Diner Reviews
  • "We usually eat meat here. This time, lovely tuna atop beans and fennel. Whole delicious Branzino. Polenta so good we ordered a second. Broccoli Rabe so bitter that we jumped for joy."

  • "The lamb and gnocchi were incredible. Only dissatisfaction comes from the bussers and staff being way too pushy with clearing dishes to the point where if I put down my fork to take a sip of wine I would be asked if I was finished. Felt as it was a coordinated effort to get tables turned faster from management. Please find way to relax a bit."

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. My daughters wanted a special dinner before leaving for college and this came to mind. The food is so different and the service was wonderful."

  • "Food was very average. Was not worth the hype I had heard. Salad was fresh and vibrant. I had spaghetti vongole. Was too garlicky and Manila clams just don't do the trick on this dish."

  • "Great Italian food prepared and served with a lot of love. Ingredients are organic and the recipes are creative but still anchored in traditional tastes. Portions are generous so don't over-order. Wine list is excellent though on the dearer side."

  • "Peasant is lovely, but there's a dissonance between the old world, candle lit rustic atmosphere and "Play that Funky Music White Boy" playing really loud. Dreadful 70's music all night long. Oddly, the wait staff seemed to not like each other (but were fine with customers). Something just wasn't right -- maybe front of house?"

  • "Gnoggi was amazing. Great portions. The Mozzarella was farm fresh."

  • "An excellent dining experience. Great food, wine and ambiance. Service great as well. Friendly, efficient and professional."

  • "Went back on the 2nd time to feed off my craving for their dishes. Quite a number of notable dishes! Love. BUT! Their sardines w/ capers appetizer and sea urchin pasta entree tasted inconsistent from my first visit. Could be the produce quality - May varies daily due to the catch from the sea, perhaps?"

  • "We went to Peasant with great anticipation for the Bistecca Fiorentina. It was under-seasoned, charred at one corner, and gray at the surface. I was disappointed. The suckling pig was tasty, but the rest of the food decidedly average - definitely not worth the $200 bill for a two-course meal for two."

  • "Had an excellent Italian culinary experience that will peak my interest to come back for brunch or lunch as well"

  • "We love peasant, especially the razor clams, uni pasta, but the squab is way too hard to chew or tear off from the bone. I hope it was an accident because I was told the squab was the chef's favorite. Would definitely like to come back for the delicious food, but not sure would try squab again."

  • "Went here for anniversary dinner. The decor and the tall, handsome Italian servers immediately invokes a sense of authenticity. I've eaten in more than a couple restaurants just like this in and around Rome. While not cheap, the portions are appropriate for the prices and the food was excellent. Asparagi app, pasta with sardines, lamb, and the whole orata were fabulous, though the dish used for the app was a tad unwieldy. The dishes are rustic and simple, as they should be, and the dessert we shared, a cassata, while lacking in the dried fruit that usually characterizes the dish, was still delicious. Would definitely go back."

  • "Very good food. Great ambience. Nice space - doesn't feel like everyone is packed in. Would highly recommend."

  • "Food was very good but not perfect. There was a bit of sand in the razor clams and I hit a tiny bone fragment in the rabbit lasagna. However, the flavors of both were delicious and I enjoyed the pasta with sardines very much, though I would have preferred more sardines. One thing I did not appreciate was having an employee's young daughter run back and forth from the kitchen to the bar where she was being looked after, thus the two stars for ambience. Its risky enough when dining that patrons may have a rambunctious child; totally unacceptable when the responsible party is an employee or worse, the owner."

  • "Food was great as always. Large group (7) so we got to try 14+ dishes. Food never disappoints and is consistent as ever. Service was spotty and our waiter was very pushy and bordered on bothersome at times. Someone should inform the restaurant it's illegal to add gratuity automatically as they still seem to believe there's no fault with it. Good way to get sued. Otherwise, food stands far above the service. Far too many restaurants in NY.."

  • "Good food - really interesting wine list. Tables small, slanted and crowded (maybe too rustic?). Noise level started at manageable, but rose as the evening progressed."

  • "I brought my out-of-town mother and cousin here early on a Tuesday evening, having not been for a few years. I had forgotten how different the upstairs is from the downstairs. Downstairs is dark, woodsy and cosy. Upstairs is open, noisy, but spacious. The food was very good. We loved the cuttlefish and pork liver best. Biggest complaint: my mother loves lamb and hates radicchio. They refused to substitute the radicchio for ANY other vegetable. Given it was early, I was a little annoyed by this lack of customer service. It would not have been a big deal to accommodate this kind of request and it left a bad taste in her mouth. Food is still fabulous. Just go with very flexible eaters."

  • "Was visiting NYC and received a recommendation to have dinner at Peasant. The service is impeccable and the food was very good. We had an asparagus appetizer that was delicious. My dinner partner's Skate with lemon, wine & capers just melted in your mouth. My slices of lamb on polenta were good, but a few pieces over cooked. My only complaint was that it was so loud in there that we literally had to yell to speak to each other."

