A word from Paul Martin's American Grill - San Mateo
Seasonal & Delicious.

With Paul Martin's American Grill, Brian Bennett and restaurateur Paul Fleming have realized a long-nurtured dream to create the restaurant "we've always wished was in our neighborhood."

At the heart of all great food is fresh, local, peak of the season ingredients. Paul Martin's aims to serve diners the best ingredients with meat raised in a humane and wholesome way, locally sourced produce, the best of both wild and farmed fish, artisan cheeses and cured meats from small local purveyors. The deep California-centric wine list twists and turns, by glass or bottle, through the Golden State's vineyards, with an occasional stop for an Oregon Pinot Gris or a Washington dry Riesling. Behind Paul Martin's elegantly rustic bar is an interesting array of craft beer and spirited cocktails with fresh garnishes. Good times and thoughtful food are a way of life at Paul Martin's American Grill.

We had a reservation for 8 made about a week prior and confirmed by Paul Martins that morning. When we arrived, no table was ready for us. Staff scrambled and made a table ready averting the problem. Food service was very disorganized. Table side 'auction' with each course: "Who gets the Caesar salad?" Entrees were served lukewarm, even the mashed potatoes. Long waits between courses and a very long wait for the check and credit card receipt sequence. Not a great experience.

No one there so we figured we might be able to get adequate service... Three of us for Brunch @ $22.00++ pp which Includes: A Beverage, One Drop Biscuit, Fruit Compote & a Choice from Five Entrees. We waited about 20 minutes for a our Beverages & Biscuit and then another 20 for our Entrees... Not too difficult, however we asked our waiter if we could have another Biscuit and he answered, 'Let me ask my Manager'; Returned and told us sadly, 'We would have to pay $2.95 for each additional little Biscuit'. I declined on Principal of an 'Hidden' Biscuit Quota... We ate One of our breakfast entrees, an Bacon & Cheese Omelet & Potatoes, however the Eggs Benedict (Hollandaise sauce was a watery SOUR Lemon flavor) was NOT palatable! Tell THE Manager, "I will NOT return"!

We had a reservation; they were very busy, and we waited about fifteen to twenty minutes for our table. We were seated at my requested table, however. Our server was very good and was our meal. My disappointment was the wine. They were out of one bottle of white wine that we requested, so we ordered another, only to find out that they were out of that one, too. Upon ordering our third choice, our soup and salad arrived. We, then, cancelled that bottle and ordered just a glass of red for our dinner. Our server apologized, but it wasn't her fault.

Dined on a Sunday night with reservations, and it was busy. They sat us on the main floor where the tables are packed very close together. I asked to be sat at an empty booth, but they said it wasn't available. However, that booth was available the whole time I was there. Also, there were young children aplenty - so forget about a romantic meal. My wife's salmon was good. My chimchurri steak was just okay - tons of oil on the plate, perhaps from the fries. I won't be going back for dinner. However, their happy hour is pretty good and their mushroom burger is fantastic. Just know what you're getting in for.

Food ok but nothing to write home about. My husband and I went for lunch. I ordered the salmon sandwich and the bun is thick with lots of arugula and a small piece of salmon. Also ordered a side of brussels sprouts with bacon, tasty but oily. I bit into a piece of foil that was in the brussel sprouts and mentioned it to the server. My husband ordered a double espresso and it came late. They did comp the brussel sprouts and the espresso which was nice of them to do.

Been here twice now for a family birthday and haven't been disappointed! Food is fresh and tastes like it's homemade fresh. Have had the soups (out of this world), the steak - perfectly cooked and very tasty, the shrimp and salmon - excellent. The Ice cream is also homemade and is delicious! I would recommend! I live in the East Bay and it's worth the drive over!

This was our first time dining in the restaurant and we will definitely return. We had reservations so we were seated immediately. Without reservations we heard the wait would have been 2 hours, unless you wanted to eat at the bar. My husband and I were very pleased with our meals and cocktails. The Lemon Drop was exceptionally good. Our only complaint was that our waiter, while extremely good was over extended. It took longer than necessary to get our water, drinks and bread each time we requested them. Initially we felt the prices were a bit high, but when the food came it was cooked exactly as ordered, it was hot and there was plenty.

Service from entry to end was delightful and professional. Mushroom soup was fantastic. Fish tacos...well, mediocre at best... I would not order again. Kale Caesar salad was excellent, and polenta & vegetable main course was very good though not memorable. Recommend requesting a booth; less noisy than tables in the middle of room. Wine list is fairly extensive, but pricey for the offerings. Overall...we'll return, but not in a rush.

