A word from Peony Pavilion
Peony Pavilion, a Japanese, Dim Sum, Thai, Chinese and Asian Fusion, BYO restaurant with a lush, exotic, romantic decor and a star-studded culinary team, is the newest addition to Princeton's vibrant dining scene. The unique menu takes its cue from time-honored East Asian cuisines with contemporary approaches using the freshest, finest ingredients to be found. Peony Pavilion is named after a famous 16th century Chinese opera. The peony, which symbolizes good fortune, peace, prosperity and nobility, is interwoven throughout Peony Pavilion's dramatic interior design.

Major renovations to the former Sunny Garden restaurant create an exotic and romantic atmosphere, Peony Pavilion features several unique dining areas, and a dramatic foyer with a soaring ceiling and dangling, jewel-like red pendant peony motif chandeliers. Comfortable and discreet booths line the main dining room where a large, popular sushi bar commands center stage.

The points are for the food only. Very unhappy to give a poor review because the food is quite good. This is the second time the service has been quite poor and blamed on "kitchen backup". The restaurant was only 75% full, so no problem there. We were told while ordering that given the kitchen issues, all of our courses would be served together. Actually our soup and mains (pad thai) were served together, and our sushi app much later. Had to roam around the restaurant to find soy sauce. The food is good, but not worth the aggravation.

  • Bad Choice

This was a bad place. First we waited 15 minutes at our table before anyone came to say hello. When waiter came with water we told him we were ready to order, he said he will be right back. He returned 10 minutes later. So we were already seated for almost 1/2 hour before giving our food order. There were 4 of us and one of the orders came 1/2 hour later. (one hour after arriving). Then they brought over 2 other items 10 minutes later that did not belong to us. No one came to discuss this so we had to go find a waiter to get attention. Our other 3 meals finally came ( 1/and 1/2 hours after arrival. One meal was totally bad, another was mediocre at best, mine was very tasty but not hot enough. People at nearby tables were also complaining that their orders were wrong and that they waited very long.

First time diners. Went because of a coupon. Not disappointed. Ambiance was nice. Food was excellent. Chilean sea bass was yummy. Service was surprisingly slow considering it was not crowded and they had lots of wait staff. Would go back though. Nice BYOB find.

The food was delicious, the ambiance was perfect, and the service was great! We ordered beef satay and Thai coconut flounder in citrus sauce from the specials menu and Szechuan rack of lamb from the regular menu. Beef satay is one of our favorite dishes and the beef satay at Peony Pavilion was probably the best we've ever had. I really hope it stays on the menu. (the flounder too!) We were surprised that the flounder and lamb were served as individual entrees, rather than family style. Each dish looked like a work of art - beautifully plated and very elegant. We wanted to share, so we just traded plates. The flounder was incredible and the lamb was excellent. They were both delicately flavored - less Asian and more fusion? Definitely not what you'd find at a traditional Thai or Szechuan restaurant, more like food at a "special occasion" restaurant. There were more traditional choices on the menu that we intend to try another time. We also want to come back for dim sum. We brought wine because we didn't know they sold NJ wine by the bottle. (Something else to try next time.) The ambiance was delightful. The restaurant, which is very large, is divided into two rooms by sheer curtains. It was both elegant and comfortable. I was happy to see at least one large round table - perfect for a large family gathering or a group of friends. The waiters were personable and friendly and provided excellent service. Overall, it's one of the best restaurants in the area and I'm looking forward to going back.

My colleagues and I went to this restaurant for a department lunch based on raving reviews (5 diners in total). The decor is very nice, but it seems to be a bit too dark for lunchtime. Unfortunately, we all agreed that we were a bit disappointed in our overall experience. Firstly, it was a bit awkward when 2 entrees came out first, then the 3 remaining people had to wait a long time for their meals to arrive. One of my colleagues did not enjoy her meal. Though the server did offer and brought her something else, she was equally disappointed in her second choice. The dessert menu had some good choices, but we were disappointed in the size of the desserts vs. the price charged for them. We probably won't go there again.

The food and service was amazing. The only reason I even looked into this place was because of the glowing colors you see that light up the name of the building when driving down Meadow Road. So I looked online to see what type of food was there. I'm glad it caught my eye because my girlfriend and I will be back.

