  • "...is becoming a welcome habit. Everything about it is extremely satisfying. It's most definitely worth a try to see if it is to your taste!"

  • " They make the best Greek food in the Bay Area. Octopus is hard to cook, but at Pathos it is tender and succulent. The meatballs are light and fluffy. The filo pastry has a faint taste of dill and just the right amount of spinach. Of course, the lamb dishes are our favorites for main courses. We have only eaten at Pathos twice, but we want to become regulars. The staff helps with wine selection and explains what each dish contains. They don't mind unusual orders (nothing but starters) and are willing to let guests share. Keep it up, Pathos. We want to bring in all of our friends."

  • "Still ramping up their menu but the food is great and they did a beautiful job on the place. Price point is just high enough to matter. A higher end gem on this otherwise very sad part of Shattuck Ave. "

  • "Some of what we had here was fantastic, and some just fine. Seasoning could use some work still. Portions are HUGE. Ambience of the restaurant itself is lovely and quiet."

  • "Not many good Greek restaurants around but this is one of them! Food is authentic, service was outstanding and location is easy to get to on public transportation."

  • "Business dinner - group of 10. although no private rooms, the noise level wasn't too bad and conversation was easy. The food is fantastic and the service couldn't be better. very interesting menu and the best tzatziki and homemade pita. the oven roasted sea bass and lamb chops got rave reviews from the group. many gluten free and vegetarian options. The décor is modern as you would expect - I thought the lighting was beautiful. We'll go again soon and would wholeheartedly recommend."

  • "The wife and I finally got to go try the diner over at Parhos and we were not disappointed! We got two tapas to start with our cocktails and split a half chicken for diner with a baklava for desert and the portions were perfect. Chef Nikko is in the kitchen proving his family proud. We will be back. And if you haven't stopped by yet, change your ways. Thanks Pathos for a great datenite for two foodies."

  • "We had another great dinner at Pathos with attentive yet unobtrusive service. This is becoming a favorite place for us and we have introduced Pathos to several of our friends with much success."

  • "Excellent. So happy to see this quality of food in Berkeley and the dining room is beautiful!!!!"

  • "Friends suggested this new restaurant in Berkeley and our experience upon arrival and throughout the evening was beyond expectations. The abidance is warm and inviting as was the service. We ordered nearly all the appetizers and shared everything for a wonderful tasting experience. We will certainly return with other friends to share this new and wonderful restaurant."

  • "I had dinner here with a friend on a Friday night., hoping to find an outstanding restaurant near home. Striking / decor: industrial, , bold patterns and fixtures: very handsome and pleasing. We arrived at six and could hear each other but by dessert we were shouting. Food quite good, some entrees over thirty dollars , which seemed unjustified in this neighborhood, a wasteland on the edge of Berkeley downtown. Perky, over friendly service, our conversation interrupted too frequently by "How Is everything?" Oddities: tea served in a cup without a saucer, moussaka over salted, too much nutmeg. Despite these minor complaints I would return, especially if they open for lunch."

  • "We tried Pathos for the first time on a Friday evening, with a part of 6. It was surprisingly easy to get a reservation just a few days prior. We had to make a couple last minute changes by phone, and they were very pleasant and happy to oblige. The food was excellent, service also excellent without being overbearing or pretentious. We have already recommended this place to several friends and will definitely be returning. The prices are high, but we felt it was worth it."

  • "We enjoyed a delicious, authentic Greek meal at Pathos. Ambience and service was excellent. Also, got to taste some very good Greek wine. I highly recommend this restaurant and plan to return."

  • "The warmth and intimacy of a fire cooked meal draw you in the door but that's where it stops at Pathos. The dining room decor was a moody gray and didn't tell any if the story ofGreece. Yes, at this price point I expect a dining experience not just good food. Sadly the food was equally uninspired. The starters were the best, especially the tender grilled octopus. We ordered the lamb chops and roasted fish. The chops were tender & flavorful but slightly overdone for my husband. My fish was dry and tasteless, even though it came with a sprig of roasted thyme. I understand respecting organic ingredients however a little salt and lemon would've been good. This meal was fine. Just not the joy the PR promised."

