A word from Paulies Kitchen
The Distillery Bar + Kitchen opened in the Spring of 2013 serving up straight forward Italian-American style dishes and boozy handcrafted cocktails. The menu was developed with an emphasis on sourcing local ingredients, taking the time to make products from scratch and being inspired by the way that ‘Mama used to make it’.

The restaurant hosts a long 30 person communal table ideal for large groups, family-style dining or getting to know your neighbour. Guests can also pull up a stool at the restaurant bar which looks on to the fully open kitchen for an interactive experience, or sit outside on the heated patio to people-watch with a bottle of wine and flavourful pasta.

You may reserve seats online for a maximum of six guests. Please note that due to the style of our restaurant service parties of 4 or more may be sat at a communal dining table. Cheers!

Diner Reviews
  • "I needed a fast and light dinner before meeting up with some friends for a movie. I was craving spaghetti and so I popped into Paulie's and had their small spaghetti portion. It came with no sides but it was plenty enough to fill me up as it was. The taste was simply delicious. I'd certainly consider Paulie's again for some spaghetti!"

  • "This is not Paulies anymore. We used to go all the time, but the menu has changed and the name too. It's now the Distillery."

  • "I see that Paulies has been getting mixed reviews on open table and so I had no idea what to expect for a quick mid afternoon lunch. I was there between traditional meal hours so the place was quiet. Service was very attentive. I chose a small portion pasta dish that was freshly prepared in the open kitchen area near where i was seated. The only unappealing aspect of the meal was being able to hear the conversations in the open kitchen and finding out that the cook did not feel well at all the day before but was fortunately beginning to feel a little bit better today. Probably not the best kitchen talk for customers' ears. In the end though I was there for the food and it was delicious and fairly priced. I'd likely return. "

  • "Four of us sat on the patio last Saturday evening. Really enjoyed the food and the drinks! Between us we ordered pasta, the boneless half chicken and the veal Parmesan. We all loved our meals!"

  • "The food is average and the service is a joke. The waiter doesn't know how to pour wine and brought out the dishes half an hour apart. It's just not the kind of dining experience that you would expect given their pricing."

  • "The restaurant was actually called The Distillery and was't Paulie's kitchen as advertised. The food was ok- standard "Italian" - felt like a chain restaurant. Would like to see a few healthier menu options. Maybe some more local fare."

  • "The food wasn't spectacular or particularly good. We went on a Thursday night and it was absolutely dead - so I think there must be a reason for that… the server was great - she was very friendly & attentive. The wines were good/well priced."

  • "We went on a Saturday night and we were seated right away. The food was very good and our server answered our questions professionally. I was very impressed with the music the DJ was playing including Sinatra, Bublė, and Sammy Davis Jr. but he made my night by including 60's Soul music. I would go back just for the music!"

  • "Go now for brunch before everyone else finds out about the broken meatball hash! The pastas are also fantastic!"

  • "Loved Paulies! This was my first visit, and I went for Dine Out. The restaurant had a fun, energetic vibe with a big, enthusiastic group sitting at the long table and lots of clamour from the kitchen. Our server was friendly and went out of her way to make sure we had a good experience. The food was awesome. We had a fried cheese & meatballs for our two appies and they were delicious. The pasta I had for my main was cooked perfectly and full of flavour. Lots of sausage and tomato with a rustic, authentic feel to it. There was no attempt to rush us through our meal (a frequent Dine Out complaint) and the portion sizes were great. We'll be back!"

  • "Nice place for dinner. I had the meatball as appetizer, a really good entree, and then I had the orquietta with Italian sauce, if you like spicy this is your plate. Really good service. The server was funny."

  • "Service is across the board pretty poor at Paulies//distillery. The servers always have an attitude and aren't afraid to show it. Good thing food and drinks are good otherwise we wouldn't come so often."

  • "Not bad .... but plenty of room for improvement. The server (Lucy?) was superb. Fast, efficient, knowledgeable and pleasant. As good as they get. I had the pasta puttanesca and while the taste was fine the consistency was dry and a bit off-putting. On the plus side the kitchen had spiced it up just perfectly for me, as I had requested. My dining partner had a bruschetta which was overwhelmed with the toppings --- but not good enough that one might start craving these. He also had a shrimp starter which was nice. The place was quiet and the staff in the open kitchen got a bit rowdy and distracting (probably out of boredom). Nothing to do? Prep and clean! On the whole a good meal and great service. Will be back? Yes. Right away? No."

