A word from Paul Martin's American Grill - San Mateo
Seasonal & Delicious.

With Paul Martin's American Grill, Brian Bennett and restaurateur Paul Fleming have realized a long-nurtured dream to create the restaurant "we've always wished was in our neighborhood."

At the heart of all great food is fresh, local, peak of the season ingredients. Paul Martin's aims to serve diners the best ingredients with meat raised in a humane and wholesome way, locally sourced produce, the best of both wild and farmed fish, artisan cheeses and cured meats from small local purveyors. The deep California-centric wine list twists and turns, by glass or bottle, through the Golden State's vineyards, with an occasional stop for an Oregon Pinot Gris or a Washington dry Riesling. Behind Paul Martin's elegantly rustic bar is an interesting array of craft beer and spirited cocktails with fresh garnishes. Good times and thoughtful food are a way of life at Paul Martin's American Grill.

Despite it's convenient location, it's a pretty decent place to eat. The food was good and decently priced as well. Definitely not a stuffy up tight restaurant. Servers are really nice and accommodating. They bring the food out really quick which can be good or bad depending on your appetite. I'd go back for sure. Very easy.

I heard a lot of good comments about Paul Martins but something was missing The prime rib was dry...we had it cooked all different ways----rare plus, medium rare and well done. All were very dry and bland. Also we were a party of 10 and they said they did not have a table for large groups inside...we had to sit in the patio area and it was right near the open area and the heat lamps did not cover that area. There were curtains, but it got very cold. I asked for hot water and he did not bring it until dessert was brought out. He said he was waiting for a teapot to be available...really? Could you not bring a cup of hot water in the meantime? Overall experience was just ok....I dont think I will be going back there anytime soon

Even though it's in Hillsdale Mall, this is no Food Court. It rates up there with the finest on the Peninsula. Food was excellent, service was really good and we were seated immediately on a Saturday night. We will return. Hungrily.

We went to see the 'New' Menu... Could NOT find new items. It was a very slow night which allowed our Server to cover our needs. Their pricing for ordinary dishes is STILL over the top. The Fish Tacos (2) for $21.50 was ridiculous... Pork Chop was dry Meat swimming in Huisan sauce. Charcuterie Board was Good, however Only if you order it for One (1)... Salad with Feta & Pecans was Good... Pasta with Prawns was Good however a little too Tart from Lemon in the sauce. I was noticing on their 'New" Menu they have Daily Price and Happy Hour SPECIALS that would make their items worth what they are charging. If I go back after over 10 visits since they opened, I will stick to their SPECIAL Daily & Time Offerings!

Enjoyed our lunch food. The hostess made us welcome when we entered Paul Martin's. Waiter was very knowledgable about the menu. However when my friend was done with her meal, our waiter came over to remove her plates and proceeded to remove my plate while I was clearly still eating. Waiter apologized and asked my friend if she wanted dessert but I was still having my lunch so my friend waited until I was done with my meal. After I finished my meal, the waiter brought the bill. VERY Odd. So I asked for the dessert menu as he did not offer it to me. We decided to get dessert elsewhere. The dining area at 1pm was not even crowded and yet the waiter is not focusing on properly servicing his tables.

This was our 4th time dining here. First, the decor is very stylish and the atmosphere has a relaxing vibe. The servers are friendly and attentive. The GM let us know that one entree was not up to his standards and said it would take a little longer coming out but that didn't bother us. Upon arrival of our food, he brought a complimentary bacon mac and cheese, a very kind gesture that we were happy to chow down on. The mushroom soup is my favorite item on the menu. The salads and tacos are good also. I would recommend this for any occasion.

We were lucky to be seated away from the noisy outdoor bar scene and had fabulous service provided by Jessica. Loved my entree of mahi mahi which was cooked perfectly. The bread, calamari, and house-made ice cream were also outstanding. Less popular was the prawns and linguini, the feeling was it was a bit bland compared to everything else that was served to us that evening. Overall bill was a bit higher than would be expected in similar establishments, but with all the extra care to making everything from scratch at the restaurant, it is worth paying the premium.