  • "None of us knew Pathos was there! Five of us wanted dinner before an event on the UC Berkeley campus. We got a feast! Five cheers for the octopus, which was tender and flavorful. The meatballs were light. The lamb chops were cooked perfectly and had a subtle flavor. Th salad had a citrus flavored dressing that drew raves. And the waitress recommended a lovely white wine (reasonably priced). Only quibble: only two desserts. We would have liked a little more to choose from."

  • "Pathos offers a new angle on Greek food. Two of us had the Triada (which included a wonderful Tzatziki and delicious pita bread that has herbs in it), Saganaki (pan-seared cheese), lamb chops, and Moussaka. We could appreciate the flavors of all the ingredients and the food was served at just right temperatures. Wait staff was smooth and attentive and knowledgeable. Will definitely go back."

  • "The food at Pathos is delicious. We over ordered because it all looked so good. It has a lovely ambiance and great service. The cocktails our creative and worth the trip."

  • "We enjoyed the dining experience itself, but all of the dishes didn't come up to expectations. The soup was wonderful, as was the octopus and salad. However, the spanakapeda (sp.?), mousaka, and meatballs were as good as we've had at other times."

  • "Food was excellent, service very attentive and helpful, with several kinks worked out from when we visited during Opening Week. The restaurant is beautifully done, but it's a little too dark once the sun sets, and the menu seems printed in very faint ink. Worst of all there are no prices anywhere except on the entrees. Prices were reasonable once the bill came, but their absence on the menu made me a little nervous."

  • "I loved this restaurant. I thought the food was outstanding !! I will return again. Only negative, the table for two was very small. Could only get one appetizer served at a time. Otherwise very, very good."

  • "This has become an instant hit for Berkeley, a city with lots to choose from. Reservations are a must as it is so popular. We have been here twice and have had excellent meals each time. The resturant design is simple, comfortable and beautiful, as is the food and the presentation. The Moussaka was the lightest, most flavorful I have ever had. On our second visit we had the Lamb Chops and Lavraki, sea-bass with lemon-saffron butter and capers, again both were excellent. We will definitely becoming back often."

  • "While the food was delicious and setting very nice, we felt the prices were undeservedly high."

  • "So hard to find high-end Greek--Kokkari, right? Best item were the cocktails. Everything else was fine but only okay. Fried smelts were a bit gritty. Gigante beans only okay. Only dessert was baklava which is silly. Service was nice but just adequate--forgot to come back to take our wine order. Too expensive for the quality. The decor is nice."

  • "We went to Pathos on Saturday night with friends visiting from out of town and we were blown away! Every dish was outstanding and Fred, the maitre d' and pseudo sommelier, was friendly, warm, and welcoming. We hugged on our way out the door. Will be back soon! From the pita and salads plate (with the best tzatziki ever!) to the octopus to the whole roasted fish, moussaka and lamb chops to die for, nothing disappointed!"

  • "1. the menus were printed so faintly, we could barely read them 2. my beet salad was uninspired 3. a fellow diner found the octopus too hard and tasteless 4. how could a Greek restaurant already be out of Mousaka by 7:15 PM, which is when we ordered 5. my chicken entrée was spiced well but was a little dry and the roasted potatoes were overdone 6. Both fellow diners thought the Sea Bass entrées were OK but little bones in every bite 7. the coffee served was lukewarm and another pot needed to be brewed after we complained 8. lastly, when making the reservation, I noted that this was a ‘birthday celebration’; never was their an acknowledgement of this by the staff 9. It is an expensive restaurant; making this a poor value."

  • "RElaxed atmosphere and friendly service. White greek wine paired with sea bass was just perfect! The soups were delicious. Menu is not extensive - actually makes the choice easier. Both the lamb and sea-bass entrees were very good. We tried the grilled Octopus appetizer, but it was not my favorite - I was expecting something like the calamari, but this was an octopus tentacle..ask if you are not sure - the waitress was very good. I would definitely come back again!"

