With Paul Martin's American Grill, Brian Bennett and restaurateur Paul Fleming have realized a long-nurtured dream to create the restaurant "we've always wished was in our neighborhood."

At the heart of all great food is fresh, local, peak of the season ingredients. Paul Martin's aims to serve diners the best ingredients with meat raised in a humane and wholesome way, locally sourced produce, the best of both wild and farmed fish, artisan cheeses and cured meats from small local purveyors. The deep California-centric wine list twists and turns, by glass or bottle, through the Golden State's vineyards, with an occasional stop for an Oregon Pinot Gris or a Washington dry Riesling. Behind Paul Martin's elegantly rustic bar is an interesting array of craft beer and spirited cocktails with fresh garnishes.   • "Took a friend here for dinner after having many wonderful lunches and dinners here and raving about it to all my friends but was embarrassed and shocked by the lack of good service from our waiter - never got bread, waiter never came by after the order and we needed to get things which were not provided, food wasn't very warm and never got the dessert menu. When I got up to go to the front desk to get the dessert menu myself - they suggested I talk with the manager who profusely apologized and proceeded to turn it into a great dining experience - just like what I was used to. This is THE way all restaurants should handle problems - the manager was amazing and so very professional. I will be returning very soon!"

  • "This was my 6th time to Paul Martin's at Hillsdale. I have never been disappointed by this place until last night. We had a part of 7, so we had to sit outside. It was OK at 5:30, but by 7:30 it was cold. >>>> OUR FOOD TOOK ALMOST ONE HOUR TO ARRIVE. <<<< Our waitress, who was missing in action, never came out to explain why there was a delay, we were just left sitting there. I had to go up to the bar to get a soft drink because our water was not refilled and my wine glass was empty. One member or party went up to find a manager, who then came back and explained there had been a mishap in the kitchen. Okay, but why no one could stop by and explain that before everyone's glass was (not kidding) EMPTY. That's how long we waited."

  • "Food, great. Wait staff, wonderful and warm. However, almost didn't give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt because of the rude hostess. We had a 12:30 reservation and arrived at 12:25. She told me in a condescending tone she just couldn't seat me and that I'd have to wait until 12:30. You can't see into the restaurant when you're checking in so I thought it might be busy so fine, except why give me an attitude from the start? Well, when we finally got seated, we saw the restaurant was only 1/3 full. Ridiculous. Even if it's restaurant policy to seat parties at the EXACT time of their reservation, don't cop an attitude about it. Be nice...you are in hospitality."

I've been coming here since it opened, typically for happy hour but it is usually too crowded to find a seat during happy hour. The food is always very good at Paul Martin, especially the short ribs. Ask for a table in Will's section."

  • "After waiting more than 15 minutes our waiter came & said, "you just got here, right?" I said, No, we had been here a while. She replied, "no you haven't". I was shocked! We ordered our drinks & waited for another 15 minutes, and received them switched around. Shouldn't she remember who ordered what drink?! No customary check to see if we were happy & we even had to ask for bread! It was almost an hour & we hadn’t seen our waiter to order dinner. I asked for the Manager to complain & we were assigned the waiter next to us. The Manager offered to buy us our next round of drinks, I mentioned that it was my girlfriend’s birthday and had hoped he would have offered dessert, but no such hospitality! Can't spend that much money for such service!"

  • "The food was outstanding but the service was not that good. It took 2 hrs to have dinner on a Monday because the waiter was so slow. It took over 20 mins to get a bottle of wine and had to ask for things. Other tables were served faster and meals came sooner. Not all happy but the food was so good I will come back. I am not sure if her first day but the manager had to help her alot. Glad I went will go there again. Had the grilled salmon which was very good and we had the salt and pepper shrimp was so good that I would go back just for that and have a drink. Good wine list. Overall I would say a good choice and worth it. Thanks"

  • "I took my husband here for his birthday. Upon arriving (on time!) we were not seated until almost 15 minutes later. The restaurant was not crowded at all at this point. The hostess was on the phone taking a reservation, which seemed to be lengthy at best. We and 2 other couples were standing there waiting. When it was our time to be "helped", I was asked if I had a reservation...I showed my OpenTable printout. I was told it would be 5 minutes more because "all the servers had not arrived". This was an 11:30 a.m. brunch reservation. Good food and price for the brunch menu, but the management needs to firm up situations such as these, and work with the hostesses."

