A word from Perbacco
Sleek and modern with one foot firmly in the Old World is the feeling at Perbacco. The restaurant boasts a brick wall original to the historic 1913 Hind building, with other touches such as a bar top and floor tiles made from white Carrara marble. With 16 seats at the bar and 7 more intimate tables, Perbacco creates an atmosphere for a glass of wine or a light bite. Perbacco also features 2 dining rooms, one on the main floor and a smaller one on the Mezzanine, which has the added allure of serving as "theater", with windows to watch all the action in the kitchen below.
Chef Staffan Terje strives to cook the finest food reflecting the Italian regions of Piemonte and Liguria. Handcrafted, house-made salami, prosciutto and other meats are featured at the salumi bar. Filled pastas, a tradition in Piemonte, range from the traditional ravioli to the more exotic agnolotti. Main courses feature traditional dishes such as Bollito Misto and milk-braised pork shoulder with Savoy cabbage.

  • "Food is really outstanding. We enjoyed the salumi plate, octopus, and their version of caprese salad. Entrees were equally delish!! Service was a bit slow. It took about 10+ min to get a server to the table to take our order and we had to flag down servers for additional glasses of wine. Not horrible but easy to fix to make the overall experience 5 stars."

  • "Food is unique. Lot's of slow carb options, which is unusual with Italian. Can be a bit noisy but not as loud as Credo. Good place to sit at the bar, had a drink and eat if you are on your own."

  • "Have been to Perbacco several times before, and the meal did not disappoint. Hamachi appetizer & shrimp fritto misto appetizer both excellent. Sautéed scallops in shellfish ragout was a dish where I honestly savored every mouthful -- only wish there had been bread to sop up the sauce/stock (a habit acquired in Paris restaurants)! Short ribs were (according to my husband) excellent as well. Brussels sprouts were a bit disappointing this time around. The brutti ma buoni cookies seemed (as meringue cookie do) to have softened a bit in a humid environment, but were very tasty. The kitchen also served us a special melon sorbet with cookies as an additional anniversary dessert surprise that was fresh & refreshing. Thanks for a wonderful night."

  • "A very enjoyable experience. Food was very good, with a lot of variety (NO pasta dishes with red tomato sauce!!), and service was just about perfect -- courteous, helpful, prompt but not pushy. A pleasure."

  • "Food was great and service was impeccable! I do not eat pork so was worried there would be few dishes I could have with meat...however when I asked the server he suggested a braised beef dish that was great!"

  • "Best Northern Italian food in San Francisco! Superb food, and outstanding wines, thought is was in Turino, Italy!"

  • "Elegant and delicious. Very considerate service. Avoid sitting next to a big party if possible- the party of 6 next to us drowned out every conversation we tried to have. Rude and rowdy actually. But the experience was still very nice."

  • "First of all, OpenTable forced a 6:15 or 8 pm reservation so we took the 6:15. By 7pm, the restaurant was barely half full so I feel like OpenTable manipulated available tables to provide flexibility for the restaurant. Second, I felt the waitress did not serve us with the same attention she would other customers because my girlfriend and I look young. She was very quick with our orders and I suspect we got leftover food or an "experimental" dish. Our food came 10 minutes after we ordered and the noodles used for my girlfriend's dish were different than stated on the menu. Her pasta was very salty and my raviola was surprisingly bland. Disappointing since we came here specifically because we heard they had great pasta."

  • "We took friends here for a birthday celebration. The food was excellent and the service was great! Our friend was thrilled with the extra attention she received in honor of her birthday."

  • "We ordered one of every pasta-small plates to share plus one salmon and 2 veggies (Brussel sprouts and carrots). There were 4 of us and not a drop left. It was a 4 hour dining experience. We all loved it"

  • "Great location, thoughtful and local cocktail options, nice menu reflecting the cusp of spring-into-summer. Generous portions for the mains - almost too much, really. The dessert menu is absolutely delightful."

  • "Our server was very attentive and accommodating. When I was disappointed with my entrée, the owner returned with my alternate scrumptious selection ASAP! Couldn't ask for anything better than that! The cuisine is creative and delicious too!"

  • "Everything about Perbacco was wonderful. Service is polished and well coordinated. Our server was passionate about the food she was serving. I asked about a particular wine to go with the duck dish, she had a better suggestion, but allowed me a taste of what I selected. I was so glad I went with with her suggestion! I would love to go back soon."

  • "Great food, great atmosphere. Service a little slow as had to ask twice and wait for Sommelier. Got first course before had a chance to order wine. Presentation, quality of the food was excellent."

  • "Love this restaurant. The food was outstanding, the service friendly and attentive and the ambience was a good balance of of energetic buzz and romantic setting. I will definitely go back the next time I am in San Francisco."

  • "Food was good as well as service but this is an after business restaurant. Not conducive to a quiet romantic meal. You could barely hear your partner and all you heard was loud business conversation."
    Dined on 6/23/2014
  • "For lunch, I ordered the flank steak and it was one tough piece of meat. It took several minutes to swallow each piece as it required significant chewing. I would have returned the steak had the serviceperson ever stopped by to check in on me. Her otherwise, stellar service was marred by the fact that she never checked on how the food was. On the positive side, the brussel sprouts were delicious."

