Diner Reviews
  • "The first thing that arrived at our table was a small loaf of bread that would have made Wonderbread proud. The oyster stew was bland and the bourbon glazed shrimp was something I imagine I could have found at Applebee's. The trout was slightly better. There are many excellent restaurants in Charleston. This doesn't happen to be one of them."

  • "Excellent food prepared to order. Our waitress, Delia, and the other wait staff were very attentive. We had not been to this restaurant before, but will definitely return. Highly recommend."

  • "Celebrated our anniversary in Charleston. Peninsula was the last of 3 dinners and was by far the most enjoyable. This was the 2nd time we dined here in the past few years and I believe it has gotten even better than the 1st. Which was also amazing. Every step of the way! We enjoyed both the Mushroom soup and Chowder. Ribeye and Veal Chop perfectly seasoned and cooked exactly as we ordered. Side dishes were great. The service Eric provided was what I wish all fine dining servers would aspire to. Quietly there at all the right times. Never needed to ask for a thing. Great wine list. Romantic setting. Can't wait to return."

  • "The people we met in town described this as the original, best place in town to eat. The menu was thoughtful, with a designed dish section, as well as a la carte options. The wine list was extensive, and surprisingly unfamiliar, yet we were very happy with our selection. The crowd was on the 50+ age group. The service was very attentive, courteous and pleasantly southern."

  • "The only GOOD thing is the tropical entrance way but we weren't there to eat plants. We entered into & thru a noisy bar to hunt a hostess - but didn't sit for 55 min. despite 2 empty tables which remained empty. The NOISE LEVEL was even more maddening in the dining room--you couldn't hear yourself think. The veal chop tasted spoiled, cold, tough and I would not eat it. 1/2" thick no sauce or ANYTHING. I am a veal chop lover; after the veal chop at Halls Chop house which was simply magnificent (less $)--I wouldn't give the veal chop I got at this rest. to my dogs. Waitboy was also RUDE. Get rid of the noise; put in plants & respace tables. Someone to greet you like your $ spends just as well as the $ who you already collected $ from."

  • "My husband and I wanted one very special meal during our visit to Charleston and we picked a winner! From the classic decor to the delicious food served with some of the most professional service we have ever had - while still be warm and friendly - this was a meal to remember. When we ordered the fois gras for an appetizer our server told us it was finest in Charleston and she was not kidding. It was some of the finest I have ever had anywhere. That alone would have made the meal special but the entrees were delicious as well. Much to my dismay I could not finish my trout with blue crab and brown butter and almonds as it was so rich. I really wished we lived nearby so I could have taken the leftovers home!"

  • "WOULD NOT GO BACK -- SOO COLD -- -CAKE WAS AWESOME, BUT NOT WORTH THE TEMPERATURES"

  • "The food at Peninsula Grill was excellent, as expected. However, the service was disjointed & seemed awkward. The server never introduced himself by name, so I had to ask him at his third visit to the table. When I asked him to recap the special for me, he simply said "it's the halibut". Clearing the table was done by others, but sometimes by the waiter too. They couldn't seem to coordinate their efforts or determine when we were finished between courses. I was shocked to see that a Hendrick's & tonic was $12. Perhaps I'm out of touch because I don't often order cocktails at restaurants, but that's an exorbitant price to me. Lastly, we felt that the room had too many tables for its size. It was noisy, & conversations too easily overheard."

  • "We had the lamb chops and filet and the food was great! The side dishes were also very good. Everyone recommended the coconut cake which was good as well. We definitely would recommend this restaurant and we will go back."

  • "We had a wonderful experience at Peninsula; food was fantastic.... Service was excellent; they were even very accommodating for our kids.... My six year old daughter was cold and they brought her a pashmina to warm her up. We would definitely return"

  • "The food was fantastic. Our server, Mark, was one of the best we ever had anywhere. Perfect blend of professionalism and personality. Engaging and friendly. Manager was excellent - didn't do the standard flyover but really made sure we had a great dining experience. Hadn't been to Peninsula in years, but intend to return in August! Nice job. Well worth the money."

  • "Perfect setting to celebrate anniversary! Service was impeccable. Had lobster trio and oyster samplers to start -- both very good. Would have loved larger portion, but by the time we were done, we were stuffed, so in hindsight, everything was sized appropriately. They offered a "special" fish dinner that sounded wonderful, but my wife preferred swordfish. The staff prepared the swordfish with the accompaniments of the "special" and she loved it. We read reviews of the coconut cake and since we both love coconut, couldn't resist it. Glad we didn't. It was really incredible! Probably the most expensive meal (over $300 with tip) we've had in a long time, but worth it!"

  • "From start to finish, this was one of the best meals I have ever had. The Lobster "3-Way" appetizer was excellent, as was the Scallop entree and world-famous Coconut Cake. This is a must-eat spot in Charleston, SC!"

  • "We took my mother to the Peninsula Grill for her 85th birthday. The service was perfect and the food was outstanding, each component on the plates seemed to be wisely considered and perfectly executed. I also thought the prices were quite reasonable for the quality of the experience."

