A word from Paul Martin's American Grill - Mountain View
Seasonal & Delicious.

With Paul Martin's American Grill, Brian Bennett and restaurateur Paul Fleming have realized a long-nurtured dream to create the restaurant "we've always wished was in our neighborhood."

At the heart of all great food is fresh, local, peak of the season ingredients. Paul Martin's aims to serve diners the best ingredients with meat raised in a humane and wholesome way, locally sourced produce, the best of both wild and farmed fish, artisan cheeses and cured meats from small local purveyors. The deep California-centric wine list twists and turns, by glass or bottle, through the Golden State's vineyards, with an occasional stop for an Oregon Pinot Gris or a Washington dry Riesling. Behind Paul Martin's elegantly rustic bar is an interesting array of craft beer and spirited cocktails with fresh garnishes. Good times and thoughtful food are a way of life at Paul Martin's American Grill.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Had a business dinner there with some colleagues who generally prefer good steak houses. This isn't a steak house as we found out. The service was adequate. Our server seemed a bit scattered and disorganized. It wasn't busy. The portions were small. Too small for my taste given the price. Money wasn't a big issue for us but still you want to see value. The place is nice inside and with the name it just seemed like it would be one of those upper scale bar and grill places but it's not. Not sure id return unless they upgrade their menu with some classic steak offerings and maybe upgrade the level of service, given the prices they want."

  • "Happy Hour 7 days a week from 3pm - 7pm draws the business crowd. Seasonal entrees are delicious - favorites are: Bistro Burger, Brick Chicken, Salmon Tacos & Salt/Pepper Prawns. Bartenders - Rick, Audrey, Matt & Teri are excellent, as are all servers and hostess staff! Come and have what Eric is cooking up today . . . !"

  • "First time visit to Paul Martins and we were pleasantly surprised. There were four of us and we each enjoyed our selections. The fish tacos, short ribs and corn on the cobb were all outstanding. The BBQ ribs were really good, the plank salmon good but not great. Our server (Misael) was excellent and the room, although quite loud, was acceptable for conversation (but certainly not quiet conversation). Would have been a five star review were it not for the plank salmon and the noise level. Overall, great place!"

  • "It is a real pleasure to recommend this restaurant. I had one of the best meals I have ever had here. It wasn't like dining at the Ritz. There were no white table cloths, but in some ways it was better than dining at The Ritz. I have almost never eaten at a restaurant where every single item was perfect. But, that is what I experienced at this place. The Gin and Tonic was the best I have ever had. My steak was cooked perfectly, and I asked for something slightly different. The home made ice cream was stunning, especially the chocolate. Even the shortbread cookies from the kitchen made my eyes roll. I'll be back here when I visit the Bay Area on business."

  • "On a business trip and my group sat in a booth nearest the entrance for dinner. Sitting at the end facing the door, depending on time of day and time of year (this was in the evening), the sun and glare hits you smack in the face! I wasn't trying to be super cool wearing sunglasses while dining... at the same time, we didn't want to intrude the ambiance. Service is good. Menu selection seems light, but reasonable for the size of the restaurant. We would come back again and eat at the restaurant."

  • "My neighbor and I went over for dinner but ended up having happy hour small plates and wine on the patio. It was lovely, comfortable and we were able to easily converse without a lot of noise or interruption. My friend enjoyed the street tacos and I had a delicious corn soup. We shared the grilled chicken skewers. It made for a nice, light dinner."

  • "The restaurant has a great assortment of cocktails and tasty hor'deurves. We prefer to eat at the bar as the environment is quite fun and interactive."

  • "We had very good impressive service UNTIL the smoke alarm went off just as we were ready to order....they were very nice about it. I know there was nothing they could do...just disappointing for us and I am sure for them too..........! We went next door to Pacific Catch & they were very accommodating. Felt sorry for the PM wait staff....short night for them too!"

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 27th wedding anniversary with a fabulous meal at Paul Martin's American Grille in Mountain View. The service was very good. The cuisine was superb. I highly recommend this restaurant for fine dining experience."

  • "I enjoyed all my visits to Paul Martin's in Mountain View. The place is very nice, the atmosphere is nice and most of the staff is friendly. The menu is rather limited and overpriced. The fish tacos which were about 18 dollars can be just as good and with significantly more fish for half the price, at a lower level establishment. I do understand that you pay for the location and building and so on, but the food is really overpriced. The mushroom burger was very, very, salty and it didnt seem to deliver the 'amazing' culinary experience that the server was bragging about. The chicken and polenta was so-so, the polenta was old somehow. So, the choices are a few and mediocre. If you go there, go for the atmosphere and the drinks."

