Diner Reviews
  • "Had a very enjoyable first dining experience. The service was fantastic. General manager came over to our table just to check in and help us choose some wine to accompany our meal. The food was flavourful, presented beautifully and generous in portion size. The ambiance in the restaurant is charming and comfortable. We will definitely be going back for seconds."

  • "We were seated at a table tucked behind the host stand which wasn't very romantic. I ordered gnocchi. It was delicious but such a small portion, I was still hungry after. He had the half chicken. It was not visually appealing as it was all the same beige colour on the plate. His beer was almost room temperature."

  • "Ate here a couple of years ago and enjoyed it so thought I would return-- even better!"

  • "I've been to Peasant Cookery several times and thought I should take a moment to review! The first time I went was with a group of friends, some of which are foodies, some of which are just plain old picky eaters. Everyone was delighted with their meals. I've since gone back a few times on Wednesday nights for "buck a shuck" oyster nights, staggering our dozen oysters with the charcuterie platter and the beef tartar. The mussels are fresh (smallish), sweet and delicious. We love the tourtiere and the gnocchi. The atmosphere is great, with attentive and knowledgeable (fun and friendly) staff. A gem!"

  • "We brought a guest from out of town to eat here, and all of us were impressed with the food and service. Presentation was very good, and our dishes were tasty and cooked perfectly. Excellent service-knowledgeable and friendly!!"

  • "I was embarrassed because I the one who suggested this restaurant and everyone's food was awful and expensive. The steak was chewy and gristly, the pickerel was like dry tasteless cardboard.."

  • "First time going to Peasant Cookery. Food was very good, service was so-so. Took 20 minutes for someone to take our drink order. Guess servers all thought we were part of someone else's section. Server proceeded to always place food and drinks in front of the wrong person. When server was told we were in a bit of a rush, they left the bill but then disappeared for another ten minutes. We had to go to the front to pay and then hunt someone down to get our coats. I hear this isn't typical service at Peasant and that it is generally much better. Was disappointed though. Would give it another try in the future."

  • "Wonderful experience...excellent food, great service, and that little bit extra. Thanks to Lisa, I was able to snag the handicapped parking spot close to the restaurant and make the experience so much easier and better for me and my parents. Very much appreciated."

  • "The food was really great, the cheese selections especially! The atmosphere was really elegant without making me feel out of place for wearing jeans. My only complaint was the noise level. The restaurant was barely half full and we actually had to shout to hear one another over other patrons talking. No one at my table even knew there was background music on until we left because the chatter was so loud. They definitely need something to absorb the sound a bit more, but other than that it was a great experience. Would definitely go back."

  • "Our server was wonderful. She was very thoughtful and congenial without being overbearing. The food was outstanding. The bread was fresh, flavorful and light. The chicken livers were savory and done perfectly. The fish was fresh tasting and the tourtiere was the ultimate in comfort food. The no bake goat cheesecake was a perfect complement to an ultimate cold weather meal( we walked 15 minutes to get there, increasing our appetite). We love the atmosphere and the heater beneath the window was adjusted to make the dining experience most comfortable. The hostess was very friendly and offered us suggestions for our return to our hotel."

  • "Enjoyed as always. I have never been disappointed by a dining experience there. The Ahi Tuna on lentils with the olive tampenade was extraordinary. The tourtiere never disappoints - it is a mountain of a meal! The staff is always welcoming and the atmosphere always comfortable. Don't pass on the maple sugar pie - I don't ordinarily order dessert but as we had time to pass before theater, thought why not. Divine, and of course no calories there!!!"

  • "We have dined at the Peasant Eatery several times and have always had a good dining experience. Love the decor and the food is well prepared. It would be nice if the menu had a larger selection.-especially the appetizers. The hostess and bar staff were friendly and attentive to our needs. They make a solid effort to make a personal connection. I certainly will be going back!"

  • "We took friends, who have traveled extensively in France and who KNOW GOOD FOOD AND WINE to PC - it was their first time and they loved it (as do we). Consistently excellent food, interesting specials, great service, lovely decor, superb wine list. It was nice and quiet when we arrived, got a little noisy later as the restaurant filled up, but we could still carry on a conversation without having to shout. We'll be back- again and again......"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Peasant Cookery. The host greeted us warmly, and from there the service was pleasant, informed and provided just the right amount of attention. The food was superb--we had the short rib and half -chicken, with the charcuterie appetizer to start. All expertly prepared. Dessert was a delicious duo of goat cheese mousse and maple sugar pie. We make it a point to visit Peasant Cookery at least one or twice a year, and we are never disappointed."

  • "Our party of four were first time visitors to the Peasant Cookery. We had an excellent evening with great food and attentive service. Our only complaint was that some of the beer that was served was not ice-cold."

  • "The food was excellent, recommend the pork chops, steak, beet/goat cheese salad, french onion soup & maple sugar pie. It was so cold however, some of us had to keep our sweaters & coats on! Not the most relaxing atmosphere."

