Diner Reviews
  • "We've eaten at P Grill many times and always enjoy the meal there. Given the success of the restaurant I'd love to see the owner spend a little more on noise attenuation. The walls are nicely sound absorbant but the flat hard ceiling and the sea grass style carpet do nothing to help the noise level. During our recent visit the noise level was so bad that people had to shout at each other to be heard. My wife and I couldn't hear each other across a very small table. Not what you want for fine dining!"

  • "The Peninsula Grill is a restaurant like no other. The menu is absolutely amazing! Anything you order is cooked to perfection and downright delicious. When I dined there tonight with my family, the bibb lettuce wedge, heirloom tomato salad, and the wreckfish special were absolutely fantastic. Not to mention the coconut cake for dessert, which is the BEST coconut cake I've ever had! Honestly, the Peninsula Grill is one of my favorite restaurants in America. Whenever I'm in Charleston, I ALWAYS make a reservation!"

  • "Well worth the price for a special, occasion. Everything went well. Great food, wonderful service. A very nice touch that the server knew our name."

  • "Wonderful meal from start to finish. When called to confirm our reservation my wife asked about appropriate dress for ladies and was given a description that caused some hesitation. After reluctantly deciding on a very nice dress, which she was certain wouldn't be nice enough given the dress code we were given, we were seated and couldn't help but notice a number of other patrons that were either not given the dress code or were permitted to ignore it. Great meal but if you have a dress code please enforce it."

  • "Appetizers, entrees and desserts were all fantastic! Best meal ever. Worth every penny. Steve, our waiter, was friendly and very helpful in recommending some food choices. We Will be back next time we visit Charleston."

  • "My wife and I were greeted and seated promptly. (Thanks Open Table.) Our server, Delia, was a gem - fun, informative, and gave us the right amount of attention. We both ordered the filet - and it was awesome. I literally can not recall a better steak experience. Yes, it's pricey, but it was worth it! Oh, and the coconut cake... I'm salivating just thinking about it."

  • "We thought it was amazing. Excellent service from Steve, great ambiance and the best if all, delightful food that wasn't too heavy yet was full of flavor and well thought out design and presentation."

  • "Was taken aback when we were told we could not dine in dinning room due to our shoes. We were seated @ tables in bar area. When making reservation the information about open toe shoes for men should have been stated."

  • "Great dinner on a secluded outdoor patio. Pricey, but worth it for a special occasion. Oyster stew was outstanding! Service was professional and close but not hovering."

  • "My husband and I ate dinner at Peninsula a few nights ago for my birthday, mainly so I could have the coconut cake for my birthday cake. We had requested courtyard seating as it was a beautiful evening so we got to enjoy the setting all evening. I had a Teatini which was delicious-citrusy and refreshing; my husband had a Spanish red wine which he really enjoyed. I had the sea scallops with lobster, and my husband had a tenderloin. My dinner was one of the best I've ever had...perfectly seasoned; my husband said his tenderloin was excellent. Of course, there was the coconut cake-perfect birthday cake. Our waitress was welcoming and friendly; service was fantastic...great place to celebrate, or just sit in the courtyard with a cocktail."

  • "Thanks for making our evening special, again. The veal chop and shrimp were great, and the service was very good."

  • "Went here for a birthday celebration. They brought out the famous coconut cake with the plate all dressed up for a birthday. It was scrumptious! Pretty sweet, so would recommend having a coffee of sorts to pair with it. Very romantic - so go with your loved one!"

  • "We went to Peninsula Grill because lots of people recommended it, including all those on-line. The food lacked creativity and tasted very average. The service was good and the atmosphere is very pleasant but there are a lot of places I'd rather dine in Charleston."

  • "The Peninsula was in every way outstanding. The foie gras was as good as it gets as was the steak tartare. However, the chef brought the lowly chicken to a phenomenal level - probably one of the top three chickens I have ever had. The desserts were of course excellent. Service was knowledgeable, very prompt without being aggressive and professional. This is really a 5 star restaurant."

  • "This restaurant is overblown. We were treated very badly and almost turned away because my son was wearing a t shirt. Extremely loud while super pretentious . Food was very good but we felt completely demoralized"

  • "We have been visiting Charleston since the 1990s, and while trendy restaurants come and go (many of them, wonderful), Charleston for us has always been about its timelessness and Southern elegance. The Penninsula Grill, with its explicit and implied dress codes, and always wonderful food brought by extremely attentive waiters, captures the essence of "our" Charleston. Everything we experienced during our most recent visit was great, but our waiter, Delia, stood out. She made the visit quite exceptional."