  • " Have eaten at Paul Martins in San Mateo, love the food, service & the professionalism.Mountain View, another story. There was one waiter for our whole side of restaurant,he tried,he was pleasant, but overwhelmed by his workload.Where was manager?Waiter needed more training, took 15 minutes for our drinks once ordered, restaurant was half full and 2 bartenders were working. Our water glasses were never refilled, no one came to ask, requested bread three times, until it arrived. 2 dishes were good(entrees)2 were mediocre.Banana Cream Pie, dry&flavorless, sent it back. All four of us would'nt go back to this location, better management needed &better training, you have incredible location here, why not make experience for diners, incredible too."

  • "We walked in and the hostess was not very nice informed us we would have to wait. after 15minutes we were seated another 10 minutes we finally saw our server. after ordering our first course, soup, arrived luke warm sent it back took 10 minutes for it to return. main dishes arrived mine was a steak cob meat was tough with no taste my wine was $20 for a glass where all other places I have had it were $14-16. This place needs work on their service and the prices were too high for what you got. there was nothing that stood out."

  • "We arrived 30 mins before our reservation. The receptionist said that we can have a drink at the bar. I expected for them to come get us when our table was ready, but we had to go back to the front. Our waiter was pleasent and took our order for our appetizers and our main course. The appetizers came out fast, but our main course took another hour. I ordered the rib eye (medium). The waiter apologized for the wait. Finally the food came out and the ribeye was well done and tough. The waiter apologized again, but by now, I was tired of waiting and we had another engagement to attend so I had to cancelled my order. Disappointing as this was my first visit and maybe my last."

  • "I'm not sure if they were understaffed but either way we were very dissapointed with our experience here. We had to take our food to go it took so long to get our food. This happens, but to bring us the bill for over $100 without any apologies from management. The waiter asked the manager to come and talk to us and instead we saw her slam through the kitchen door in anger. It was just a really bad dining experience. I've never written a review good or bad."

  • "This was the 3rd time we had been to Paul Martin's. It was still very good, but a little pricey. The food was very good no matter what you ordered. We had the meat and cheese board as an appetizer. They could have trained their wait staff a bit better because when we asked about the kinds of meat and cheese, an example of her answers were "salami" and "blue cheese". (I could have told her that!) We ordered the polenta with chicken (~$19), the fish tacos(~$19), the skirt or hanger steak($25), and the New York strip steak($40!). All were excellent. Excellent selections of beers and wine. We did have to flag down the waitress a few times for water and such. The hostess who greeted us was excellent. I'd go again."

  • "1st visit 6/23/2014 for my wife's birthday. Two of us arrived per our reservation & were seated immediately. Table was prep'd for 4, not 2 as it should have been 'prior' to our being seated. Although we were seated at 5:45pm, during their "every day" 4-7pm Happy Hour, in order to indulge in the special Happy Hour prices and foods, we would have to be "moved" from the "restaurant table" to the "happy hour communal table or bar" - a "game" that most restaurants tried a number of years back, but many quit doing due to the vocal complaints of their higher paying customers. Food was excellent. Key issue was the courses came way too fast, before we had even eaten 1/2 the prior course. Felt like we were "on the clock" for the next guest seating."

  • "first time to try here. Good service from beginning to the end. Food was ok, average that you simply enjoy the food but not outstanding. It is that you don't feel it is bad that you won't come here any more but also it is not good enough that you feel you need to come back later... French dip a little undercook. Salmon also a little undercook. Lemon drop too sour. Tea was ok by tea bag. but sea salt caramel and chocolate ice cream are pretty good (better than food). Maybe because it is new and haven't pick up the stable cooking yet. Maybe come back 6 months later to check it out again for 2nd chance. But currently, I will prefer go to pacific catch or the counter in the same plaza for similar price but better tasty food."

  • "Had a really nice experience here for an early Sunday dinner. One of the few places that still offers a prime rib dinner that doesn't have red velvet booths and fossils dining in it. We will be back."

  • "My fella & I were trying to find some great food on a whim and everything was too busy/full. I hit up open table and found us a reservation right away! I love that! I got the brick chicken and it is literally the best ever! My guy got the French dip and loved it! We shared the trio of ice cream and we are still talking about the salted caramel ice cream (I used to work for a caramel company and am rarely impressed). I will definitely be returning to see more seasonal goodness from this place."

  • "We had a group of 5 and were able to sit outside on a warm evening. It is a bit quieter and very pleasant, and the food was quite good, I really like the salt and pepper prawn appetizer. But the service was a bit slow, perhaps since we were out of sight . This is my 3rd time eating at Paul Martins and the drinks take quite a while to arrive, so order quickly if you want a cocktail. All in all, a nice evening."

