A word from Paul Martin's American Grill - San Mateo
Local. Seasonal. Delicious.

With Paul Martin's American Grill, Brian Bennett and restaurateur Paul Fleming have realized a long-nurtured dream to create the restaurant "we've always wished was in our neighborhood."

At the heart of all great food is fresh, local, peak of the season ingredients. Paul Martin's aims to serve diners the best ingredients with meat raised in a humane and wholesome way, locally sourced produce, the best of both wild and farmed fish, artisan cheeses and cured meats from small local purveyors. The deep California-centric wine list twists and turns, by glass or bottle, through the Golden State's vineyards, with an occasional stop for an Oregon Pinot Gris or a Washington dry Riesling. Behind Paul Martin's elegantly rustic bar is an interesting array of craft beer and spirited cocktails with fresh garnishes. Good times and thoughtful food are a way of life at Paul Martin's American Grill.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Paul Martins in San Mateo is a good example of a restaurant that is growing. Their whole concepts of natural local food is good, but their cooks are elementary. Their food does not contain a lot of flavors and is actually really dull. I am sure they are going to be good later.... Much later."

  • "I was celebrating my son's birthday. The food was good - he had the French Dip, his complaint was the bread got soggy with Au Jus all over his plate. I had the double pork chop. It was not pleasant, as it was over cooked and lacked flavor. Others in the party had fish tacos, which they said they liked. The service was great - she really worked on being friendly."

  • "Overall food was ok, service was ok, but for the price we expected more. We arrived a few minutes early for our table (6:45 reservations on a Saturday evening). We were seated promptly. We were placed at a table for 4 in middle of the restaurant, and requested an empty booth, but were told that we needed to request the booth in advance. The booth in question was already taken. We also had a cold draft that we tried to address, and they tried to accommodate us, but the spot where we were was tough to address. We should have asked to move. There was an issue with my wife's order, because it came out a few minutes after our orders and all of our food was warm, rather than hot. No more characters left for this review..."

  • "I really wanted to like PM's as I'd heard a lot about it. But the food and service were just okay -- poor if you consider how much it costs. Drinks were good and so was banana cream pie, but the rest was very mediocre. I had heard the fish tacos were good but the tortillas were cold and the whole thing tasted too fishy, which usually is a sign of unfresh seafood."

  • "We really enjoy the food and relaxing atmosphere. This visit we introduced our eight year old to Paul Martin's and she loved it. Jenny was our server and she was terrific. She provided additional information about each item that she brought to us. Very enjoyable."

  • "Only complaint is you don't need music playing. Just too much noise and hard to talk. Food and service was great and I have been back many times."

  • "Made a Resv. for 3 OT (VIP) @ 6:30 Mon.-arrived 6:20. Checked-in with Hostess & Host (Davis) told the only availability was at the Bar. I told them I had made a reservation requesting outside dining, Davis said it is unavailable. I saw MOST tables outside were empty and he said he had reservations. I said, so do I... I was finally seated at a table next to the inside wall/next to the service area & told him kindly, I was NOT happy-didn't matter to Davis. I waited for a Server (Dee) to approach and ordered 5 apps, 3 entrees, 2 beers, 2 Cocktails and a bottle of wine. Dee was nice, however handling tables inside & outside could not service them adequately! As is the norm here, Food was adequate yet overpriced... EXCEPT for Specials."

  • "While on the whole, we like this place, I would not recommend the fish tacos. They arrived cold and were not good at all. The skirt steak, on the other hand, was tender and delicious."

  • "Took a flier on Paul Martin's when deciding to dine out whilst in transit from SF back home. Made res on OT for 6 PM which was minutes in advance of arrival. We were seated in the dining room within 5 minutes of arriving. Pretty good for Saturday evening. Dining area is adjacent to large bar area but that just enhanced the people watching. Service was very attentive. Ordered drinks and sandwich fare. Food came incredibly fast and was good but not great. Shared the homemade ice cream trio which was excellent. Out the door for a little over $50 incl tip. Definitely will go back."

