  • "The quality of food here rivals or exceeds that of restaurants I've dined at around the country. Outstanding really. I considered four stars due to their need for more space. It's popular because it's so good. But it's a tight fit. I was impressed by their kids plates, although I'd recommend a sitter if you can help it, to take advantage of the great experience offered at Paynes. It is romantic but also just plain refreshing to have such high-quality food in an area heavily populated with fast food and chains. "

  • "Journal-Gazette had a review several weeks ago rating this restaurant 5 star & now we know why. This "Custard Shop" is a gem with excellent food, fun eclectic (totally rustic mis-matched furnishings) atmosphere. Yes, they serve custard, but gourmet meals as well with food presentation top notch. They grow their own herbs, vegies and meats and poultry is all organic locally grown/raised. I had the duck. It was excellent, served a top mashed potatoes with a blackberry wine sauce with blackberries throughout. Hubby had the porkchop again atop potatoes but his sat on a bed of mustard which surprised him but was excellent. Unique soups with one as a daily special. Very cute menus! Save room for dessert. Worth the drive to Gas City."

  • "I went with my family for Easter lunch. It was incredible! A variety of high quality and unique food, along with great, friendly service staff and a delicious coffee selection! I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a nice, quality menu with variety and uniqueness. "

  • "I lived in Indiana for 4 years and then moved to Chicago, where I've had my fair share of extremely unique, tasteful, and authentic food and dining experiences. I can confidently say that Paynes would have a thriving spot snuggled somewhere between the scene of WIcker Park and River West- and might I add that they would not only remain in business, but keep other restaurants on their toes! I'm so glad to have a place like Paynes to visit when I'm visitng friends in IN!"

  • "This was my second time there and once again the food was delicious. However, the wait staff buzzed around like they had no idea about what each should be doing. We had 3 different wait staff come to our table, but not in a team service way. For a long time, all 3 wait staff and at least one other staff member were gathered around the order computer looking very perplexed. Meanwhile, we were just waiting for my husband's coffee that he ordered. We ended up having to reorder it after the meal was over because no one lingered long enough, even when they dropped off our meals, for us to ask for it. The food makes this place worthwhile, but make sure you have plenty of time because the disorganized service makes the wait longer."
