Diner Reviews
  • "I have been there for brunch and it was delicious. Dinner didn't impress me as much."

  • "Too loud Unrelaxed, slow service for drinks and bad advice about the beers on offer, then dood came with ingredient I said was allergic to....the chef came out and was so nice, and gave us agree dish...but the damage was done. Not a neighborhood place, not really glam, despite the roof scene, and not really foods...not going back for dinner but might try breakfast. Very diisointing and expensive for what we got."

  • "We enjoyed dinner before driving on to see a play at Navy Pier (15 min away). Great carrot soup, good lamb sausage, good gnochi but enjoyment of scallops diminished by bitter lettuce. Good gingerbread ice cream sundae. Would have been a better experience had it been warm enough to eat outside. Inside was a bit dark and sterile though fairly busy, early on a Thursday night."

  • "Perennial Virant remains a great restaurant. Creative approaches to cuisine. Wonderful presentation."

  • "The menu selection is surprisingly different and delicious. A great casual place for brunch. Our server was lovely, and the hostess was pleasant even though we had to wait to be seated (we were early)."

  • "Had dinner on a Friday with three out-of-towners who were attending an international workshop about protecting nature in cities. I wanted a restaurant that was comfortable yet elegant, practiced sustainability, offered a variety of choices, took food allergies into consideration and where we could have a conversation. Perennial Virant was perfect. Everyone left happy."

  • "I am blown away by the great flavor combinations! The service is amazing, the portion size is perfect and the restaurant is great for any event! I strongly recommend you try it!"

  • "Although located in a hotel, this was not your typical hotel restaurant. And with the competition that you have in Chicago, this was a real find. Great ingredients and inspired preparations."

  • "Hit this location specifically for chef week. Two choices like many of the locations with a fish and meat option. Earlier in the week hit North Pond and the meat selection won out. Perennial was excellent for chef week. I did the lamb dish which was tasty but I had food envy the minute they delivered my friends dish which was the scallops. Although my dish was very good I would recommend the scallops. Some of the largest I have seen in a while dinning out in Chicago. I was truly surprised at the size considering it was a chef week menu. All courses were excellent as expected. This restaurant is always very good so its a choice for these dinning programs such restaurant week or chef week. Much appreciated selection."

  • "Every dish we tried was delicious, unique and wonderfully creative from, lamb to pickled perch to rabbit to pork. Wonderful wine list, the bread is amazing and service was fantastic....definitely one of the best restaurants in Chicago right now!"

  • "On our most recent visit, Perennial Verant was quite satisfying. The quality of the food was a little more uneven than on previous visits (salad overdressed, one of our three entrees was rather bland), but the good dishes were really excellent. The service is thoughtful and helpful, and the surroundings lively."

  • "Perennial Virant has an incredibly cozy, inviting atmosphere. It's a quaint, warm restaurant with a beautiful view to Lincoln Park. Even as a local, I found myself reveling at the view. The food speaks for itself. Every menu item was appealing and made for a difficult choice. Each item we ordered was perfectly seasoned and very flavorful. The best way to describe the food is warm and cozy! Service was great as well. Knowledgeable and friendly, checking in as needed. I will definitely be back."

  • "Excellent food. We had the prix fixe menu for chef's week, and the selections were perfect. We asked to meet the chef, and he came and talked to us, as he did with several other tables. His other restaurant is close to us in the suburbs, and we will be going there also."

  • "Not a lot to say aside from confirming that this place offers quality. Very very tasty food, especially the deer sausage."

  • "I made a reso. I arrived. Waited. Then they try to seat me at a table next to a bussing station and kitchen doors. I ask can we get another table...she says you would have to wait longer. I say, we'll wait. She rolls her eyes. I say, what about that table that's empty by the window. She says, oh that's reserved. I say, well I have a reservation too. She replies, that's for a special guest who comes often. I say, I guess I'll never reach that status because I'm probably not coming back due to how rude you are to me. She says, whatever and walks away."

  • "I booked this for a birthday dinner for a friend based on good reviews. It was good, but not great. Waitress was wonderful and friendly and helpful. Decent, reasonably priced wine list. Food was just not particularly memorable. Plastic laminate table tops with warn edges did not impress."

  • "We had been there before and thought it was worth another try. This time, not so good. Our waiter was excellent but her couldn't save the food. The menu was a strange combination of winter and spring dishes labeled as such. Most of the dishes had little taste. There were four in our party and two of the entrees came cold. Were returned and we almost finished our food before they were brought back with not much more heat than when they were returned."

  • "Perennial Virant's dedication to being a farm-to-table restaurant really shone through in every aspect of the meal. Everything we ate was incredible and we enjoyed every bite. The restaurant had a great romantic candlelit atmosphere and was the perfect place to have a special dinner with my boyfriend."

  • "Perennial Virant .. after hearing this was Rachel Ray's favorite place in Chicago we had to try it. On our visit to see our daughter who lives in Chicago we always try new places, and PV did not disappoint! The atmosphere was perfect, sunny and roomy for our Sunday Brunch. Service was outstanding, the food was incredible ... perfect portion size, the taste was so fresh. My daughter & I enjoyed the biscuits & gravy and it was the best we've ever had. We also enjoy the blueberry donut & pecan roll as well as mimosas. We look forward to going back in May!! Bravo PV well done ... keep it up!"

