A word from Peony Pavilion
Peony Pavilion, a Japanese and Asian Fusion, BYO restaurant with a lush, exotic, romantic decor and a star-studded culinary team, is the newest addition to Princeton's vibrant dining scene. The unique menu takes its cue from time-honored East Asian cuisines with contemporary approaches using the freshest, finest ingredients to be found including exquisite sushi and sashimi dishes. Peony Pavilion is named after a famous 16th century Chinese opera. The peony, which symbolizes good fortune, peace, prosperity and nobility, is interwoven throughout Peony Pavilion's dramatic interior design.
Major renovations to the former Sunny Garden restaurant create an exotic and romantic atmosphere, Peony Pavilion features several unique dining areas, and a dramatic foyer with a soaring ceiling and dangling, jewel-like red pendant peony motif chandeliers. Comfortable and discreet booths line the main dining room where a large, popular sushi bar commands center stage.

Diner Reviews
  • "We had omakase -- 8-course of appetizers made with mainly raw fish. We brought a bottle of Argentine Malbec. Surprisingly the berry flavor goes very well with the lightly sweet & salty sauce. Yoshi, the sushi chef, is very personable. We enjoyed our dining experience."

  • "My wife and I have been looking for a Japanese / Asian place in the Princeton area, that has not only great food but also a nice and comfortable interior. This is it. The interior is real delight, it is very comfortable and you feel in a different continent. The service was very good. We tested some new meals, new special rolls and it was great. Overall pricing is reasonable. It looks like we found our new favorite restaurant."

  • "Wanted to get some sushi, but wanted to dine out, so decided to try this restaurant since it changed ownership and food focus. The restaurant was welcoming, and the service friendly and respectful. The portions were quite substantial and the presentation was elegant. an Per my request, hey prepared a dish that was not on the menu (chicken tempura roll) and it came out delicious. It was and enjoyable experience and I will return. The owner said business has been quiet, but that evening was surprisingly busy. I hope traffic picks up and they are successful, because they seem to be hardworking and aiming to provide a pleasant dining experience."

  • "The food was terrific. The place is gorgeous. The wine list great- the sushi bar authentic (although a companion tried it-I dont eat sushi) The only reason to dock this a star is the waitress did not speak very good english and we had to correct a couple of her mistakes. Otherwise a real good experience overall."

  • "We were in for an early dinner last Saturday and had an exceptional experience. Decor was wonderful, food was excellent, service was outstanding. We don't live nearby but will happily travel back again, the experience was worth it. Everything we tasted was incredible, however the Kobe special rolls were an especially unique find."

  • "Great dinning experience in Princeton. Although not the easiest place to find due to its location, it should be on your restaurant list when visiting the Princeton area. I highly recommend the Tam Yam Soup and Pad Thai."

  • "Food was good but not exceptional. Service was very good. Large salad portion. Sushi was fine. Good presentation. Did not like the automatically 20% gratuity added to our check for table of 4. 18% would have been more then enough. This is not NYC fine dining."

  • "food is good and service was fast and attentive. The sashimi can be better, but other food was on the level."

  • "Hidden gem (not visible from main road). Food comes out as a true work of art and taste just as good! Service is good although we always need a bigger table for the some of the food offerings ordered (for 2). My third visit and have not been disappointed once."

  • "I don't ordinarily take the time to write a review, but we went to Peony Pavilion Saturday evening and it was fabulous. You know a restaurant is good when it is more or less catered to adults, you enjoy a two hour meal, and your 13 year old son is telling you the next day how excellent it was. Great spacing on seating. They can accomodate groups of 6 and 10 at round tables. Low noise. Great food, better service. I would go there as a couple or as a family. Just go."

  • "We enjoyed smoked duck, back ribs and coconut shrimp for appetizers. The soba noodles with vegetables and lamb were very good. The chicken tempura came last. The chicken was dry, there was an excess of batter that wasn't cooked all the way through, still gummy next to the chicken. That was too bad, because the rest of the meal was quite good."

  • "Beautiful décor and delicious food. You must try it!"

  • "We called to come sooner and were told that was fine. A panicky blond hostess tells us the chef is overwhelmed due to a party and we have a 15 minute wait to be seated. I sit, the hubby goes for a ciggy. 10 mins we get seated in an almost empty restaurant. When I commented on this, the hostess says, "Well you only had to wait two minutes, what's the problem?" The calamari were fresh, so greasy that we didn't finish them. Tempura vegetables, same problem. The main courses were winners. My husband's rack of lamb (read three lamb chops) were rare, great glaze, and my sashimi was spectacular. Creme brulee was good. Not sure we'd go back, too much drama and poor quality-price rapport despite a coupon."

  • "Both the food and service is top drawer , the tuna guacamole was out of this world."

  • "Eggplant tofu appetizer, California roll and avocado peanut roll were very good. The tempura was bland and overly coated as was the coconut shrimp. BYOB always appreciated! This place is perfect for a leisurely dinner and has a lovely, quiet, refined, adult atmosphere so please leave the kids at home if they are going to be restless."

  • "It was our first time there and it's was quite nice. The dinner was delicious and service was just right. Came when we needed it yet didn't hang on us. We will definitely go again."

