A word from Peppercorns Grill
Peppercorn’s Grill and Piccolo Arancio are owned and operated by the Cialfi siblings, Sal, Dino, Tina, and Rosa. Brothers Sal and Dino purchased Peppercorn's Grill in 1989 and they, along with younger sisters Tina and Rosa opened Piccolo Arancio in 1994. This generation of Cialfi's has added modern creativity and personality to traditional strengths of their Italian upbringing.
Sal and Dino were trained in the art of Italian food at their uncle's restaurant in Rome. When their uncle felt that the two brothers education was complete, he helped them open their own restaurant in Rome, Piccolo Arancio and became internationally acclaimed within their first year. Now operated by their cousins, Piccolo Arancio remains near the Trevi Fountain in Rome.
Both restaurants produce award-winning cuisine and continue to receive high honors and awards. This may Marked the 10th consecutive year the both Peppercorn's Grill and Piccolo Arancio received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence

Diner Reviews
  • "Food was ok. Service was appalling. I received the wrong entree not once but twice and the waitress had the cheek to blame me!"

  • "Staff did a fantastic job of making a special meal for someone on a limited diet. Not only did it conform to the restrictions and come to the table at the same time as everyone else's meal, but was presented artistically and tasted fantastic!"

  • "I really like Peppercorns, as my earlier review states. But this time the kitchen seemed off. I brought a group of 8 to host a nationally renowned speaker after his talk. I noticed he didn't eat much of his bucatini, which saddened me. While my tonno siciliano affumicato vitello e polpo carpacciato was excellent, I was disappointed with my fettuccine alla bolognese con aragosta & will not order it again. Two other "regulars" in my group also expressed disappointment with the bucatini, and the salmon. Pro: the single malt selection is quite extensive, including ages not mentioned on the menu.Every kitchen can have an off night; after over a dozen times it was bound to happen. Too bad it happened on a night I was hoping to impress my guest."

  • "I though the Food was just "ok" for the price. I wasn't impressed with the dessert meau ! Over all not a bad ambiance !!"

  • "Food was good, as usually. Restaurant was extremely busy due to folks going to the Bushnell for the evening play. Once these diners departed, the only noise we heard was from the kitchen - what was the banging about?"

  • "We told our waitress that we were going to the Bushnell for a show and had two hours. Service was excellent and perfectly timed. We were never rushed and had the right amount of time to leave the restaurant and make our show. She was very friendly and attentive. The food was wonderful. The four of us had four different entrees and we all finished everything. One member in our group really wanted a ceasar salad which was not on the menu and they willingly accommodated her with an excellent salad. My salmon was extremely tender and the pasta dishes the others had looked generous and very good. We would go back there again. Good wine selection as well. This was not my first time here and every time is great."

  • "A charming Italian restaurant that's a staple in Hartford. We dined here before a show at the Bushnell in March, 2014. Our waitress was lovely and attentive. My friend ordered the tuna, rare. I wanted the risotto - a daily special. We were served bread and olive oil to start. The bread looked like standard sliced white bread. Bland and unimaginative. My risotto entree was made with a variety of mushrooms. A bit stingy with the veal shank, but the dish tasted great. Ample serving of risotto. My friend's tuna was served with veggies. She ate every bite and said it was delicious. We decoded to share the warm chocolate cake with hazlenut ice cream for desert. Yummy! The coffee was fresh and rewarding."

  • "Loved the service, loved the atmosphere, loved some of the food. They fell down on the risotto special entrée (was not Arborio rice, had the texture of regular long grain white rice), the octopus app (tasty but gritty), and the bread basket (plain white slices, not nice crusty Italian or focaccia or something you'd expect from an Italian restaurant). But 3 other entrees and apps were executed well so it may be worth another try. Waitress was perfect, and timing/pacing just right. Not rushed but got out to theater in time. Pleasant ambiance."

  • "I took my mom here after seeing a show a the bushnell for her birthday. I had been here a few times before and was always impressed with the food and service. This time.... They hit it out of the park! Our server was fantastic! Extremely polite, and attentive....even with the seven tables he had! Def will be back again!!!"

  • "but the restaurant, not so much. The dining room was cramped and loud. Apparently they have a "sister" restaurant in Farmington, I may check it out."
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "The cocktails, food (carpaccio, veal chop and salmon) was excellent as was the overall service. I must say that there was an extremely long lul between the appetizers and service of entrees....it seemingly was not the waitresses fault and she was quite appologetic but everyone who arrived AFTER us was servived their entrees well before us. If this was the first time I would not be concerned but, oddly, this also happened on our first visit last summer. Fortunately we allowed enough time to eat prior to having to walk down to the theater for the 7:30pm performance but the timing was a lot tighter than it should have been... I hope thsat the next time we visit this does not occur again as we do like the food and staff."