  • "I brought a very special out of town guest to Perennial Virant on the Saturday after Valentine's Day. I have been several times prior, but this time I thought the experience was even more impressive. I absolutely love Chef Paul's focus on local sustainable food, with a heavy emphasis on preserves. His book Preservation Kitchen inspired me to pickle loads of farmer's market produce this summer. The way the food incorporates both preserved and fresh creates a remarkable balance. My date and I ended up splitting a series of appetizer plates so that we could try a large variety of dishes. We ordered a California red/blend upon recommendation of the server which was very versatile to accommodate the different flavors. Highly recommend PV!"

  • "Had a great time at The Perennial Virant. I took my girlfriend here for valentines day and she absolutely loved it. They had a great 4-course fixed menu with a great wine pairing for only an additional 25 bucks. They also did a great job accommodating the one little food allergy we had. My one suggestion is arriving early for your reservation and checking out the rooftop bar on top of The Hotel Lincoln. Great view and strong drinks :)"

  • "Winter can be a tough time to locally source product in Chicago but PV did a fantastic job of this. Lots of pickling and delicious product! We were here for restaurant week and were very impressed, we would absolutely come back! Great meal, from beginning to end!"

  • "I took my wife here for her birthday, and once seated our server wished her a happy birthday and offered us two glasses of complementary bubbly. They also provided a little desert for her at the end, which was a nice touch. My wife ordered a la carte and had the pork chop. It was a huge portion, but she seemed to enjoy it. I had the restaurant week prix fixe menu - crunchy rice cake (yummy), trout (awesome), and the Hawaiian tiramisu (awesome). The tiramisu was probably a great riff off a classic dish. My trout was also very, very good, cooked perfectly with great flavor and crispy skin. Skip the squash gratin, in my opinion. The libations menu was outstanding and the wine selection nicely assembled. Service overall was great."

  • "The wine was good, love the farm to table idea but not for this price. Portion size was perfect and the trout was good but go to the bite cafe in Ukranian village for better food for less. Sidecar was mainly lemon juice and under poured, the salad was one if the best that I have had. Good ambiance for drinks with friends while waiting for the j Parker."

  • "We enjoyed Perennial Virant on our first visit, an early weeknight. The staff members were all congenial and helpful, the setting is warm (if not cozy), and the food was enjoyable. The chef is known for his interest in pickling and fermentation, and this was evident throughout the menu. The tang was skillfully incorporated into all our dishes. The prices are appropriate to the food & service, though it’s not a cheap date place by any means. Portions were ample (save the dessert, which was small for $10). The global wine list is well-chosen, though slightly pricey, generally proceeding up from the mid-$40s. There are many intriguing choices on the menu, especially among the small plates -- I’ll look forward to coming back to explore further."

  • "This was my 5th experience at PV. I typically LOVE LOVE LOVE it and can't say enough good things. I went here for restaurant week and thought the second course, trout, was just ok. Also the key lime pie, the crust was spongey which wasn't what I expected. I think beyond the food though, I was really disappointed in our server. I get that it's restaurant week but we all got the 3 courses and multiple glasses of wine. There was a table next to us NOT ordering from the restaurant week menu and she was at their table every 5-10 minutes. She wouldn't come near our table. The bus boys brought out our food and she only came over because and I quote "I can see you're all looking at me". I was sad because I had hyped up PV so much."

  • "We had a candidate coming, and choose the restaurant both for it's great reputation and location within the hotel. They were great about putting us in a quieter section given our purpose, and the service was both attentive and knowledgeable throughout the meal. Most of my colleagues chose from the restaurant week menu, and seemed to really enjoy their selections. I went with the pork beignets as an appetizer, and would have licked the plate had I been with friends. The scallops were well prepared, with some nice citrus notes, and some good texture from the accompanying grain (barley maybe?). Overall, I've already recommended the restaurant to several people, and will certainly put it on my list for an upcoming date night."

  • "What a nice experience! The food was great. The salad was fresh, favorable and lightly dressed - perfect. The trout was tremendous - fresh, nicely seasoned and sauced. dessert was just right- enough to end a perfect night, but not too much. Wine list has something for everyone. I had a very nice sauvignon blanc and my husband a reisling tot start. we then split a bottle of pinot noir from county line that we had red about in one of the wine blogs we follow. it was very nice. we will definitely come back. A good experience with service as well, not hovering, but attentive."

  • "Between my husband and me we tried the entire restaurant week menu and everything was fantastic. The only nit would be that the featured wine was only so so, but that is so minor considering that wonderful meals and overall experience we had. Highly recommend."

  • "Service was fine, food was creative, however a couple of the dishes were overly salty. Overall I did not feel that the quality was in line with the pricing"

  • "I've lived near Perennial Virant in the Old Town neighborhood for just over two years now. I've been meaning to go since I first moved in to the neighborhood but for one reason or another continued to put off a meal there. I finally made it to the restaurant and am so dissapointed I missed out on so many meals over the last two years. First, the food is absolutely delicious. Second, the entire staff was incredible. Third, the ambiance is perfect for any occasion - a date, a family dinner, or a group of friends. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone."

  • "Perennial Virant was our go-to brunch spot for special occasions (Mother's Day) and when we had family in town. Very accommodating for those with young children, though ours was under a year old so can not speak to the menu for them. Great menu selection and the food we were always more than satisfied with our meal. Waitstaff is great - quick and professional. I can not speak to dinner pricing, but their brunch menu is on par with the quality of the food and experience."

  • "This was my 2nd time dining at Perennial! Outstanding once again. Both Food and Service. It really does make a difference when you server can tell you about EVERYTHING on the menu. We will be back!"
