Diner Reviews
  • "Ever since I've gone there Perilla became my favorite restaurant. The food is absolutely outstanding.. My favorite items on the menu are duck meatballs and risotto. Hoping to go back soon."

  • "Went with friends and had a great time. Waiter was very helpful and gave great advice about the menu. Food was excellent. I had duck and was amazing. Everyone else had an excellent meal and will go back in a "heart beat"!"

  • "I live in neighborhood and have been wanting to try Perilla for a long time . The other night was the first opportunity . It was wonderful . Warm, comfortable, non pretentious, smooth ,friendly service and amazing food. All three of us had fish of one kind or another which was beautifully prepared and full of flavor. The crispy mussel salad to start was one of my favorite all time things. We were all very impressed. Wine by the glass was very good. But the most important part for me is that this is a really classy spot with none of the attitude and precious pretense of many others. It is a real place serving real, very good food. I would recommend to anyone"

  • "This is the fifth time I've been to Perilla, and the food has remained top-notch. This time around I had the faro risotto, a favorite, and the cod. Both deliciious. My friend, a first-timer, had the pork belly, which she thoroughly enjoyed. What was notable this visit, though, was the attention of the staff. When i made the open table reservation, I noted that we were catching an 8 o'clock show in the neighborhood. Both the manager and waitress came to our table to ask how soon we wanted to order so they could facilitate it. Nice to know such notes are actually read."

  • "Cozy village spot with great food. Earthy style cooking - Bold flavors. Not delicate but creative. Attentive and responsive service . Moderate and varied wine list."

  • "The food is too chi chi, too complicated, which doesn't necessarily mean complex in a good way...It's a mishmash of flavors and influences, without any point of view. On top the noise level coming from bad acoustics and very loud music is unbearable. Forget about having any conversation...."

  • "Love this place. I had a friend visiting from out of town and wanted take her to a good meal. Loved the food and the service was amazing. The had a special dark chocolate souffle. It was out of this world."

  • "Firstly, from the door, the staff was attentive and tried their best to give everyone their attention and ensured the wait would be short. The Mussels Salad my favorite of the night. Also, enjoyed the spicy meatballs. Overall, an amazing dining experience."

  • "The only dish worthwhile here is the duck meatballs. We sent back the pork shoulder. The cod was very ordinary. Critics rave about this chef, but this restaurant is very ordinary."

  • "Perilla is an adorable restaurant. It is located in a quiet street, glad we choose this restaurant for restaurant wk. Our server is really nice, the food was delicious & a nice offering for restaurant wk. I had the fish special, another friend had the chicken, & another friend had the gumbo, we were all happy with our meals. As the restaurant got busier, it started getting moderately noisier, but not unbearable."

  • "Heard good things about Perilla and it didn't disappoint. Good selection on the Restaurant Week menu. The gumbo was excellent, Korean tofu was yummy (but could've been served at a higher temperature), and the apple cobbler comforting. The bartender and all the servers were friendly, but front of house (the girl) seemed tentative and uneasy for some reason."

  • "delicious food but not mind-blowing. waitress was very nice but the hostess was a bit surly."

  • "We rarely go down to the Village, but this was worth the trip. It was Restaurant Week in NYC, and the three of us all opted to go with the special menu. Every item would be described as very good to excellent, and the souffle ($6 extra) was terrific. Very unusual wine list, but very fairly priced."

  • "Service was good and everything was very tasty. Had the corned beef hash and eggs - delicious, but I wanted more than the teaspoon of meat served. Otherwise happy to recommend this place."

  • "Only blemish was wet and undercooked rice but rest of the restaurant week menu was excellent."

  • "Everything was really great except for my dessert. I saw someone with creme brulee donuts though so I think I just chose poorly."

  • "Very much enjoyed the dining experience at Perilla. Even though it was very crowded, the attentive staff took care of me as a single diner which was much appreciated. The menu was very creative and offered a nice choice of items including vegetarian items. Nice wine and beer selection - was happy to see such a good set of options. And the food was very very good. The restaurant is definitely small and therefore is a loud atmosphere, but overall the experience was very excellent. Highly recommended."