Went there for a second time and it did not disappoint. Family dining with both kids, one of whom is a picky eater, and everyone walked away happy and full. The first time we sat in the bar area as we did not have reservations, and while it was a bit crowded it was still a good meal. This time we had a reservation and got seated right away. Attentive service, great food, and a comfortable place all added up to a happy crowd. Will go there again and again I'm sure

I have been to Paul Martin's a few times for client meetings, but this was the first to bring my wife. The food was always good and definitely a good value. I will still come here repeatedly. The two bad things that happened. Between the time we were seated, ordered and had our soup/salad, it was an hour before the entrée arrived. A bit too long for us as we were wondering where the next course was. The sec I nd bad thing was the server forgot to return my credit card with the credit card slips. Not a big deal, but it did make me a little nervous that she did not maintain custody of my card. As I said before, I will still come back because the food is good and it is a good value.

Let me start by saying that we frequent the Paul Martin's in Mountain View and LOVE it. We spent much of our time waiting to be served in San Mateo. When our waiter brought our water, he promptly broke one of the large full water glasses spilling water all over the table. None of us got wet but it still took several minutes to clean it all up. He suggested moving us to another table. I wholeheartedly agreed, telling him that would be great as I was freezing from the blasts of cold air coming in every time the doors opened. Nope, that didn't happen...and there was a table "visually" available. Dinner was very good. It just took far too long for us to be served anything and everything. We certainly won't return to this Paul Martin's.

Kitchen got our orders wrong. Asked for pork chop medium rare; it was well done. Asked for mashed potatoes instead of sprouts, but got sprouts. While it was busy, the whole place seemed chaotic. Servers and waiters seemed hassled. Our server was great, but I think you need more help and the kitchen needs to pay more attention to the orders. Had a similar problem the week before.

Good happy hour spot to chat boisterously w/o bothering others. Some plates are tiny for the price, i.e. mahi tacos. Others are more reasonable, i.e. burrata & arugula flatbread. Nonetheless, all were delicious. Most surprising & impressive was the burger-fries-beer deal. My veg friend said her mushroom burger was the best veggie burger she'd had. Bacon & jack burger was also delicious. I don't drink beer, but they wouldn't trade for wine. I'd just give the beer to my friend. Our server brought me wine but not the beer, so I assumed they accommodated my request. When the bill came, they charged us for the wine. Instead of a refund, they brought the beer, which wasn't convenient, as we were about to leave. My friend only drank a 1/3 of it.

Went back after MANY months to see if improved. Ordered Drinks & Apps that took 45 mins and came out individually. Server did not come around for Entree order and my Guests were frustrated by their NEGLECT and I went to the front desk and asked for my check. I got the bill for $75+ and tried to use their $25 coupon and was told I could NOT use it for Drinks or Apps even though there was no restrictions on the Coupon. Whatever... paid the bill and left with their coupon which I have NO intention of trying to use it again. The entire staff at Paul Martin's was OUTSTANDING. Service is what you would expect at a 5 star resort or Michelin star restaurant, however the food is sub par and is not fit for a food court or high school cafeteria. I had a French dip sandwich and the roast beef had ZERO flavor. The horseradish sauce came on the side and was so watered down, the flavor profile was unrecognizable. The plate itself came out extremely hot and I could not even touch my lunch for 5-10 minutes after it arrived. The cobb salad my dining companion was good but there is a huge disconnect between the food price and quality. Again, outstanding service. This was the first Paul Martins we dined at. Would we come back? Maybe.

We've been to Paul Martin's before and when we received a couple of $25 coupons in the mail, we thought why not go again? The staff is very friendly and polite (points for them). In order to reach the $50 minimum, we ordered an appetizer plus main dishes. The Salt & Pepper Wild Prawns were very tasty, but $17 for 7 prawns? My dining companion ordered the Wild White Prawns & Fresh Linguini with tomatoes, spinach, garlic lemon butter. The prawns were not sufficiently clean (sand vein sticking out) and the linguini was bland! How could that be? Maybe the kitchen forgot the spice & salt. My fish tacos (salmon) were good but very light. All in all an OK meal but without that $25 coupon, way overpriced!

we were seated in a booth that had cold air blowing on us thruoght out the evening. I asked "Maria" and she said it was from "the room". Did not offer to move us to another booth although many were available. I continuously had to get up and close the door to "the room" as it doesn't close by itself. Regarding dinner...we order the prime rib special. Salad came out first, 30 minutes later Maria informed us that it was taking a long time due to the fact that we had ordered the last two pieces...what? When it arrived, the potatoes were cold and the server told us the grill marks on the prime rib were to do it being the last order of prime rib - what? When dessert was brought, we were told "I hope you like chocolate..all we have left!

