Diner Reviews
  • "i have been 2 times in pelago and everytime i had an excellent dinner. i know italian cuisine quite well and the pelago belongs to the upper end. my recommendation are the octopus as starter and then pasta. i had each time some selection from cheese, very good."

  • "Pelago has a great location, just off Michigan avenue in the gold coast. The restaurant is lovely and quiet. I tried several of their luncheon salads and was disappointed. Perhaps the thing to eat here for lunch is a pasta dish, but they need to know there should be some lo-cal options for those who want to watch calories! I would go back again. JSL"

  • "We had been to Pelago a few years ago and despite the food being fabulous our service was less than kind. But we decided to give the place another try and we are so glad we did. Everything was Outstandingly Fabulous - Burrata & Tomato salad, White Asparagus Risotto, and the Grouper (and that was just what I had). The wine list was extensive. I can't wait for it to get warm so we can try to garner an outdoor table & enjoy another wonderful meal at Pelago."

  • "Wonderful food and a great staff make this the place we go for special events. The flowers have been planted outside in hope for warm weather when we return for dining on a warm Chicago evening."

  • "Great food, I'd put it athe top of Chicago high-end Italian food. We had a great time."

  • "A friendly VERY upscale Italian place that has become a must stop when in Chicago."

  • "Our second visit to this fine restaurant! Looking for great food with fantastic dinning experience this is your place. Excellent restaurant, great atmosphere, we will be back without a doubt!"

  • "We were very excited to try Pelago however left extremely disappointed. Beware that the staff pours water out immediately, not offering tap water and then hitting you with a $67 water bill buried in the check (in our case). On the food side, the carpaccio, sirloin entrée and rack of lamb entrée were all very underseasoned and flavorless. The lamb gnocchi was severely oversalted and hard to finish. The rack of lamb, ordered medium, arrived rare. Upon resubmittal to the kitchen, it was hacked into pieces and charred/burned on the outside leaving the inside...again rare. Look forward to a 4x retail price markup on the all Italian wine list and staff without a clue about the flavor profiles or description of the wines."

  • "Not many small independent restaurants like this left in Chicago. It is a quaint, high end place with excellent service and food. It is an expensive night but everything we encountered was delicious and rich."

  • "Wanted an upscale Italian meal and this place delivered. Service was attentive and responsive to your needs. It's a traditional Italian menu with antipasti, lighter first and heavier second courses. We all had the snapper prepared whole and fileted after presentation. Desserts were fabulous and capped a delightful dining experience in everyway."

  • "This is my second time to this restaurant. It was used to be very good but my second visit didn't meet my expectation. I personally wasn't that impressed by the pasta especially the risotto (& Chef's menu) which was recommended by the Manager."

  • "Don't let the title scare you. With mains in the 36-38 range you expect the food to be good and it jumps to superb From the service to the utensils everything is spot on. Unless you are a huge eater two corsets will leave you with food to go. Wife had the chicken neck pasta and said it was the finest pasta dish she had ever had. Ordered the rabbit and it was moist and the skin was succulent . They were not very happy that we brought a bottle with us and there is a hefty corkage fee. We will return to enjoy the food and surrounding ."

  • "The pasta at Pelago is simply spectacular. We all really enjoyed the evening pasta special -- black truffle fettucine. On a par with Babbo's in NYC. Excellent wine list. Very good service. The entrees were less stellar but solid. When I go back, I will stick with pasta."

  • "If you want outstanding food; lovely ambience - this restaurant is for you. However, be prepared to pay at least 50% more than other similar restaurants of this type in Chicago....your choice. I never in my life encountered wine prices or portions of wine that were rationed out as if it were a dose of medicine in a glass. We will never return because of the inflated prices. In addition, our server tried to rush us through and was very impersonal. I complained to the restaurant manager, asking him to tell our server to slow it down, which he addressed right away. But they were not all that busy and I didn't appreciate dropping the kind of money that we did to be finished with "the experience" in less than 90 minutes. Buyer beware!"

  • "So good...had more appetizers than normal and for the first time ever with this favorite dish of mine I couldn't finish my grouper! :("

  • "Second visit to this fine dining restaurant. High-end Italian specializing in seafood. Impeccable service and extensive wine list."

