When you enter this restaurant the most striking is kitchen with fireplaces and warm colors. Good thing is that there is no smell disturbing that usually comes out from the kitchen in many other restaurants. Tables for two people are small and too close to each other, but any way waiter was paying attention and cleaning table was on time as well, we felt attention. Food though was disappointing. I came here to have country style cooked suckling pig and to see what their imagination and take was on rabbit, squid and etc. Lasagna with rabbit- you could hardly say there was any rabbit, since everything was overwhelmed by cheese and wine sauce, even though it came pleasantly sizzling, and was not bad dish at all,but for $26 price one expects better lay out and more rabbit in it. As for suckling pig it was just wrong! what they did with $33 price dish was that it came as two skinny ribs of suckling pig, with literary no meat on it and the most of the meat they have mixed up with potatoes, so basically they served potato salad with suckling pig meat with two bones on it! For that price they should have served better chunk of the suckling pig and may be potato on side. Their wine bottle list was decent with not too pricey good options. May be I was just expecting much more from this type of food, but anyway I would think very hard to go back there again, since it did not come up a cheap meal at all.

I've read some reviews on here complaining about an odd service experience or a soggy pizza, etc, but honestly, we did not find that to the case. I was with a party of 6 for an early dinner on a Saturday evening and things could not go smoother. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable, attentive, friendly and available. We had a little dust up at the beginning with table selection, but it was quickly cleared up. The food was truly outstanding in every way. All members of our party's dishes were fabulous. If I were to ding anything, it would be the prices. All in we were about $100/person, which I know for the city isn't necessarily bad, but its not like you're going every weekend for that. For a nice occasion, its a great choice. Atmosphere is really beautiful, tables aren't rammed too close to each other. Just a really nice night out in the city.

I came here with 3 of my friends who are very picky and hard to please, both food and ambiance. I was very nervous since this was my choice. Loved the rustic interiors. The food and the presentation were great. This goes for all we've ordered. Waiter helpfull but not intrusive. If you are looking for excellent and not ordinary italian food in a a very nice setting, Peasant is the place.

Finally got a reservation and it was well worth the wait. Was lucky to get the last pigs head of the evening split for appetizer for two. Perfectly cooked, and the sauce and spicing was perfect. I followed that up with Porchetta and the wife had Lamb...both were perfectly served. A few glasses of Merlot and ending with some White Chocolate bread pudding made for a perfect evening. Great atmosphere and service was excellent.

The food was amazing. The space beautiful and filled with beautiful people. However, it was so freaking loud that I could not hear my friend across the take and had to have the waiter tell me the specials in my ear. Which was fine because he was very cute! However, I would never be able to bring my husband here because he truly hates loud places to eat in NYC. Most of them are extremely loud. There should be a way to have a restaurant this amazing be even more amazing by doing something about the noise level. We ate there on a Monday night around 9 pm.

Peasant is a consistently delicious, warm, special restaurant. I have never been disappointed by the service, ambiance or food. Enjoyed a delicious special (razor back clams and pumpkin risotto) and mainstays like the wild boar ragu and leg of lamb. You can always rely on Peasant. Also check out their sister restaurant, Bacaro, for a hidden Venetian gem farther south into Chinatown/LES.

We were in the city for the day in lower Manhattan. We decided to try a new restaurant in Nolita, Peasant. I had see it reviewed by Mike Colamito on his television show. We are very happy that we did. The food was excellent. Everything about the restaurant was above average. It had a rustic décor with exposed brick walls. I found myself staring into the kitchen to see the chefs prepare the various orders in the brick ovens that they prepare most of the food in. It was a very enjoyable experience. I will definitely go back.

Acoustics in restaurants can we adjusted to bring the noise level down to a dull roar at least. On the Friday night we dined at Peasant it was too loud to have a conversation across a two person table. Sitting opposite my husband with the waiter behind him I could not hear the specials or anything else the waiter said. Bocconcini and my husband's entree were delicious; my pasta with ragu was boring - nearly no ragu, poor flavor and many little bones. Service varied - we were seated right away, the waiter appropriately attentive though our dinner seemed a bit rushed; oddly our water glasses were refilled with tap water even though we were drinking sparkling

My first meal at Peasant was great. We shared the pizza appetizer and fennel salad - the pizza was fantastic! Not to mention the great bread / ricotta cheese as a pre-appretizer. We each had fish which was very good. The sea bream was very aromatic with herbs (a little too much perhaps?) and comes whole but the waiter took back the fish and filleted it for me (still, there remained a number of bones). Noise level was fine until a very large party sat next to us and changed the dynamics. Our waiter was really pleasant and receptive but got busy towards the end of our meal. All in all, a good experience.

