Diner Reviews
  • "The market deservedly has a bad reputation for hosting tourist traps, but don't hold that against Peninsula Grill. This place prepares top-quality food with interesting presentations, and has maybe the best wait staff in town serving it. It's not casual, but you can dress casually if you like. If you're looking for a special dinner, then this place definitely merits consideration."

  • "This restaurant never fails to please the senses and the epicurean delight. Outside of the food offerings, attention to service and atmosphere makes for a superb dining experience. Sea scallops and pork chops were outstanding. The wild mushroom soup was world class memorable. The banana dessert was beautifully presented and off the chart delicious. Chopin vodka martinis with stuffed blue cheese olives primed everyone's palate before dinner."

  • "The menu lacks creativity and passion. Our green beans were undercooked. Our food was lacking in seasoning. The service was excellent but the food itself was nothing extraordinary, ecspecially for the price we paid"

  • "Beautiful, wedding anniversary. First time there, will recommend to friends. Excellent in every way."

  • "Food excellent, Service excellent. the only downgrade is the ambiance. the Grill claims to have a dress code, but the male partons next to us were dressed in cargo shorts and tee shirts. They were not alone as there were a number of tables with shorts and very casual attire. I am not saying that a jacket should be required, but I would draw the line and slacks and collered shirt."

  • "We celebrated our anniversary with dinner at Peninsula Grill. The food was execellent as was the service. The wait staff picked up on "Our Anniversary" and took the extra effort to make it special. The dessert platters came out with the borders embossed with with "Happy Anniversary" in chocolate! Nice touch :)"

  • "I was seating in a booth in the bar section which was very nice not so noisy and very comfortable. I was a little bit disappointed about my Steak au Poivre, the meat was on the chewy side and the sauce not so "au Poivre", just bland. I had better! I was disappointed because of all the hype and high expectations of this place but overall I'm giving them the benefice of the doubt and will try another time if in Charleston."

  • "My daughter-in-law called this restaurant an "institution" of the best kind. Everything from appetizers through dessert was fantastic. Due to weather we arrived about 15 minutes late and were seated immediately. We shared 3 appetizers and 4 dinners. My favorites were the lobster prepared 3 ways and the trout. The coconut cake was unbelievably delicious and the portion enormous. Service was attentive, but not intrusive."

  • "One of best meals I have ever had. This is a great restaurant!"

  • "Beautiful place - came for the highly recommended coconut cake and was not disappointed. Started with light appetizer and cocktail and finished with delicious slice of heaven. Could not finish it all and it was nicely boxed for me to enjoy later. When I return to Charleston, I will be stopping at the Peninsula Grill for coconut cake!"

  • "Food was outstanding, but way over priced and noise level was very loud. Our server was extremely helpful with the menu choices."

  • "With only one night in Charleston we ate at The peninsula grill. We had a variety of appetizers, oysters, soup, heirloom tomato salad and beef tartar. One if those items made me violently ill."

  • "My new bride and I had our first dinner as a married couple at Peninsula Grill. It exceeded every possible measure. The food was incredible, desert (coconut cake) was too good to be real - though it was and our server (Jonathan) was the best ever. Highly recommend."

  • "The food, it's presentation and flavors, were outstanding. Our main courses, Wreck Fish and Carolina Trout, were prepared excellently. Moist, tender and delicious. Our server was knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. She recommended the Wreck Fish - outstanding choice! The highlight of the meal was the terrific Coconut Cake! It more than lived up to the advanced billing! The only negative was the high noise level in the restaurant, maybe due to several larger groups dining when we were there. We'll definitely dine here again."

  • "My first visit to Peninsula Grill in 10+ years, and it's just as good as I remembered. Impeccable service: Superbly attentive without being fussy or overly familiar, accommodating (I wanted three appetizers instead of a traditional entrée, which was no problem, and our server suggested an order that would mesh nicely with my companion's meal) and professional. The food was delicious, particularly the foie gras (I know, it's not politically correct, but how often do you have it?) and an heirloom tomato salad with goat cheese mousse. Our server recommended a perfect and moderately priced Chablis, which was delicious. And of course, coconut cake. It was a lovely evening in every respect and I will not wait another 10 years before returning."

  • "The first thing that arrived at our table was a small loaf of bread that would have made Wonderbread proud. The oyster stew was bland and the bourbon glazed shrimp was something I imagine I could have found at Applebee's. The trout was slightly better. There are many excellent restaurants in Charleston. This doesn't happen to be one of them."

  • "We had a wonderful experience at Peninsula; food was fantastic.... Service was excellent; they were even very accommodating for our kids.... My six year old daughter was cold and they brought her a pashmina to warm her up. We would definitely return"

  • "One word says it all: Excellent! This goes for the food, the service and the ambience."

