The atmosphere and the food were fantastic! I am not sure if it was being upstairs that was the problem, but the service was awful. We never did get our bread that we ordered as an additional paid item, nor did the people sitting next to us. When we were at the end of the meal, we were brought the bill immediately before asking us if we wanted coffee or desert. It was a bit rushed and uncomfortable as I was with a client.

I would like to see Per Diem improve the quality of the food. They either add too much oil to all the dishes, or there are too many bread dishes. My chicken dish was to spicy. Their pizzas have too much dough/bread and little of the main filling. It is new so they are very busy but it will die out if the food continues to have high calories in fat and bread. I will not be inclined to take my clients out to lunch here. The staff are friendly and the service is superb.

My friend and I had such high hopes for our evening at Per Diem. Unfortunately, they were dashed early-on in our experience. The service was inattentive and awkward. It took forever for our bottle of wine to arrive. The wine that I selected with the wine steward's assistance did not match the description he had given me. Our first course, the rapini pizza, took a half hour to arrive, and when it did, it was cold! While the bucatini and the rapini side dish were both delicious and cooked perfectly, the brisket was dry, overcooked, and inedible. Our other vegetable dish was mushy and nondescript. Neither my friend nor I will be going back unless and until they work out the kinks.

12 minutes passed between the first entree being delivered and the 4th entree. the brisket has the consistency of a brick. The pasta dishes were MUCH better. Too bad as the design and decor of the place is fantastic, but the food and service is lacking for dinner. I hear it is much better for lunch. I might recommend lunch.

Interesting space...the upstairs is a much easier setting to have a conversation than the downstairs. Three of us ate there, and we had: crab sandwich, panzanella salad & minestone soup, and a one of their pizzas. Everything fine except the soup. It arrived luke warm and for the most part it was an onion and white bean soup, and had a funky greenish color to it. We will certainly return and we will hope for good things!

This place really needs to work out the kinks. It has a limited menu, which to me means everything should be perfect. Not so much...We started with shrimp cocktail - how can you mess that up? It was 4 sad shrimp and a bland sauce. The main, a brisket w/ lentils was icky! The brisket was over cooked and the lentils undercooked. Our dessert of apple crisp, the crisp was great but the apples weren't cooked enough! The hostess needed more training as she left us standing at the front for 15 minutes as she checked out the table situation, and we were finally seated on the first floor with a lovely view of the diner next door being vacuumed. I could go on and on about the service and the food, but there's not enough space!

The food was excellent, the service, however, sorely lacked. We sat at the bar and not only did the bartender hardly pay attention to us (even while she was just standing around), when I ordered a new glass of wine, she poured right into my existing glass, which would normally not be an issue with me, but considering I still had a quarter glass of wine left, she basically short-changed me on my second glass.....and she didn't ask before reusing the glass - a big faux pas.

I loved food and service on my first visit, but things were different the second time. Two of us loved our lunches (crab melt and vegetarian lasagna). My other friend liked her soup and salad, and asked for bread when her food came. It took 15 minutes to get the bread ($3) and the rest of us were almost done eating by then. My lunch was the worst. It was a turkey sandwich with fennel slaw and apple. I was expecting roast turkey, but it was smoked. Maybe the cognoscenti know that "Diestel" turkey means smoked turkey, but the restaurant should not assume diners know this. It should be clarified by the waiter if not on the menu. There was no "slaw." There were two thin slices of fennel and the same of apple. Meh.

My only beef with the restaurant (during lunch) was the fact that when I checked in with the Maitre d', he failed to inform me that my party has already arrived and was seated. I sat and waited for 10 minutes near the front entrance 'waiting' for my friend. She finally had to call me and ask me if I was running late..Turns out she sat upstairs the entire time. I found that a tad annoying and that's why I marked the services only as 'very good'...otherwise the waiter himself was amazing!!! The food was amazing, and would consider a return for dinner or lunch.

