A word from Pentimento Restaurant
Mother nature is a living canvas. Winter is the essence; the pencil sketch. Spring is the creativity as the oils begin to be applied in a mixture of colors. Summer is the painting reaching its maturity ready for exhibit. And Fall is the many years of the painting being displayed as it slowly weathers from the elements until its hidden spirit is once again revealed, the pencil strokes; "a Pentimento".

Inspired by the spirit of Mother nature, culinary artist and owner Dennis Young reflects this progression by creating a series of menus that are in sync with each of the seasons. And like the seasons each menu is merely a layer on the culinary canvas that chef and artist Dennis Young has been painting on for more than half of his life, and if one looks closely you can see through all of those layers and find a covered essence, "a Pentimento".

Will have to go back for another meal to get a firm opinion, but that is what our first visit earned... a second visit. Service and attention were nearly perfect. Bar pour was generous. Requested Pelligrino water but was given something else without comment (not as good, but it was water). House wine was fine. Food selection was varied and menu layout only took a minute to figure out. (Lots of options on how to order. The food itself was... just OK. Not bad, but less than we would expect from this level of establishment.

This is the best place on the north shore! The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgable. We have been coming here for years and have never had a bad meal. The new menu is a great update of the classics and great new additions. Imaginative specials change frequently , wine and drink menu is outstanding. Gene and Dave are always great with recommendations. Very unique Italian beer list, great rotating drafts. Overall a NYC quality restaurant, no negatives. Upscale crowd, low key but lively. Live music, bar is a fun scene, dining room area is a little quieter. This is a can't miss, fortunately I live close but this is a place worth driving to!

I just did a Google search and discovered there's been a new chef since July. This explains everything. I loved the food with the previous chef and while others might like this food and menu better, I'm not one of them. The menu is too complicated and the food not prepared well. The Ravioli main dish came in a small appetizer bowl plus the Raviolis were tiny! My lamb chops, which were well plated, were overcooked. Been here twice since the changeover and not sure I'll be back anytime soon. Too sad....

The quality of this restaurant - food and service - has deteriorated. At best, it is now mediocre. Perhaps they are more interested in being a bar hangout. One pasta was ordered soft - due to post-op surgery - and they decided to bring both orders soft because it was easier for the kitchen!!!

I already went several times and find the staff particularly pays good attention and make sure you feel comfortable, makes recommendation if you ask, refill your glass before you need to. You will feel well treated and the service relatively fast (but you are not rushed). Some of the dishes are quite inventive and the combination will leaves your palate entertained for a dining experience. The shrimp wrapped in bacon on a bed of couscous for example was quite a combination. I had rabbit stew, steak with truffle oil, veal ravioli with mushroom sauce (no, not all in same dinner) and there were all very well prepared.

Roasted cauliflower salad sounded interesting, but was just a bunch of ingredients that did not meld. Also, the main taste was, unpleasantly, vinegar. Grilled Caesar "salad" (whole heads, grilled and served lengthwise) had a nice smoky flavor, but who wants to have to cut up their own salad? Eating it was a battle. Filet mignon special ran out by the 6:30 seating, and the skirt steak substitution was chewy and unpleasant. This restaurant used to have reliably tasty, interesting food. They seem to be making changes and experimenting these days. Now, nearly every menu item has a word that even a foodie needs to have translated (I pity the wait staff). The results make me yearn for the old Pentimento.

I am getting to know stony brook and this restaurant is definitely a neighborhood gem. They seem proud of their "new menu" which consists of courses such as cheese plate, salami plate, priti, pasta and secondi. the pasta was okay - nothing to write home about. The secondi list was limited. We had sliders, which were very good, especially the oyster, and polenta fries so never had room for dessert. the wines by the glass were very good and it's interesting that they have "1/2 glasses." The service was great at first but then the waiter didn't seem to be around when needed. The rest of the staff was attentive. I would go back but it was pricey, especially given all of the courses!

If the Title above is confusing imagine a whole menu in Italian, A new menu turns out to be a disaster as everyone had to ask the server what the menu said. After explaining what half plate and three quarter plates were, frustrated, I asked the server " can I just have a plate of spaghetti and Meatballs and was told that they don't serve that here. We decided to order safe, Calamari was excellent, salad OK, Swordfish steak a little over cooked and just a little bit bigger than a hockey puck, Dessert excellent. overpriced, confusing menu, small portions even on the "full plate" items. want some Spaghetti and Meatballs go to Mario's in Setauket.

