I dine in New York a lot (especially downtown) and was looking forward to this place given the reviews.Every item we ordered was disappointing and bad. The razor clam appetizer special was filled with grit. The much vaunted sucking pig was mostly dessicated. A shrimp/pasta special was filled with only shrimp shells for flavoring, but no shrimp. I will never go here again and cannot recommend this place. Want good Italian in the same neighborhood? Go to Osteria Morini instead.

    1. Hostess was rude - I think that's the opposite of the job description. 2. Octopus was tough and chewy (flavor and seasoning were spot on) 3. Pizza was ok - had the chilie pizza and the heat was great but the cheese was bland. 4. Tripe was well prepared and the sauce was great. 5. My lamb (ordered medium rare) was served medium well. 6. Service - while friendly was rushed as though they had too much to cover or wanted to get us out. So - would not recommend based on this one trip. Plenty of other places in the area.

Thie menu looked great, though I would say half of what we ordered was excellent and the other half was mediocre. If you k now what to be ordering here be prepared for a great meal, if not I would say average.

To start, I loved the restaurant's great atmosphere. I went with the adorable waiter's rec and I should not have. The spaghetti with some kind of odd shrimp I do not recall the name of...added flavor but were not edible and there were tons of them that we couldn't eat cause they have no meat and are spikey. pasta with sea urchin was delicious. The skate my husband had was fabulous. special whole branzino was good but full of bones even after the waiter filleted it for us. We ordered too many vegetables, so lots left over. One order would have been enough for the table of 4. Having said all that, I would return to Peasant for sure!

Our second dining experience at Peasant was every bit a pleasant as our first. Reservation was at 7:30 and we were 15 minutes late due to our unfamiliarity with the NYC subway system. No problem in being seated immediately and the hostess was pleased that I apologized for being late! We had the Risotto and the Pig (suckling pig with Fingerling Potatoes) and they were wonderful. The Frittata appetizer was awesome and our bottle of wine served us well. Dessert was the Fruit Pie special with Hazelnut Gelato. Overall, a wonderful meal in a setting with ambiance, including the aroma of an open fire (for the Pig).

We had a friend come in from SF and needed a fun restaurant close to our apartment where we could splurge on wine and delicious food. We had two appetizers, entrees each and two bottles of wine for a super reasonable price! The bread with ricotta for the table was so so tasty I almost filled up on that alone. The swordfish was light and delightful and was very fresh, and the rabbit lasagna was superrr rich. I probably wouldn't order just that because of the heaviness of the dish - but it was perfect to split! The waiter was also very helpful in selecting wine for the table. Would love to go back!

This was our first time at Peasant and we were quite happy with our experience. My husband had the suckling pig - excellent - and I had the lamb. Both were very good and savoury plates. The noise level is energetic but we still could keep a resonable tone for conversation. Prices are average with this kind of quality of food.

The pizza here was really good, but the main dishes were not at all good, and certainly not worth the money. I had the bistecca alla fiorentina, and it was not trimmed well (or at all), lacked flavor, and was not cooked like a fiorentina should be (i.e. black and blue). The service was inattentive, cold, and not very helpful. The red wine was served warm. I would not return to this place.

Peasant serves up delicious food! I had the suckling pig or roasted pork and at first I was blown away that there was only one small piece of meat on top! Luckily it was just one piece of crunchy skin and there was more meat mixed in. The food was good. So flavorful, the potatoes were delicious and the entire dish was tied together very well. The bread is super tasty too!

The "Peasant" serves special Italian food, not only the everyday Pasta & Pizza stuff. All meals are cooked in an original open Italian kitchen without electricity, so that's very authentic. Staff is friendly and helpful, the ambiente is cozy, though it is very noisy.

It's not the restaurant it once was. No real specials to speak of anymore, The $31 suckling pig entree, their hallmark, would fit under a large coffeecup -- including the potatoes. A very sad empty plate. Still tasty but tiny. Not heading back. Sad, used to be one of my favorite NYC restaurants.

The lamb and gnocchi were incredible. Only dissatisfaction comes from the bussers and staff being way too pushy with clearing dishes to the point where if I put down my fork to take a sip of wine I would be asked if I was finished. Felt as it was a coordinated effort to get tables turned faster from management. Please find way to relax a bit.

Peasant is lovely, but there's a dissonance between the old world, candle lit rustic atmosphere and "Play that Funky Music White Boy" playing really loud. Dreadful 70's music all night long. Oddly, the wait staff seemed to not like each other (but were fine with customers). Something just wasn't right -- maybe front of house?

Went back on the 2nd time to feed off my craving for their dishes. Quite a number of notable dishes! Love. BUT! Their sardines w/ capers appetizer and sea urchin pasta entree tasted inconsistent from my first visit. Could be the produce quality - May varies daily due to the catch from the sea, perhaps?

We went to Peasant with great anticipation for the Bistecca Fiorentina. It was under-seasoned, charred at one corner, and gray at the surface. I was disappointed. The suckling pig was tasty, but the rest of the food decidedly average - definitely not worth the $200 bill for a two-course meal for two.

Went here for anniversary dinner. The decor and the tall, handsome Italian servers immediately invokes a sense of authenticity. I've eaten in more than a couple restaurants just like this in and around Rome. While not cheap, the portions are appropriate for the prices and the food was excellent. Asparagi app, pasta with sardines, lamb, and the whole orata were fabulous, though the dish used for the app was a tad unwieldy. The dishes are rustic and simple, as they should be, and the dessert we shared, a cassata, while lacking in the dried fruit that usually characterizes the dish, was still delicious. Would definitely go back.

Food was very good but not perfect. There was a bit of sand in the razor clams and I hit a tiny bone fragment in the rabbit lasagna. However, the flavors of both were delicious and I enjoyed the pasta with sardines very much, though I would have preferred more sardines. One thing I did not appreciate was having an employee's young daughter run back and forth from the kitchen to the bar where she was being looked after, thus the two stars for ambience. Its risky enough when dining that patrons may have a rambunctious child; totally unacceptable when the responsible party is an employee or worse, the owner.

Food was great as always. Large group (7) so we got to try 14+ dishes. Food never disappoints and is consistent as ever. Service was spotty and our waiter was very pushy and bordered on bothersome at times. Someone should inform the restaurant it's illegal to add gratuity automatically as they still seem to believe there's no fault with it. Good way to get sued. Otherwise, food stands far above the service. Far too many restaurants in NY..

I brought my out-of-town mother and cousin here early on a Tuesday evening, having not been for a few years. I had forgotten how different the upstairs is from the downstairs. Downstairs is dark, woodsy and cosy. Upstairs is open, noisy, but spacious. The food was very good. We loved the cuttlefish and pork liver best. Biggest complaint: my mother loves lamb and hates radicchio. They refused to substitute the radicchio for ANY other vegetable. Given it was early, I was a little annoyed by this lack of customer service. It would not have been a big deal to accommodate this kind of request and it left a bad taste in her mouth. Food is still fabulous. Just go with very flexible eaters.

Was visiting NYC and received a recommendation to have dinner at Peasant. The service is impeccable and the food was very good. We had an asparagus appetizer that was delicious. My dinner partner's Skate with lemon, wine & capers just melted in your mouth. My slices of lamb on polenta were good, but a few pieces over cooked. My only complaint was that it was so loud in there that we literally had to yell to speak to each other.
