Diner Reviews
  • "This is one of our Best Dinning Experiences we've had. As a tourist we look forward to trying new places. The Penny Farthing Pub is tops on our list. The decor looks so original. The food is awesome. The service is very professional & friendly."

  • "Have eaten there many times on Monday for halibut. This time had to send the 2 pieces back because they were so small compared to all other times. When order returned I am sure it was cod not halibut. Did not return it because the 3 people (who had proper-sized halibut orders) were all finished and did not want delay departure even later."

  • "We reserved with Open Table and, after being seated, received an e-mail that Penny Farthing had cancelled the reservation. The server didn't have any idea about how Open Table worked. The manager said, "That's how the system works." I've been an Open Table member for years so told her that's definitely not how the system works. We resolved it by my making another reservation and them checking me in properly (instead of hitting "cancel"!). We received our drinks promptly but waited another 30 minutes before our food order was taken. The food was OK. Burgers fell apart and were difficult to eat. This is an authentic English pub and could be so much more in a neighbourhood that values having a "local" but demands excellent food and service."

  • "Sooke Garden Club enjoyed our experience immensely. No one had a complaint. Friendly, energetic staff. Wonderful food. Had to ask for coffee and water refills. "

  • "Good beer list with rotating drafts. Lots of factory beer, but enough micros to keep a regular happy. Bar food is adequate. Staff and service is top notch."

  • ""We love the cozy feel of this place. We definitely would return to try more dishes. The turkey club wrap was amazing and the daily soup special delicious. Vegetable salad with steak add on very delicious and satisfying Service was well-timed and friendly. A great time was had by all."

  • "As one of only 2 Pubs in Oak Bay the Penny Farthing gets it's fair share of customers just because they are the closest thing to home. I have been many times and had wonderful meals (one of the best Lamb plates ever) and average Pub fare other times. The servers are young and often forgetful depending on when you go and who you get. In general the busier they are the worse the service becomes. With the prices being what they are (over$8 for an imported Pint!) and a menu that isn't cheap, I guess I expect things to be a little bit more consistent. My best experience has been going in for an early Dinner and sticking with the specials which are different every day. If you drink locally brewed beer the prices are much more reasonable as well."

  • "Great neighborhood pub, casual, relaxed atmosphere. Here for the Shepards Pie special this day, well prepared, tasty, little light on the fixins beyond the potato topping. Nice list of local and import beers to complement your meal. Great service, friendly. Worth another visit next time in the area."

  • "Great atmosphere and service, but a weak menu for women, who generally prefer lighter fare."

  • "I ordered "Fish and Chips" and was very disappointed. the fish were 2 very small pieces and the batter very gouey all flour. basically the worst "fish N chips" ever."

  • "We were looking for a relaxed environment where our team could meet. Penny Farthing "fit the bill" perfectly. The menu was varied, the prices reasonable, the mood festive, the service friendly and each item of food was delicious and very well prepared. Thanks for a great evening experience."

  • "This restaurant has excellent pub fare, with a different two for one special every day. The service is fast and friendly. The Penny farthing is one if the nicest places to have lunch in Oak Bay."

  • "The Penny Farthing was a great place for my husbands birthday. We were a small group. Their was live music - not too noisy. there was a great bar menu. Great authentic ambiance - old English pub...the menu reflected it as well."

  • "We were meeting friends who had appointments to follow and were thus favourably impressed with the service and food. Our server Brittany, was both pleasant, polite and efficient. A very nice young lady who contributed to our overall very positive impression of your establishment. Serving of wine could use a touch of experience. We look forward to our next visit. Thank you."

  • "We discovered Penny Farthing Pub just by chance when we moved here many years ago and we have been dining/lunching there often ever since. The food has been consistently good and affordable. Found the service always pleasant."

  • "The food was average. The kitchen was extremely slow even at 8 pm in a nearly empty restaurant."
    Dined on 9/14/2013
  • "The meat is very fatty comprising almost 1/3 of the portion. The gravy and the yorkshire pudding were tasty but the the rest of the dinner is unremarkable and disappointing and somewhat cold. The service is indifferent; friendly waitress but we had to ask for several things(horseradish, water) which did not occur to her to offer. The place has some charm but overall it was disappointing."

  • "We were three ladies and had a beautiful, friendly server (Laura 22) who was very helpful identifying gluten-free menu items for one of my guests. They thoroughly enjoyed their lunch and we had a great time. However, I ordered the mac and cheese and it was very, very dry so I took it home half eaten and added melted cheese and it was delicious. I think there were just too many crumbs on it. Otherwise, the beer was wonderfully ice cold and the server kept coming back to see if everything was ok."

  • "The Penny Farthing pub is one of our favorites. It's more of an up-scale pub with great food and a great line up of draught beers. The atmosphere is great. It's a super place to meet up with friends for a drink and good food."

  • "Very casual atmosphere, mostly older people but energetic, beer was fantastic!"

  • "We went to the Pennyfarthing for a casual dinner before heaing to the local theatre. We gave ourselves plenty of time because we had to drive to the theatre afterwards. I have been to the pub several times before, but this was the quietest it had been. Our experience there was pleasant. The food came in a reasonable amount of time, which left us plenty of time to enjoy it before we had to head out. My dinner companions tried the deep fried pickles (which sound horrible to me) and they loved them. Everyone enjoyed their dinner and said that they would have it again. Our dinner at the Pennyfarthing started our evening off in good style. That and a good play made for a wonderful evening."

  • "We always enjoy eating at the PF Pub but we don't go if we want a more notable food experience. It's close to home and reliable. Their Sunday roast is always great, although the price has recently gone up a lot and a course was taken away! Two of us had the shepherd pie which was delicious but a little on the dry side. Great pub atmosphere."

  • "Abysmal service. Really, really abysmal service. I would never give this company my business ever again. Lesson learned. And that $6.95 Race Rocks is only $4.50 at my local pub."

  • "We had the booth we had reservered, the service was quick and efficiant. The Fish and chips orders arrived timely. The fish not as good as usual , not sure... maybe the batter was too heavy?? Thanks,"

  • "My first time at Penny Farthing Pub. Surprisingly good food, orders were deliverd promptly, beer was pleasantly cool, not teeth-freezing as at most other establishments."

  • "our interest in the penny is due to their commitment to good music. the reno's since we were last there are great for us music lovers. the food is also of high standard and the prices will allow us to continue to return. our enjoyment was such that we will return very soon now and will again request seating by the band. the staff are also of high quality, making us feel very welcome and giving good service. a pleasure! thank-you penny!"

  • "In spite of a reservation for the post lunch hour rush, as a group of six we were seated at a table too small to comfortably accommodate our group. The mood of the group was very jovial so it made being cramped bearable. The server was very personable and professional, however the food was only "so so" that day. I can't say I would instantly recommend but would return to try again."

  • "Now this is a pub! Great atmosphere, you'd think you were in England. We came to visit some friends and we had nice spot near a fireplace. Everyone enjoyed the fish and chips and moules frites, in fact the best mussels I've had in a long time. Thanks!"

  • "We were only in Victoria for a few hours so I did some online research before we got there. This place came highly recommended as an authentic pub so we gave it a try. I'm so glad we did. It is off the beaten path so it's more of a local spot than all of the other places that came up on the search, which I really liked. Food was great british style pub food. The waitress was very friendly and attentive. The place was pretty crowded but that only added to the great atmosphere. It was a great stop!"
