A word from Pera Mediterranean Brasserie
Rated a Top 5 Newcomer by Zagat 2008, Midtown brings an authentic taste of eastern Mediterranean cuisine to Manhattan.

Pera derives its name from an elegant neighborhood in Istanbul that has served as the melting pot for many cultures and cuisines since the 17th century. Pera features numerous mezes, specially prepared and marinated cuts of grilled meats and seafood, traditional and modern Mediterranean side dishes and regional breads baked a la minute.

The main courses focus on delicately marbled grilled meats that are cooked on a 10-foot-long open flame grill. Guests can choose from a variety of different cuts of lamb, beef and chicken, or opt for the traditional chefs tasting menu featuring assorted successive servings of house specialties.

Private Dining, special events, full-service catering and delivery services are also available.

Tasting menu was very good and provided a broad array of dishes. The highlight were the grilled meats--lamb, chicken and beef ribs. The ground lamb was particularly good. The eggplant and hummus appetizers OK, the lentil and bulghur tartare plus lamb taco appetizers very good. The paired wines, a Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinto Noir, were well matched, though tiny quantities.

When we got there it was nice and quiet. But when the restaurant got filled up, it became very loud. So if you want to have a private, intimate conversation, it's almost impossible. Food and service was very good.

I always have a great food experience here-take clients here all the time--would like the tables to be not so close it is difficult to talk comfortably at times. Brussels sprouts were cold and not cooked -disappointment...mezzes were not at all good this evening--think the chef was out!

Be careful: Pera unilaterally canceled my OpenTable lunch reservation about 2 hours prior to the scheduled time. Luckily, we were aiming for the early side of the lunch rush, so we were able to eat at the bar. The host/management staff were not accommodating.

I moved in to our building roughly 1 year ago, and have seen the scene at Pera many times while walking by. After stopping recently to take a look at the menu I decided it would be nice to bring business guests to for lunch- due to both its proximity and its fare. After making that decision just a few weeks ago I have been back, and back, and back, and each time have had the same high level of service and quality of food. The signature lamb dish is outstanding, and the warm hummus and fizzie drinks are a great accompaniment.

I have had several nice lunches at Pera over the years. It is important to ask for a quiet table. There is nothing really quiet if it is crowded, but there are so stables towards the back which are OK.

I was very pleased with my overall experience at Pera, but most notably with the food. I'm from this part of the world and am generally very critical of Mediterranean/Turkish cuisine because I know how it's suppose to be done! The Lamb Adana was spot on...seasoned beautifully and cooked to perfection. My co-worker had the lamb burger and said it was the best he's ever had. We also shared an order of hummus and fries at the recommendation of our server which were both excellent. We contemplated getting a second order of fries. Friendly and competent service. Impressive selection of wines by the glass as well. I had a very nice Vermentino. I will definitely be back.

I had been to Pera once for dinner and it was so loud I could not hear the other two people at the table. I was told by the waiter it was because of a birthday party at the bar. However, I returned for lunch and it was just as loud. You could actually hear the noise on the street. Having said that the food was quite good (two of us had the lamb twist which was very tasty and one had the lamb burger which he raved about). The service was very solicitous. It was our waiter's first day but when he couldn't answer our questions another waiter (gently) took over for him.

  • 3rd Visit and Struck Out
    OpenTable Diner Since 2008VIP
    Dined on 9/22/2014
This was my 3rd visit to this location and the food is still above average, but the service hit an all time low. The server did her best to rush us through our meal (even though the restaurant was half empty), brought the wrong wine, then advised us that they were out of our wine selection and suggested a different bottle (which was $40 more per bottle), proceeded to spill wine on the table while serving, reached across the table to serve the wine (instead of walking around the table to pour each glass) brought unordered dishes to the table, and had the table cleared before we were finished. we ordered after dinner drinks..... and we were not surprised when she came back and said they were sold out of the drink! Disappointing service.

Recent mid-week visit after some time---and the spot has held it's quality and high standards! Very convenient to meet out-of-town guests or for business. Mediterranean menu with wide appeal to different palates. Tasting menu a delight if you are not familiar. Loads of yummy mezes/small plates. Lively and very busy from 7-9pm weeknights, but service still prompt and friendly. Good choice for small groups (hosted an event here in past). London friend impressed this visit. Can't really go wrong---but if you want a quiet experience, ask best time when you book.

Pera is delicious and truly a gem in the culinary wasteland of midtown. Based on the food, I would normally give a thorough recommendation of the restaurant. The grapefruit, avocado, and octopus salad is divine! However, waiting 30 minutes beyond the reservation, when you and your clients arrived early is unacceptable. Having walk-ins seated before you is also unacceptable. Wish it had been a better experience becauseI was hoping this could become my go-to client lunch spot.

At a work lunch, my colleague had reported a nut allergy before ordering the fish sandwich (which we were assured contained no nuts). Halfway through the meal, my colleague started wilting. We opened the bread only to discover...chopped walnuts! We challenged the waiter - who had then AGAIN reassured us there were NO nuts - to bring out the chef. Due to the confusion, the epi-pen was not used. Finally, the waiter came out to confirm those were walnuts, and would he like another dish? By then, he was already in an ambulance! "Due to the inconvenience," the manager removed the sandwich from the bill. Only after I dropped the word "liability" did they waive another 50%?! *Seriously* lacking on the service front all around.

Food was good, seating was beyond uncomfortable which made the meal one I couldn't wait to end! Waiter was unattentive and rolled his eyes put off by my husband's request to purchase a different beer after a first sip & decided he didn't like the Turkish spice flavor. As I did not have change & did not want to wait for it, we decided to go ahead & leave a 25% tip. He took it said "be right back" and when I said you can keep the rest - he looked back down at it and turned and walked away without saying thank you. Food was great though. The tables were pushed too close together & we felt too much a part of the intimate conversation next to us!
