Diner Reviews
  • "This place was amazing. Great menu, great wine list, fantastic service and atmosphere. No Complaints except they're really busy and you'll need a reservation in advance!"

  • "I loved this place for the ambience, the romance, the service, setting and food. We waited briefly for an outdoor table and it was exactly what I'd hoped for. I wanted an outdoor courtyard experience and that's just what this was. The service was excellent. I had the duck, with a glass of Chardonnay. The duck was perfect, tender, not fatty and delicious. I would have given it 5 stars but my husband is extremely picky with how his steak is cooked. He ordered the strip very well done, no pink and had to send it back because it came medium well. They rectified the situation immediately and he thoroughly enjoyed the meal. I highly recommend dining here especially for a celebration or special occasion."

  • "Took my Mother here to celebrate her birthday. They treated her like a queen. She enjoyed herself very much."

  • "Very rich food, fancy versions of southern comfort. Excellent service. Very nice restaurant, but not stuffy at all."

  • "My husband and I ate here after we were married on Folly Beach. We had a 6:30 reservation, which we called and stated we would be 10 minutes late for due to traffic. We walked in and were seated almost immediately, despite being a little bit late. The food and service were excellent, but the noise level was distracting. The dining room was fairly small, and the more people that came in the worse it got. It made it hard to have a conversation. Our server was very attentive, and all of the staff was clearly well-trained, organized, and very sharply turned out. Overall, we very much enjoyed our food (including the famous coconut cake,) but wished that the noise and ambience were better."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 27th anniversary, and I chose Peninsula Grill because of our past 3 experiences there. It did not disappoint. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful. He had been on the staff 'only' two years, which he told us was a short period of time compared to others. Oysters on the half shell were delicate, with chilled salt water, and tangy horseradish sauce. My wife had the Kurios Farm Bibb Salad, which was flavorful. I had the Chef’s Seasonal Salad. It was tasty, but I was not expecting a cylinder of vegetables that appeared to be food processed. My wife had the trout special. It was light and flavorful. I got the filet mignon. Cooked perfectly, and very tender and flavorful. Coconut cake was outstanding."

  • "My husband and I had a lovely dining experience at The Peninsula Grill while visiting Charleston. I had heard so much about this restaurant and it met my expectations completely. The atmosphere was vibrant; the food delicious; the staff attentive and helpful but not overbearing. Of note I am celiac and the restaurant ensured that my fish entree was adjusted accordingly. The sommelier was helpful and informed. All in all a very delightful dining experience."

  • "Had the duck which wasn't the best I've ever had - would have been better with a berry glaze. Also, the salad served with it was useless - mostly sprouts no substance to it. I know you can do better."

  • "Yep, Oh Baby is an accurate impression of amazing food combined with exceptional service. Neat intimate bar stop pre meal also recommended. Best restaurant experience we had in Charleston or Savannah. Put it #1 on your list and make a reservation well in advance."

  • "We had reservations for 7:30. We were seated late, but that was OK. The problem was that dinner took almost 3 hours. The food was great, but the overall service was slow."
    Dined on 4/1/2014
  • "Great food and service. Ambience was average and noise level was very high. Hard to hear person across the table from you. I'd go again anytime. Crowd was mostly mature folks. Not many very young people."

  • "If you are looking for a special place in Charleston to celebrate an event or occasion, this is a perfect place for that. Great food, wonderful ambiance, and incredible service."

  • "Peninsula Grill was by far the best dining experience we had while in Charleston. The food was delicious, the environment was wonderful and the service was outstanding. As advertised the coconut cake was to die for..."

  • "Everything was perfect. The cocktails were just right, the appetizers were impeccable, Danielle (our server) was so sweet and knowledgable and helpful and overall fantastic. I told them via OpenTable that it was my mum's birthday and everyone that worked with us made sure to wish her a special day."

  • "Great food, really good service, inside the restaurant was a little bit noisy making intimate conversation difficult - but not a deal breaker! Had the Berkshire Pork Chop, more than enough for two and the coconut cake was the best I have ever had!"

  • "All or the food was so amazing that we had the chef come out so we could give our compliments!"

  • "We had a lovely dinner here. The service was excellent, courtyard just divine on that fresh spring evening and the food was delicious. The pairing was unique and well complemented. Lobster trio was something quite different and each piece uniquely flavored. The rosemary lamb was superb. You'd think: well, rosemary and lamb are pretty standard, but this lamb juice was infused with rosemary."

  • "We had dinner with some relatives. Everything was superb. The Oysters Casino and Foie gras appetizers were perfect. I loved the salmon with horse radish sauce. My companions had steak au poivre which was also well prepared. The only downside was we were too full for desert. This is a superb restaurant for special occasions."

  • "We live in the Lowcountry and have visited many restaurants in Charleston, but this is by far the best we have experienced. The atmosphere was old world charming, not the cookie cutter Southern style but not stuffy, simply warm and welcoming. The service was wonderful. attentive but not intrusive. Again, you felt welcomed. Finally, the food was perfect. Each entree won raves from the diners. We even had a diner try rare duck breast for the first time and became a believer. In short, it was a great dining experience."

  • "The Peninsula Grill delivers the same degree of excellence as the Planters Inn next door and that is saying something! My starter was a tasty salad of heirloom tomatoes with goat cheese and Pecorino Romano. My husband Mike chose a trio of soups: mushroom bisque, crab & corn chowder and pumpkin and squash soup. He liked all of them but his favorite was the crab and corn chowder. We both chose the pork chop which came with fingerling potatoes and collard greens. A tour de force! Sally we were too full to even split a dessert. This a truly amazing experience and one which we intend to repeat on our next visit to the charming city of Charleston, SC."

