A word from Perbacco
Sleek and modern with one foot firmly in the Old World is the feeling at Perbacco. The restaurant boasts a brick wall original to the historic 1913 Hind building, with other touches such as a bar top and floor tiles made from white Carrara marble. With 16 seats at the bar and 7 more intimate tables, Perbacco creates an atmosphere for a glass of wine or a light bite. Perbacco also features 2 dining rooms, one on the main floor and a smaller one on the Mezzanine, which has the added allure of serving as "theater", with windows to watch all the action in the kitchen below.
Chef Staffan Terje strives to cook the finest food reflecting the Italian regions of Piemonte and Liguria. Handcrafted, house-made salami, prosciutto and other meats are featured at the salumi bar. Filled pastas, a tradition in Piemonte, range from the traditional ravioli to the more exotic agnolotti. Main courses feature traditional dishes such as Bollito Misto and milk-braised pork shoulder with Savoy cabbage.

  • "The food was delicious and the service outstanding. Nonetheless, the portions seemed really tiny."

  • "Perbacco is a great restaurant. Food was delicious. In-house salumi was tasty and got a good assortment. Portions are well-sized. Service was great, very attentive. Water was topped off all the time so you know they were paying attention to you. Upstairs booths are more quiet."

  • "The food was amazing and the service was great. This place would be good for a romantic dinner and also for a nicer business dinner. Our servers were knowledgeable about the food and the wine. It's pricey but worth it for a special occasion!"

  • "The tagliatelle was on the salty side but tasty to be sure. The halibut was prepared and served simply. It was nothing special but a good piece of fish. The cheese cake with pistachio sponge cake took the prize. Will have to try this establishment again and see if all the hype is justified. Dinner for two (with just one appetizer and one glass of Oregon Pinot) is around $120."

  • "We love the food here - the salumi misti, octopus, halibut, pappardelle are all great. Burnt caramel gelato to top it all off. Valet convenient if you don't want to trouble yourself finding parking."

  • "My husband and I love "B" wines and great Italian food; Perbacco exceeded our expectations across the board. From the minute we walked in the door we were delighted with such a fabulous aroma, and the food was amazing. We shared an appetizer, a pasta and an entree (like a primi, secondi style). And the wine list was excellent! Highly recommend Perbacco, we can't wait to go back."

  • "Spent a week last summer in Monforte D'Alba as base for visiting the Barolo hill towns and the city of Alba. Fell in love with food and the region. Perbacco brought my son and me back to the Piemonte. Great salumi plate, carne crudo, vitello tonnato, taglarin and olin, desserts worth the splurge, all enjoyed with very reasonably price Barbera and Barbaresco. Want to escape to Alba for a few hours, go to Perbacco."

  • "We had dinner at Perbacco's on our recent trip to S. F. We were pleased to see that the food was still as wonderful as during our last trip (not always a given). We had the grilled octopus and burrata for appetizers, then the scallops and short ribs for entrees. All were excellent. My scallops were succulent, and the blood oranges made for a surprising and delicious flavor combination. For dessert, we had a almond cake/chocolate combination that was good, but a little too sweet for my taste. Still, overall our best meal in S. F."

  • "Went here on date night with my wife and 7mos old daughter. Server was very polite and found us a great table. I wouldn't say it it's kid friendly in the sense of Disneyland, but if you have a well mannered child or quiet baby, enjoy yourself! The food is top notch, loved the wine selection."

  • "Like so many white table cloth restaurants, Perbacco caters to a rather stuffy business crowd. The service was lovely but not friendly. The food very nice but not memorable in the least. This is the perfect place for a bland client dinner."

  • "The food was awesome but the service was even better. Nothing like a wonderful server @ lunchtime who actually values your timeframe that you have for lunch. Took the leftovers and had them for lunch today and had an awesome lunch again today. A must for LUNCH in the financial district."

  • "Wonderful Italian food in an upscale but very busy establishment. All the staff were attentive but nearly invisible unless needed. Our enthusiastic waitress had an excellent grasp of the menu and offered thoughtful suggestions based on our preferences. Our table was attended to, at times by one of the two Maître ds. Memorable food at a reasonable price for the quality, presentation and service."

  • "I am amazed by their wide range of wine list especially Italian wine. I tired rabbit as my entree. It definitely exceeded my expectation. The best rabbit dish I've ever had."

  • "I love this place. Since I started working in the area, I have been to dinner a few times and just tried it for lunch yesterday. Everything I've had has never disappointed and service is always good. Good wine, good appetizers, fantastic entrees. My most recent visit was for lunch and decided to double the portion of and appetizer dish to have as my entree - PIASTRA SEARED LOCAL SQUID / CANNELLINI BEAN PASSATINA / CELERY HEART / ARUGULA / PRESERVED MEYER LEMON - The squid was perfectly seared. The dish was light and amazingly delicious! Love their lemonade as well. Their sister restaurant Barbacco is also great!"

