A word from Patrona
Patrona Restaurant and Lounge is located in the heart of beautiful Ukiah, Mendocino County, California. We are a family-run business and view the restaurant as an extension of our kitchen and living room. Our building served as the town grocery store for over one hundred years. Now lovingly restored, it is softly lit with warm brick walls, filled with hand crafted tables from local artisans and run by a staff that cares.

Bridget and Craig, two winery chefs, opened Patrona in 2003. The simple goal was to enjoy the great area we live in and share this with our family and friends. Our mission statement is simply “Happy People”. We need to be happy about what we do and how we do it. Our guests need to be happy and feel good as well as our neighbors and future generations. This means a thoughtful and sustainable business. Our menu changes are based on today’s catch from the gardens, ocean and local purveyors.

Service very good. All food delicious. Able to order the seafood pasta even though it was not on the nightly menu. Only downside item was our Reserved table for 2 had to be angled awkwardly to seat ourselves without bumping into the neighboring tables. Too tight & cramped to pull out chair to seat comfortably without disturbing the tables beside us. Other than that we had a memorable meal for our 43rd anniversary.

Ukiah is not known as a center of culture, by any means. On the opposite side of the block in which Patrona is located the buildings are empty and abandoned, complete with broken windows and boarded up doors, for instance; but this place is a wonderful find. Just off main street in the restored half of the block, you can walk from State Street (Ukiah's main street), up the block to Patrona, and pass several wonderful little locally owned specialty shops. Patrona fits right into the ambiance. The tables are rustic, but polished; the decor is as timelessly rich as the wine country around it, but it is also a modern restaurant that tastefully balances the need for modern services with a light, historical flair. The servers were energetic, motivated, and helpful; the portion were, if anything generous for a chef run restaurant. We'll be back. Our only regret is that they aren't open for breakfast!

  • Not a good night for the place.

Sigh, Either they had a off night or had a new chef. Croutons on salad were rock hard and stale, with an off smell like stale oil. My main with duck breast had large amounts of tendon I could not chew or swallow. Had to put in napkin. The vegetable pancake was more like a crepe, that had shredded carrot and some beet, that looked like that they had used from my husbands mixed green salad, and it was cold, I did not eat it, so I went home hungry. My husbands dinner was one with Tuna, it had some rice and veggie, but the serving of tuna was maybe an inch and a half by two inches. Basically two bites, he also went home hungry. There was another couple we knew who had a bad dining experience the same night.

we went for the Wednesday community meal; 20.00 3 course--it was the shrimp and grits; celeriac butterlettuce salad and dessert was persimmon "upside down" cake with a scoop of ice cream w/cinnamon. the shrimp was tender with a nice non=spicy sauce; grits were tasty, surrounded by some nice kale; tasty from the get-go. we all chorused "ump, ump, ump". the server was great, the host went out of his way to seat us in a nice nook even though we were only 3. the cocktail of the week $5; was a called "east of eden"; made with Bombay gin--lemon, soda, and another ingredient I don't remember--the bartenders here really know how to mix. we are always treated well. would eat there more often if I could afford it.

It seems like the kitchen is taking longer and longer to get plates out. The tempo of the meal is very slow, which I typically do not mind, but it's quite noticable. Once it arrives, the food is typically quite good. My steak on this particular occasion was a little overdone (ordered medium-rare and came out medium+), but was otherwise flavorful and everyone else's dish was good.

One consistent problem with this restaurant, is a VERY slow bartender. Be prepared to wait. The noise level is high. No offer of bread or butter and they had run out of ice. Atmosphere was disorganized. Although the food and drinks were good one of the dishes was over cooked. This could have been an opportunity to comp the meal.We have brought many a guest with us to this restaurant over the years but we are just about done spending our food dollars here Once the food arrived , it was pretty good. But $30 for a ribeye!!!

I have been there twice for lunch in the last two weeks and I don't even live there! Food is excellent and the service impeccable and attentive staff. Highly recommend this place for fabulous food and ambiance.

Which was also my birthday lunch. Only a very limited ' brunch only' menu... mostly egg dishes. It was 1pm. No salads listed... asked if available & waiter said he'd check if they could do one... I decided against it. My choice was tasty [ seafood crepes], but came on large plate with NO accompaniment, just three very small limp endive leaves. Very disappointing. The 1 dessert offered-- a rhubarb lemon curd tart-- was tasty, but runny, not firm. All in all... didn't seem like much effort went into a special occasion.

Items on the lunch menu seemed fresh and modern, but there was more promise than delivered. We liked the batter on the fish and chips, but the fish was not fresh. The beet salad was delicious, but the calamari seriously needed seasoning. It wasn't until afterward that I realized the calamari was supposed to have been tossed with a sauce and someone must have forgot it. Will give Patrona a second chance the next time we're in town.

I'm not sure they know what they want to be. From the decor to the ambience at the bar compared to the what the food and the level of service gives me the impression they're trying to get different sets of clientele in a small space. The food was decent. There were a few mishaps with our main courses. My partner had the steak and asked for it medium. It was rare. Her veg was all over the place. Some of it was slightly charred while others were raw. I had the duck special and everything was good except the sauce that was served with it. Seemed like it sat on the burner a few minutes too long. Both of our starters (mussels with white wine and a spinach salad) were excellent. The trio of chocolate was to die for...as well as the service.

Patrona's is one of the very few nice places to eat in Ukiah. Their menu selections are good and the food nicely presented. They have a smallish selection of local wines which could be expanded in light of the large number of local wineries. We had a good time and left satisfied.

We went on Valentines Day; had the couples "aphrodisiac" tasting menu. woo woo! 9 courses of love on a plate. Craig and his crew outdid themselves with this one. From oysters on the half shell, threw endive with a nice mousse; to spicy shrimp, to roe on avocado; then spicy lamb; and lovely (moist) stewy chicken breast. then there were the four dessert items. cocktails are always a winner here. had the "contrary mary" with tomato and celery "shrub" mixed with spicy vodka served in a martini glass, very nice.

We took a friend as a treat. I had asked her where she wanted, there were several other choices. she was emphatic about going to Patrona, and I was so glad, because that is where I wanted to go too (win, win;) service is always great, it is nice to be recognized and acknowledged by the staffers. They make you feel welcomed and the place is comfortable and homey. Tried one of the winter cocktails, any of them are a winner here. We tried different items from around the menu and shared tastes. that's the fun of this place. they always bring extra plates. Soups yum, salads, yum, appetizer was a panko covered shrimp cake that was enough for 3 to share, yum. cod, duck and crepes, yum, yum, yum.
