A word from Perbacco
Sleek and modern with one foot firmly in the Old World is the feeling at Perbacco. The restaurant boasts a brick wall original to the historic 1913 Hind building, with other touches such as a bar top and floor tiles made from white Carrara marble. With 16 seats at the bar and 7 more intimate tables, Perbacco creates an atmosphere for a glass of wine or a light bite. Perbacco also features 2 dining rooms, one on the main floor and a smaller one on the Mezzanine, which has the added allure of serving as "theater", with windows to watch all the action in the kitchen below.
Chef Staffan Terje strives to cook the finest food reflecting the Italian regions of Piemonte and Liguria. Handcrafted, house-made salami, prosciutto and other meats are featured at the salumi bar. Filled pastas, a tradition in Piemonte, range from the traditional ravioli to the more exotic agnolotti. Main courses feature traditional dishes such as Bollito Misto and milk-braised pork shoulder with Savoy cabbage.

Food was great-had scallops that were perfectly cooked, dining companion had duck also well prepared and presented. I love the fritto misto. Carmel gelato was great. Wine steward great recommendations. Tables too close. Especially when there are obnoxious people next to you. This is my 5 or 6th time here.

We have dined at Perbacco many times and it has been one of our "go to" restaurants in SF for some time now. The service this time was attentive, the Sommelier knowledgeable and helpful, but the food was just OK: the salads were unexceptional and the pasta was good, not great, and not as fine as we have come to expect. Given how much we like this restaurant we will give it another try, but both of us were somewhat disappointed about its showing this week.

Great food and service! Had the octopus appetizer as well as the barrata and heirloom tomato salad to start.....both outstanding! Main course pasta with the veal ragu was great as were the scallops! Shared the almond semifreddo dessert which was phenomenal! One of the very best!

A San Francisco Restaurant that can compete with the best of the best in The City. Interesting dishes, well prepared. Highly recommend both the Halibut and the Scallop entrees. We held our wedding luncheon here in May, all our guests were impressed. This was the first time we've returned for dinner and we will again very soon.

Reservation was made for a special birthday and noted at the time the reservation was made. On arrival the table we were seated at was perfectly out of the way, a card acknowledging the event was on the table and a beautifully present after-dinner treat presented. Service was impeccable. Food, cocktails, wines and attention to detail made the dining experience superb.

Three of us dined early on a Tuesday evening which is a good time as the restaurant is often full later and quite noisy (based on a visit shortly after it opened.) The roasted octopus first course was excellent and, unlike experiences elsewhere, the octopus portion was generous. My wife's duck was among the best she had ever experienced---ample, moist, cooked to a "T." My son and I each had the stuffed quail breast. What a treat! When one thinks quail breast one thinks small plate. Not so here. What had to have been a rather large breast is carefully stuffed with a chanterelle mushroom mousse encased in swiss chard and served on a bed of corn passata ( a very smooth and creamy polenta) and huckleberry jus. Outstanding!

We particularly appreciated that pasta dishes came in two sizes. We opted for appetizers and appetizer size pasta with a side vegetable dish. It turned out to be exactly the right amount and allowed us to sample more dishes, all of which were delicious.

I was expecting a traditional Italian restaurant when I booked, but it was very upscale and modern. My colleagues and I were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious. I ordered the beef short rib. It was excellent. One colleague ordered a pasta and said it was quite good. Presentation was very good as well.

Came here during our short stay in San Francisco. It was recommended by BIL. Did NOT disappoint. They knew we were on our honeymoon and our waittress congratulated us after we were seated. We booked a 5:45 p.m. seating, and by the time 6:30 rolled around the restaurant was packed (and it was only a Tues night, which was a good sign). Husband ordered fritto misto of shrimp to start; I ordered the carne crudo. Yum! Well portioned. For our mains, he ordered the short rib while I ordered the appetizer size pappardelle. We also got a side of the roasted brussel sprouts. It was definitely more than enough and neither of us had room for dessert, but they brought out lovely meringue cookies when our bill arrived. Def. coming back!

I had been wanting to go to Perbacco for years, but living in LA I never quite made it.. On this trip, my husband and I were incredibly impressed with it! The wine lust is extensive, the bottle we picked was perfect. The real standout on the menu is the pasta!! Inventive, delicious and all homemade. Never had pasta like that except in Italy!

We were hoping for a foodie experience while visiting SF. Out of the 4 mains, The Rabaton and Beef Spare Ribs were well designed and executed. Two were not well designed. The Duck was served with a pear mess that didn't compliment. The pork chop was bland and slightly underdone. The Chocolate Bonet and Hazelnut Cookies were a hit. Overall, we will keep looking for a standout Italian in the city.

Good service. Some dishes were excellent, some were so-so. Really enjoyed the octopus appetizer and the pork tagliatelle. Easy walk from the Palace Hotel. The décor upstairs is pretty stark and lacks character. Overall it was a nice evening, but we may look into somewhere else next time we visit The City.

My husband and I ate here 2 nights ago, and found the food and service to be excellent. The salumi platter was outstanding, and the shrimp and vegetable fritto misto were great. We also liked the pasta with 5 hour pork and the gnocchi with mushrooms very much and thought the duck main dish was very, very good. The Barbera wine was great. The service was unbelievably good--very helpful, attentive, and kind waitstaff looked after us without being overbearing or intrusive. Having eaten at excellent restaurants in northern Italy and in Boston (where we live), I can honestly say that Perbacco compares very favorably to the best of the best.

This is the first time I have been disappointed at Perbacco. Initial waitress was obviously preparing for her end of day and was not very attentive in spite of small number of occupied tables. We were finally handed off to the waiter replacing her who was more attentive. Unfortunately, when she put in our order she had the pasta course arriving at the same time as our entrees. Fortunately our waiter at that point took back the entrees and brought out fresh ones after our pasta course. I will go back, as I do enjoy this restaurant, but this particular instance was not their best showing.

Service and food is still grey, but the lunch used to be the same as dinner ... food concept and plating, now it seems that the lunch has been dumbed down to be simpler in terms of presentation and ingredients, almost even rustic. Food was still good, but not the way it used to be.

Foodies delight! Brilliant use of seasonal foods-picturesque and tasty. Each entree was unique and flavorful. We deferred to our waitress for a recommendation of an appetizer for the table of 5. She did not disappoint. The grilled squid with the smokey tomato sauce was wonderful and would be a great entree also. The squid was done to perfection - tender, tasty, succulent. Kudos to our waitress and staff upstairs-their timing was impeccable! The restaurant is normally very busy, sitting upstairs at the round tables felt a little roomier.

Enjoyed and shared three items from the menu amongst the 3 of us for a quick birthday celebration. I had noted on my Open Table account when making reservations - that it was a birthday celebration. The restaurant actually took note of it and had a signed card and birthday message for my friend! After the shared meal - which was a salad, pasta dish and fish dish (all were delish!) we also order dessert. The restaurant also brought out a birthday dessert for us - very nice touch! Great service - greeter, server, everyone were very nice and attentive! Will definitely be back to try more dishes.

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Perbacco. The food was outstanding. Tables are a little close together, but we were still able to converse easily. This is a little expensive, but well worth it. The menu here features incredibly fresh quality ingredients. I would advise traditionalists to check the menu before going. This is not your old style Italian ristorante. The food is more contemporary and unique. We look forward to returning.

The food was great. I brought my own bottle of wine and the waitress took it after I asked for it to be decanted. She did not tell me that it was a policy not to decant at the table. I had to ask her where our wine went. Do not think that is a good policy. People like to see there own bottle being decanted in front of them.