  • "It was recommended by a friend. Great recommendation. The service is professional. The servers are friendly, they know what they are doing. Great selection of various house made pastas. The food is creative and delicious. I had the octopus as appetizers and duck risotto as main dish, amazing Our waitress was extremely attentive. The wine list is a little bit overpriced even for SF."

  • "If there's an SF restaurant whose pasta is consistently as fresh, delicate and delicious as Perbacco's, we haven't found it. Everything else about the restaurant is excellent (though when crowded it can get pretty loud), but the pastas--garganelli, tajarin, fettucine, gnocchi, tagliatelle, whatever--are simply the best, and the sugos and other sauces complement them beautifully."

  • "The home-cured salami is a must to pair with Barolo."

  • ".... Our server was a true professional, with thoughtful recommendations and timely attention. We felt no pressure to 'turn the table' and not oversold on any menu items (we skipped dessert despite an appealing menu). Appetizers and entrees were creative, plentiful and most important, fresh and delicious. Gnocchi and scallops were table favorites. Before departing I sought out the restaurant manager to compliment the server, hostess and kitchen staff."

  • "We have eaten here many times and have our favorites on the menu but when we brought friends I realized then that the explanation of menu items was assumed and were not sure what foods were in Italian"

  • "I look forward to each visit to Perbaco. My husband is from Piedmonte and this is the real deal!"

  • "All of the dishes we had were both amazing and excellent! One learns quickly to slowly consume the foods because doing so brings out all sorts of flavors and tastes that just keep on building. Service was friendly and fine. To me, this is just a top shelf restaurant doing everything very well."

  • "Have eaten here a half dozen times now, always consistently delicious. Really great selection of various house made pastas (flavors and shapes sizes) with creative additions for sauce, sugo, or ragu's. They have a very nice entrée selection too with seafood and land options....lively place, always bustling but not to the point where the staff is stretched too thin. Plenty of quaint tables for two that serve well for one if you happen to be dining alone for the evening as I was this past weekend. I felt very comfortable and well taken care of. Will keep going back."

  • "Enjoyed everything about this restaurant. The food was outstanding! One of the best Halibut preparations ever. Will return to this reataurant the next time we are in San Francisco."

  • "This place is in the heart of the financial district and has a very busy lunch crowd. The staff here is very professional and cheerful and the food very good. It is really loud but I think that is par for the course in this district at this time of day. I would definitely go again to try something else on the menu!"

  • "IMHO, the hallmark of a top tier restaurant is its ability to deliver a consistently outstanding experience - food, service and ambience - time after time, year after year. Perbacco has been delivering this high level consistency since it opened years ago. It is truly a pleasure to dine there, and my wife and I view it as a very special place. The menu offerings are all superb, but the vitello di tonno appetizer and the duck breast main course are simply divine. Top off dinner with a glass of amaro - there is a great selection here!"

  • "This place was a fantastic spot. Sadly, this recent visit did not live up to the great memories from the past. The presentation of each course was well done, but the flavones were just so so."

  • "Front and back of the house are run as professionally as any restaurant in the city. Perbacco is the best Italian restaurant in SF, with fresh seasonal and exciting food. The servers are not only friendly and efficient but also really know the food and wine menus."

  • "Perbacco was recommended by a friend and it definitely lived up to the recommendation. Food was fabulous, especially the escargot, wine selection was very good and our server, Hengky, was superb. His knowledge of the wine and food was perfect!"

  • "This restaurant captured, for me and my husband, exactly what we were looking for as we searched to find fresh pasta. We wanted to stay away from the tourist traps in North Beach. The restaurant has an energetic atmosphere and it was packed at 7:30 pm. We started our meal with appetizers which were fresh and amazing. My husband had the octopus and I had the fritto misto of shrimp. Both appetizers were excellent. For dinner I ordered the herb and spinach ricotta gnocchi which was fresh, light and very tasty and perfectly portioned. My husband had the tagliatelle with pork and porcini and he had no complaints whatsoever. Our waitress was extremely attentive! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to all."

  • "The appetizers were great, the bar tender was fantastic, the food was very good and the waitress was surly. The noise level was just too much for me, I couldn't carry on a conversation and romance was out of the question"

  • "This was nowhere near a 4-star dining experience. For my business group of 4 having lunch at 1:30PM -- a light traffic occasion, though we were seated directly behind the waiter station (!) in a nearly empty restaurant, it took repeated calls to have water provided. The waitress walked by repeatedly and ignored us; never asked us how we were doing and rushed our order -- from taking the order to serving the food. The food (Sole- $22 and Eggplant-$24) was served with a disturbing amount of oil and artery clogging sauce. This place somehow earned a good reputation, but I see nothing that merits it. Very disappointing."

  • "We were delighted with our choice for a last evening meal in San Francisco on our vacation, having read the reviews we were not disappointed. The service was very good the food was really great and a wonderful wine selection. I have eaten Italian all over the world and this ranks as good as any that I have had. Every food course was great we could find no fault with the taste, the presentation and the balance of the dishes. Wish it was my local restaurant."
