Perilla is a critically acclaimed neighborhood restaurant opened by Chef Harold Dieterle and Alicia Nosenzo. Located on Jones Street, a quiet block off of West 4th in Greenwich Village, it features a welcoming atmosphere and exceptional food. The menu is seasonal and changes regularly, but a number of customer favorites remain year-round. Complementing the food is an eclectic mix of wines and spirits, focusing on many smaller producers from the U.S. and around the world, meant to be approachable for all palates and price points.   • "Lovely little neighborhood place. Nice folks. Good atmosphere. Food: Good. But for the price, more than $400 for four of us, you could do better. We all had fish. The fish was cooked well, i.e., not overcooked. Still moist but done. Sauces and vegetables to go with were uninspired and lacking in flavor. Great desserts, however (Fried Rice Pudding and Jam Doughnuts). And farro risotto was great."

  • "I'll be honest, the main reason for choosing the restaurant initially was its being close by the IFC. And the location is great, in the most villagey part of the village, with uncluttered but warm decor, it feels like the neighbourhood place you've always deserved. The staff are some of the best I've ever met. My friend has a few limits on her diet and the kitchen really showed their colours in adapting the menu to these. Front of house were equally awesome, according to my friend. I'm European, and for me that whole friendly helpful thing feels a bit alien. But if the worst you can say about a restaurant is that the staff are more helpful than you're used to, well that's pretty good."

  • "A long, fairly narrow room with full bar on the right as you enter and several tables leading to more tables makes for a comfortable, bright place to eat-at the bar or tables. We were promptly seated and waited on and service was attentive but not overbearing. Loved the oysters, duck meatballs in a tasty spicy broth and mains of roasted duck breast and tuna. A few good surprises on the wine by the glass list and perfect cocktails. Glad to have found Perilla and will be back."

  • "I dined here alone, so there were many choices on the menu that I will have to save for another visit. But this is a great neighborhood restaurant--and one worth a taxi or subway ride from further afield. Other than having to spend most of my dinner listening to an unpleasant marital spat at the table eighteen inches from mine, this was an excellent meal. Fish cooked perfectly. I topped it all of with an outstanding Meyer lemon marscapone cheesecake. I will be back."

  • "We ordered the spicy duck balls to start. They were amazing. They set high expectations for the main course. I had the chicken which was amazing. So was the side of asparagus. My husband ordered the pork chop and was very disappointed. It was very fatty. We might try the restaurant again next time we are in the city, but we will change our order."

  • "Make certain you know where Jones Street is located. It's really not hard to find if you don't mind asking and receiving lots of misdirections. It's worth it. We EVEN received a phone call from the restaurant when we were 15 minutes behind schedule and, although we were nearby, we were still given directions just to make sure. Food/Service/Wine List/Martinis!!!! And excellent advice from the wait staff when it came to ordering bottles of both red and white. Martinis were delectable: cold and smooth. Couldn't have asked for more; the theater we were attending was around the corner! Dlorah"

We enjoyed the catfish and duck meatballs for appetizers - the latter were truly excellent. Two of us had the pork chop, which was juicy but not underdone, and one had the cod - also much enjoyed. The risotto side dish was a great addition to the meal as well. I had a stout from Evil Twin Brewing Co - a great brew that I really need to drink more of. We're definitely coming back."

  • "I tried out Perilla for brunch and was very impressed by the lamb meatballs with cous cous and labneh. It was perfectly paired with a delicious tempranillo wine. Great flavors, pleasant wait staff, and an appealing decor encouraged me to come back for dinner. It was another great meal. For appetizers, the cucumber salad was wonderful, as were the duck meatballs. I went with the duck entree...wonderful in a light brown sugar glaze, and my boyfriend had a hearty perfectly cooked smokey pork chop. I will be back :-)"

It was our second experience at the restaurant and it could not have been more wonderful. From the cocktails and wine to the extraordinary menu items, everything was fabulous. And everyone in Perilla is friendly and accommodating, doing it all for the pleasure of their guests. There are many, many good restaurants in New York but Perilla is a rare gem which no one should miss!"

  • "A group of my girlfriends, all foodies and healthy eaters, and I went here on a Friday night and REALLY enjoyed ourselves. Its on a quiet street, kind of like a hidden gem on a residential block. The booths are ideal for groups and the ambiance was great. Delicious and original flavors in both their drink and food menus. Would love to come back again. Only complaint- it was a little muggy in the restaurant. I was sweating a bit through dinner! They definitely needed some fans or higher AC!!"

  • "Excellent. Great food all around. Mussel salad starter was creative and well-prepared. Chicken and duck entrees had excellent, distinct flavors that wore well over the course of the meal. Basil ice cream and raspberry doughnuts were fun way to end the evening. Suggested wine pairing was outstanding. Service was excellent was beginning to end, including the seamless transition between waitresses as one's shift ended. The neighborhood has so many restaurants that we rarely make return visits. But I guarantee we will be back to Perilla."

Only criticism, upon arrival, the hostess commented that the restaurant tried to call to confirm however I never received a phone call possibly because I'm from outside the country visiting NYC. She made it seem as though I had lost the reservation and was doing us a favor by finding us a table which we appreciated. I figured making a reservation on Open Table sufficed as confirmation. "

A few were overwrought (e.g. duck breast with an odd and extraneous "savory baklava", among half a dozen or so other components.) The desserts were both outstanding - basil ice cream + amaretti cookies + balsamic was genius, and the doughnuts were well above-average. The restaurant needs to apply the same meticulousness to its savory dishes to earn a higher score, at least from me. The wines are limited but well-selected and include a few with very solid value."

My friend got the lemon ricotta pancakes and I had the spicy duck burger. We loved the pancakes but agreed the burger was even better. Just the right amount if spices, and really moist. "

  • "The hamachi starter was outstanding: very fresh, tasty, a little crunch. My duck breast was perfectly cooked. My wife's swordfish was a little overcooked, and they acted immediately, giving her another delicious starter (crispy mussel salad) and producing a fresh filet perfectly cooked. A 2010 Santenay, recommended by the server, worked well with the meal. The dessert, lemon semolina cake and rose petal ice cream, was a delicate, sweet touch to end a wonderful meal. The place has a nice, warm, relaxed neighbourhood vibe and is presided over by an engaging hostess who has her finger on the pulse of the place."