  • "Food was tasty but nothing outstanding. Cocktails were sub par. Probably wouldn't go back intentionally, but wouldn't discourage anyone from it either. Plenty of better Italian places out there though."

  • "I am a chef and this was the best meal I have had in NYC this trip."

  • "This was our third visit to Peasant. We have never had an off night at this restaurant. Food and service is outstanding. And, we rarely eat dessert when we go out to dinner, but missing dessert at Peasant would be a crime. Both tables adjoining ours leaned in to inquire about our heavenly peach pie. Amazing!"

  • "Food was great and generous portions. Skate was fantastic as was the sausage pizza. Service was attentive but not overbearing."

  • "My son and I had a fabulous meal at the Peasant. Our food was delicious, but our service was disappointing. I had not seen my son for over 7 months, and we had lots to talk about. Our waiter was rushing us so he could turn his table. To me, that is absolutely the worst thing a restaurant can allow to ruin a reputation."

  • "Expected to find typical Italian cuisine and was surprised to see rabbit and the special being Pigs Head... However we did find something on the menu veal chop for me and clams for him..DELICIOUS.. And the pizza appetizers just like Italy!!"

  • "and my family in Peasant. The atmosphere is very good and i liked the kitchen very much. The foods very delicious as we ordered lamb chicken a pizza and a pasta seperately. But the service was quite rude that hey did not even asked about if are fine with our meals. So food and atmosphere was great but not sure about service!"

  • "We had a great time. The dining room allows diners to see into the kitchen with the wood burning stoves, roast pig on the spit, etc. all accented by natural light via skylight. Tried razor clams for the first time which were perfectly done. Also would recommend the suckling pig and the lamb."

  • "Everything about this place was charming. The staff, mostly with authentic Italian accents were delightful and knowledgeable. The food unique and divine! Everyone was happy with their selections from appetizers to desserts. A must when visiting NYC."

  • "Specializing on farm fresh cuts of meat and vegetables this restaurant is a choice pic kampung foodies"
    Dined on 6/22/2014
  • "Food was very good; our waitress (Allie) was the greatest ever; the noise level of the room makes conversation too great a challenge: it's not that they blast music here, it's the acoustics of the room. I'd love to come back but I won't."

  • "We had never been to Peasant and had an amazing evening. Food was delicious and the place was jumping. They were very busy but certainly went out of their way to make our evening memorable."

  • "Lovely restaurant with attentive staff: however, the food verged on the ho hum at our early sitting on 9 June. With few other diners to attend to, I couldn't see any reason why my first course of (very) spicy baby octopus should have had to engage every tooth I possess to eat it. A main of swordfish was better. It was cooked lightly, but unevenly, so that one end was rarer than the other. The suckling pig started well but the creamy sauce in which it had been submerged became rich after a while and compared poorly with variations on this I've had in Spain and England. I wouldn't want to overstate the downside: we still had a nice time. I just wish I'd had a pizza instead..."

  • "I go to this place very often.. I love Elizabeth St. area and this is one of the cozy places in the neighborhood. There's an actual brick oven, so their pizzas are delicious. Staff is very knowledgeable and the food is very authentic Italian."

  • "I took my daughter here during a girl's weekend trip to NYC. This was our third time dining here. We had excellent service and some of the best red wine I've ever had. The Bocconcini was incredible."

  • "We had heard about Peasant for a few years but finally got around to try it. Not knowing what to expect , we were blown away at how good it was. Our server was terrific-patient, knowledgeable, and helpful. All dishes were prepared perfectly the way we requested. We will be returning soon."

  • "My experience at Peasant was great! The burrata, octopus, asparagus (this especially was divine) and margarita pizza appetizers were all excellent. Flavorful, good size portions and perfect for sharing with a group of 4. I had the skate for my main and one of my dining partners shared tastes of her gnocchi, so I was stuffed and happy by the end. My only suggestion is, don't let your server convince you that you need sides as well. We had string beans and broccoli rab and we certainly didn't need the extras. We opted out of desert this time but the Merlot was a perfect pairing for our meal. "

  • "This was the second time I have been to Peasant. The first was about two years ago and I was so impressed. My husband and I claimed we had found "our place" in NYC. We haven't had the chance to go back, unfortunately. I went with a friend this time and was thrilled to have had the same fantastic experience. The food was amazing, the service was great. And the price is totally reasonable, even with a mid-range bottle of wine. My neighbors were a little close to me for my preference, but it was no worse than most restaurants in NYC and I've experienced worse--I wasn't completely distracted by their conversations. I would highly recommend Peasant to anyone and will be returning. "

  • "The food was pretty solid, not overwhelming. The service was great and the reasonable price made up for what the food lacked. I don't think I would go back, but I wouldn't avoid it."

  • "We always eat at Peasant when we visit NYC. As usual the food was excellent. The tagliatteli with veal ragu in a light creamy tomato sauce was delicious, as was the rucola salad. Desserts however were a bit of a disappointment. Overall a meal to enjoy. We will return."