  • "Best Italian in Chicago far better than pretentious Italian places like Spaggia yet not your grandmother's Italian. Chief actually has a fine collection of 16th century cook books and enjoys talking about them."

  • "I have traveled all over and I have eaten in many restaurants and I would rate this one in the top 10 for food. I have been there twice now and everyone's meals were very good and the price point is reasonable for the quality, as well. The place is not overdone, quiet, but if you like good food and good service, this is your place."

  • "Our meals were fabulous and service was attentive. The selection is varied and extensive. We over-ordered and over-indulged, as the portions are generous. With several bottles of wine, it an expensive enjoyable evening."

  • "This place is expensive, but the food and service was great. I've dined at Charlie Trotters, Blackbird and Tru and while this isn't quite on THAT level, it is similar in terms of experience and obviously at a slightly more accessible price. I would recommend this place for a fancy date."

  • "The setting is one of subdued elegance. The service is outstanding. attentive without being overbearing or obtrusive. The wine list is extensive but pricey, most bottles over $100. The food is very good but choosing well makes a difference. The primi included risotto with asparagus (wonderful!) and veal ravioli (very good); the second were sliced sirloin (very good but TOO much) and veal chop (tasty but not well trimmed). For dolci we had a three cheese plate I would recommend and a frozen vanilla sabayon that was excellent. Bottle of Soave Classico and of Vino Nobile, Pellagrino with meal and coffee after. $450 incl tip and tax. We will return next year."

  • "I expected this place to be over $50 per plate but the dishes were in the mid to upper $30s. I had the lamb shank, it was very tender. Mostly couples and some double dates when I was there, noise level was perfect. I would recommend taking a date here."

  • "I was looking forward to returning to Palago because my first experience was incredible. After being seated, we ordered a bottle of wine and after 20 minutes of watiing we had to ask the waiter where it was, he seemed to be indifferent. It was finally presented after after another 10 minutes. As an appetiser we ordered the calamari with the polenta. The polenta was good, but I had to spit the calamari out into my napkin because it was under cooked and jellylike. We then both decided to order pasta, the gnocchi with the eggplant, and what was decribed as square noodles was a mushy bland spaghetti. Overall, the quality of the food and service was no where commensurate to the cost of the meal. I would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "Good food and very romantic but the prices are out of touch with the food. Haven't been here in a year and use to come regularly but now I remember why I don't."

  • "Brought two friends from the burbs here, they were both happy with their dishes and we had a great time. And as always, I'm obsessed with the grouper and polenta! And whatever they dress the greens with (that accompany the squid), I'm obsessed with that too! Also love love love the mini ottomans they place at the table for ladies with handbags. It always amazes me, there is nowhere to place the bag. And are ladies really expected to put them on the floor?? Love!"

  • "This place is the real deal. They did an excellent job of selecting a very nice Italian Cab within my budget. Three of us had the veal chop and it was prepared perfectly. The fourth person in our party ordered off the menu and created the dish beautifully and with out any complaining."

  • "We had lunch at Pelago the other day, the restaurant was empty. Service was terrific as was the whole experience. We both had the veal milanese, quite good. Certainly will go back. Bread service could be a bit better; after the first round, the bread tray never reappeared."

  • "I took my fiancee here for her birthday. We had reservations and were seated in a nice cosy corner by the fireplace. We had a grilled octopus app that was phenomonal and were both quite pleased with the pasta dishes we ordered. Service...was the best i've ever received. A lovely romantic evening."

  • "Service, ambience and especially the food and wine were incredible. Amazing flavor of the cherry tomatoes in January off the vine(not gassed) with Mozzarella appetizer. Wild boar tenderloin had both phenomenal presentation and taste. Staff was very attentive and helpful with appropriate wine selection. Fabulous signature desert of mint gelato with hazelnut chocolate for dessert. We plan to return again soon!!"

  • "This was the second time we dined at Pelago, and it was just as good as the first time! The service and food were both excellent! I would highly recommend Pelago if you are looking for an elegant Italian dining experience!"

  • "This was our fifth time dining in Pelago this year. Definately our favorite Italian restaurant in Chicago, we have tried many others in the "top ten" lists but have not found better prepared food and atmosphere. We had the tasting pasta to start and then fish to complete. Both were excellent. The food was always delivered hot and just prepared (not overcooked). The service was attentive without being intrusive. Will dine there again in 2014!"