  • "Had planned a special family lunch. The server, William was excellent & very polite. When the manager realized we were there for a special event she came over to make sure everything was ok & to see if we had any special requests. That was such a nice touch for our first family meal at Paul Martins. We will definitely go back, excellent quality food, great service & very reasonable prices. I chose to sit outside, but it was just a little too windy for my parents, but they turned on the heaters & all was good!"

  • "We went here for our anniversary, with our 3.5 yo daughter. This was our 4th visit her. There were about 5-6 booths available, so I asked for a booth, and got a flat-out no, they are reserved. I replied that we had reservations too, and it's easier for us with our child. After giving me a blank look, the hostess, said, "well, you had to specify that I wanted a booth". I felt her response was wimpy and I was frustrated and almost asked to my husband if we could go someplace else. The food was good this time, but has not always been consistent. Our server was great, which is usually the case, but they must be understaffed, because the service is always in the weeds. Not sure when we'll be going back here. Go to Town instead."

  • "The kitchen and service were extremely slow. Entrees took 45 minutes to appear. The only good thing was the calamari appetizer. The soft tortillas for the fish tacos were as hard as rocks and the salmon pieces were miniscule. The Greek salad was drowned in oil and there was no feta cheese on it. Mgr. picked up our appetizer and drinks in apology. This was my 4th visit and it was an utter disappointment. I can't imagine returning after this fiasco."

  • "Rock Stars!!! The Hostess were very competent and did not worry if our party was complete or not at the time of check-in. Daniel our Super Hero Foodie was very knowledgable about the menus. For example, one my girlfriends had ordered a Negroni and I had ordered a Whiskey Sour. He did not recognize these drinks and had asked the bartender. The bartender had recognized both of these Oldie But Goodie cocktails. They were the best we've ever had living in San a Francisco and abroad. Overall, Daniel had made our Ladies Night unforgettable. The staff with there lovely smiles and friendless makes you want to return and tell all of your friends and our patients."

  • "We have eaten here numerous times and it has always been amazing. Service this time was very poor. Problems with drink orders (wine were out of stock, wrong prices quoted, drinks came after we were well into our dinner), food order (forgot to bring out some of our food), the bill (left cash in the sleeve, then charged the same credit card twice instead of charging two different ones). They did give us brunch gift cards and gift cards to compensate. Will definitely go back as this was not the norm."

  • "The first visit when PM first opened up was terrible, so terrible that we didn't even make it to the table. The hostess/host did not want to be there - TOTALLY RUDE. We believe in giving second chances and since them have been coming back and pretty much stopped talking smack about the place! Ends up being one of the best local places to dine (business or pleasure). I have a feeling the training for employees at Paul Martin's has changed and perhaps terminated the host/hostess with the rude demeanor. Customer Service Excellence 101 and NOTHING LESS."

  • "Made fathers day reservations a month in advance to finally try this place. Service was great in the beginning, but after an hour of waiting for our order, and seeing other tables seated way after we were seated being served their main course, it was way out of hand. Excuse was there was a back up in the kitchen, restaurant was not even full. It took so long to get their attention to get the bill to pay for our appetizers, manager only came at the end. What a way to spend fathers day, starved with no service."

The hostess gave us the option of sitting in the patio are instead of waiting longer for an inside table, so we took the patio table. Our server was prompt and friendly, and we ordered our food soon after we sat down. However, it took a long time to get our food - we ordered a burger, a vegetarian burger and a French dip sandwich (not very complicated dishes). Once it arrived, the food was tasty but luke warm. I had coffee with my meal which was also luke warm. Not very impressed with this place. Not sure I will return."

  • "Our entrees was cooked to perfection and artistically presented. Service was very good-food arrived in timely a manner. We did not feel rushed and the floor management team made sure we were taken care off. We both got the feeling that the staff was caring and wanted everyone to have a good time. Just a minor detail, we had to return a set of dirty flatware. Other then that we are coming back-great job everyone."

  • "This was not my first time at the restaurant & the food has always been good. There was an exception last time when the entree I ordered differed from everyone else's generous portion. The usual portions are ample but my black cod was teeny-tiny. Given the cost my fish should have taken more than 4 bites. The service from our waiter was excellent. The other problem is that they don't manage busy evenings well. With a reservation the wait can be 15-25 mins. Part of is that they assume anyone will happily sit outside (in this climate pleasant outdoor dining is a rarity, w/heat lamp or curtains included). This assumption added to being unrealistic about how much time it takes to finish a meal results in an annoying waiting around situation."