  • "This was my 5th visit and as usual was terrific. The food was perfectly prepared. Our waiter Francis was very attentive and very knowledgeable about all the food. Love love!!! Can't wait for my next visit."

  • "Paul Martin's figured out how to train staff to treat customers with care. It's about as close to visiting one of San Francisco's better dining establishments as you can get on the Peninsula. Don't get me wrong, I grew up on the Peninsula but, after living in San Francisco for years, I realize there's a difference in the service talent a world-class city draws and San Francisco has some of the best in the country. Food at PM is good and cost about what it's worth so, price for product is right. Grilled artichoke app. was and spinach dip great starters. Setting is up town comfortable-not too dark, not too light & noise level such that you know your in a popular spot. Check this place out if dining in San Mateo & looking for a cut above."

  • "Met with some friends on a Wed evening....the place was packed! Good thing I got reservations...bad thing, their system was down! Orders done by hand....luckily they had tons of alcohol and apps. Very good service, food was delish...it is very loud to say the least. The restaurant itself is very well decorated and designed. The kitchen is well done and the manner in which the food is prepared and served shows that they take their food pretty serious which is always nice...I would recommend it and I will make it a regular on our restaurant circuit for sure!"

  • "I will try it again in a few months but our first visit was not stellar. The menu, wine list and drinks list all are terrific. My disappointment is in the service. The kale salad and mushroom soup were delicious. We both ordered steaks and both our meals arrived cold. Not just room temperature, but cold. The blue cheese on my steak had not even begun to melt. Our server fairly attentive but completely insincere. A woman came to our table during our appetizer course and said "How is everything". She might have been the manager but she didn't introduce herself or appear to actually care how our experience was. She seemed very uncomfortable with approaching our table and it made us feel unwelcome."

  • "My wife and I have spent a lifetime in the restaurant business, the majority of the time I ask myself ," why do investors put up BIG dollars and don't see or taste the problems they're having". you and your mgmn't team have really hit the magic formula your facilty is not over done , our server Steve was fantastic, new the menu, gave us great service, and he spent time to answer our questions as we had not been there before, at first I thought the price of $18. was high for a french dip sandwich but after the food arrived and we tasted it and finished every drop I was totally satisfied .It was without a dought the best dining experience we had in a very long time...... Just keep it up"

  • "We were seated by one of the managers. She said the waiter/waitress are busy today and she will be helping out. She told us about the restaurant how they get their food and Bread. She said their bread comes daily from Acme but when our meal came we received no bread. Otherwise the food was very good."

  • "Our waiter was very friendly and upbeat and knowledgeable of the menu. The wine choices were just OK and, for the most part, too aggressively priced. The missing link seems to be between the waiter, the kitchen, and the food runners. A request was made by one of our party about the sauce for the shrimp cocktail and this was a complete failure by the staff. Also servings were not made in an orderly and timely manner. The food was a seven overall on a scale of ten."

  • "We were expecting more of a steakhouse, but there were only 2 steaks on the menu(not even a filet), our waiter was pleasant, but young and not experienced. We ordered drinks and it was a good 15 minutes before we received them. I ordered the new york steak it was ok , but not worth $36, maybe $18 at best. Probably won't go back."

  • "The food is good. The service is excellent. We sat on the "patio" so it wasn't noisy. I think the restaurant is expensive. It did comp a birthday dessert of the birthday person's choice which was very nice."

  • "I have been to Paul Martin's at least 10 times in the last year. I have never been dissapointed. Each time I try a new menu item and each time I find a new favorite. If I had to pick a favorite, it would have to be the mushroom burger. I'm not a vegetarian, but this burger is out of this world (and for those that don't know, it's not a burger with mushrooms on it). If I had to mention room for improvement, I would suggest that they not change their menu items so often. The first thing I ordered was the chicken enchiladas which were wonderful and the next time I went, they were no longer on the menu."

  • "Our waitress kept forgetting water after three requests. I ordered the polenta entree and the polenta were almost black. Who burns polenta and then sends it to the table. This was my second time and the previous time was great so that is why I returned with friends. But after this experience I am not sure I will go back."

