Diner Reviews
  • "The place was one I had wanted to try for some time so I went in with high expectations but in the end we found the food to be good but not exceptional."

  • "We went to Perilla for Restaurant Week. I had the chilled cucumber soup, amberjack, and almond financier. My husband had the salad, chicken, and ice cream. The flavors were wonderful. The serving size was perfect. The staff picked out an excellent Spanish wine for us. Just a lovely experience!!"

  • "Great good, friendly service, nice ambience. I've been to Harold Dieterle's other restaurants and Perilla and Kin Shop are my favorite."

  • "This is a small place with unassuming, clean decor and great ambience. From the start, I appreciated the control of seating and reservation times. My friend and I had conversation with inside voices and actually heard each other, listened to the rockin' playlist (Bowie, Led Zeppelin, The Who) and, most importantly, thoroughly enjoyed the food. The lobster mushroom and ricotta ravioli was delightful. My friend had the pork chop with fig compote and loved it. We were so full, but could not resist dessert - a savory, yet refreshing basil ice cream sundae. Throughout the meal, all the servers and runners were exceptional - friendly, knowledgable, and very observant. We left extremely happy and look forward to the next time."

  • "Food good, service outstanding but AC too low so too cold for comfort."

  • "This remains one of my favorites. The food is always rewarding conceptually, and the care in preparation is consistent. Get a table in front for the best atmosphere."

  • "The food at Perilla is incomparable, with fresh, interesting flavors and beautiful presentation. It's great for a date, a business meeting, a reunion with friends or just a good meal."

  • "I have wanted to go to Perilla since Harold opened it after winning Top Chef & we finally went for my friend's birthday during restaurant week. It was wonderful- lovely ambience, friendly & attentive service & delicious food. Highlights were the spicy duck meatballs & the Moscato dessert wine- both were standouts in a flavorful & inventive meal. It was also nice to be so close to IFC where we went for a movie afterwards. Highly recommended!"

  • "Thank you, Perilla, for a beautiful night. I picked you off of a list, and could not have been happier with everything. The meal, service and ambiance were all top-notch. We will definitely be back."

  • "what does one say when the noise level is so high that it can nearly ruin the most fabulous of meals? Certainly not "quiet," "moderate," or "energetic." The food and service at Perilla were extraordinary... the farro risotto practically brought my husand to tears! But, we will have to try another night (not during restaurant week) to see if the noise level is less painful... if not, it will be a sad last dinner there."

  • "Great tuna! Great mussels. It was Restaurant Week and even at 9pm, all the tables were full!"

  • "The food and service were awesome. The only downfall was the acoustics; it was a bit loud."

  • "Bursting flavors on every bite ! Went dining there during restaurant week, and it was just very very good. A must try . Party of 3 , we all had great food, no one had a complain ."

  • "Our restaurant week early dinner for two was flawless. Gracious service, interesting choices, delicious food. We never felt rushed and were able to talk freely and hear each other, too."

  • "They are beyond service oriented and the food is beyond delicious. I would go for any awesome occasion."

  • "Went with the boyfriend for Restaurant Week. The atmosphere is casual (t-shirt and jeans ok) and welcoming for a small restaurant. We ordered the side popcorn as well as the chocolate souffle (which was extra), and they were delightful. The food was amazing, great presentation and amazing flavors. The drinks we had were just as good, and this is a place where you can stop by for a drink after work if you didn't want to just sit down and have a meal. Can't say enough good things about this restaurant, and we want to return to try other items off the menu (like their duck meatballs)"

  • "we went to perilla's for restaurant week. the food is adventurous, and many of the dishes utilize bold flavors. that being said, i wasn't a huge fan of all the flavors i tasted. sometimes, i believe less is more, and i felt like this was the case here. the winners this evening for us were: the bread (i hate to fill up on bread, but this was that perfect chewy crust and soft center), the mussels, the cucumber soup, and the almond financier. my husband had the chicken and i had the fish, but again, the bold flavors of the sauces, aioli, heat etc. often overpowered the dish. so, if you want a culinary sky diving experience, come here. if you're more into more classic tastes, there might be better fits."