  • "We went here for our anniversary dinner based on some recommendations and it was truly fantastic!"

  • "Our first visit and we had a great meal. Oysters, peach-watermelon salad, Trout, Swordfish, Cipollini onions/mushrooms and cheese plate. Good wine by glass selection. Very nice attentive and friendly service. Attractive main dining room, although it can get noisy. Only problem was that we came directly from the airport after a 3,000 mile trip and they initially didn't want to seat us because I was wearing a tee-shirt (a nice expensive one, I might add) instead of a collared shirt. The website suggests a jacket but not required, so why aggravate a customer who came a long way just to spend his money at their establishment? So better to have a $12.99 Walmart collared woven on vs a $150 Armani tee??? Too pretentious!"

  • "Everything was perfect for a romantic Anniversary Dinner My wife's tenderloin was slightly overcooked and they took it back, along with my rack of lamb, and brought us two just cooked to perfection within about 3 minutes. They must have grabbed the next tenderloin and lamb rack coming off the grill"

  • "As always, dining at peninsula Grill was an enjoyable experience. We had out of town guests who really enjoyed the wine list and the food. The entire evening was fantastic at about $110 per person including wine and tip."

  • "Very well paced meal. Steak tartar was spot on. The salads left a little to be desired from the flavor profiles, but still good. Scallops were outstanding as usual, but the lobster/crab cake duo was less than what is expected from a top-notch restaurant. Everything was still very tasty, fresh and although seating is horribly cramped, the staff does a wonderful job."

  • "It was a VERY pleasant evening! Our waitress and her bus-person were very good! The sommelier was very attentive, personable and knowledgable of their cellar contents. Great wine selection. Just the right amount of attention. Not inexpensive, but worth every penny! Definitely do again."

  • "Parking was an issue when we arrived. We were expecting to be able to valet. The first 2 parking garages we tried were full. It was a 15 min walk from the garage to the restaurant. Our service was good, but the noise level in the room took away from the ambiance. There was a table of six behind us, and 1 of the men was totally obnoxious! He was boisterous, very very loud - he had to be the center of attention at all times. Everyone kept turning and looking at him. The food was very good."

  • "Running this type of high end establishment has to be difficult so my review is aimed at the food only. Service is the best in Charleston or anywhere else, for that matter. The ambiance is very upscale and comfortable. My disappointment with my last visit was with the food. When you pay for upscale, there should be a WOW factor that you cannot get at your average establishment. We have experienced this every other time we have eaten at Peninsular Grill. Unfortunately, not this time. The appetizer was an oyster assortment that, frankly, was so small I would not have served it. I could not even find an oyster in one of the shells. The entree was ok but no WOW factor. At premium prices, you should expect premium value."

  • "We had our 30th anniversary dinner at the Peninsula Grill, and had the experience we had hoped for. The food was very good, and the service was excellent. They also have a very good by-the-glass wine list, which made matching wines with courses much easier."

  • "My husband & I had just arrived in Charleston. Neither of us had ever traveled there & Pennisula Grill was recommended to us by a friend. It is a little formal, so long pants & closed toe shoes are required for men. Jackets are encouraged. The inside seemd a little stuffy but the hostess offered us a garden table. It was not very hot that evening, so we decided to sit out there. It was a peaceful and beautiful setting. The oysters appetizer was outstanding and so was a airloom tomato salad. The scallops were delicious as well but the grouper special was a little over cooked. We had the coconut cake for desert , which they are famous for. It was a gigantic piece & we barely made a dent in but so good."

  • "We celebrated our anniversary at the Peninsula Grill. We chose to dine outdoors in the romantic garden setting even though the meal would have been more formal indoors. The weather was perfect, the service attentive without being intrusive and the food delicious. Portions were substantial but not overwhelming (with the exception of their famous coconut cake - it is a must share). My Carolina trout was perfection. His Bourbon glazed shrimp were divine. The heirloom tomato salad was actually ripe and yummy although early in the season. We would have the same meal again. Wine prices were reasonable although you could go wild."

  • "This is a very nice, classy restaurant, with excellent service and beautifully presented food. We personally prefer a more casual setting, but thought the restaurant was lovely although a bit loud inside. The food was quite good, but rather expensive. For a romantic special occasion, this would be a great choice, especially if you could sit in their absolutely beautiful outdoor setting - as long as it's not a blazing, hot summer day!"

  • "Peninsular Grill is a bit noisy but the experience is worth it. Their service is impeccable and the food is to die for. The presentations are artful and they are served by a well trained and attentive staff. Go for the entrees but stay for the coconut cake."

  • "My wife and I chose the Peninsula Grill for our anniversary dinner. This was our first time dining there and we were very impressed! My wife had the pan-seared grouper and said that it was the best fish dish she had ever tasted. I ate the bourbon grilled shrimp, which was very good. Probably the highlight of the meal was the coconut cake for dessert. It was to die for. The meal was a bit pricey, but for a special occasion, it was well worth it."