  • "It was good food, but it wasn't worth the price. We were paying for the decor and, I imagine, the location, but the food wasn't particularly memorable. There are close-by restaurants that are priced the same but offer better quality food."

  • "It was busy when we went to Paul Martin's. The food was good, the ambiance was great, though the service was not up to par. They may have been short staffed, but the service, although friendly, was not well-timed and the communication between the service staff and the kitchen staff was not effective. It took too long to place our order and then when it came, it was not quite right. Meat cooked at a different temp than requested, side not included as listed on the menu. It may have been mixed up because someone else ordered a side of the same side that came with the entree and the kitchen thought that they requested the side on a separate plate, rather than in addition to. I will go back to try again as the food was good."

  • "My friend and I had a lovely dinner on Monday night. Their $49 special dinner for two is a great deal and it was really delicious too! We both ordered the flatiron steak and shared a Crème Brule for dessert. Our waitress was delightful and made some good suggestions. We will be back!"

  • "Paul Martin's is a great addition to the neighborhood. My neighbors and I walk there frequently. Have been for Happy Hour - Excellent; Lunch - Excellent; Dinner - Excellent. Haven't yet been for Brunch. The food is consistently good and service is consistently outstanding. Only complaint is the dessert menu...needs improvement."

  • "We were three celebrating a birthday. The service was poor, but the result of that poor service was: we all ordered the roast beef special, which after waiting for our entree, were told they ran out of it, but we were there for a 6:15 reservation. Never got bread. Wrong salads. Cold substitute Entrees. It was Fathers Day, but I would assume the restaurant knew that and should have been prepared. But. No excuse for all the other problems."

  • "The food and service are equally excellent. The ambiance is perfect. Not too loud for such a crowded and popular restaurant. I recommend it all the time to anyone. I have already spent many major occasions the latest being Father's Day. The Manager is wonderful. So is Jennifer."

  • "We booked for Father's day lunch. What a horror! We waited 1 1/2 hrs for a meal we never received. We flagged down a hostess to refill our drinks because there was no waiter to be found. The waiters all hid. When we finally finally tracked down our waitress after 40 minutes, we were told there was a problem in the kitchen and our meal would be delayed a little. After 1 1/2 hrs of waiting we asked to see the manager. The assistant manager came and explained that two cooks walked out. We asked why we weren't told sooner. No real answer and no apologies were given. Management dropped the ball on this one! Many diners walked out. This was our first experience with Paul Martin's and they guaranteed we will never be back."

  • "As long time and loyal Fleming's customers we expected better. Dined here for the first time Father's Day brunch and the wait for our entree's was over an hour. The kitchen was short staffed and our waiter though extremely apologetic and gracious enough to offer free desserts didn't tell us of the delay upfront or recommend we just order the prime rib which would have been faster. Several surrounding tables were complaining of the wait and leaving mid meal. We may go back for dinner and try again but not without asking first about the wait for food upfront."

  • "Took family of 5 here for Father's Day brunch and it could not be better! Great food, service, not crowded. Perfect!!"

  • "Some of the most delicious food we've even eaten! The burger was like something out of a fantasy--scrumptious organic beef cooked to perfection, a bun so tasty we could have eaten it by itself, and the all the trimmings we could ever have wanted. We had a moderately-priced Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara which also exceeded our expectations."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "This was the first visit our group of six elder women made, and we all agreed we would go back again. The hamburgers were exceptional, the service quick and attentive, the ambiance good at an early hour, but a bit noisy later as the evening diners came. Remember to try the ice cream!"

  • "I have eaten here several times and have enjoyed it very much. Recently I took several friends there for lunch and enjoyed it once more. The only problem I had was with a man at the bar who was there the whole time we were. He had a loud, braying laugh that was disruptive and annoying. Generally speaking, the noise level is a factor but can be largely ignored. I will return for future meals with my friends."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "Nice place, interesting menu, good food, good service. Will go back to try other dishes. It was noisy being seated in the bar area, next time would request to sit in the dining room area away from the bar. Not a big deal but on the reservation we did say it was an anniversary dinner but nothing came of it."

  • "First time sitting on the patio with my book club group. It was cold & very windy even with the heat lamps on (they are too far overhead). The waiter tried to use the curtains to help, but it was just too windy. I suggest putting up some windbreaks. My group was annoyed that the waiter didn't offer us the happy hour menu without prompting. Several of us had been there and knew to ask. 3 people had the burger, beer, & fries option on the happy menu and were quite pleased except for the one grump even she had to grudgingly admit that it was actually a good deal. I had the fried chicken Tues special - I'd been dying to try it. There was something just a bit off about it so I was disappointed. The steak salad was pronounced yummo by another."
