A word from Pentimento Restaurant
Mother nature is a living canvas. Winter is the essence; the pencil sketch. Spring is the creativity as the oils begin to be applied in a mixture of colors. Summer is the painting reaching its maturity ready for exhibit. And Fall is the many years of the painting being displayed as it slowly
weathers from the elements until its hidden spirit is once again revealed, the pencil strokes; "a Pentimento".
Inspired by the spirit of Mother nature, culinary artist and owner Dennis Young reflects this progression by creating a series of menus that are in sync with each of the seasons. And like the seasons each menu is merely a layer on the culinary canvas that chef and artist Dennis Young has been painting on for more than half of his life, and if one looks closely you can see through all of those layers and find a covered essence, "a Pentimento".

Met a friend for lunch this
week..I usually have dinner here,,lunch had great variety..nice wines..fantastic humus,,and fresh sandwiches..good prices too. Was a quiet time 3pm lunch..but still had a wonderful time..great for friends to catch up..highly recommended..have been coming here for decades.but never lunch..glad I did."

We dined at Pentimento last Friday
night with a group of friends...this turned out to be an excellent choice! We sat in the lounge area where there was a lively bar scene.Our server was very professional and knowledgeable about their specialty cocktails and extensive wine list. I ordered the oysters on special that night which were amazing! There were also several small plates to choose from...all excellent. The homemade pasta dishes were also delicious. I had the Pentimento burger and thoroughly enjoyed it! We were lucky enough to be there on a night with live music, the band was fantastic, too! Can't wait to go back!"

It's my second time dining there
and I must say it's still as good as the first time. Service is kept steady, other servers working in your area will check up on you as well to make sure everything is alright and you don't need anything. It's a great place that you could just go got appetizers and desert. Or if you want a three courser. I will definitely keep attending this restaurant. Delicious food and the location is in a great place!"

Food was good, but nothing
special. Prices are too high for the quality of food. They overcharge for drinks, which is a total turn off. $11.00 for a mixed drink. That's out of line with the surrounding areas average price of $8.50. For a $129 bill we can easily go elsewhere in the area and get better food and service. Service wasn't specular either, just average, seems waitress just wanted to get it done and go home. It was our second time there, but our last."

Upside The food was a all time
fav. had the baked ricotta for app reminded me of a savory cheesecake delicious! And I got the brick cooked half chicken for dinner without a problem they added the scallion potatoes to my dish as requested from the entire dish was unique n bold flavors by far probably the best chicken veggie potato dish I've ever had ever u just have to try it. The downside was The mixed drink menu wasn't that great hard to understand. And if u want enough butter for ur bread ask for more as soon as they put it down for my liking it was not enough. But a great non alcoholic section. On our tues night it was a older crowd If ur considering it for a bar atmosphere. Overall a great experience im craving it already! Def try it!"

Pentimento expanded and lost the
appeal and ambiance of the old neighborhood gem. It now looks like any new restaurant except for the original room which remains the same. The food is still quite good. Wine list is vast and almost all Italian-mostly pricey bottles. The tagiatelle with shrimp are delicious and taste homemade, steak was average; clam appetizer was tasty. Disappointed in appearance and will not return."

This is one of those restaurants
that never goes wrong. My wife and I have dined here on four or five occasions (brought other couples twice) and have yet to be disappointed. The wait staff are smart, friendly, know their product, and clearly know when and when not to approach the table. This IS my go-to restaurant."

My wife and I wanted to celebrate
valentines day with a nice meal. We had been to the restaurant a few months earlier and we're please to find such original and delicious cuisine. Unfortunately, for a special occasion, the foo was so so. It takes some guts to charge $26 for frozen lobster ravioli in a plain red sauce. The special lamb chops were no better than the ones I make at home. The service was a little slow, and it was a little difficult to get the waiters attention. We would probably try it again, but order from the regular menu."

This restaurant just keeps getting
better and better!!!! Honestly, everything was fabulous!!! We were a party of six on this past snow storm,the night before valentines day. Appetizers were chicken soup, burrata, artichoke hearts and calamari, nothing left! I had the swordfish over broccoli rabe, so delicious! My daughters and son in law had the salmon, my husband had pasta and my other son had the rib eye steak, all finished and all So good!!!! Dessert was gelato, again delicious!!! Looking forward to going back very soon, thank you for a wonderful evening!"

Pleasant setting in Stony Brook
Village, near water and shops, and very tasty food, reasonably priced. Excellent first course salad, enough lamb roast for three adults and a fine dessert. Good for many reasons, and a reminder that life flourishes beyond the Queens-Nassau border."

I dined at Pentimento in Stony
Brook last Friday night with some friends. Upon arrival, the bar was still hopping from happy hour. After a cocktail...we were seated at a table in the upper bar area were we had an excellent server (Ann Marie) and still felt the energy from the bar crowd. My husband and I had the crab cake for an appetizer ( a special that evening) and our friends enjoyed the jumbo prawn. Both were outstanding! The homemade tagliatelle with shrimp was also delicious! We enjoyed after dinner cocktails made by their master 'mixologists'....I especially liked the Arthur Ave...their version of a Bronx cocktail. If you want to dine on the weekend, I recommend a reservation...this place is very popular."

