A word from Pearl Tavern
The revival of the All American Oyster bar arrives through Pearl Tavern on the banks of the Chicago River. Restaurant developer Adolfo Garcia is enthusiastic about venturing on his own with the inception of Pearl Tavern. It has been a great aspiration of his to develop such a concept, in a historical location that will revive the spirit of one of the oldest taverns in the loop, Coogan's Riverside Saloon. He is hoping to reflect the landscape of the new American table by celebrating the sharing experience with a perfect balance of Old World oyster bar and New World seafood delicacies. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Quality of food was great but was so overpowered by the extremely noisy ambience. Maybe padding the ceilings or having something to absorb sound would be helpful. Also, having made a reservation, we would be expected to sit at a table, not at the oyster bar. The service needs work as there was too much discussion from the oyster chucker which we couldn't even hear what he was saying over the deafening room noise. Could also never find our waiter and brought us a glass of Pelligrino when we asked for a large bottle. It's a shame because thee food was great but service issues and noise really were tough to overlook."

  • "I was expecting something special with great oysters & seafood. Well . . . the oysters I won't be going back for ; P nor the fishy smelling lobster roll or bland fish tacos. Do yourself a favor and spend the same amount over at GT Oyster and have a 10 times better experience!"

  • "Love this place. Tried the shrimp chowder, delish. I have yet to bring anyone here who didn't clean their plates! Staff is great, menu is nicely curated. All around go-to."

  • "Staff knew just what to recommend, was attentive and added to the energy of the evening. Every dish was fantastic! Fresh and exciting flavor combinations in the small plates! The salad was tossed with just the right amount of dressing - light enough to enhance the flavor, but not drenched - just perfect! They are still working on building out their dessert menu, but who needs it after such a great meal!"

  • "Oyster & Seafood in the former Coogan's space. Very light & airy with good fish & chips and seafood tacos"

  • "Great oysters, good drinks, good service. Great place to have my birthday dinner. I'll be back."

  • "Good food, service a bit slow (bar) but noise level is way to high for conversation!"

  • "The front is dominated by a lively bar scene. Nice selection of unique cocktails, that the bartenders take great pride in making. The wine list if decent but a little pricy. Don't be afraid to order from the beginning of the wine list, there is a great muscadet that goes really well with oysters. There is a slightly quieter area in back where we had a nice selection of oysters. The rest of the menu is fairly brief."

  • "Aviations to start (Gin, crème de violette, lemon) - my new favorite drink. Our party had fluke ceviche, tuna tartar - rich, creamy, and delicious, fish tacos, and the lobster roll. The food was fresh and flavorful. Our waitress, Rachel, took wonderful care of us. And the chef, Chris Lorenz, was very gracious and welcoming. Our new favorite restaurant in Chicago."

  • "This place is really all about the oysters and other shellfish. Everything is fresh and tasty and there are a lot of interesting cocktails on the menu."

  • "The food and service was superb! The passion of each dish is apparent and the creativity of the flavors are out of this world. I can't believe how young those chefs are!"

  • "Nice bar. Average seafood. Had the lobster roll....meh. Only place to get a truly good one is back in Rhode Island! This place is still the old Coogan's to me. I'll go back for a drink at the bar - not the food."

  • "Effingham oysters were very large and meaty and tasted great. I tried the nicoise sald b/c i hadn't had that there before and while very good, i almost wish i just got all oysters for lunch. Service was cheerie and accommodating per usual. Really enjoy eating lunch here."

  • "Have been obsessed with the lobster roll (no bread) since the place opened. I finally tried something new this time, the soup special of the day, and the shrimp salad. Totally worth it, loved both. Couldn't be happier this place is here. I need a frequent diner card!"

  • "Little portion & high price. Super noise w/ loud music & can't carry a conversation. Limited choices on the menu."

  • "Oysters were good, tuna tartare was great, wasn't a fan of the seviche. Server was a little agressive but nice ambience, cool decor and a bit of a view of the river."

  • "My experience at Pearl Tavern was wonderful. Although a table was not ready for us (previous guests were lingering after paying their bill) the staff gave us several options to get us ordering as soon as possible. The food was delicious, well portioned (not too big, not too small), and varied. I would highly recommend the lobster macaroni, ceviche, swordfish, and of course oysters."

  • "Pearl Tavern was in all ways a wonderful dining experience. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive, the food was amazing, and the wine list, impressive. When I have out-of-town guests, I will definitely be taking them here!"

  • "The space is very uniquely designed, but at 7 p.m. On a Friday evening, the din was unbearable. There is nothing to help absorb the sound.....the noise level was ridiculous. However, within an hour the after-work crowd had dispersed and it was quite pleasant. Nice wines, albeit a bit pricey. Food was good! Oysters delicious! Would go back.....but not on a Friday."