  • "The food on the Restaurant Week limited menu was terrific. The only slip-up in service is that the cucumber soup (wonderfully spicy but with pieces of watermelon to cool down the taste buds) was served without spoons. They were quickly brought when we asked. Great flavors throughout the meal."

  • "Wanted to try Perilla for quite some time and had usually thought of it as a destination for a special occasion. So during Restaurant week it popped up on my radar and we tried it for date evening after a long week of travel and two toddlers. I loved the service from the front end to the table side. Wait staff were attententive without being intrusive. Ambiance is warm and friendly. The problem was the food. The menu is not a stretch for most NYC restaurant kitchens and had a great choice of selections. We chose the restaurant week menu over the a la carte and maybe that was the problem. The good part was that the portions were generous the bad was that the flavors seemed lacklustre and uninspired. Maybe an off night? Will give another try."

  • "Came here for RW 14 dinner but ended up ordering from the regular menu. Duck Meatballs did live up to expectations and are to die for! Perfect hint of spice after a few bites in. Also got the roasted duck breast and pork chop as entrees. Loved the flavor combo of both; however, the wine braised radicchio overpowered the duck breast and pork chop wasn't cooked enough (which left unedible fat). To end, we got the chocolate souffle which was every bit worth ordering and the wait. Service was Outstanding! They were able to accomodate to our rush and graciously remade the gargenelli when we had mentioned it was a bit too salty. They did a great job introducing different flavor combos into familiar american dishes."

  • "I tried food off of the restaurant menu and sat at the bar. Bar tender was very attentive and made good drink recommendations. I had the mussels and Tuna and found both dishes to be very bland"

  • "The food is spectacular. We tried their "Meatless Mondays" for the first time Monday night. My husband is a vegetarian, and he loved each of his four courses. I ate from the Restaurant Week menu, but had the vegetarian risotto for my main course, and was delighted with my entire meal."

  • "Friends and I were extremely disappointed. We ordered the salad and Mahi Mahi entree. The salad came and I was shocked at the poor presentation and quality of the salad. It was a few pieces of cabbage leaves and romaine lettuce. Awful. The Mahi Mahi was overcooked and thus had a plastic-like texture to it. On top of this selection, the desert was very disappointing. I ordered the financier and it tasted like a three-day old doughnut. We were all so excited for the food but was so disheartened at the end of the meal .Would definitely not recommend this to anyone. Awful tasting entrees and poor quality desert. Should be banned from the NYC restaurant week list!"

  • "My friend and I managed to nab the last reservation available for sunday night at 5 for restaurant week. For appetizer I had steamed mussels which was good and my friend raved about her chilled cucumber soup. She also ordered a side of duck fat popcorn which was alright. We both got the roasted all natural chicken as our main entree where the chicken was extremely tender which was awesome. We both loved our dessert, the almond financier and lime panna cotta. We did not expect to get a sweet treat along with our bill - the chocolate brownie cookie with caramel and sea salt filling. We absolutely loved it that we asked for seconds. Our waitress was very nice throughout the meal and treated us the second brownie. We definitely would come back."

  • "Went to Perilla for Restaurant Week and given the favorable reviews, had certain expectations which were ultimately dashed. Service was pleasant and friendly, but the food, for the most part, was terribly disappointing. My mussels appetizer was the best dish of the evening—well seasoned and tasty. My wife's cucumber soup appetizer was too salty and was more like pickle soup. Our two mains, roasted chicken and tuna, were composed of redundant flavors (curry, no less) and her tuna was a medium well even though medium rare was requested. Moreover, the tuna wasn't seared, but grilled, which brought out a strange, frankly unpleasant taste in the fish. Our desserts were clearly not fresh and came out room temp. Not recommended."

  • "Came here for dinner last Thursday night. Did restaurant week's prix fixe. Ordered the mussels, albacore tuna, and the almond financier. The bread crumbs on the mussels were too salty. Both the albacore tuna and almond financier were mediocre. I chose this restaurant based on the high reviews but the food was, unfortunately, very underwhelming. Service was also mediocre. I won't be coming back again as there are plenty of other restaurants with better food and service."

