This was our first time here. We got the name from the Berkeley Rep and didn't have any specific expectations. The food was excellent, from appetizers through dessert (we had all 3). I would never have ordered the "big beans", not my usual. However, someone else at the table ordered and we all loved it! The 1/2 chicken was flavorful and not dry at all. The fish was excellent (eat it with the skin, which had all the spices on it). If you arrive early, you can sit at the table by the window and people watch. We plan to return!

Pathos is in a class by itself because every dish it prepares is perfect. Not many restaurants can serve octopus correctly: tender and flavorful down to the last bite. The dolmas are served warm and taste unique. The appetizer meatballs are light. One problem my husband and I have when we dine here: what main courses to order. This time we opted for chicken and lamb, but in the past we have had the fish. No matter---all entrees are cooked perfectly and served with yummy potatoes and a vegetable. Oh, and the dessert of rolled filo and cheese with preserves is a must. Save a little room, and share it with a friend. Pathos is one of the best restaurants in the Bay Area.

First time for dinner at lovely Pathos, and won't be my last! I love Greek food and took a friend there who was visiting. We shared the lamb chops and sea bass - both incredible! The lamb was the most tender and juicy that I have ever experienced, and with a wonderful flavor. Presentation was delightful. Table service by Peru was warm, knowledgable, helpful, and gracious (will request her in the future). Even the manager stopped by twice to see how we liked the food and wine. He was cheerful and gracious. Pathos is a "keeper" and my new favorite Greek Restaurant. Plan to take "hubby" there soon.

Thus was our fourth time at the restaurant. It was very good the first time and has gotten appreciably better each time. We had an excellent meal and superb service. I couldn't recommend it more highly. And, each time the manager talked with me about our meal and experience for any feedback. I'm of Greek descent so I'm very critical about Greek food and I have nothing but praise for the food and sevice at Pathos.

My wife and I had dinner here last weekend. The ambiance is outstanding, really - nice lighting, decor, service. Their cocktails are inventive and not too heavy. We had an appetizer each, and the lamb and moussaka. Everything was fresh, light and very good. The one criticism we have is the price point - the lamb was $37 a plate, and for not that much lamb, and accompanied by spinach and potatoes that matched what I got with the moussaka. It's really much too high for this type of food.

My partner is Greek so we have a high bar when it comes to Greek food. Highlights were the eggplant, hummus, yoghurts, etc. Delicious, smoky flavors. The chicken was perfect, lemony oregano tenderness. The lamb chop was disappointing, good, but no raves at our table. Few options for fish lovers -- it was only 7 pm, but we were told they were already "sold out" of the fish of the day. The smelt appetizer, was too salty, chewy, fishy, we could not eat it -- needed a subtler fry. The dolmas have meat in them-- a meatless version would be a good addition. The heirloom salad was also not available, they should create another "greek" salad when tomatoes are not in season. But we generally enjoyed the food and will try it again!

Friends had told us about Pathos and we finally made it. Service was friendly and I like the somewhat sophisticated ambience. The food was very good -- best quality Greek food I've had in the East Bay. A great deal of attention is paid to ingredients and preparation. The prices are high -- I hadn't expected to pay $80/person and will order more carefully when we go back.

We had 7:45 dinner reservationf, our table not ready stood by door for a while until someone suggested sitting at bar until table was ready, took a while, waited for about 15 to 20 mins until some one took our order at table, they ran out if sea bass I'm vegetarian, my salad was given to the table next to me, our appetizer was the wrong order given to us, not a very good experience, but what we had was good, might return

Greek food - spectacular at times, generally mediocre (or worse) in restaurants. Pathos gave an excellent, elevated Greek experience. This is a beautiful restaurant. Everything was delicious, even for our world traveler guest and our teen. Service was friendly and efficient. The menu was small, which may have focused the kitchen. Personally, I would expand the dessert list given the abundance of Greek desserts. We had avgolemonno, dolma, octopus w/red onion/capers, spanakopita, stuffed pepper, fried smelt w/lemon & capers, a sm. fried cheese appetizer, pita w/feta & olives, baklava, a yoghurt dessert, and a cannoli-ish Greek pastry. The only negative for us was that everything was more expensive than expected.

