A word from Pentimento Restaurant
Mother nature is a living canvas. Winter is the essence; the pencil sketch. Spring is the creativity as the oils begin to be applied in a mixture of colors. Summer is the painting reaching its maturity ready for exhibit. And Fall is the many years of the painting being displayed as it slowly
weathers from the elements until its hidden spirit is once again revealed, the pencil strokes; "a Pentimento".
Inspired by the spirit of Mother nature, culinary artist and owner Dennis Young reflects this progression by creating a series of menus that are in sync with each of the seasons. And like the seasons each menu is merely a layer on the culinary canvas that chef and artist Dennis Young has been painting on for more than half of his life, and if one looks closely you can see through all of those layers and find a covered essence, "a Pentimento".

Friends have told me this
restaurant was great and I have lived close by for 4 years so figured it was time to check it out. Great location, near the Stony Brook Musuem and Grist Mill. In a quaint cluster of shops. Food was great. Our waiter Mat was excellent. He brought out a cheesecake with a candle for my friend who was celebrating his 90th birthday and the staff wished him happy birthday as we left. I will go back to this deliteful restaurant. Our waiter recommended 3 appetizers which we shared and they were delicious. We had the meatballs, the artichokes and shrimp. Each one better than the other. I had a burger because I heard they were the best and I noted there was kobe beef in them. Delicious."

We gathered for our adult son's
birthday. We enjoyed a warm reception and friendly service. The server was very accommodating in checking ingredients for a diner who has a gluten allergy. The food was outstanding from the carpaccio to the rabbit special and ending with some delicious chocolate pudding (which had a fancier name). We will be sure to return!"

We have been coming here for
decades..and unlike most places that have been around for some time,,Pentimentao knows how to remain fresh,,vibrant with just enough new things to stay interesting,,and just enough old standards to appeal to a sense of continuing wonder fullness.."

Bring a jacket it was freezing
inside! Also, it would help a lot if you like jazz (I don't and honestly don't know anyone that does) because the they are playing it at an uncomfortablely loud level. I know I sound like an old man but trust me I am not."

Dined here in the past, and then
rediscovered the restaurant recently…many special changes in decor, menu and ambiance have made Pentimento my new local favorite."
Dined on 7/6/2014
Warm ambiance,very good food, and
excellent service.We,ll definitely return"
Dined on 6/29/2014
Food choices are special…love the
fact that I can have a cheese/salami appetizer with my wine. I highly recommend the experience."
Dined on 6/21/2014
We were three at dinner the day
after Father's day. We tried 5 different appetizers and they were all quite good. I particularly liked the clams and the shrimp both having a light savory sauce perfect for dipping the bread. After so many appetizers I decided on the half portion of squid ink linguini with shrimp. The pasta was al dente and the shrimp were tender without being mushy. Another dinner choice was the pork chop special and yet another was the ahi tuna. Both were enjoyed. The only complaint I have is that we really did want to enjoy each course without being rushed to order the next and our waiter though not pushy did keep coming over to get our main order. Other than that the service was professional."

Food is always good, great
friendly service. Very accommodating staff. Dining room needs WORK. Very bland not inviting. Bar area the best. 1st level very cozy, tables not too close. Had a nice evening this past Saturday 6/14"

Went with small plates, food was
excellent. Try the duck liver pâté, the savor is incredible."
Dined on 6/12/2014
and you have to try the drinks,
they go crazy over making them perfect"

Excellent food, and great
ambience. We can't wait to go back! I selected "kid friendly" because it was on the Wednesday night that we dined there. However, I would be a bit reluctant to bring our 5 year old son on a Saturday night. "
Dined on 6/4/2014
we have been going there for
years. have never been disappointed. it is one of the few restaurants that when they enlarged..... it became better. most of the time if they enlarge..... it is not as good. enjoy!"
Dined on 5/31/2014
It's always good here and the
staff accommodating. The seasonal menu options it interesting. "
Dined on 5/23/2014
This restaurant keeps their menu
interesting. The staff is friendly. The bar could be a little crowded and loud so if you want a quiet dinner sit in the room that is further away from the bar. My friend thought the menu was overpriced with entrees in the 25 - 30 dollar range but I think that is normal for that type of restaurant in this area. "
Dined on 5/16/2014
A bit noisy as their bar is packed
all afternoon and evening. The pasta dishes are very good with a great Marinara Sauce. The eggplant Appetizer was excellent. Unfortunately, the bread was stale and uninviting. This was our first visit, and as with any restaurant, you need to learn their strengths. I'm sure that there are great choices to be had once you know what to order. However, wonderful bread is an essential part of a good meal, and that was severely lacking."
Dined on 5/16/2014
Rare gem to find both of these
components in a restaurant while keeping costs reasonable as well."
Dined on 5/12/2014
Lovely Mothers day late lunch with
my daughter. Excellent cocktail, shared a grouping of appetizers and were very satisfied."

You'll find Restaurant Pentimento
... indoor and outdoor dining, great bar area and great food."
Dined on 5/11/2014
We've eaten here a few times.
Pentimento is a nice place in a nice neighborhood. Normally, the people who eat here are well dressed and well mannered, and the staff/management do a nice job. Its always good. We don't sit at the bar, but I could see that happening in the near future, for happy hour or just for a drink or two. Food is always well prepared and enjoyable... one of those "go-to" places that just doesn't disappoint, which REALLY is important... you know what you'll get. Several interesting combinations can be found; I had the corn chowder app (a small is plenty), but the lobster hash browns are worth the trip. Wife had the red snapper; good stuff."