This was our second visit and it was even better than the first time. The food is wonderfully flavorful with some unusual combinations in the specials. There are hidden gems all through the menu, the portions are filling, and there are a number of reasonably priced wines that make for good drinking. There is a very happy vibe here. Do not miss the zucchini chips!

We had dinner at Pentimento last weekend. This is our favorite local restaurant and dine here regularly. We were surprised to learn about the new chef and menu, but after trying several dishes we were very impressed! We loved the zucchini chips (great for sharing) and 'vasi' options (small jars filled with different spreads)served with homemade crustini. We also tried some of the pastas, my favorites were the cavetelli with braised pork and the Tortelli di Zucca, filled with butternut squash and served in a butter- sage sauce, both delicious! I was happy to learn the the Pollo al Mattone (chicken under a brick) is still on the menu, this is favorite loved by all.Although Pentimento has a new menu and chef, it still remains our favorite spot!

We have been dining at Pentimento for years and really enjoy how the menu changes with the seasons. We were very excited to try dishes from the new menu, there are so many new inventive choices, especially the Vasi - try all 3, you won't be disappointed. The cheese and salumi selections are fantastic, ample portions and very well presented with delicious homemade giardiniera and crescentine. The pasta was cooked to perfection and full of flavor - the tortelli di zucca is an excellent choice. The new menu concept is perfect for sharing, the more the merrier because then you can sample more of Chef Massimo's amazing creations. The service was very attentive and the wine selections can't be beat. We cannot wait for our next meal at Pentimento.

I haven't been to Pentimento in a long time and was really pleased with the new menu. The food and service were fantastic. I recall limited selections in the past. The menu has more to choose from now. Although I did not get any of the cheese or cured meats, I look forward to trying that in the future. Will definitely go back!

I was disappointed by a total revamping of a great menu. This occurred because of a new chef who brought his culinary ideas to an excellent restaurant. He ruined the cheese platter selections which used to be excellent, and now bland at best. His entrees left me wanting the great entrees that used to be mainstays for this restaurant, but disappeared from the menu. I will try back one more time, but if things don't change back, I don't think I will go back again. My favorite local restaurant is gone. Adding new specials from this chef to see what clientele might enjoy is one thing, but to take away our favorites was just plain wrong

I have been going to Pentimento for years . It has always been one of our favorites. However on Friday Oct.10 I went with my sister and a friend. We experienced the "new " menu. We were VERY disappointed. The pasta was over cooked (which is really not acceptable for an Italian restaurant.) The amount of wine poured was ridiculous. It was barely 1/4 of the glass. And the food selections were not particularly appetizing. . Then the coffee came. It was stale and not drinkable!! I was actually embarrassed that I suggested this restaurant. The food selections were much more appealing with the "old" menu. The new menu was not advertised and I felt tricked. I will NOT be going to Pentimento again!! What a shame.

Dined here for Sunday dinner in a party of four. Fantastic menu selection and wine list. The food was both authentic and excellent, but the service here really stole the show! Our waiter provided better service than I've received in many Michelin-starred restaurants. He was that good! Pentimento Restaurant is truly a neighborhood gem in bucolic Stony Brook.

I made a reservation to come here with my boyfriend and I am very specific when it comes to my seating, if there is an issue places usually call me and we make other arrangements when we got there they said the room I requested was closed for a private event so our only option was outside and we can go outside as look and pick a table we would like, I don't particularly care for outdoor seating but found a table we liked and the hostess was not happy with our selection but eventually let us sit and the waiter was nice but a little slow and not very formal for this type of restruant, we are a young couple and I was surprised at the service, I would expect a little more attentive. But EXCELLENT beet/potato tortellini!!

Friends have told me this restaurant was great and I have lived close by for 4 years so figured it was time to check it out. Great location, near the Stony Brook Musuem and Grist Mill. In a quaint cluster of shops. Food was great. Our waiter Mat was excellent. He brought out a cheesecake with a candle for my friend who was celebrating his 90th birthday and the staff wished him happy birthday as we left. I will go back to this deliteful restaurant. Our waiter recommended 3 appetizers which we shared and they were delicious. We had the meatballs, the artichokes and shrimp. Each one better than the other. I had a burger because I heard they were the best and I noted there was kobe beef in them. Delicious.