  • "It's a combination I've never found until now. The food is delicious, as are the cocktails. Eating responsibly is important to me, and it is great to have a place where I can have a quality, well-prepared dinner that I can feel good about. The staff are all very friendly and welcoming. Give it a try!"

  • "it is hard to find places to go with my sicilian vegan partner, but pathos offers a few nice vegan sides and salads, even a soup, on its menu; their one vegan entre was okay--flavor good, but the rice mushy."

  • "We had a fabulous dinner on Saturday 3/1. Notable was the grilled octopus -- small portion; it was so good, we wanted more! Excellent spanakopita, lamb chops, and moussaka. Wine was reasonable and good as well (Jeriko pinot noir from Mendocino area). We will definitely go back. The restaurant has a nice, long bar which looked quite inviting, but was underused the night we were there."

  • "Appetizers are fabulous as are the lamb chops! Fish has wonderful flavor but all those little bones can get annoying. Love it and look forward to returning."

  • "You need to like Greek food. Otherwise, we found the octopus tender but relatively tastelss. One side of the tentacle was actually kind of slimy. The soup (lemon rice) had very little flavor. The smelt had tons of crunchy sensations which felt and tasted like sand. For folks used to California wines, Green wines that we tasted as flat. We'd gone based on the Yelp reviews but were quite disappointed. And it's pricey."

  • "Our first impression of Pathos was very positive: a very friendly welcome and an upscale fresh look. When we asked to taste two red wines, our waiter brought them and when we didn't like those wines he brought us other red ones to try. Very nice. However, the menu was hard to decipher: much of it in Greek without explanation. We ordered an appetizer of three different Greek spreads that were ok, not great that came with pita bread that was too chewy. Our main dishes were less than spectacular.. The moussaka came room temperature and had little flavor. The same was true for my vegetarian stuffed peppers. While the manager/maitre d' was eager and nice, I was surprised to see the wait staff talked among themselves and was not attentive to us."

  • "So good to have a high end Greek restaurant in the East. Bay. The cocktails are great. Excellent Manhattan! The whole fish and lamb. Chops were cooked perfectly. Baklava the is not too sweet-- a gem. Can't wait to go back. Oh and the octopus sooo tender"

  • "Saturday evening myshelf and 3 others we went to PATHOS. First , we had a great server a young lady named Peru, that was just fantastic. We were all of us satisfied with the ambience of the place. The atmosphere was wonderful. . The octopus was stunning. Tender, well seasoned, and with an aroma that smelled fresness. The Marides were fried to perfection. The Gigandes, were better than the ones my giagia was making. But what top everything was the sea bass that I had for my main cource. That was a plate for a king. The aroma of rosemary, the white rice, and the capers were very well presented. The fish was cooked to perfection. I recomend PATHOS, to every one that knows about excellent food."

  • "the dishes are very creative. could stand to have a little more selections. the entrees are a little overpriced. but the food is delicious. they didn't serve fresh bread before the meal—I guess greeks don't do that. and there was only one dessert—baklava. the waiter was slow on checking on our water glasses. there were three of us sharing one bottle and that was all we were drinking. I had to ask for more and he never brought the ice I had asked for."

  • "If I only used adjectives I would describe Pathos's food and atmosphere as "tasteful, natural, calming and well-thought out". The interior and the bar are designed using natural stone, glass and marble in earth and dark aqua palette. The bar is thoughtfully stocked with quality wines and liquors. The food is sourced from organic local farms, and the octopus and smelts are freshly imported from Greece! We had octopus and dolmates appetizers, and Niman Ranch lamb chops, followed by a dessert of coffee, baclava, and Greek muscat wine. This is how the Greek food tastes at its source, at home. The taste of home made baclava and muscat was the perfect ending to a wonderful Valentines day dinner. Bravo, Pathos!"