  • "Great food is essential to a great dining experience. Very true at Perbacco, where every dish was exceptional. Our's included the quail Breast, the Tajarin (Tagliatelle with 5 hour pork and porcrini mushroom sugo), the Vegetable Ragout, white chocolate-giandula bar, and the Chocolate Sorbetto. But, any really memorable dining experience includes much more than the food. And all of the elements were present at Perbacco. The ambiance was great with two dining levels. The second level is quieter. Most importantly, the staff. were great. Both Ben, our server, and Catherine, a manager, were friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable, patient, and made great food and wine recommendations. We also enjoyed speaking with Umberto (owner?)."

  • "Food and service were great. Just did not like being charged for his employees health care. Let him raise his prices higher. I do not do that to my customers. So maybe it should be my right off."

  • "Perbacco has great food and exceptional service. Everything was very professional and it is priced fairly. We had a great time. Our only issue was that the main dining room is a little cramped for space, so it isn't a very intimate kind of dining place. But we would certainly go back! I would try the pasta because I didn't have any this time, but it looked good on other diners' plates. We did try the salumi though and it was delicious!"

  • "Good to find a resto in Fidi on a Saturday night that is not only open, but serves above average Italian food. Doors open at 5 PM on a Saturday, but service doesn't start until 5:30. Hey bartender, how about serving us some drinks while waiting for our table?"

  • "Bread was cold, the boss boy ignored us the whole time, the waiter only came by a couple times, the occtupus appetizer was burned, chardonnay wine was warm. "Just not good over all.""

  • "Booked a last minute reservation to celebrate a friend's promotion. Ordered a bunch of apps and a bottle of very reasonably priced wine. Everything was delicious."

  • "We had pasta and it was simply wonderful!! We had not been here in a while and really enjoyed this return visit. I am constantly amazed at the wine list. These folks do a great job all around."

  • "Excellent food and service, but too noisy for comfortable conversation."

  • "Very nice meal and Tamara (our server) was excellent. She made great recommendations (I had the rabbit gnocchi), a nice red wine, and she even knew her bourbons! Well done all around. Tight seating for 2-tops but a lively place."

  • "Risotto - over salted. Frito Misto - so, so. The string beans were too stringy. BURRATA CHEESE / MARINATED GREEN AND SHAVED PURPLE ASPARAGUS / CHARRED SCALLION VINAIGRETTE / MINT - wonderful, perfectly chilled, refined, tasty. SEARED SEA SCALLOPS / FENNEL PASSATO / CITRUS-ENDIVE SALAD / BLOOD ORANGE BUTTER (somewhat disappointing) - although the scallops were great, but the accompaniment of blood orange quarters diluted the flavor. SLOW ROASTED PORK SHOULDER / GREEN GARLIC RYE BERRY “RISOTTO” / ROASTED PORCINI JUS - wow!"

  • "Perbacco would be one of my very favorite restaurants downtown - great food, great service. It's just really, really noisy, consistently."

  • "I visited Perbacco for the first time on a Saturday night. After researching online, I discovered that this restaurant was highly rated so I thought I'd take my wife to Perbacco for her birthday. We made a 6:45pm reservation through OpenTable. I wasn't impressed with the food."

  • "Love the food, pasta's and meats are great. Financial district crowd. The noise level downstairs is a bit high making everyone shout into each other's ears. Upstairs the noise is better but usually reservered for larger groups."

  • "We had a party of five. Sat upstairs. Food was excellent. Only downside was that the place is very loud. It was hard to have conversation at our table without listening very intently."

  • "For the money and compared to other restaurants close by (the competition), this one doesn't quite measure up especially for the money. However their sister restaurant next door, I enjoy the food there more."

  • "Started with excellent small salumi platter, followed by incredible pesce crudo and burrata with asparagus. The Hamachi was amazing, and the asparagus coated with charred scallion vinaigrette was a revelation. I have often been disappointed by boring gnocchi, but we decided this might be the place that gets it right. Boy did they, the potato gnocchi was soft and fluffy, and the lamb ragu was perfect. We chose duck breast with buttered savoy cabbage, and braised rabbit with nettle polenta as our mains. Again, the dishes were superb, my only quibble was that I wanted a little more of the great polenta. The service was the best! All recommendations, including a great bottle of wine were perfect. Will return soon."

  • "Went to Perbacco, it's been a while, maybe a couple years. Meeting new friends for the first time. I'd say the food was basically very good, though there was one food item that has changed over the years. One of the best dishes, normally, is the vitello tonnato, veal with a tuna sauce, very northern italian dish. Normally the veal is sliced paper thin, on this occasion the veal was thicker and therefore tougher, a bit disappointing this time. As we came in early the service was very good but as the later crowd came in and got busy, we had not such good luck with the simple things as, keeping our water glasses full nor did they attend to refilling the coffee at the end of the dinner. Otherwise everything was very good to excellent."
