From the velvet lined walls to the dimly lit dining room this restaurant is a very romantic place. The food is delicious with an outstanding wine and drink selection. Our waitress was very accommodating and met all of our needs including immediately boxing up a slice of their famous 14 layer coconut cake to go as we decided to share their decadent chocolate dessert at the restaurant.

We were expecting a great evening at the Peninsula Grill and were not disappointed! Everything was great from the wait service (Dana and his team), the Martinis, the oysters, Dana's wine recommendation, the scallops and finally the excellent dessert (Coconut Creme Cake)! The entire meal was excellently paced. We didn't feel rushed, nor were we waiting for our next course. It is a little pricey but I would say it was worth it.

My husband and I had a lovely dinner here. We started with the oyster rockefeller and it was very good. We each had soup, myself the oyster stew and he the shecrab, both very tasty. For entrees I had the red grouper special which was great and he had the strip steak with peppercorn sauce (the steak is where the one star came off, he said it wasn't as flavorful a piece as he was hoping). We of course had the coconut cake for dessert which was everything everyone says it to be. We sat outside and it was delightful, our service was wonderful as well.

The food was great. The service was great. If you get dessert you must get the banana pudding. Best dessert I've ever had based on taste and appearance. It was artwork and we didn't even want to eat it. Then we tasted it and it was gone in a flash

The Peninsula Grill is a special dining experience. Elegant atmosphere, incredible service, beautiful decor. The food was delicious but with all of the competition in Charleston, only 4 stars if I compare it to some other restaurants in the city. Still excellent but a bit more "old school". Perfect for a special occasion.

Old style elegance with terrific food. The gazpacho and zucchini soup were great starters. Even for someone who doesn't regularly eat seafood, the grouper was too good to turn down. The ultimate coconut cake was worth every single calorie.

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the Peninsula Grill. The food and service were outstanding. I enjoyed a wonderful strip steak from the Restaurant Week menu and my husband had the delicious swordfish. We ended with the coconut cake, which was truly special. The outdoor garden area is beautiful, but unfortunately we couldn't dine there because of rain.

We enjoyed a wonderful birthday dinner here while in Charleston. As it was raining, we did not get to dine on the patio but were given a window table to appreciate the ambience. Dinner was superb. My husband had the scallops and as a lobster lover I had the lobster trio appetizer times 2 as my entree. Chef was very accommodating. Recommend with hesitation and would suggest reservations as there was not an empty table.

Peninsula Grill has been on our "must try" list for 6+ years and we finally made there for restaurant week. My husband ordered the restaurant week menu, and I ordered off the regular menu. Our mussels appetizer was outstanding and dessert was very good. The red wines by the glass were also very nice. Unfortunately, we were both very disappointed in our entrees, (NY strip streak and rack of lamb). They were cooked fine, but we agreed that neither one really had any flavor or tasted like much of anything. At $49 regular price for an entree, we won't be back. We've had too many better meals in Charleston at half the cost.

Maybe Peninsula's initial success when we moved to Charleston and first dined there was destined not to be equaled, but the last two visits have not measured up. The first-time rack of lamb was likely the best ever eaten, anywhere, and an early softshell crab was splendid as an appetizer. The second time the lamb was sent back and taken off the bill. This time it was in between, but closer to the first. Lobster three-way was warm instead of hot. The strip steak was fine, but the sauce overwhelmed the beef flavor a bit. The potato cake was luscious. Service is always excellent here, and Ralph's was no exception.

We enjoyed everything from the food to the service. I had a seafood sampler while my husband ordered a steak. Both were great, as was the heirloom tomatoe salad. The presentation and taste of these were 5-Star worthy. This was our favorite dining experience in Charleston and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys A more formal dining experience.

Went here for restaurant week and for my boyfriend's birthday, and it was a great experience. Service was outstanding and the food was prepared and presented with perfection. Our server even brought out a plate of chocolate truffles with a candle attached for the birthday celebration. Everything in this restaurant runs like a well-oiled machine, nothing is lacking. Definitely will return when visiting Charleston for a special occasion!

Although I have dined here before and had spectacular meals, I made the mistake of ordering the lobster this time. It was a disappointment and should not be on the menu if it cannot be cooked and presented well. It was deshelled as I asked, but was soggy and flat, not firm and full as it should be. I will return but stay away from this dish.

Restaurant Week visit. Special menu seemed to be a mini version of regular. had NY strip - about half the size of regular portion (size of small filet), done closer to rare than requested medium. Sides were ok. Wife had same - steak done properly but streaks of gristle. At regular pricing no plans to return.

The Peninsula Grill has many assets. The dining room is pleasant, tastefully furnished and has adequate soundproofing. The wait staff was excellent, attentive without being intrusive. The food is very good, albeit the menu is limited. The only two drawbacks are the parking and the prices. As might be expected in downtown Charleston, there is no free parking and no street parking available, for the most part. While one might also expect higher prices in this milieu, $38 for roasted chicken, free range or not, is ridiculous. Most entrees start at $30 and go up from there, so if you're looking for value in a meal, this will not be your cup of tea.

Went there on a business trip, just so happened to also be restaurant week which was the first time I had been during this time. I did not order from the special restaurant week menu but it appeared to have a number of options and fairly priced. This was not my first time here though, had the pork chops both times and they are excellent. Definitely a place to take a date if you wanted to impress them but be prepared to drop a littl dough. The banana pudding dessert is one of a kind as far as presentation goes. Their coconut cake is highly sought after, I do not even like coconut cake and I thought it was good. I will be returning no doubt

Everyone should experience service at this level at least once. Peninsula Grill makes you feel special from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave. And the coconut cake is fabulous. One piece is more than enough for a couple. Though we enjoyed our entrees, they were not the highlight of the meal. Understand that the stellar service and first class ambiance is built into the pricing of the food. Great place for a special occasion.

We were coming to Charleston to celebrate and anniversary and chose the Peninsula Grill based on the recommendation of others on Open Table. We were very glad that we did! My wife has a number of allergies (gluten, dairy, soy, nuts) and our waiter was incredibly knowledgeable with his recommendations and suggestions that would accommodate her. He surprised us with freshly baked gluten free rolls, and gluten free desert options. Food was cooked to perfection and the presentation was exquisite. If you are looking for the ideal spot in the historic district of Charleston, look no further.