  • "The food at Peninsula Grill was excellent, as expected. However, the service was disjointed & seemed awkward. The server never introduced himself by name, so I had to ask him at his third visit to the table. When I asked him to recap the special for me, he simply said "it's the halibut". Clearing the table was done by others, but sometimes by the waiter too. They couldn't seem to coordinate their efforts or determine when we were finished between courses. I was shocked to see that a Hendrick's & tonic was $12. Perhaps I'm out of touch because I don't often order cocktails at restaurants, but that's an exorbitant price to me. Lastly, we felt that the room had too many tables for its size. It was noisy, & conversations too easily overheard."

  • "The food was fantastic. Our server, Mark, was one of the best we ever had anywhere. Perfect blend of professionalism and personality. Engaging and friendly. Manager was excellent - didn't do the standard flyover but really made sure we had a great dining experience. Hadn't been to Peninsula in years, but intend to return in August! Nice job. Well worth the money."

  • "Celebrated our anniversary in Charleston. Peninsula was the last of 3 dinners and was by far the most enjoyable. This was the 2nd time we dined here in the past few years and I believe it has gotten even better than the 1st. Which was also amazing. Every step of the way! We enjoyed both the Mushroom soup and Chowder. Ribeye and Veal Chop perfectly seasoned and cooked exactly as we ordered. Side dishes were great. The service Eric provided was what I wish all fine dining servers would aspire to. Quietly there at all the right times. Never needed to ask for a thing. Great wine list. Romantic setting. Can't wait to return."

  • "The only GOOD thing is the tropical entrance way but we weren't there to eat plants. We entered into & thru a noisy bar to hunt a hostess - but didn't sit for 55 min. despite 2 empty tables which remained empty. The NOISE LEVEL was even more maddening in the dining room--you couldn't hear yourself think. The veal chop tasted spoiled, cold, tough and I would not eat it. 1/2" thick no sauce or ANYTHING. I am a veal chop lover; after the veal chop at Halls Chop house which was simply magnificent (less $)--I wouldn't give the veal chop I got at this rest. to my dogs. Waitboy was also RUDE. Get rid of the noise; put in plants & respace tables. Someone to greet you like your $ spends just as well as the $ who you already collected $ from."

  • "We took my mother to the Peninsula Grill for her 85th birthday. The service was perfect and the food was outstanding, each component on the plates seemed to be wisely considered and perfectly executed. I also thought the prices were quite reasonable for the quality of the experience."

  • "From start to finish, this was one of the best meals I have ever had. The Lobster "3-Way" appetizer was excellent, as was the Scallop entree and world-famous Coconut Cake. This is a must-eat spot in Charleston, SC!"

  • "My husband and I wanted one very special meal during our visit to Charleston and we picked a winner! From the classic decor to the delicious food served with some of the most professional service we have ever had - while still be warm and friendly - this was a meal to remember. When we ordered the fois gras for an appetizer our server told us it was finest in Charleston and she was not kidding. It was some of the finest I have ever had anywhere. That alone would have made the meal special but the entrees were delicious as well. Much to my dismay I could not finish my trout with blue crab and brown butter and almonds as it was so rich. I really wished we lived nearby so I could have taken the leftovers home!"

  • "Everything was perfect for a romantic Anniversary Dinner My wife's tenderloin was slightly overcooked and they took it back, along with my rack of lamb, and brought us two just cooked to perfection within about 3 minutes. They must have grabbed the next tenderloin and lamb rack coming off the grill"

  • "As always, dining at peninsula Grill was an enjoyable experience. We had out of town guests who really enjoyed the wine list and the food. The entire evening was fantastic at about $110 per person including wine and tip."

  • "The people we met in town described this as the original, best place in town to eat. The menu was thoughtful, with a designed dish section, as well as a la carte options. The wine list was extensive, and surprisingly unfamiliar, yet we were very happy with our selection. The crowd was on the 50+ age group. The service was very attentive, courteous and pleasantly southern."

  • "It was a VERY pleasant evening! Our waitress and her bus-person were very good! The sommelier was very attentive, personable and knowledgable of their cellar contents. Great wine selection. Just the right amount of attention. Not inexpensive, but worth every penny! Definitely do again."

  • "Parking was an issue when we arrived. We were expecting to be able to valet. The first 2 parking garages we tried were full. It was a 15 min walk from the garage to the restaurant. Our service was good, but the noise level in the room took away from the ambiance. There was a table of six behind us, and 1 of the men was totally obnoxious! He was boisterous, very very loud - he had to be the center of attention at all times. Everyone kept turning and looking at him. The food was very good."