this was a nice lunch spot for our group of 7 to celebrate birthdays and be on the patio. Food choices were good and several of us chose the prime rib special for $30 - nice big salad, good cut of beef, 3 scoops of delish ice cream. the mahi mahi and grilled salmon also was great - calamari and artichoke appetizers were really yummy. i love the space and the decor - good prices for great food. the service was attentive and fine. this is a place to come to at all hours of the day whether lunch, dinner, happy hour (daily from 3-7pm), etc. our group was impressed and i'm sure many will return, if not just to try the dinner specials...i still need to come for fried chicken on Tuesdays!

Food was good, service was great. The decor and dining room was very nice, not the type of place you usually see in a mall, so that was nice. Only reason not five stars is that it was a little pricey. $30 for three course menu: soup, salmon, and ice cream, was a bit much compared to other restaurants in the area. Doesn't leave much room to add on drinks and stuff. Wine menu was expensive. I didn't drink but my friend said hers was very good.

Jennifer P was great. She was nice about us changing tables (to get out of the front door draft), she was very attentive, she clearly likes the food at her restaurant, and she seems to have a good time at work. All this (and the delicious short ribs and calamari) made our date super special. The only problems we encountered were the food emerging very slowly from the kitchen and the wind tunnel through the dining room.

Saw Paul Martin's American Grill opened up, been wanting to try. Finally got a chance! Made reservation, and in about 10 min were seated. Server arrived in 5 min, got us some drinks and explained the menu briefly. We ordered the classic salmon and brick chicken (chicken was ordered from the 3 course set menu that comes w/ soup and desert). Soup was pretty good (mushroom soup). Salmon was cooked 'just right', but the chicken maybe another 2 min or so...just slightly undercooked at the thigh (which we cut off). Desert we had ice cream (3 kinds / flavors) and were made in house (Chocolate / decaf espresso and vanilla. Out of the 3, we liked the chocolate the most followed by espresso and then vanilla. Smooth soft with tense flavor.

I'm always leery of restaurants that are located in a mall, but Paul Martin's was not the norm. Of course, we were there the night the Giants won the pennant, so it was busy and noisy. But the food was really good and our server, John, was just perfect. We decided that we will go back one night and just do the bar menu and nosh on small plates. I would probably check them out for brunch, too.

I heard a lot of good comments about Paul Martins but something was missing The prime rib was dry...we had it cooked all different ways----rare plus, medium rare and well done. All were very dry and bland. Also we were a party of 10 and they said they did not have a table for large groups inside...we had to sit in the patio area and it was right near the open area and the heat lamps did not cover that area. There were curtains, but it got very cold. I asked for hot water and he did not bring it until dessert was brought out. He said he was waiting for a teapot to be available...really? Could you not bring a cup of hot water in the meantime? Overall experience was just ok....I dont think I will be going back there anytime soon

I have dined at Paul Martin's before. Lately, I have been disappointed by the always same menu. The food here is unremarkable. Only 4 items on the dessert menu is boring. The service which was outstanding during opening months has gotten sloppy. I received a coupon for $25 off a meal. With visiting family members I thought we would try it. Again, food was fine, however, our server was not terribly friendly & we waited during courses with items forgotten. Too many tables to cover? Upon presenting the coupon, it was challenged. The server said just deduct it from the check? Huh, the customer does the math? When I asked for another check, I was told Are you serious? Oh, I am serious, I won't be back! Teach service/procedures to the staff.

Even though it's in Hillsdale Mall, this is no Food Court. It rates up there with the finest on the Peninsula. Food was excellent, service was really good and we were seated immediately on a Saturday night. We will return. Hungrily.

Paul Martin's is a chain with good intentions. Fresh cooked to order food, local farm to fork style preparations and simple, yet fusion and trendy flavors. However, I think overall it just falls a bit short. The dishes are very hit or miss, and their "kids" menu is spoken and not in paper form. The longer it is there the more I could see it improve. But for the time being I think the food for the price is not a good value. We walked out of there around $30 a person, with no drinks. Some of their happy hour items were good and affordable. Brussel Sprouts are delicious and the sauce for the pork chop was good. Pork chop itself is just ok. Burger and brew happy hour special is a great deal. Worth a try, probably not worth a wait.