The food here is hands down terrific. Any pasta dish is spectacular -- especially the daily specials, white truffle sauce, anything with mushrooms, and the gnocchi is outstanding. Food is very, very fresh. Our server was great -- very helpful and made excellent suggestions -- the bread pudding for dessert was really out of sight. Only reason not given outstanding all around is that pig dish not what person expected and veal chop was too rare. service got a bit slow as Sat night dinner crowd grew. but we were a large party taken promptly at 7:30 reservation time and no one rushed us at all. Go and enjoy. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes good Italian food and interesting dishes.

Positives - really great food and all cooked using no electricity! All the food is cooked in wooden ovens, the veg is grown by the chef and the food is really fresh. Italian wine was very nice too and the atmosphere was really nice and rustic. Quite a small menu so all the food was cooked exceptionally well. Negatives - very noisy so can be difficult to hear. Can be quite plain as most dishes are served on they're own - i.e. fish is served on its own with nothing else.

I like Peasant; this was my second time going. I love the look and feel of the restaurant and the service has been excellent both times. The food, in my opinion, is just OK. To be fair, I've gotten much more critical living in NYC because of all of the tremendous restaurants. If you're going Italian, there are just so many places that are terrific that you don't have to go to Peasant. But you will get pretty solid food with a good experience.

The worst service I have ever had at a restaurant in New York City. First time I've gotten up and walked out. The service, simply put, was atrocious. It took 20 minutes just to receive our cocktails. Server was nowhere to be found. When she finally checked with the bar and our cocktails came out we got a lame excuse from the manager - "bartender ran out of glassware." That's a new one. Then, our starters simply never arrived. After 30 minutes of waiting and trying to flag down our server the manager came over again and apologized for "getting it wrong again". Just walked out at that point. Absolute disaster. If I had the server's name, I'd warn you against getting seated in her section. But I'm sure the food is wonderful.

I dine in New York a lot (especially downtown) and was looking forward to this place given the reviews.Every item we ordered was disappointing and bad. The razor clam appetizer special was filled with grit. The much vaunted sucking pig was mostly dessicated. A shrimp/pasta special was filled with only shrimp shells for flavoring, but no shrimp. I will never go here again and cannot recommend this place. Want good Italian in the same neighborhood? Go to Osteria Morini instead.

    1. Hostess was rude - I think that's the opposite of the job description. 2. Octopus was tough and chewy (flavor and seasoning were spot on) 3. Pizza was ok - had the chilie pizza and the heat was great but the cheese was bland. 4. Tripe was well prepared and the sauce was great. 5. My lamb (ordered medium rare) was served medium well. 6. Service - while friendly was rushed as though they had too much to cover or wanted to get us out. So - would not recommend based on this one trip. Plenty of other places in the area.

To start, I loved the restaurant's great atmosphere. I went with the adorable waiter's rec and I should not have. The spaghetti with some kind of odd shrimp I do not recall the name of...added flavor but were not edible and there were tons of them that we couldn't eat cause they have no meat and are spikey. pasta with sea urchin was delicious. The skate my husband had was fabulous. special whole branzino was good but full of bones even after the waiter filleted it for us. We ordered too many vegetables, so lots left over. One order would have been enough for the table of 4. Having said all that, I would return to Peasant for sure!

Our second dining experience at Peasant was every bit a pleasant as our first. Reservation was at 7:30 and we were 15 minutes late due to our unfamiliarity with the NYC subway system. No problem in being seated immediately and the hostess was pleased that I apologized for being late! We had the Risotto and the Pig (suckling pig with Fingerling Potatoes) and they were wonderful. The Frittata appetizer was awesome and our bottle of wine served us well. Dessert was the Fruit Pie special with Hazelnut Gelato. Overall, a wonderful meal in a setting with ambiance, including the aroma of an open fire (for the Pig).

We had a friend come in from SF and needed a fun restaurant close to our apartment where we could splurge on wine and delicious food. We had two appetizers, entrees each and two bottles of wine for a super reasonable price! The bread with ricotta for the table was so so tasty I almost filled up on that alone. The swordfish was light and delightful and was very fresh, and the rabbit lasagna was superrr rich. I probably wouldn't order just that because of the heaviness of the dish - but it was perfect to split! The waiter was also very helpful in selecting wine for the table. Would love to go back!

The pizza here was really good, but the main dishes were not at all good, and certainly not worth the money. I had the bistecca alla fiorentina, and it was not trimmed well (or at all), lacked flavor, and was not cooked like a fiorentina should be (i.e. black and blue). The service was inattentive, cold, and not very helpful. The red wine was served warm. I would not return to this place.