I'd eaten lunch at Per Diem several times, and quite enjoyed their crab sandwich, but decided to branch out and try something else for dinner. I ordered the truffle brisket and was prepared to feast upon tender meat with delicious au jus. What arrived, however, was tough triangles of brisket, not remotely fork tender, and with no juice on the plate whatsoever. The result was a very dry, unpalatable meat, surrounded by equally dry lentils. Very disappointing. Perhaps it was a bad night, the chef accidentally overcooked the dish, or something equally as understandable, but the result was quite poor. I will give them another try in the future, perhaps once the promised duck confit that is advertised online, actually makes it to the menu.

Per Diem has been open for less than 3 weeks and what a new gem it is. For an appetizer, we had a simple crostone with burrata drizzled with honey and sliced almonds. The burrata was delicate and light. The local honey gave the burrata a pleasant sweetness and with the added texture of crunch with the sliced almonds, I was quite impressed by the delicious outcome for such a simple combination of ingredients. For the main entree, we were intrigued by the pork belly special. The dish was perfect for a cold, rainy evening. It was wholesome, yet delicate. The pork belly cooked to perfection on a bed of fagiole and paired with a sweet apple/pear chutney that brought all the flavors together. A little sweet with savory tickled my taste buds

Per Diem popped up on the scene just recently, and it adds a cool bar/dinner option to the existing line-up of "Sutter Gutter" favorites for the downtown post-work crowd. The bar scene is hoppin' but can get packed quickly as there's not a ton of space, so arrive early. The noise on a Thursday night was through the roof, so be weary of tables right next to the bar unless you've brought a bullhorn. The food was top-notch, starting with the panzanella salad! My girlfriend had the papardelle and I enjoyed the bucatini...both were perfectly done pastas with tasty sauces and fresh ingredients. The wine list is small but the buttery chard is the way to go! I look forward to Per Diem opening up their top floor seating and will be back.

I decided to stop at Per diem on my way to a lecture on Second street that evening at The Solarium. If you go expecting to enjoy your dinner, you will be disappointed. The noise level in the restaurant was ridiculous and the food wasn't much better. I chose the orechiette and my dinner companion had the burrata pizza. Regardless of the fact that we couldn't even dialogue around the overcrowded bar area while we tried to eat dinner, the food wasn't worth the effort of staying to even finish our meal. The orechiette wasn't cooked(I like my pasta al dente not like cardboard with a crunch.) Once the downtown bar crowd moves on, I imagine this place won't have much staying power as a restaurant and will probably turn over into something else.

This was my second time. I am glad I had a great experience the first time with the food, because the second time was questionable. Ambiance/Service = off-the-charts great. I ordered the same meal twice - pasta with arrabbiata sauce and shrimp. The first time, four shrimp cooked to perfection, an awesome sauce and appropriate lunch portion of pasta. The second time, four shrimp cooked to perfection, the sauce was overwhelmed with capers and a minimal amount of pasta, in fact the shrimp was the majority of the plate. I will try it again, hope the consistancy is better. Great location.

Dinner for 4 on a Friday night. Fairly limited menu was pretty casual (sandwiches, pizettas) but did not disappoint. The burrata appetizer and chard pizetta were both excellent. I had the pork ragu buccatini (very good) and my wife had a show-stealing crab sandwich. The wine list was varied, interesting, and allowed for a range of budgets. Cocktains were good - my wife had a Presbyterian, which they knew how to make, always a pleasant surprise. The food and bar service were good, every main dish arrived simultaneously, and everyone was frindly. Only downside: after barely two hours the manager told us (less than tactfully) that they needed to turn the table which was a rather abrupt end to our evening.

Bummer that this place is right by my office and I will never go back. It was the most bland, mediocre food I've been served in a restaurant in a long time. Teeny servings, too. The menu descriptions are misleading. I thought the root vegetable salad, which cost $12 or $13, would be substantive enough to be an entree. It turned out to be four baby beets, a ton of croutons, some lettuce and a bland burata. In retrospect, I think the waitperson "upsold" me on the glass of wine I ordered, so I ended up with the most expensive wine on the list. My two colleagues were equally underwhelmed (one had the Buccatini and the other a pizetta). We all left feeling ripped off and still hungry.