  • "I came here for restaurant week last night and had an 8:15 reservation for 5. While the hostess was extremely nice, we were not seated until close to 8:50. She assured us that we would be treated well after the wait. After we sat down, someone came down and instead of apologizing, simply asked for our water order and told us about a addition to the rest. week menu (for a $6 upcharge). We then waited another 15 mins. to make a drink order and had to find the hostess to tell her no one had helped us. The server was pleasant after this, and gave us sides and a dessert on the house. The food was OK. I work closely w the industry and know the promo is used to acquire new customers; the experience at Perilla did not make us want to return."

  • "I loved the 1st course and the dessert. I asked for tuna very, very rare. After waiting too long after the appetizer, the tuna was not that rare. It also was not that tasty. No one apologized for the delay. I think the kitchen was overwhelmed. The restaurant was extremely noisy so don't go if you want a quiet place to chat. I'd be willing to try it again not on Restaurant week."

  • "We were so lucky to get a table during restaurant week. We started with cucumber soup, which was a great mix of spicy and refreshing. Everything that followed was also delicious. And then the chocolate salted caramels after dinner were the perfect finale. The restaurant is loud and crowded."

  • "Went here for restaurant week and found the food to be delicious. Ordered the mussels to start, the chicken for the main, and the sorbet for the dessert. Everything was very well done and the chicken wasn't overcooked. The sorbet flavors were nice and refreshing as well."

  • "Small restaurant, a little noisy but fantastic food. Nice mix of upscale without being stuffy. Definitely try the spicy duck meat balls and the chocolate souffle. The steak, duck breast and pork chops were all cooked to perfection. You know a place is good when you say medium rare and they nail it. Portions are big enough to feel like you are getting your money's worth. Definitely recommend this place. Also has a vegetarian tasting menu, unusual to find."

  • "OMG! OMG! OMG! I'm a Top Chef junkie, so when I booked my trip to NYC I immediately made a reservation at Chef Harold's first restaurant. Everything lived up to the expectations in my heart. I tried the spicy duck meatballs, the salmon with quinoa, roasted corn, and summer squash, and the dark chocolate souffle. I LOVED EVERY BITE! Everything was cooked to perfection. I also tried The Perilla 75 which was light and bubbly, totally a fun drink! The dinner ended with a complementary caramel chocolate truffle, which was very nice. The staff was very helpful, the hostess even charged my phone for me! It's a small restaurant, but it was nice and intimate. Some of the neighboring tables were close enough for me to be part of their conversations."

  • "Having read many good reviews , I expected a much better dining experience. Though the place looks nice and has a good vibe, the food is just average and on the pricier side. Doubt I'll be back."

  • "i had the chick pea/kale salad from the tasting menu. It was so spicy! it was ridiculous. It must have just been all chili. i had a mouthfull and it ruined the meal. I have been there before and it was good but they have to watch the spice. It is not an Indian restaurant!"

  • "I had to be in the neighborhood (at the Barrow St. Theater), and looked for a place nearby on Urban Spoon. Perilla was highly rated and had a good looking menu, so I booked a table via Open Table. What a treat! We live in CT, but my husband works not far away in SoHo, and I must say I was surprised to find the food tasting SO fresh and delicious. I have a large vegetable garden and was pleased that the vegetables in the cucumber radish salad tasted as though they had just come from a garden. The salmon special I had was perfect. Seared wild salmon with a crispy skin served over fresh fresh vegetables. My mother loved her cod with rhubarb. Interesting combinations, incredibly fresh ingredients and expert preparation--a winning combination!"

  • "This is not just going out to dinner. It's a dining experience. The food is always amazing, the menu is consistently creative, and the staff is always on their game. It always feels a little decadent without being over the top. The tasting course is a wonderful way to get a sampling of everything. We've done them with and without wine pairings and they've always been great. They've even done very interesting beer pairings. If you want consistently great food in a nice relaxed atmosphere, Perilla is a must."

  • "I loved loved loved the farro risotto, which is remarkable because I happened also to find a pebble in it. Apparently, farro needs to be carefully sifted through, and the restaurant didn't quite do it. They comped the farro, which was a good enough fix given that I fortunately hadn't hurt a tooth or anything. The albacore tuna entree was great, although a bit spicier than I had hoped. Fried rice pudding was utterly delicious too."
