Diner Reviews
  • "Made a reservation, but that didn't matter, one hour in we still did not have drinks and two hours later we still didn't have food. We left before the food ever made it out. Voiced our complaints to one manager who promised things would be better but they never were, so I talked to a second manager who allowed us to leave after two hours of terrible service without paying for our drinks. We were a party of 12, and looking forward to having a good time. It was awful and I was so embarrassed for having chosen the restaurant just to receive the worst service I've ever experienced. Worst of all...after being patient for two hours we never received a reason as to why our party received such horrible service."

  • "We didn't get food because it took 20 minutes for our drink order. When our drinks came out it they were terrible. Our on the rocks margarita were in dirty whiskey glasses."

  • "Good service and food. No complaints! Pitcher margaritas are a but expensive but that was to be expected."

  • "Filthiest restaurant bathroom I've ever been in, it was truly disgusting. A waitress came up to the hostess while we were being seated and argued with her that she couldn't seat us which was awkward for us. The food was ok. The Mexican martini was really good."

  • "Our waiter was also the bartender. So we ran out of chips and drinks multiple times. None of the other servers stopped to help or assist us. They also serve fake shrimp in their fajitas. The food was less than ideal. We will not be returning."

  • "My friends and I loved this place! Their lobster and shrimp quesadillas were amazing! "

  • "The food at Pelons is great and so was the service. We loved that we could make reservations online and everything was ready for us when we arrived. I loved my enchiladas and the two different kinds of salsa were awesome."

  • "Very good guacamole and salsa has a good kick to it. I tried something new this time - a layered chicken enchilada. It was a bit too much for me and I found that the lower layers of the blue corn tostadas that were used were 'soggy' for lack of a better term. I liked that I could get black beans as an option. I didn't care for the cilantro rice. Service was very good and I enjoyed eating outdoors on a nice evening."

  • "First time we've been able to actually sit down and eat at Pelon's. Everything was great, service and food were great, except that the men's restroom was in a port-a-potty state. I'd also remind your floor manager to smile, at least every once in a while. I wouldn't want to work for that guy! Constructive criticism; please do not contact."

  • "Had a quite large party including adults, children, and babies. Everyone was comfortable, was easy to all fit together. The food was delicious, we all had something different and we all loved it! The drinks were just as yummy and fresh as the food! I will definitely be coming back again!"

  • "It didn't seem as if anyone was managing the mayhem. We wondered if the kitchen and service bar was across town because we wouldn't see our server for ages. it took at least 20 minutes to get drinks any time we ordered. We couldn't tell if they were understaffed, undertrained or just lazy. We did like the ambiance on the patio. If only the owners cared about service."

  • "I enjoyed eating out on the patio since the weather was perfect for it. I had shrimp fajitas; they had the right amount of 'kick' to them. I thought the guac was very good also. "

  • "I went there on a Friday night with a girlfriend. Our server did not smile at us once! Even though we were being friendly and asking questions she would stare at us dead in the eye and answer flatly. We watched her joke around with the table of older, professional looking men beside us and wondered if we had somehow offended her. She never asked if we wanted water or how the food was. The food runner who we saw once was a ray of sunshine compared to this chick. We were sat right next to a speaker playing TERRIBLE, cheesy rock music. Sounded like TOOL or KoRn or some other passé 90's agg-rock. I promise you no one there was enjoying it. The food was ok but our server pretty much ruined the experience for us. Disappointing."

  • "Atmosphere is relaxed, but fun at the same time. Food is a step up from the everyday tex-mex, but very reasonably priced. Outdoor seating adds a nice element, especially in the evening."

  • "We chose Pelon's for its proximity to Stubb's Ampitheater. The menu was their "concert menu" so it was condensed but great choices. The drinks were good too! We will definitely go back again."

  • "The environment was great, but I will never go back. The margaritas were over priced and did not have any alcohol in it. The food had no flavor and was almost cold when it came out."

  • "Although I have been before to dine outside, I most recently went on a very chilly day and the friendly service and delicious soup was a welcomed reprieve to the outside. It was quiet and the kitchen was quick to get out meals out so my lunch date and I enjoyed our entire lunch hour leisurely eating."

  • "I only found this place because there was an opening on New Year's Eve! Ended up very satisfied! Mango ceviche was incredible! Nice atmosphere, great location across from Stubb's and near Esther's Follies and 6th Street. This was a fun date place - and first date place. Relaxed but not overly romantic."

  • "Chips were too thick and hard, Queso, Shrimp and Lobser enchilatas avg, fajitas avg"

  • "Overall, just not a pleasant experience. Location is perfect, but the food quality is lacking-- like El Arroyo lacking."

  • "Pros: Good location right across the street for Stubbs. Cons: We were there for dinner on Sunday night and only the limited "Concert menu" was available which meant no fajitas."

  • "If you take a reservation for 8 in front of the TV on the patio for the UT game and then rent our the patio, call the person who's table you gave away and let them know that them and their guest are screwed...its just good manners."

  • "Stubbs menu very limited. Server was nice but scattered and food was fair, at best."

  • "I visit Austin a few times a year so I haven't been to every Mexican restaurant but I love this one. It's my favorite so far. It's just great old school Mexican food. It seems that too many Mexican restaurants in Austin are doing some type of new age fine dining Mexican food and it just doesn't work."

  • "Our first visit. Turned out that if Stubb's across the street has a concert that evening, then Pelons offers only a concert dining menu for that evening. It doesn't state that on their website. However, since a couple of us were vegetarians, and the concert menu had no options for vegetarian dining, they kindly offered us the regular menu to dine from especially since we had arrived early enough that the kitchen wasn't "concert diners" busy. The service was very good, the waitress very considerate. Food was good; the nacho platter was very nicely made as were the spinach veggie enchiladas with tomatillo sauce. The cilantro rice was good but could have used a bit more spicy punch and I need more of a cilantro taste. Friendly staff."

  • "We celebrated a birthday with a group of 7 and were very pleased with the night. The service was great - Lola was our waitress and she was there when we needed her and as importantly, not when we didn't. The Queso was AMAZING and everyone enjoyed their meals. I was surprised to see the place had so many empty tables. I hope that they can find a crowd and get some folks in the door."

  • "We went here to eat before a concert at Stubb's. The location can't be beat & the food was great! Had concerns about it being super crowded because of the concert but we were seated quickly & service was excellent!"

  • "The restaurant is nice and the food was good. Our waitress was horrible and unfortunately that ruined the entire experience. I would probably go back again just to try it one more time."

  • "Decent food, decent margarita, decent atmosphere, but in an area completely saturated with Tex-Mex, patios, and margaritas you're gonna have to be better than decent to get noticed."

  • "Our first time at Pelons. We enjoyed dinner before a concert at Stubbs which is located directly across the street. The ritas and Tex Mex were good and our waitress was outstanding. We liked the ambience and plan to return for dinner and drinks again."

  • "Great space - especially patio Mediocre service - didn't explain happy hour. Couldn't make strong recommendations from menu since she hadn't tried many things, never around. This burns me when the server has a guaranteed tip because of group - unapologetically unattentive. Menu reads much better than it tastes. Underwhelming. Steak fajitas were mushy like meat was over marinated and salted. Go here for the patio and drinks. Pass on more than chips, salsa and queso if you're hungry. Disappointing best says it. I had high hopes."
