Diner Reviews
  • "Our food was perfect. Our cocktails were good but a bit in the sweet side for our taste. Our waiter was excellent. He was excited about what he was serving and very knowledgeable. Plus, he was polite. I often find at trendy places like this that the waiters are rude. It was refreshing to be at a trendy foodie place with good service. "

  • "My husband picked out Peche due to its reputation on foodie sites, and that was correct -- the food was quite good. However, my husband and I almost walked out before ordering anything. He had made a reservation through open table a week before and when we arrived the restaurant was about 1/4 full. Our table was a disappointment as it was very claustrophobic and partially inaccessible. We were told upon our request for a new table that we could not have any of them as they were reserved for tables of four, including one of the three empty booths. We ended up staying, but the empty booth that I had requested was never sat in the 2 hours that we were there. Host and manager were either poorly trained or incompetent, or both. Incompetence."

  • "Peche is a fun bar that pretty much does overpriced food on the side. We went looking for food and while they had one vegetarian option on the menu, the gnocchi was deep fried. Weird. They have an extensive cocktail list and the interior was fun but that was about it. The servers were lovely, but the food was terrible. We had a kale salad which was very ordinary....still hard and crunchy and a burger which was average....the sweet potato gnocchi was deep fried...say no more. Don't waste your money!"

  • "This was my first time at Peche but I will certainly be going back! The pre-Prohibition style (in drink and decor) is both fun and romantic, great for friends or a date. The place is rather loud, so don't expect intimate conversation to work out well. The huge shelves of spirits and old-style lamps (not to mention the bartenders' garb) make for a great ambiance; the staff is friendly and very skilled. The drinks are to die for - the French 77 was especially good. I haven't seen a larger absynthe menu outside of Europe. I had the pommes frites and, while not as good as Hopfield's, the homemade ketchup was unbelievable. I would recommend Peche for groups of friends or couples who like exciting places any day. A little pricey but worth it!!"

  • "It's a cool place, fun atmosphere. Apps and salad (truffle buttermilk dressing!! Yum!)was great! Entree was a bit rich for me (beef cheeks) but I was also really full by then. Great drinks!"

  • "We had a wonderful evening. Drinks were amazing and very extensive. Your staff was so knowledgable about your drink offerings and the menu. We look forward to visiting again."

  • "The only thing French about the restaurant was the expensive prices! The food was just ok, very fatty and heavy. The french fries really killed it for us. Have these people ever eaten real "French" french fries (or pommes frites)? And then, the bill came. Not that we didn't know what to expect, but we now knew that the food was not worth it. On the positive side, the lady who served us was extremely friendly and very nice. The cocktails were tasty."

  • "This is an incredible absinthe bar. Tons of variety and an incredible bar staff. The food is excellent. And the wait staff is moderate. The owner/manager is an incredble service focused kind of guy. Overall, I recommend this awesome French absinthe bar."

  • "A really cool early 20th century style bar runs the length of Pech!, complete with the largest absinthe fountain I have ever seen. The space is casual but sophisticated. The food was inventive and spot-on in terms of preparation. This place is now on my list of must visits when I am in Austin."

  • "Both of us really enjoyed the food at Peché. I had the gnocchi and my husband had the sea scallops. They didn't have a wine list, but did list many interesting cocktails. No prices listed. We each ordered one, and paid $24 for the two! Drinking water with dinner does not say "nice night out" to me, but $12 for a drink is too much."

  • "Love this place. The food was fabulous from start to finish! Love the cocktails! You must try this place."

  • "Most of the food we got just wasn't seasoned well. The drinks are fabulous and the bartenders put on a great show. But then it took 30 minutes to get a second drink and we were done eating before it arrived. But they did comp it."

  • "The food at Peche was excellent, but the real draw is the cocktails. Lots of interesting combinations. Stay away from the absinthe if you don't like really strong drinks. I would definitely come back here if I need to travel to Austin again."

  • "Very nice, trendy place for Valentine's Day dinner or any special occasion. We had reservations, and were seated promptly. Husband recommends the Veal Scallopini--home made pasta was delicious. I had the bouillabaisse--scallops were very tender, lots of clams and mussels, and a rich sauce. I could not finish it, but I couldn't leave it! Waiter found a way to make something for us to bring it home. The drinks menu is impressive, but I don't drink hard liquor so I can't comment on it. We had early dinner, so the noise level was fine for us. It was much busier by the time we left. Would recommend to a friend."

  • "First the good news. The salad was great (shrimp and scallop). We had wine from the list which was fair at best, and I know this place specializes in drinks not wine. What ever you do don't order the $36 rib-eye steak. You get better quality meat at sizzler (yes it was that bad). So tough it was almost inedible. Could barely cut it with the steak knife. That steak choice completely turned us off to any future visit. We knew going in that the menu was a bit strange but decided to give it a try due to some of the reviews here."