  • "This is an underated Japenese/Asian-fusion restaurant that deserves to be 'discovered' by more diners, because it lacks for nothing: great food & attentive (but not intrusive) service, in stylish, tasteful surroundings, offering a wide variety of dishes to choose from, & for the most part very reasonably priced. Overall, we'd rate the experience 'A'/excellent; we've had a great meal & time every visit. "

  • "Beautiful setting, fine service, delicious (if expensive) food. However, chipped dishes marred the beauty of the arrangements. Small defect, but not welcome in a restaurant that aims for the stars. "

  • "A couple of million dollars renovation from the previous Sunny Garden created a very tasteful, creative ambiance. The restaurant calls itself "Asian", but Japanese fare dominates with touches of Thai and a few very American ingredients. We focused on sushi. It was very fresh and handled and presented beautifully. It was a quiet Tuesday evening, but even if full it would still be a very relaxing, intimate experience. tables and booths are large and not encroaching on neighbors. Service was very efficient and non-intrusive. BYOB is a plus, but they do have some local wine selections. Next time will try some of the kitchen-produced dishes. Location is just off the beaten path, but well worth the extra couple of turns to find it. Do go."

  • "Average place, don't find it exciting or tasty. Nothing like when this location used to be Sunny Garden."

  • "I lived in this area for many years. Sunny Garden was a favorite, but I was very impressed with the Peony Pavilion! I was there with a multi-generational group of 8. D We tried specials, sushi, Thai items, and basic fried rice and teriyaki. Everyone was more than pleased with their choices, and enjoyed sharing. The only problem noted, was the lighting. Cell phones were used by the middle to older aged in our group, to read the menu! I wish the money spent on covering the windows with lattice, had been used to beautify the lovely lawn outside the window."

  • "We thought Peony Pavilion had decent food but was generally overpriced, particularly for dim sum. No carts for dim sum, just order off of a menu. You get most of the items that you would expect for dim sum but it's not as extensive as other places."

  • "Excellent food presentation. Very attentive and collaborative service. Authentic Japanese flavors. Nice pace for food delivery (again, authentically Japanese)"

  • "Recommend...friendly staff, clean, great food and presentation. Dined with friends on a busy Saturday night. The restaurant has a wonderful quiet soothing atmosphere. I have been to some restaurants with great food but very noisy and hard to have conversation. Highly recommend."

  • "This was our first time at this restaurant. The food was surprisingly good. I say surprisingly since the impression one gets when first entering the dining area is underwhelming. Now, this may have been because the website pictures presented an illusion as to the restaurants size and décor. The reality did not match. We found the ambiance lacking. But, we go to a restaurant for good food and service. The food was terrific but the service could be better. After our first would-be waiter disappeared without ever taking the order, we were assigned another waiter after we inquired as to the whereabouts of the first. The second waiter was very courteous and efficient. We will definitely go back."

  • "Sushi was quite good but the presentation was amazing. Our dish came on a bed of ice, with colored lighting underneath, and a dried flower arrangement above. A sushi garden!"

  • "It is nice to have a restaurant that is not attached to a mall or in a shopping center so that there is no hassle with parking. It is also a plus that Peony Pavilion is not on a busy street so there is not sound of traffic going by to detract from the dining experience. The ambiance is very nice with soft music playing that allows conversation to take place without having to speak over the music. the staff is very attentive and responsive. The food is delicious and the portions are just the right size. I heartily recommend Peony Pavilion to anyone who enjoys Asian cuisine."

  • "Had to wait 20 mins past our reservation to get a table. Water glasses were never refilled. Ambience is really nice, they simply need more help on a Saturday night."

  • "Very impressive entry area . The hostess was very friendly & helpful. Our reservation was honored & we were seated within 5 minutes. The restaurant is a BYOB, but they do have a selection of very nice New Jersey wines. The service at first was a little slow & erratic, but after I brought this to the attention of the maître de, everything went smoothly. The food, from the appetizers to the desserts were excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and will recommend Peony Pavilion to our friends."

  • "Great value for the Box Lunch. We have tried the A B and D. The latter with the tender tasty steak was delicious.Tried sushi lunch box too. Good deal. Food presentation is great and the white china is very nice to have instead of plastic or chipped ones we usually have to eat out of in Chinese restaurants. Tempura Fried Ice Cream was a wonderful delicious treat. The birthday girl enjoyed it. Very clean and elegant atmosphere. Dim lights conducive to conversation and dining. Although others found it too dark. Probably due to their age!!! Will go back to try the dinner menu."

  • "We have had the pleasure of dining here a couple of times since it opened. The food is a cut above any of the other Asian restaurants in the area. The menu selection is original and the food is fresh, flavorful and artfully presented. We enjoyed the unexpected special Valentine's Day menu which had dishes that were visual treats as well as gustatory deights. Each course was perfect and the evening was capped off with a little box of Godiva chocolates. The service was excellent and the staff was friendly and professional. Peony Pavilion is a superb addition to Princeton area dining."

  • "Peony Pavilion sets the standard for other Asian restaurants to follow. From their reception hostess to the setting, ambiance, and service - everything was perfect. The food was fantastic! The presentation of each dish surpassed our expectations, but it was merely a prelude to the flavors and textures of the meal itself. I cannot wait to go back, and am recommending it to all."

  • "A large group of us (10) were there on a busy Saturday night. The place was filled with several large groups and many small groups. Waiters were fast to come serving us. Food came up fast as well. This is very pleasantly surprising. The dishes were nicely presented and tasty. I will say better than other fusion restaurants around Princeton area."

  • "This is an average sushi place which tries to be more. The sushi is as good as the average sushi place in the area but is 25% more costly. The appetizers are nothing special. The decor is best described as pretentious. The restaurant is very noisy because of wood floors and brick walls in the dining room. The best part of the meal was the staff. They were very efficient and friendly."

  • "Seems like the former Sunny Harden finally has a decent descendant in place. Reliably good and creative Chinese and sushi can be had at Peony Pavilion. Limited liquor license means only NJA wines and no cocktails, but no worries. My neighbor from Harbin loves the dim sum on the weekends. We will definitely put this place on our local restaurant stop list!"