  • "With our first night in Charleston, we originally chose this restaurant because of it's close proximity to our hotel. We really hadn't read much about it and in fact were looking forward to a dinner at another restaurant well known the following night. Boy, were we pleased with this decision! The service and food were excellent!! The sommelier nailed our wine choice perfectly. Our server was very detailed with his descriptions and assistance with our choices. He truly wanted us to enjoy the evening. They couldn't have done anything better. This meal ended up being the best one while we were in Charleston. Well worth your time!!"

  • "This was one of the best meals we have had in a long time. Very interesting menu. Both entrees were delicious. Excellent wine list. The highlight was the personal service. We were never rushed, but our waiter was there whenever we even thought about asking a question. We were in Charleston on vacation, but may go back just for the restaurant."

  • "You often hear about the Peninsula Grill for dinner, but Brunch is also an excellent option for this landmark restaurant. A wonderful continental breakfast comes with hot breakfast choices, including beverages! One of the best breakfast values we experienced in Charleston, I must say. And then there is the Coconut cake which we had to try, and it lived up to its reputation and then some. AND, even though we made a reservation through open table, we just walked right in with no wait. Amazing staff and beautiful setting made this our favorite breakfast in Charleston."

  • "This was our 4th dinner at the Peninsula Grill which in itself says how much we enjoy dining there. Food is exceptional, service is first class, really nothing more needs to be said."

  • "The food was great. Soups (lobster/corn and the oyster stew) where exceptional. Scallops perfectly cooked and beef at the perfect temperature. Our waitress, Delia, was very nice and attentive. Oh yes Coconut cake. YUM. Overall very nice experience. Only negative is noise level for those of us with abused hearing. Ask for a table away from the kitchen area or weather permitting out on the lovely patio."

  • "Second time to visit. Best restaurant in Charleston, and there are a bunch of great ones! Scallops and Halibut were fantastic!"

  • "We loved our meal at Husk, which we felt we had to go to on our first, and perhaps last, visit to lovely Charleston. An excellent, inventive menu paired with friendly, attentive service. We were seated on the second floor; a somewhat modern setting inside an older, homespun building. Although the menu changes daily, stand-outs when we dined included a Bibb salad with Southern-fried chicken skins and crumbled hard boiled egg, peach BBQ rib appetizers and a cornbread side dish that has now forever set the standard for me. A very nice selection of wines that I don't think included anything over $100. A must-visit venue, truly a stand-out in a town simply crammed with good restaurants."

  • "My wife and I used to eat routinely at Peninsula Grill upon visits to Charleston, then we made a project of trying as many of the other notables in town. We returned this week and found it just as good as always, still one of the best in a town with a lot of choices. Nice ambience, great food. The only complaint was that my wife felt the server concentrated his attention on me, but the service was prompt, nonetheless. Well recommended for good reason."

  • "Thoughtful, respectful service which is what one expects at an establishment such as this. The waitress was perfect. The other servers (you will see many) tended to every need without obstructing conversation at the table. We ordered steak and the pork chop. Both were cooked exactly as we requested. When I requested my chop to be cooked a certain way, and that I did not want to offend the chef, the waitress replied that the dish was for me, not the chef. I thought that was the perfect response. This restaurant is lovely to look at. The day we went was too hot to sit outside, but I can imagine a lovely evening outside with the gas lamps and beautiful courtyard."

  • "The inside was quite small and when full could be a bit loud. It has a nice ambiance than lends itself to a romantic evening, but with the closeness of the tables and the noise levels, it could be a bit distracting. However, the food was prepared well and was quite tasty. The waiter and wait staff was very attentive and made some great recommendations. My wife and I were celebrating our 25th Anniversary and they were all so kind to us, to include writing Happy Anniversary, in chocolate, on our Dessert plates. However, it is a bit pricey, but location and wait staff is not cheap. We would certainly return on future trips."

  • "Whenever in Charleston, I always take friends and family to Peninsula Grill. The food is always amazing, and the atmosphere is great as well. The location is perfect, and knowing that you will always have consistent food, service, and ambiance is a plus. I would highly recommend to anyone visiting charleston!"