  • "Visited recently and was sadly disappointed: waitress may have been new but we had to ask several times for water and bread, food was long time coming and came out cool, and the place is loud, loud, loud!!! The place may be farm to table, but it is also very expensive. In the spirit of full disclosure, we were informed that we came in after two large groups on the patio, and the manager did comp us our entrees after I asked that my soup be warmed up. However, will not go back very soon. Sorry."

  • "We have always enjoyed this restaurant. The quality and freshness of food has been excellent. We have experience slow service a couple of times, but that never kept us away. Service is great, suggestions are always given when asked. I have been here for both lunch and dinner and think this restaurant is great. Seasonal veggies, well executed meats, and delicious desserts. What more could one ask for?"

  • "The menu had many options and every member of our family of two adults, 2 kids 9 & 12 and grandma found something to eat at our birthday celebration. We all enjoyed our food and the chocolate cake was outstanding. We would definitely go back. My 12 year old wanted to go back 2 days later when we were in the area for lunch."

  • "Sunday night, 8:15 pm reservation (closing is at 9:00). Came in right on time. All two person booths were full. Nobody else present and waiting. Refused to seat me in one of the ~10 or so 4 person tables or booths that were open and free (and scattered throughout the filled tables). Only offered the bar, a seat at the large communal table, or wait 10 minutes for one of the two person booths to finish and be reset. Most of those empty tables were still empty when I left. Service there was fine (and given how late it was, the communal table was nearly empty, and was empty by the time I finished), but it was silly that I couldn't be seated at a normal table or booth I had a reservation for. Food was good as usual. Calamari & Ribeye"

  • "Love the quality of the food. Everything is made fresh in house including the ice cream! How awesome is that? The greens are fresh and cooked just right. Enjoyed the house made pasta with prawns. The pork chops were amazing! I can't get enough of this place. Can't wait to go back....=)"

  • "This was not our first time at Paul Martin's. Usually a pleasant experience and good food. Unfortunately, this last visit had very slow service and we were very disappointed with the food. We had visitors from out-of-state and ordered cocktails and the seafood platter to start. The cocktails came relatively quick and seafood platter arrived 45 minutes after we ordered. When the main meal came, the three mushroom burger came with a single layer of mushrooms, hardly a snack let alone a burger. We had tried this before and enjoyed it. We're not sure what has changed but at present, we can't recommend this restaurant."

  • "I was a bit hesitant to come here simply be cause it was attached to the Hillsdale Mall, but the outdoor lounge looked very nice and it warranted giving the place a shot. We cam here for dinner and were seated, and told that the source all there food both locally and organic if possible, that's a plus! Drinks and apps came and were great, service was awesome and it was a great touch to see the manager coming by all of the tables checking up on how everyone was doing and if they needed anything! The salads and entrees were great and the rib eye actually reminded me of a much more expensive well known steak house down in Cupertino. I will for sure be back. Plus that outdoor lounge is going to be awesome in summertime."

  • "There were 3 in our party. I had the Blackened Rib-Eye, which was good, but cooked unevenly. I asked for Medium, some of the steak was well done and other parts were Medium-Rare. Less successful, the mashed potatoes were soupy, the meat in the French Dip was tough and chewy, the Brick Chicken was over-cooked and tough. Most successful, the French Fries were excellent. Overall, it was a disappointing and expensive experience."

  • "Paul Martins is a great restaurant---except it is so noisy that it is difficult to have conversation with the meal--which is definitely part of dining out! The menu is appealing. The waiters (male and female) are well trained , polite, knowledgable, and accommodating.. I have had lunch and dinner there several times. Lunch is less noisy than dinner--I think more alcoholic drinks makes for a louder crowd. The fish tacos are my favorite, and others in my party raved about the brick chicken. I have had the pasta with prawns also, and it was delicious. The banana cream pie is superb! Yum!!!! I have recommended PM to several who have enjoyed it also. The noise is not a total deterent, but would be even better a bit quieter. Read above"