  • "I think this was our 7th meal at Paulie's since it opened. We had one "very off" experience but this meal and service was quite good, this time around. They dropped the "you write out your own order routine (we never minded, but apparently some folks did) and it is now a server takes your order from a printed menu. The food is quite good and our routine has now settled into sharing several appies followed by a large salad for two and we are just fine. Alcohol is pricey and so we don't always have that --- the house red wine was not to my liking last time around. The patio is a delight on a lovely day or evening. We will be back."

  • "We eat out in Yaletown often with our 10 year old son. Tried out this new joint on a Saturday and sat at the patio. the waitress was very helpful in explaining how to order family style. The food was very good and portions are quite large. our ambassador came around and made sure we were taken care of. That was a nice touch. Paying the bill took a bit longer because you have to pay on your way out. there was a line up when we left. Overall, we had a great time."

  • "We have had 5 great meals since Paulie's opened. However, this evening they were really off of their game. The service staff were "just not with it." We had to ask for a beer glass twice, they cleared our utensils with our salad course and then brought our meals not noticing that we had no utensils. We had to ask - twice. Our drinks were never refilled without us asking and once they left with a glass but didn't return with a drink until we asked again. On the food side, the risotto was a clump of goo. And the meatballs were a bit pink on the insides for my preference. We will be back to try them again. After all --- we have had some great meals and service in these last 2 months. I hope that this was a "one of"!"

  • "more training in the kitchen and on service needed! The service was comically bad but the waiter was friendly and likeable and he warned us he was new and confused, so we didn't really mind the mix-ups. The chicken meatball flatbread was almost devoid of flavour, yikes I think they need to start over on that recipe. We ordered the beef/veal meatballs as a main course and they were good but the risotto they were served on was cold and mushy and the side of broccoli rabe was cold and limp, quite bitter and floating in butter and garlic. The patio is very nice and the prices are very good but until they get things together in the kitchen, I'd stick to drinks and appies!"

  • "Made a reservation and when we arrived were told we could sit right away or wait 15 minutes in the bar for a table outside. Gorgeous patio, seemed like a good call. Drinks in the bar were VERY slow to arrive and our table was ready before they even arrived. The staff weren't able to transfer the bar bill to the restaurant so we asked to pay right away. Half an hour later, still no bill and our restaurant table had been given away. Only ended up getting a table after pleading with some nicer restaurant servers. The French 75 cocktail was too sweet, the food was mediocre and we weren't offered any sympathy for the terrible service. Seriously beautiful patio is the only redeeming feature."

  • "Their meatballs are really good and tasty, however I'm not too sure about their flatbread pizza that my friend had. It didn't look too appealing and it didn't seem to have that much ingredients on it."

  • "Italian comfort food in a great atmosphere. It is a very new restaurant so still working out some kinks, but the ambiance is great, the food good, and service staff friendly."

  • "Great music, food, ambiance and service. Paulies is a fabulous addition to Yaletown. It is pleasently and refreshingly different than any other place in the city and I look forward to many return visits. Thanks for a great evening!"

  • "We decided to check out Paulies Kitchen for a dinner. They have a large patio area and we were seated quickly. The staff did a great job of explaining their service routines as well as the menu options. We asked for their recommendations and everything was spot on. The baked peppers (with meatballs) were amazing as a starter. We each had separate pasta dishes which were quite nice. We found the meatballs to be amazingly moist and flavourful. For desert we ventured into the vanilla gelato with olive oil --- sounds bizarre but it works. The venue is nice, the staff are hard working and eager to please and the food is a welcome change in our part of Yaletown. We will be back --- at least once a week!"

  • "Cool space although the restaurant side is a little ho hum in comparison to the more lively bar half. Meatballs were a 7.5/10 for me. I've had better. Lasagna was great. Stuffed peppers were nice. Weird payment setup where you take your bill up to the hostess stand when you're done to pay. On a busy night/lunch hour this would be a slow nightmare."