  • "Excellent solo-dining experience for my first visit to Winnipeg. Enjoyed the local pickerel and a refreshing old-fashioned. Try the house version if you like things tart."

  • "We had a lovely time! Very nice service and good food, as we were expecting. The only downside for me was that I was sitting facing toward a utility area which was less than great, and which I mention only because I've dined at PC several times and know that many other locations are much nicer. The restaurant certainly wasn't so busy that the two of us couldn't have been allocated a slightly nicer, perhaps even bigger table ... Nevertheless, a lovely evening celebrating Christmas early with a long-standing friend ..."

  • "We ate here for the first time about a year ago. The food at that time was great and still is. Our server a year ago was not. This visit was a huge improvement!! Service was great. Proper pace for food delivery and was never ignored and had time for dessert before heading to the WSO. Spoke to manager on our way out about previous visit. He felt sure that our issues a year ago were addressed. I concur! Definitely a great restaurant! The fact they take customer comments seriously is commendable!"

  • "Went with a small group to the peasant cookery and all of us had excellent meals. The atmosphere made it perfect for relaxing and talking. We did not feel rushed at all and stayed for quite a while. The service was superb. The chef made fantastic meals for us and we will go back!"

  • "I went because my bf has a craving for it, he said the food was always great there. He had the half chicken and it was horrible, it was WAY too citrusy. It tasted like someone had dunked it in lemon juice numerous times. I ordered the pork chop that was on the menu, I was unimpressed to find out it wasn't the 22 dollar pork chop but was actually a special night and it was actually $28, the server never mentioned this to me until the food was about to come out, after I had ordered it. It was a HUGE piece of pork, didn't taste good, so it really was a waste and the brussel sprouts were horrible. The good thing was the environment, and the wine was great. I doubt I'll go back again, if I want to spend 100-150, I would go somewhere else."

  • "This restaurant was comfortable, affordable and the food was outstanding. The waiter was knowledgable and pleasant. Service was quick. Food arrived in a very I timely matter. Would be great for business lunches. Disappointed that some of the menu items were not available and no chef special. We enjoyed a heathly serving go quiche and greens. My daughter was very pleases with the gnocchi . The maple tart with goat cheese on top was a great combination."

  • "We arrived 30 minutes early but were able to be accommodated immediately. We did have to wait for over 1 hour for our entree tho. Once it arrived it was very good and the portions were generous. In the meantime, we shared the chicken livers. Awesome!! I could have made a meal of just them. We were a group of 2 but there were 2 or 3 large groups around us and we were still able to carry on a conversation without feeling like we were shouting. Waiter was very personable and helpful, knew the menu well and was able to describe the dishes in a way we could understand. He was able to suggest that changing a side dish as we asked would not work with the dish and suggested something that worked better. We would definitely go back again"

  • "Consistently high quality. They don't pretend to be all things to all people. If you want the finest in French country food -- simple, but delicious -- this is the place to go. Staff are knowledgable, friendly, engaged and professional. Fantastic for a lunch or dinner of any sort, business, casual, or groups. Not cheap, but definitely not over-priced."

  • "As always we enjoyed our pre-theater dinner at Peasant Cookery. The staff is always friendly and helpful. It is nice also that the menu does not remain the same and there is always a new treat to try. As regular diners there, the innovative menu, food quality, and friendly service keep us returning. We fondly call it "our place!""

  • "The food is consistently very good to outstanding and the service is always excellent - staff are thoughtful without being intrusive. The wine selection is very good and staff are knowledgeable regarding grape varieties and what will make a great accompaniment to the meal. I look forward to the return of the boeuf bourguignon, which is my all-time favourite. The bar is a great place to unwind while waiting for your table if you arrive early. Always great energy in the restaurant and bar. One of my top five Winnipeg restaurants!"

  • "Went to Peasant Cookery for my birthday recently with the girlfriend. After reviewing the menu, the server explained the specials influencing my date to order the steak, medium rare. It came back overcooked - which can happen. But the bigger issue for us was that the steak was priced much higher than the rest of the menu items and we weren't warned of this when told about the specials. That came as an unpleasant surprise. One other issue was that my date is a bit lactose int. We ordered the cannoli for dessert, which is normally filled with cream but instead had ice cream in it. We weren't advised of this so she wasn't able to have the dessert."

  • "I took my boyfriend to the Peasant Cookery for his very first time. We were celebrating his new job. I had been to Peasant Cookery once before, and I knew I had to bring him with me next time. The entire evening was wonderful. The menu is not very large, but the food they do have is enough to not make you want anything more. We started off with sharing mussels and Frites and the onion soup. Both were to die for; the the cream the mussels were swimming in was sooo delicious. I want to the drink it out of the bowl (gross I know) - but that's usally a good sign ha ha. For our main course I had the beef ribs with masheh polenta. Boyfriend had the gnocchi - he wasn't too thrilled with it. Lacked flavour. Stephen was a great waiter."