  • "The food was excellent, but the service was horrible. Long delay, wrong order, no refill of water glasses, no time for desert because of delay and they threw away our leftovers instead of wrapping up for us. Maybe they do better on a less busy night."
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "I asked for my tuna to be cooked medium and it was rare. They took it and brought it back well done. I would rather eat it rare than well done. I could not even eat the last piece it was so overcooked. It was half eaten by time they came back to the table to see if everything was ok. I don't mind rare tuna but I like it much better cooked a little. i wish I had not said anything but the waitress did ask and she noticed that it was very rare and offered to get it cooked a little more for me."

  • "We decided to have dinner at the Peppercorn Grill for the first time before going to the Book of Mormon at the Bushnell. The service was ok--the servers were very busy and there was not a lot of interaction. The food was ok-- I don't think it was worth the amount of money we paid though. I don't think we will be returning to the Peppercorn Grill."

  • "We arrived at an inopportune moment at this restaurant. There was a show at the Bushnell and there were a number of folks who were all trying to get out in time for that show. We had a reservation at exactly the changeover time. Things were a bit crazy. We were patient but after the rush our waiter could not recover. The service we received was awful. The good news was the food was particularly good. In fact it was outstanding. Portions were generous. I am sure on another evening service would be fine. Try it!"

  • "Fantastic begining to a wonderful evening of entertainment. Outstanding liquor selection and my martini was perfect! Servers were attentive but not intrusive, food was outstanding. This place is a gem."

  • "Overall we had a great dinner and the food was excellent. Our only issue was that the place was packed and very loud. Tables are close together and there was waiting staff literally running all over the place. On their defense this was right before a Bushnell show so I'm sure it's their busiest time, but I wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking for a nice quiet romantic dinner. Save it for a group dinner if you can."

  • "While I enjoyed my meal, I feel it was overpriced. My meal was $24 and consisted of 4 ravioli. that is a $6 ravioli. We also ft rushed. Granted, it doesn't take long to eat 4 ravioli. We ordered dessert and coffee. It was almost impossible to get a 2nd cup. Twice, during dessert we were asked if we were done, even with food still on my plate. I am glad I tried it but won't be going back."

  • "My boyfriend and I were seeing a show at The Bushnell, and we decided to pick the closest restaurant to the theatre, park at the Bushnell, and walk to the show after eating. We could not have picked a better place. First, the restaurant was three blocks away, sohe walk was very short. Second, the food was incredible. My boyfriend had the rotini with sausage and he very much enjoyed it. I had the soup of the day (heirloom tomato soup) and the tricolor salad. Both of which were excellent. Then for dessert we split the molten chocolate cake with hazelnut gelato. The portions for the main courses were generous, and the food was worth the price. We tried to eat inexpensively and managed to keep it under $60 for the two of us including tip."

  • "Very friendly service and excellent food. Not the typical Italian fare. Hartford is lucky to have a restaurant of this caliber. Marcel was a very attentive waiter."

  • "I dined at Peppercorn's about 17 years ago... and it was very popular and exceptionally good then. Well... it is still outstanding with their menu, service and quality. They were very accommodating to our group of 7. The asparagus salad was delicious as was the fluke special. Others in our group raved about the filet mignon and the veal filet. Excellent wine list and we also enjoyed the prickly pear martini. The créme brulée was an excellent finish to a wonderful meal."

  • "I took my wife on an impromptu date night at Peppercorns Grill. Cheers to Chef Dino and his staff of professionals, who made our experience just right. The restaurant was packed as they were accommodating guests who were dinning before the show around the corner, and they were able to squeeze in my late afternoon reservation. All per-show guests were able to enjoy their incredible Italian cuisine and make the event in a timely fashion. My wife and I were also well taken care of even though we were not on our way to the show at the end the manager Armal brought us a lemonchelo tiramisu, and my i just say the best tiramisu i have ever taste it. As a chef, with a well experienced palate, I highly recommend this Hartford institution."

  • "Peppercorn's is a great find in the small city of Hartford. The amazing food is comparable to NYC restaurants if not better. I thoroughly enjoy the fish and seafood items. The fresh pasta with fresh seafood is a work of art and don't forget to try the baked berries and bananas with mascarpone zabaglione. I had the kitchen add chocolate chips to the baked fruit and it was to die for. We certainly will be back to try more seafood and desserts."

  • "Outstanding Italian food and wine list. I've been a customer of Peppercorns for over five years- mostly for business dinners - and it feels like it gets better every time I go back. Impeccable service, creative, unique and and well though out Italian dishes. Can't praise it enough."