From the moment we stepped through
the door, we felt welcome. Our host seated us immediately and engaged in friendly conversation as if we were old friends. Our waitress followed soon after and had the same cheery manner. She took the time to tell us about the menu and was very professional. The menu was quite a mixed bag with selections for every palate. My husband had the Cod selection and was very happy ( he is a fisherman and insists on fresh fish). I had my favorite which is Duck, it was done to perfection, very tasty. We had a calamari appetizer, yummy and crisp. I had a lovely red wine with dinner that coated the glass. We had the Ricotta cheese cake with pear and cranberry compote. All around fabulous meal right down to the finish."

The food sounded good, but was a
let down on flavor, taste and quality. Service was good. bread was rationed (1 slice per person so there were 2 slices in a bread basket brought to the table) although they were happy to provide refills, but frankly it was not that good. I would not recommend this place, or come back. In fairness, our standards for restaurants is generally higher and we prefer organic food, so when we "cheat" we hope to get really good food that's worth it, and this place was not that."

The is a good local favorite and
has expanded the restaurant and increased the size of the bar area. The bar area is now separated from the restaurant which makes it much more comfortable. The food is well prepared but the menu needs to be expanded. The wait staff is usually exceptional and make the restaurant even more appealing."

The only complaint I have about
this restaurant is the tables that aren't in the main dining room, they are way too small!!!! Our dinner was delicious!!! We started with the marinated artichokes and potato leek soup, fabulous!!!! My husband had the salmon and I had monkfish medallions that was on the specials, OMG so so good! We had chocolate cake for dessert that melted in your mouth. Next time I will request a table in the main dining room. They also had music that was very nice!"

We have been to Pentimento before
but this experience was awful! Our waiter was so condescending and seemed so rushed...we wanted to just order apps first and wine and just talk for a bit and relax....he kept coming back and saying the kitchen would be backed up and we must order dinner.......says who? We are the patrons he is the server....Then after that you couldn't find him.....then a lovely young lady named Erin came over and took over the mess he had created! Will go back....but if we get that waiter we are asking for a change......he was very rude!"

We continue to be in awe of the
inspired seasonal menus that Chef Dennis Young continually invents at his 20-year-old restaurant, Pentimento. This perennially excellent eatery in Stony Brook Village is a gastronomic delight, with a vast array of tapas-like openers that can easily be shared or put together as a multi-dish entree. Dining here often reminds us of some of our favorite ristoranti in Milan like La Briciola, Giacomo and Bice. A standout last evening was the Tagliatelle with Shrimp, Speck and Fava Beans in a Tomato-Butter Sauce. The pasta was housemade, of course, and the marriage of flavors nothing short of wondrous. Now if only Chef Young would consent to a satellite eatery on the North Fork."

The food and service were
excellent, the offerings creative, pleasantly surprising, but priced accordingly high. Expect about $50 per person for dinner. It does have outdoor dining in warmer weather. It is surrounded by upscale shops, and very near the Stony Brook Grist Mill and what used to be called the Museums at Stony Brook. So, it is well located. The restaurant has also been recently expanded, to a less effect."

When we weren't called, I called
to confirm our reservation, only to hear that we were not in the book and they were completely booked. Mistake. Ok, that can happen. We ordered a bottle of chardonnay for the table, and when we went to order a second, we were told that was the last bottle. Our reservation was for 7:00 and they were already out of one of the specials, osso bucco. The food was good, not memorable. The last straw was the 20% that was automatically tacked onto to the bill AFTER taxes. We had out-of-town guests to whom I had promised a stellar meal; it was not to be."

I went to Pentimento's on
Halloween night and was surprised how packed it was, but that evening the food and atmosphere was spectacular . However, last Saturday night I thought I'd take my husband there for his birthday and put a note in the registration and actually told the manager we were there for his birthday. The food was very mediocre, I had salmon and he had duck, and there was no mention of his birthday at all. Can't say I'll be running back."

Great place for a very, very good
meal. Nice ambiance and service is excellent. Creative and well-executed dishes. As simple as it sounds, their lobster hash browns are pretty insane. Wine list needs some work, but its not bad. Didn't try the drinks, but they're creative too. Their patrons are more old-school, which works well for a nice meal. I want to eat smartly prepared food, in a nice surrounding, with good service, and without knucklehead table-neighbors ... Pentimento's always delivers."

service, however, when my husband found a piece of metal in his food, the management had good detective work to establish where it originated it from (a metal scouring sponge) & they offered to get him another entrée, but the rest of our party were almost finished with our meal. They did not offer to comp our bottle of wine or dessert. My husband left hungary!!"

All I can say is how memorable our
experience was. From the moment we walked in to the moment we left we were treated to excellent service. The food was excellent and so was the service. There is nothing negative I can say about the experience. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a nice romantic spot to have a meal and enjoy a good conversation. The whole staff was dressed up for Halloween but it didn't take away from the experience if anything it added to it."