  • "What a great restaurant. Our night began in the bar with great wine and cocktails. The trio of soups was outstanding. Hard to choose our favorite. We shared a entree of duck breast that was some of the best we ever had. The duck was tender and cooked to perfection Will always have a meal here whenever in Charlestons"

  • "The food was excellent. The service was superb. Our server noticed my wife's reaction to her coffee (which was cool) , check in the kitchen , realized the problem and brought a fresh hot cup without a word from us."
    Dined on 3/30/2014
  • "The food was prepared to perfection. The service was attentive but the noise level was a little much but that was probably due to the very loud and booming voice of a man at the next table. Once he left, the room went down several decibels. The coconut cake lived up to its reputation. Very nice evening. Would go back and enjoy another meal there."

  • "The fish special was delicious and the chef was very accommodating for a dairy free entree. Very much appreciated. Our waiter was fantastic. Staff worked like a well oiled machine, very attentive and helpful."

  • "The Peninsula Grill was an excellent choice for a special occasion dinner for my wife and I. A classy, elegant, but not stuffy, atmosphere. The food and service were excellent. The beautiful garden entrance and warm atmosphere added to the experience."

  • "We were celebrating my fiance's birthday. We were fortunate to have our usual server, Danielle. She is super and so very knowledgeable about the food and the wine. My fiance had to pork chop which he said was outstanding. I had the chicken which was very tasty as were the whipped potatoes. I personally did not care of the bed of mixed items the chicken was placed on."

  • "The NY strip, Shrimp over pasta, lobster chowder, banana pudding, and coconut cake were ordered. Every item was just out of this world. A plus for the entire experience."

  • "The Peninsula was quite an experience for us. My wife and I were excited to eat at such a highly acclaimed establishment and came in with huge expectations. The first thing that struck us was the closeness of the dining room and the noise. I was thankful we were seated in the corner, as it allowed us some privacy and reduced the overall sound of the place. Our waiter was good, but the sommelier was amazing. In fact, his demeanor, candor, and desire to see us pick the best bottle of wine for our meal was a highlight of the evening. As far as food goes, the place did not disappoint. The soup trio was magnificent and the entrees were prepared masterfully. One of the top five food experiences in my life. Certainly worth the effort!"

  • "Great place for an anniversary. We were seated too close to the entrance so there was a great amount of foot traffic going by us."

  • "EVERY single thing we tried was amaizing! If you like tartare, their Argentinian steak tartare was delicious. The trio of soups were good too, but in comparison to the lobster and mushroom soups the sweet potato was not that great. For entree I had the trout and it was simply perfect, my mom had the scallops and they were exquisite too! Of course for desert we had to try the coconut cake, and even thought I am not a coconut fan, this cake was perfection. Not too sweet, not too coconutty and very light. The cream cheese topping on this cake was the best I ever had. Overall this restaurant although pricey is worth every single penny, you won't leave dissapointed!"

  • "This restaurant is for foodies! From the staff to food presentation, it excelled. However , in spite of the velvet plush walls and carpet, it was very noisy so if you want a quiet romantic dinner this is not the place. The staff to diner ratio had to be the biggest I have seen. Very attentive Overall a great experience"

  • "This place was one of the best places I have eaten in a long time with excellent service also (we weren't hurried but weren't kept waiting long either). The decor was very elegant and I would definitely return with a special occasion celebration in mind. The food was very fresh-tasting with delicious steak and prosciutto on my salad as well as scrumptious bibb lettuce. Even the sides with the steak were good (which sometimes is not the case at a lot of places). I also enjoyed trying one of their special drinks, the Planters Punch."

  • "Well, it's a little pricey. The crowd is upscale and the food fit the clientele. Did I mention it's a little pricey? Sometimes value supersedes price and in this case we would gladly return and do it again. I never imagined they could take a simple Carolina mountain trout and produce the masterpiece I enjoyed. Service was spot on, this place is a winner."

  • "In town on vacation and we heard mixed reviews about it being expensive and a little snooty. It was pricey, but the atmosphere and service was not snooty at all. Bib salad salad was excellent. My wife had scallops and I had the bourbon shrimp-both excellent. Don't without trying the coconut cake."

  • "This restaurant lived up to its billing. Upscale Southern-style dining atmosphere.. The wait staff and door greeters were top notch and professional. The food was expertly prepared. We started with the lobster & corn chowder and a ginger pumpkin squash soup that were excellent. For our main course we had the local grilled swordfish in a ginger-lime buerre blanc with goat cheese smashed potatoes and the roasted rack of lamb which was cooked to a nice medium/medium-rare. Of course, you can't go here without getting the coconut cake for dessert. Wow! Great food!"

  • "Having enjoyed many outstanding meals at PG over the years, I decided to take my daughter for a special treat for her 14th Birthday. She ordered her favorite, a center cut filet to be cooked medium rare. I noticed she was not eating the meat as she normally would and asked her for a taste. I immediately realized why she wasn't eating it. It was stringy and not cooked as requested. This would have probably been okay with a decent cut, but this was horrible. I did not share this with our waiter because I did not want to create a disappointing memory for my daughter. The restaurant made a wonderful presentation of the coconut cake for her birthday, and it was fabulous as always."

  • "Peninsula Grill continues to be the standard bearer for fine dining in Charleston. The service, food, and of course Coconut cake remain as fresh and inventive as the day they opened."