  • "4 stars for services. I feel that the place needs some tweaking in terms of the food quality, but service is great and the hostess was very helpful and respectful. It is a good spot for business lunch. However the fish taco is a bit disappointing. It is fried fish, but the fish is diced into tiny pieces, that you can hardly taste the fish. And it is missing the freshness of the traditional salsa and all. Don't know if I will order that again. Went back for Oysters and drinks, oysters are fresh but not the best kind I have had. Fish fry was very good. Overall I'd come back again for business lunch. Not too sure about after work drinks at this point."

  • "The seafood appetizers were much better than the entrees here. Service was amazing, view was amazing, really quite lovely but not the best seafood in town."

  • "Excellent oysters, yummy lobster roll, could use a few more veggies and a wider assortment of gin. I am a big fan of North Shore, Letherbee and Beefeater martinis. The view of the river is very cool, and it's a good place for pre-opera dining. Our waitperson was very helpful, attentive but not intrusive, turned down the loud music when we requested. Good combination of "vibrant bar scene" in front, with conversation-possible dining in back. We shall return."

  • "Booked here because of Urbanspoon ratings/ravings. Nice, old school decor, great service and the mixed oysters starter was top notch (even if $30/doz is a bit steep). The reason for the lukewarm review is the main courses. I had lobster roll - friends had salmon burger & fish tacos. All were uninspiring; the ingredients tasted less than fresh and all of were poorly executed/cooked. In particular the lobster was rubbery (ie overcooked or reheated), and there were generic lobster bits in the roll rather than just solid decent chunks of meat. Fish tacos had a fast food feel and the salmon burger was simply not tasty and looked too processed. Perhaps it's a cardinal sin to order seafood on a Monday but surely not at a seafood restaurant?!"

  • "My girlfriend and I enjoyed our first time here. We shared oysters and lobster mac and cheese. She got a lobster roll and I had a salmon burger. Everything was good and our waitress was very friendly. Would definitely recommend."

  • "Mostly bar food, but with a an emphasis on seafood. I had the mussels and my husband the lobster roll. We split oysters. All were excellent My suggestion is to enlarge the menu and I hope when the weather warms, there will be seating along the river."

  • "We tried Pearl Tavern on a weeknight so it wasn't too busy. The service was awesome with great recommendations and explanation of menu items. The food was also fantastic , the chef even came to our table to explain the ingredients and his idea behind the dish. Overall great experience, will definitely recommend to friends and go back again soon!"

  • "My husband and I dined at Pearl Tavern on an impromptu Date Night. Service was attentive and quick. The drinks were very good. Most importantly, the food was excellent! We had the razor clams, oysters, peel and eat shrimp, swordfish and the lobster roll. Everything was flavorful, not over or under done, and absolutely delicious. It started to become crowded as we left, so I would suggest making a reservation. I recommend this restaurant and we will definitely return soon!"

  • "I found it very loud to go here with a group, we were practically screaming at each other across the table. The cocktails were decent, average wine list and our waitress wasn't familiar with the differences in the oysters. The lobster mac n cheese had a lot of lobster for the price. Scallops were cooked perfect. Great Happy hour special for the oysters though!"

  • "Pearl Tavern is a great lunch spot with good seafood selections. However, an expanbded menu might be needed to attract repeat diners. Only so many times you can choose from the few lunch entrees on the menu without looking for something different, as good as they may be."

  • "Has the feel of Randolph street restaurant which is much needed in the loop. Small menu and heavily seafood"

  • "So glad this place is in the Loop (West Loop), we have somewhere local to go now! Would love to see a daily soup, ones made without any flour."

  • "Wonderful dinner, which you can build with small plates. Seafood/fish are main items and they are terrific. My only complaint - and it is a big one - is that they apparently have policy of seating single diners at the bar. Hostess first tried to seat me at oyster bar, and I said that that would not work for me. I have had back surgery and can't sit well at counter height, but felt I should not have to give my medical history to a restaurant. I made reservation weeks in advance, and restaurant was not crowded. Hostess then put me at a "table" on upper level, saying I could watch everyone. It was another bar. I gave up and sat there, but when I looked around, I saw that all single diners were at such locations. Bad policy, insulting."

  • "Consistently good. I hope they continue to expand their menu via daily specials, I'm here so often I think I'll burn through the menu pretty quickly!"

  • "My husband and I came here for some oysters and cocktails before dinner. The bar has a great look and classic feel with friendly service. A little quiet on Saturday night, especially compared to the very lively after work scene on Friday."