  • "I've never had a bad dish or a bad drink here. Their cocktail selection is exceptional and the food is always outstanding. Easily one of my top 5 nicer restaurants in Austin, maybe even top 3. And the bartenders/wait staff go a very long way towards making every experience there enjoyable."

  • "If you're a local or you have guests in town, Peche is not to be missed. They will tailor cocktails to your personal tastes, often coming up with a unique drink made just for you. Be careful with the mussels that you don't embarrass yourself by licking the bowl clean. The menu is just the right length, offering a nice variety of dishes. It isn't so long that you spend forever reading it so you can make your choice and get right back to enjoying your evening. Every entree ordered was cooked perfectly."

  • "The drinks at this place are awesome. They really take care of you and make sure you get a drink you'll love. The food was all amazing as well. We ordered off the daily specials and were not disappointed. We'll definitely be going back."

  • "We had a wonderful evening, but was expecting more of a romantic French bistro style restaurant."

  • "Loved the atmosphere, my waitress was attentive but had a hard time answering questions regarding the menu. I had the grilled cheese which was scrumptious along with the French soup which was a slight disappointment. This place is romantic and has a great bar. I'd like a round 2 to order from the specialty menu."

  • "I love the personalized experience, from helping choose the perfect cocktail for your taste to entree and wine recommendations. The food is expertly prepared, the staff knowledgeable and the old bistro setting very comfortable."

  • "We went on New Year's Eve. Made reservations a week in advance, they called two days before asking for a credit card to keep the reservation and informed they charge $50/person if party does not no show up. It looked extreme but we agreed considering the date. Reservation was at 830. When we got there they sat 4 in a 2x2 table, asked to be changed and they say they can't, however, one hour later restaurant had enough room. Poor logistics when taking reservations I'd say, thy could have distribute the reservations along the night. That killed the mood of the night!!!!! Service was lousy too but I don't expect much on those days! Food was excellent though!"

  • "I took my girlfriend for New Years, great food, not outrageously pricy considering the quality of food. Pretty terrible coffee, but overall a very good dining experience and nice atmosphere."

  • "We got to Austin on NYE and our flight was delayed so we had very little time to get to dinner. We called the restaurant to see if we could push back our reservation a bit and the woman who answered was incredibly rude telling us "if you miss your reservation you miss it". We almost went elsewhere, but decided to give it a shot. Julie our waitress saved the entire night. She was clearly busy (they must have added extra tables- you could hardly move), but she was very attentive and took the time to answer all of our questions. The drinks were good, but the food was great. We ordered the mushrooms (my favorite), beet salad, escargot, Duck, octopus salad (second favorite) and the Tartar. I would recommend eating here, but ask for Julie!"

  • "Booked this restaurant for new years 2014 dinner because of the good reviews and close to my hotel. It was just ok, nothing great. Food selection was limited and some of our food arrived cold (when it should have been hot) Go for cocktails, and skip dinner. The restaurant does have nice ambiance."

  • "From the moment my wife and I walked into Peche, we knew that it was a place that we would like. We met the owner and had a chance to talk to him about the different menu items that were available for that evening. We had duck and it was fabulous. Chef John, who we were following from his time at an another restaurant, showed that he still have exacting standards for his meals and continued to enjoy providing people with outstanding food. Our waitress was friendly, knew the menu and made sure that we always got what we had ordered in a timely manner. Peche is on 4th street and has valet parking which is a huge bonus for us. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone that enjoys great food at reasonable prices."

  • "Peche was the perfect place for a cold, rainy night! Well spiced, divine seafood stew and bone marrow with french fries - favorites of ours, on this menu. Seriously?! Crazy good. The attending staff and a rec from a neighboring table guided us to unique cocktails."

  • "Can't say enough good things about this place. The specialty cocktails are phenomenal and the food lives up to its French pedigree. Can't wait to return to Austin just to go back there!"

  • "I have been here over a dozen times and I think the food is always amazing and super creative. However, this last time we went the service was horrible. Our waiter managed to attend the table of 6 next to us 7 times before picking up out bill after a 45 mins to pay walking past us every time and disregarding out quiet table for two. I should have to do a song and dance and order 15 drinks to receive the same amount of service. This was really off putting and even thought I love peche and can watch from our home, I will not be back any time soon or during the weekend which makes me sad. However, good is great! Just be prepared for a slow and long dinner over the weekend."

  • "All around a great experience. Cocktails were outstanding, service was very good, food was great (Mussels out of this world!). Pretty cramped for seating, though. Next time we go back it would be fun to sit at t he bar and watch the tenders do their magic."

  • "This restaurant isn't on all of Austin's "best of" lists, so my dining companions and I were all pleasantly surprised by how yummy our meals were. Everything was delicious and our waitress was friendly, knowledgable, and made great drink recommendations. The din of the live music playing next door was distracting, but everything else was great. We are sure to be back."
