A word from Paul Martin's American Grill - Mountain View
Seasonal & Delicious.

With Paul Martin's American Grill, Brian Bennett and restaurateur Paul Fleming have realized a long-nurtured dream to create the restaurant "we've always wished was in our neighborhood."

At the heart of all great food is fresh, local, peak of the season ingredients. Paul Martin's aims to serve diners the best ingredients with meat raised in a humane and wholesome way, locally sourced produce, the best of both wild and farmed fish, artisan cheeses and cured meats from small local purveyors. The deep California-centric wine list twists and turns, by glass or bottle, through the Golden State's vineyards, with an occasional stop for an Oregon Pinot Gris or a Washington dry Riesling. Behind Paul Martin's elegantly rustic bar is an interesting array of craft beer and spirited cocktails with fresh garnishes. Good times and thoughtful food are a way of life at Paul Martin's American Grill.

Delicious food. I am not on a low sodium diet but I pay attention on the salt content in the food and it can be difficult to get the right balance sometime in a restaurant. This was the first restaurant where food taste really delicious with very little salt. They could improve a little bit on the desert menu - very limited choice there. Our server was very pleasant and really professional. This was our first time and we can't wait to go back there.

Very good food every time we go, which is why we go back, but very spotty service. At first we thought it was because the restaurant was new. But it has been long enough. Service still pretty inconsistent.

I arranged a dinner for about a dozen friends, knowing that there would be "food choice" problems -- from vegetarian to paleo to who-knows-what else. I had been to the restaurant before, and its menu encompassed that breadth of "But I only eat...." And the food is extremely good, too. I wanted a place that would be quiet enough for a group of people to hear each other talk, too. On its own Paul Martin's might not qualify for that (though it'd be just fine for, say, 6 people). But that led me to learn just how excellent the service was. The wait staff called me earlier in the day to say that if I could adjust my reservation by a half hour, we could have a private room. Heck yeah! When I arrived (early) the manager told me the previous party got a late start, and we might not get the room at 7; he also pointed out the alternatives ("We could put you on the patio, which you would have to yourselves"... which is where we ended up). He went out of his way to keep me in sync with what was going on, and to ensure we had great, attentive -- but never in-the-way -- service for the entire night. I couldn't ask for a better experience. It's very easy to recommend Paul Martin's!

I made the reservation on Open Table. So easy. We have dined here several times. Each time seems to get better. Our Dinner was for a business and pleasure. Wait staff was attentive and pleasant. Nice selection of offerings-- Salmon, steak, and short ribs. Yummy starters. Generous portions. We never felt rushed so the timing was perfect.

My friend and I had a wonderful lunch at Paul Martins. We both ordered the fried polenta, which was perfect for lunch----not too heavy but filling, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Our waiter was prompt, courteous, and quite funny! I've been here before and have noticed that the wait staff is quite remarkable and I sense they are quite properly trained in their duties. To finish off our wonderful lunch we had the banana creme pie. Simply delicious. They have a very light chocolate layer between the custard and pie crust which not only adds a nice flavorful touch but keeps the crust from becoming soggy from the filling. Ambience is quite modern but still very cozy.

We had a 7:00 PM reservation. We waited 15 minutes to be seated. Service was poor. The restaurant was out of several items, however, the waitress informed us they would not provided substitutions. I had a disappointing dinner and two drinks for $98.00. I don't plan to return.

The best thing the Mountain View Paul Martin's location has going for it, is it's location. I wouldn't return otherwise. There is nothing wrong with their fish tacos but you can get that anywhere and the Prime NY steak was fine but so not worth $40. Go to Fleming's in Palo Alto or Birk's in Santa Clara if you want steak.

My husband and I have eaten at PM's several times - finding it quite pricey and the service rather sketchy each time. The last visit before this one, we came on a Sunday to have the prime rib special. Portions were smaller than usual, but it made a nice meal. This past Sunday we came for the special again, but for $5 more we had a splendid meal! The kale salad with fresh anchoivies was my choice and my husband had the mushroom soup - both EXCELLENT! The shortrib entree was much more generous in size than the roast beef special and the three scoop ice cream dessert was divin!..All in all an excellent meal with a pleasant, experienced server.

We had a really nice meal, food was very good...most tender calamari we've had. The service was less than stellar....we had a party of 9 and the food was not all delivered at the same time. The bowl of soup my mom received was not hot and we asked 3 different people (not our server, as she was elsewhere inside) to take care of it - it took over 10 minutes to have it taken back and heated. If they could improve their service....it would be great to go back.

