants who care about this should probably use more noise-baffling floors and wall coverings. Sometimes the adults are worse than the small children. We often go later in the evening when the crowd has thinned out and it's quiter.

Really liked Pesce once again - for a group of 5, we all ordered small hot plates and a few cold ones, and they were all delicious. Just the right amount of food if your group is looking to share plates and drink and socialize. Waitstaff was friendly and attentive. The pasta dishes were amazing, especially the squid ink. The portions are a bit small, so be aware you will need several plates in order to feel full.

We loved Pesce when it was on Polk Street. It's so nice to have it in our own neighborhood. The mixed grill for two was enough for the three of us, with the grilled calamari everyone's favorite. The hamachi crudo, while small, is outstanding. Our servers were fun, but they seemed a bit overworked. The lovely hostess smoothed things over as best she could when things got busy. Our only quibble was the music. EDM at a high volume doesn't really mix well with dinner at 7:45. Save that for later.

This is my 5th visit to Pesce. Once again, it was very enjoyable. We shared several cold appetizers and each was delicious. We had the arugula salad, the heirloom tomato salad, and a small crab "tower". The bar drinks were quite good as well. It was a tad noisy (and maybe the background music could have been down a notch) but Pesce comes with our enthusiastic, "go there and enjoy"!

We thoroughly enjoyed our first experience at Pesce - the space was a favorite from our many years living and then visiting SF and were pleasantly surprised to find this great restaurant in a place we had loved and enjoyed before. The "tapas" and main plate idea is great - we had some lovely small dishes and then and exquisite Bronzino. The service was great and the owner came out and explained his concept and his path to owning this place - very friendly and kind. The only negative was the availability of better liquor brands (no Grey Goose, no Chivas Regal) - that could be improved.

I visited the bar while waiting for my partner to arrive for our table reservation. Long story short - the bartender made us feel so welcome that we ended up just staying seated for dinner at one of the bar bistro tables. He was very attentive to us and the other two bar tables despite having the regular bar counter packed with patrons. I was so impressed with the service that I forgot what we each had for dinner. We have been here many times before and in general all the table servers were extremely pleasant. It is surprisingly refreshing to experience the same sincerely welcoming service at the bar.

I wish I remembered the name of the waitress we had on Saturday night at dinner--she is probably the best server I've had in SF in about 10 years. She had a trainee in tow, but that didn't slow her down one bit. She was engaged, funny, and very helpful with the menu. The food was very very good, and I tend to be pretty picky about seafood. The only slight disappointment was the corn/bacon side dish. I mean, how can you go wrong with bacon? I guess it was just a little bland compared to the amazing seafood small plates that we ordered.

The food was good, but extremely small portions, even for an upscale place. Our waiter was condescending, in attentive and rude. We had to ask for water 3 times, bread was served after our apps arrived. We said no thanks to Dessert but were brought a menu anyways. And then had to wait 10 Minutes for our waiter to come back and ask us again if we wanted any dessert. Id rather spend my money at the two other seafood places within a block. So unfortunate, we were hoping it would be better.