This was our second visit to the San Mateo location. I have also been to the Mountain View restaurant. Both of the former experiences were delightful. The food is dependably good. Both restaurants are beautifully appointed. This last time the crowd was so rowdy, particularly the group next to us, that we couldn't converse at all. We left as soon as we were finished eating, without dessert or coffee. Our waitress was apologetic but didn't offer to move us. Perhaps we should have been more assertive. Live and learn!

Meal was well paced although we did order in stages. It's very busy so get a reservation if you don't want to wait for a table. We had a 6:30 reservation and still waited about 10 min.

Not our first time at this restaurant. This night was a complete disappointment. The mashed potatoes were super salty and the fresh squeezed lemonade tasted like they had poured a bowl of sugar in it. The waiter was great until we pointed these things out and at that point he looked annoyed. He told the Manager. The Manager went into the kitchen to taste the mashed potatoes and the lemonade and 100% confirmed what we said. All would have been okay if we did not have to pay for our awful $25 a plate meal. We all ordered the same thing. Instead they offered us free sides or dessert??? We were not hungry for more food and how was a free dessert going to make up for this awful food. They charged us the full amount. We will never go back.

2nd visit (1st was 1 year ago and it was great) & a big difference since then. Companion ordered Tuesday Special, Fried Chicken Lunch, and it was very, very dry & overdone. came with a way too large green salad/dressing was tasteless ) When the server (Ashley) came over to ask how the meal was, my companion, who had only eaten 1 piece, told her about it being too dry and barely edible. She replied, "save room for the ice cream ". Huh? No offer to bring her another plate of chicken, no apology, nor the opportunity to order something else. My companion is in her late 70's and often this age group doesn't like to "complain". I had salmon which was overcooked and the "quinoa salad" it came with had hardly any dressing. Won't return.

Not expecting much after reading mixed reviews for Mountain View and hearing that San Mateo ran out of their special early one Sunday evening. Pleasant experience all around this first visit -- their were Sunday specials at a reasonable cost, but we ordered and split the regular entrees. Fish Tacos and Kale Salad were very good, as was the Cappuccino. Service by the entire staff was excellent. Enjoyed a leisurely lunch at noon, as it was not very busy, and had plenty of time to get to a matinee performance nearby. I would return and next time at peak hours to further evaluate.

Selected this restaurant to celebrate my husband's 50th with immediate family only. The food was very good especially the steaks and side vegetables. However, the service needs tightening. We only saw one wait person serving the entire patio so we are not blaming our server. It took 20 minutes to serve our cocktails. Our appetizers were served promptly but it took over an hour for our main meal to be served. It was nice to have a long meal to celebrate my husband's birthday but it was so long we skipped dessert. My biggest issue is when I reserved a table for 7, the restaurant never mentioned that for a party of that size there was only patio seating. My mother is 83 and she would have been more comfortable in the main dining room.

Enjoyed a birthday dinner with friends here. Two of us ordered the double cut pork chop with a hoisin sauce glaze. It was flavorful and tender but we both agreed it was slightly over cooked for medium rare. The others ordered skirt steak which was flavorful but a bit salty, and the cedar plank salmon. The banana cream pie was a winner as was the heirloom tomato with Burata cheese. Only negative was the music, which was irritating and too loud.

I have been to this restaurant several times for lunches and dinners. When two friends whom I only get the chance to see occasionally wanted to go out to dinner I recommended Paul Martin's. Neither had been there before. When I made my Open Table reservation, I requested a booth so we could have the chance to chat without a lot of noise and activity around us. Not only did they give us a booth, it was in the corner in the back so we had a perfect setting. Food was great: plank salmon, and two steak dishes. The homemade ice cream was a perfect shareable dessert: 3 scoops in a choice of flavors. Will definitely return, as will my friends.