I was excited to try a new restaurant, especially one that Open Table said was a steak place. Unfortunately, they don't seem to know how to cook a New York strip. Ordered medium rare, first one came out with barely any pink in the middle. The second one came out barely seared on the outside. The third steak was done as ordered, but was very fatty. I won't be going back.

  • Prime Rib Special is Mediocre
    OpenTable Diner Since 2003
    Dined on 11/2/2014
Came for the Sunday $25 prime rib special (salad, prime rib main course with mashed potato, ice cream dessert), which is advertised on the restaurant website. Waitress thought it was the night for fried chicken special (actually on Tuesday), so we set her straight. The salad was somewhat wilted and dry. The prime rib is not so "prime", although good size (12 oz) and arrived somewhat cold. The ice cream dessert (3 small scoops in an over-sized bowl) came without the advertised cookie and no explanation why it was missing. When we asked, they said they ran out--no substitution offered. All in all a mediocre experience and performance by the restaurant. Probably not going back.

Wanted to try something new to celebrate my friends and my birthdays. A client and friend recommended the restaurant, so thought we would try it. The online reservations was a nice easy touch. Greeted nicely. Table was ready, no wait. Waiter was good, checked on us frequently. Food was tasty, but pricey. Nothing special about the food. Mushroom soup was outstanding, but only a soup. The fish tacos were good, but a bit too much aioli spread. My friend had lobster. Asked how it was and she replied, "Okay." Again, nothing special for the price. The place was noisy and we had to shout to talk. Nothing special for a birthday celebration. No complementary ice cream or dessert. I don't think I will come back or recommend the place.

I brought a group of 8 here for dinner and everything was excellent! There was a great energy in the place and it wasn't too loud or too quiet. The food was excellent especially the salt and pepper prawns and the pork chop. The service was great, maybe a little slower, but we weren't in any hurry. Overall, we felt well taken care of.

mgmt needs to tighten up. Went here for a business dinner and client steak was cold as was my pork chop. Client was also unhappy with calamari. Just seems the staff is overwhelmed in running the restaurant. Would not go again for business meals. Has fallen off since used to go to El Segundo location in Southern California quite a bit.

The food was excellent, the service attentive and, except for the crowd of giants fans at the bar, the noise level was tolerable. However, it would have been nice to be able to read the menu without a flashlight and see the expressions on the faces of my dinner companions. Dim booth lighting may foster romance but is wasted on booths that seat 6.

Thought we would try the new grill in town (not that we don't have plenty in the Mt.View/Los Altos/Palo Alto area). Anyway we ate early because of a 7PM concert, showed up for our 5:45 reservation, had good greeting & service all evening. Sat in a nice booth, food was great (brick chicken a well-deserved house specialty, my grilled braised short rib perfect; wild mushroom soup was the hit of the meal, just outstanding)….We'll be back.

The restaurant is supposed to be very upscale, but frankly Pacific catch next door is much better. PMs food delivery can be very spotty (I have eaten there 4 times), sometimes food gets delivered in a timely manner and sometimes it's very, very slow. It' not the staff's fault, but timing form the kitchen. And the menu seems pretty much the same every time I visit. These are details that need to be corrected considering the price point (high-ish) that they charge.

The roast beef dinner was a big hit with members of my family. It was perfectly cooked for those who do not like their roast beef too bloody. The seasonal lobster tail dinner was also excellent, The lobster was moist and tender but the green beans really stole the show. Changing the menu to fit the season to use locally grown food is both a nice concept and provides very tasty side dishes and salads. This is a fine place to have a Sunday dinner with the family.

This was our second time dining at the restaurant. After the first time we were on the fence and wanted to give it another try. We started with the oysters and calamari and both were good. Then the butter lettuce/blue cheese salad. The dressing was too oily and did not have enough blue cheese to get the full flavor Two of us ordered the mahi mahi and it was disappointing. Another ordered the skirt steak and that was cooked perfectly. Our waiter was training another waiter so was pretty attentive. But the dishes were not cleared after our appetizers were finished so when the salads arrived the table was crowded. Finally both courses were cleared at the same time. Overall the experience did not stand up to the price.

Came here for a business lunch and sat on the patio, nice option on a gorgeous day, especially since inside is swanky and a bit dark. I had the mahi mahi, and it was good. Service was friendly, if a bit inattentive (no utensils until our meal came which made buttering the bread a bit of a challenge). I know the place hasn't been opened long so I'll give them a chance and try it again.