  • "Ate here the other night and thought the food was decent. A bit overpriced in my opinion. Waitress was new and made a few mistakes, but she was sweet and friendly. Took about 30 minutes to get our pasta entree after ordering and my friend's dish came out luke warm as if it had been sitting for a few minutes waiting for my dish to be made. Overall the food was decent, but at the price point which we paid, I expected more. Would maybe give this restaurant another try in a few months to give it a second chance."

  • "Very good food. Waitress seemed nice, but also aloof. After taking our drink orders, she got involved with a couple other tables and then a large table (party of 12+). We waited at least 20 mins without bread, or our wine and when I got her attention once she said -- be with you in a minute. at least 5 passed by and then my wife flagged the maitre'd to ask if he could help - to which the waitress quickly jumped in and said "I got it!" and shooed him away. Our friend nicely said "it seems you got busy with that large party" to which she said "No! -- I'm not overwhelmed at all!"....and brusquely took our order. While the appetizers/salads and the rest of the meal were very well done -- unfortunately the service let the experience down."

  • "First, let me start off by saying that our waitress Nicoke totally made the experience. She was animated from the beginning of the night. She knew her menu inside and out. She was also quite attentive to is throughout our dining experience. The food as always is outstanding. We started with an asparagus salad and beef carpaccio. Wow. For dinner my brother ordered osso bucco that just fell off the bone. Dessert was just as fab! This place is a must try!"

  • "Food and service was top notch. Can't wait to go back."

  • "I hadn't been to Peppercorns in a few years but decided to go there for my birthday dinner because they have my favorite Italian food on the menu. Specifically, my favorite Italian dinner is fried calamari, osso buco, and tiramisu. I searched several of Hartfrod well know restaurants and none of them except for Peppercorns had all three, so that is where we went. All three of these classic dishes were excellent! The service was attentive but not overly so and the atmosphere was subdued and just the right touch to make the evening a fine celebration. It won't be a number of years before we return!"

  • "Just took too long for service - to get recognized at the start, and then 25 minutes between the time we finished our salads and we were served our entrees. Food was quite good when it finally arrived."

  • "Going to Peppercorn's is like a piece of "La Dolce Vita". We had an incredible meal yet once again at Peppercorn's. A leisurely meal with amazing antipasti. The beef carpaccio along with the lobster carpacciato were sublime. For main course we chose two amazing pastas one the bucatini all'amatriciana and the other tagliolini with seafood. Both were so good I felt like I was in a Roman trattoria. We ended with a new version of tiramisu with lemon flavors and limoncello Once again that hit the high note also. The wine list is extensive and please any palate from inexpensive to high end. All in all a great evening at Peppercorn's. We'll see you again and again."

  • "I have finally been to Italy and these two brothers really know authentic Italian cuisine. The food is simply elegant and the flavors wowed us. Had the bucatini all'amatriciana thick spaghetti with Italian bacon, San Marzano tomatoes, and pecorino romano and we all loved it. I never saw true guanciale pancetta in the USA till I dined at Peppercorn's. The service was relaxed but very efficient. Our server was very perceptive and helped make our evening very ertaining. We will definitely go back for many ocasions to come."

  • "Homemade pasta and great options on the menu, Peppercorns delivered a great dining experience. We will be back."
    Dined on 2/22/2014
  • "The homemade pasta was excellent and the sesame bread was very tasty. The entree portions were 'right sized' and the house salad was fresh with a variety of veggies, topped with fresh parm. slices. On the flip side, the tables in the main dining area were very close together and other than salad a Vegan is very limited dining here. The chef did try to improvise an entree with Farro and lots of vegetables, but the olive oil dressing left the dish without the Wow factor."

  • "We were late for our reservation and had tickets to a Bushnell show, so short on time! The staff was very accommodating when we gave this info upon ordering. We had time to enjoy our OUTSTANDING meal and still got to the show on time. The fried calamari was the best we've ever had!"

  • "Perfect option for foodies who love a great Italian restaurant. Home made pastas and a great selection of seafood options for fish and shellfish lovers even those of us who prefer to pass on the pasta! Delish!"

  • "Outside of the main downtown area, Peppercorn's is located on Main St., within walking distance of the Bushnell Theater and the Wadsworth Atheneum. One of the best Happy Hours in town - offering discounted wines, specialty drinks and appetizers. With a selection of salad, soup, bruschetta, and calamari complimented by fried hot pepper rings and lemon rounds! Most recently, I had the i Rigatoni alla Boscaiola, it was delicious and perfectly spicy by request. Many of the pasta selections are freshly made and all are delicious - the gnocchi is out of this world and the Ravioli alla 'Arancia is sublime - my recommendation for a first time Peppercorn's diner! Cozy atmosphere and amazing food - a great place to have a leisurely meal!"