  • "We came here to take advantage of Restaurant Week and while overall the food was good, I think Perilla really could have shined a lot more. My biggest gripe was that instead of using the RW menu to showcase some of its "signature" items (i.e. Spicy Duck meatballs, Kale Salad, Pork Belly, etc..), they instead chose to keep a more limited menu that I think might not do the restaurant justice. I understand that RW might not exactly be a huge profit-maker, but the purpose of it should be the bigger picture / long run where you allow patrons to sample your highlights and hope they will become repeat customers. If Perilla's food were just to be rated on the RW offerings, it doesn't make me go "Wow! I'm definitely coming back here again!"."

  • "We had the seven course tasting menu and there was too much going on. Each dish was too fussy with too many ingredients that clashes."

  • "The restaurant was really good. I got the name of it after going after the chef, who I discovered after winning the first series of the Top Chef competition. The duck was really good and so was the green salad with apples. I will definitely return to explore more of the menu and hopefully with some friends."

  • "Perilla is one of our favorites and we go there often. As always the food was terrific and the service very good. One of our diners had special dietary needs and requested a small change to a side dish. The restaurant did not accomodate this and we were quite surprised and disappointed about that."

  • "This spot seems to be tailored for dates or catching up over wine and dinner with a close friend with very intimate spacing (you sit very close to the parties adjacent), small tables, and acoustics that almost force you to lean into each other over the table. Definitely shouldn't try going here for a 4-top. The table space is limited, and I ended up having to fight for elbow space with an eagle-style diner next to me as it was. The barkeep makes a decent old-fashioned, though it came back more as a Manhattan down than whiskey muddled with bitters, orange and cherry. Limited whiskey/liquor selection, but they have a novel of a wine list."

  • "Everything about our brunch at Perilla was a delight. The service was attentive and cordial: not too stiff and formal, not too over-friendly. The food original and inventive, but tasty and unpretentious. The atmosphere: comfortable seating with adequate space. And, finally, a restaurants for adults where you can have a conversation and actually hear each other. What a novelty! Highlights included the Lemon Ricotta pancakes: subtle and not too sweet. The Vanilla Scented Donuts: Crisp, not too greasy, and not too sweet. The apple compote that came with them was understated and a perfect compliment. Reasonable proportions at a reasonable price. I would definitely come back."

  • "Cute little place in the west village off the main streets. Went for brunch and it was delicious. Service was great. Trending little place. definitely a local Gem"

  • "Not too loud (we went around noon) and the atmosphere was cozy. Food was reasonably priced and service very attentive. I thought I would have a problem with reservations but had no problem whatsoever."

  • "Was here for restaurant week. Amazing food all around. I had the Moroccan chicken and my friend had the Hake. The hake was okay, but the moroccan chicken was amazing! It came with delicious couscous with nuts, on top of a bed of collard greens. The hake was good, and on top of fingerling potatoes and brisket, but personally I'm not a big fan or hake. Appetizers we had were the mussel salad and asiago salad. Mussels were fried, so that was a bit of a let down but the flavors of both appetizers were extremely well done and vibrant. Desserts were amazing. Get the orange financier, you won't regret it!"

  • "I enjoyed the food and quiet conversation with friends. It's a good place to have a nice meal and a conversation. There wasn't too much to distract you from the main focuses -- the food and the company. I will definitely return!"

  • "Get the duck meatballs. Don't get the steak. Fish is good but just not worth the price. I didn't feel the food overall was worth the price. It was good of course, but not amazing. Go somewhere else :)"

  • "The food is thoughtful, refined and delicious. It's fine dining, and the prices reflect that, but I have had much more expensive meals that didn't come close to the quality of Perilla. It's truly a gem."

  • "The fried calamari and watercrest salad is a must - I have it every time. It's lemony, and it's fried salad - who doesn't want that?? The lamb agnolotti appetizer was also wonderful! Guests had the pork belly special, hanger steak and the fish special. We all loved our meals. Service was top notch, our waiter was a doll. Drinks were good. Food is on the pricey side, so its a great place for a date or special occasion."