Pentimento has become one of my
favorite restaurants!!!! I love how the menu changes, always something new to try. This time they had fettuccine with fresh tuna, which was delicious! We started with grilled artichoke, yummy! We also had the burrata which was so rich and creamy, we passed on dessert because we had no room!!!"
Dined on 5/3/2014
We enjoy Pentimento very much and
were very happy to celebrate a lovely anniversary meal there. It is a gorgeous restaurant, the food is delicious and the service is friendly & low-key. We feel fortunate that it is so close to our home!"
Dined on 4/26/2014
I indulged in three courses: an
appetizer of bresaeola with artichokes, which was excellent; an arugula salad which was fresh, but the strawberries were overwhelmed by a pile of cheese (asiago?); the rack of veal with braised greens was lovely, but the large pile of mashed potatoes an unnecessary and distracting addition, and very un-Italian. Service was prompt but not helpful with advice. "

Met a friend for lunch this
week..I usually have dinner here,,lunch had great variety..nice wines..fantastic humus,,and fresh sandwiches..good prices too. Was a quiet time 3pm lunch..but still had a wonderful time..great for friends to catch up..highly recommended..have been coming here for decades.but never lunch..glad I did."

Excellent Food. 1/2 size pasta
dishes were perfect."

We dined at Pentimento last Friday
night with a group of friends...this turned out to be an excellent choice! We sat in the lounge area where there was a lively bar scene. Our server was very professional and knowledgeable about their specialty cocktails and extensive wine list. I ordered the oysters on special that night which were amazing! There were also several small plates to choose from...all excellent. The homemade pasta dishes were also delicious. I had the Pentimento burger and thoroughly enjoyed it! We were lucky enough to be there on a night with live music, the band was fantastic, too! Can't wait to go back!"
Dined on 3/28/2014
Food very good as was the service
and just really an enjoyable place. Thanks."
Dined on 3/21/2014
The food was awesome! The ambience
was great! The best part of the evening was the way, our hostess, AnnMarie went out of her way to make sure that we had the best experience possible. This place is a gem."
Dined on 3/12/2014
It's my second time dining there
and I must say it's still as good as the first time. Service is kept steady, other servers working in your area will check up on you as well to make sure everything is alright and you don't need anything. It's a great place that you could just go got appetizers and desert. Or if you want a three courser. I will definitely keep attending this restaurant. Delicious food and the location is in a great place!"
Dined on 3/9/2014
Food was good, but nothing
special. Prices are too high for the quality of food. They overcharge for drinks, which is a total turn off. $11.00 for a mixed drink. That's out of line with the surrounding areas average price of $8.50. For a $129 bill we can easily go elsewhere in the area and get better food and service. Service wasn't specular either, just average, seems waitress just wanted to get it done and go home. It was our second time there, but our last."

Upside The food was a all time
fav. had the baked ricotta for app reminded me of a savory cheesecake delicious! And I got the brick cooked half chicken for dinner without a problem they added the scallion potatoes to my dish as requested from the entire dish was unique n bold flavors by far probably the best chicken veggie potato dish I've ever had ever u just have to try it. The downside was The mixed drink menu wasn't that great hard to understand. And if u want enough butter for ur bread ask for more as soon as they put it down for my liking it was not enough. But a great non alcoholic section. On our tues night it was a older crowd If ur considering it for a bar atmosphere. Overall a great experience im craving it already! Def try it!"
Dined on 2/25/2014
Food was nothing great. Extremely
overpriced. Did not appreciate the dining room setup; sit in the bar if you still decide to go."
Dined on 2/24/2014
Pentimento expanded and lost the
appeal and ambiance of the old neighborhood gem. It now looks like any new restaurant except for the original room which remains the same. The food is still quite good. Wine list is vast and almost all Italian-mostly pricey bottles. The tagiatelle with shrimp are delicious and taste homemade, steak was average; clam appetizer was tasty. Disappointed in appearance and will not return."
Dined on 2/22/2014
This is one of those restaurants
that never goes wrong. My wife and I have dined here on four or five occasions (brought other couples twice) and have yet to be disappointed. The wait staff are smart, friendly, know their product, and clearly know when and when not to approach the table. This IS my go-to restaurant."
Dined on 2/15/2014
My wife and I wanted to celebrate
valentines day with a nice meal. We had been to the restaurant a few months earlier and we're please to find such original and delicious cuisine. Unfortunately, for a special occasion, the foo was so so. It takes some guts to charge $26 for frozen lobster ravioli in a plain red sauce. The special lamb chops were no better than the ones I make at home. The service was a little slow, and it was a little difficult to get the waiters attention. We would probably try it again, but order from the regular menu."
Dined on 2/14/2014
This restaurant just keeps getting
better and better!!!! Honestly, everything was fabulous!!! We were a party of six on this past snow storm, the night before valentines day. Appetizers were chicken soup, burrata, artichoke hearts and calamari, nothing left! I had the swordfish over broccoli rabe, so delicious! My daughters and son in law had the salmon, my husband had pasta and my other son had the rib eye steak, all finished and all So good!!!! Dessert was gelato, again delicious!!! Looking forward to going back very soon, thank you for a wonderful evening!"

Very nice, local, romantic, food
is very good and service comes with a smile."

Pleasant setting in Stony Brook
Village, near water and shops, and very tasty food, reasonably priced. Excellent first course salad, enough lamb roast for three adults and a fine dessert. Good for many reasons, and a reminder that life flourishes beyond the Queens-Nassau border."
Dined on 2/11/2014
Have been to Pentimento several
times and this past evening was the Best ever! Food was excellent and server Danny was great!"
Dined on 2/8/2014
We count on Pentimento to be
special, and again it was. Eggplant Rolatini and Chickpea Crepes for appetizers, wonderful. Salmon and Rib Eye for dinner, delicious. And desserts are always the perfect end."