I've been studying the menu for a bit, and finally decided to go for Dim Sum on a Sunday morning. The steamed pork buns were wonderful, as were the steamed golden buns. The golden buns had a sweet filling, and are definitely craveable! We loved the spicy crab shumai and the spicy salmon dumplings, which were both deep fried. The only complaint is there were only three for per $5.95 serving. I think we could have eaten three times the amount of those, they were so great. The only disappointment was the steamed chicken bundles. The filling was chewy and indiscernible (something white with an odd texture was in there) and that was the only thing we left on our plates.

We Have been frequent visitors since it's opening. Food is consistently good with a good menu. I was disappointed lately that their week day lunch boxes are no longer available and it's substitute was a far cry from the lunch box offering. Also that a couple of months ago they stopped offering home delivery... Usually a restaurant adds more services as it matures - not less.

My fiance is a local "foody" . She noticed a difference in the cooks style and presentation imediately. Unfortunately both her and my son were in agreement that the changes in the sushi ingrediants (avocado replaced by cuccumber), the texture of the rice, and amount of vegetables used in the fried rice dish was below previous visits. Also, she noted a faint fishy smell with her sushi indicating a lack of freshness.

Dim sum terrible. Don't get the ribs with black bean sauce or the shrimp dumplings. Ribs were like small vertebre in a tasteless brothy sauce. Shrimp dumplings too sticky and had to fight to get shrimp out of the dough. Service mediocre. Took a long time to get 3 dishes. Pork bun good.

Peony Pavilion is a great place for sushi and Asian Fusion cuisine. The sushi is super fresh and rolls are unusual combinations. The one must-have is the filet mignon carpaccio, it is out of this world. They are changing up the recipe and checked in on whether the current version or the former was preferable (I vote for the former). The sea bass entree was wonderful with a subtle mix of flavors of the miso sauce.

We had some very good sushi, sashimi, fresh uni and tuna tataki but the fusion Island Duo dish of scallops and shrimp was a disappointment. The sauce of tomatillo and avocado was what enticed me and although the shellfish was well prepared the sauce was cloyingly sweet which I found very off-putting. Not a good combination. Otherwise everything was great.

My wife and I have been looking for a Japanese / Asian place in the Princeton area, that has not only great food but also a nice and comfortable interior. This is it. The interior is real delight, it is very comfortable and you feel in a different continent. The service was very good. We tested some new meals, new special rolls and it was great. Overall pricing is reasonable. It looks like we found our new favorite restaurant.

Wanted to get some sushi, but wanted to dine out, so decided to try this restaurant since it changed ownership and food focus. The restaurant was welcoming, and the service friendly and respectful. The portions were quite substantial and the presentation was elegant. an Per my request, hey prepared a dish that was not on the menu (chicken tempura roll) and it came out delicious. It was and enjoyable experience and I will return. The owner said business has been quiet, but that evening was surprisingly busy. I hope traffic picks up and they are successful, because they seem to be hardworking and aiming to provide a pleasant dining experience.

I don't ordinarily take the time to write a review, but we went to Peony Pavilion Saturday evening and it was fabulous. You know a restaurant is good when it is more or less catered to adults, you enjoy a two hour meal, and your 13 year old son is telling you the next day how excellent it was. Great spacing on seating. They can accomodate groups of 6 and 10 at round tables. Low noise. Great food, better service. I would go there as a couple or as a family. Just go.

We enjoyed smoked duck, back ribs and coconut shrimp for appetizers. The soba noodles with vegetables and lamb were very good. The chicken tempura came last. The chicken was dry, there was an excess of batter that wasn't cooked all the way through, still gummy next to the chicken. That was too bad, because the rest of the meal was quite good.

We called to come sooner and were told that was fine. A panicky blond hostess tells us the chef is overwhelmed due to a party and we have a 15 minute wait to be seated. I sit, the hubby goes for a ciggy. 10 mins we get seated in an almost empty restaurant. When I commented on this, the hostess says, "Well you only had to wait two minutes, what's the problem?" The calamari were fresh, so greasy that we didn't finish them. Tempura vegetables, same problem. The main courses were winners. My husband's rack of lamb (read three lamb chops) were rare, great glaze, and my sashimi was spectacular. Creme brulee was good. Not sure we'd go back, too much drama and poor quality-price rapport despite a coupon.