Given its neighbors (car dealership, Dollar Store, etc.) Pathos was a wonderful surprise in terms of ambiance, and quality of food and service. The decor featured Greek urns, rough walls, huge rustic mirrors and geometric patterns in the fabrics. It created warmth in what otherwise could have been a sterile or industrial space. The staff was solicitous and knowledgeable. Their Tzatziki was startlingly fresh and bright, the feta was pink (!) and tart, and the homemade pita warm and complementary. The moussaka was the best we've ever had, rich and aromatic with hints of clove, cinnamon and allspice. The lamb chops were tender and perfectly grilled, the sides simply prepared to highlight their quality. Will definitely recommend to others.

Our dinner last saturday night after the Cal football game at Pathos was very good. The restaurant, new to us, has a very nice ambiance and our group of 6 was very happy with our meal. If I had to criticize anything, it would be that that Pathos is very expensive considering the size of the portions for both appetizers and entree's. Our server, Anya(?) was fantastic and she helped guide us through choices from start to finish including 2 excellent wine selections.

We went for our anniversary dinner and let them know that thru a note when we booked using opentable. They gave us the most private table, The food was excellent, and the service was friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and and attentive without being intrusive. We had two appetizers (octopus and eggplant) and two mains (mousakka and sea bass) and all were great. It's airy and not noisy like so many places where you can't hear your dinner companion. We had no difficulty talking, no shouting required. Recognizing it was our anniversary they brought us a wonderful piece of baklava with a candle at the end of meal. A really nice touch. The whole dinner was great.

The ambiance of this restaurant is lovely, intimate but lively, and not at all stuffy. The octopus appetizer and moussska main dish were delightful. The remainder was ok but not great. The pita was not oven fresh but wood-oven reheated. Why? The dessert, fillo dough with custard, was mediocre. But it is a lovely space! I did not try the bar, which seemed promising. They had some interesting beer.

The folks at Pathos seem genuinely interested in providing a first-rate dining experience. We went there to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary--our second visit. As with the first, the grilled octopus as a starter is excellent, and the moussaka is to die for. The only disappointment was the heirloom tomato salad: halved mini-heirlooms that might've been purchased at Safeway and a strictly average vinaigrette. But the ambience on a Wednesday evening was quiet and elegant, the service is excellent--it's just a pleasant place to be.

I love this place! I like it when I return several times to a restaurant and the owner or manager welcomes my party as if we're old friends. Love the decor--elegant and simple, not at all overbearing. I feel comfortable wearing jeans, but would also dress up. The staff seems happy to be there--always a plus. The menu is simple but every single dish is special. I love a place where I can have a conversation without shouting.

My friend and I had the Htapodi (grilled octopus, pickled onions, fried capers, and dill), Spanakopita, and Wood Oven Lavraki (whole grilled sea bass). The food was whimsical and delicious. The octopus was succulent, the capers burst in your mouth and added a slight crunch, and the pickled red onion provided the vinegar flavor to round off the dish. The Lavraki was tender. loved the ambiance and vibe. The food was middle of the road. Had the heirloom tomatoes which were over-saturated with balsamic. Pita bread was fantastic. Avgo lemono soup (egg lemon soup). It was good, but nothing special. Chicken soup with a little lemon in it. Entre of Red Pepper stuffed with rice with Niman beef. Nothing to say about it really. It was rice with some beef. No real flavor of any note to it. Just some rich and beef in a pepper. Also, Lamb Meatballs. Just as described, a lamb meatball in run of the mill tomato sauce. Only one of us had a glass of wine. No desert, bill was about $100. If Im spending $100 on a dinner for two people, I expect a lot more than we we experienced.

I normally do not write reviews, but really feel this restaurant deserves one. The waitress was attentive, the wine she recommended was fantastic - in fact all her recommendations were phenomenal. I just can't say enough about the quality of the food. I recommend the lamb chops the first time you go- you will be hooked! But I think you really can't go wrong with anything you choose. I can't wait to go back. I am a world traveler, grew up in Hong Kong, Vancouver, Toronto, New York, Germany and have visited every continent of the world- trust me when I say that this is a great find (just moved here from the east coast). If you want a great restaurant with a great family feel and appreciate finer food then this is the place for you. Enjoy!

From the first sip of the highly creative (and totally satisfying) cocktails, to the last taste of the wonderful understated dessert, Pathos was a 10. We knew it would be Greek, but we didn't know it would be at the level of Chez Panisse. Forget any prejudices you might have about Greek food being boring, simple, heavy, or somehow stale. Even the most traditional of Greek dishes at Pathos have been transformed & elevated to the Wow level — while still being true the Greek idea that ingredients should be local and fresh. And don't be afraid to order the Greek wines, which are chosen with great taste (and represent real value). Can't wait to return!

Beautiful Greek restaurant in Berkeley with excellent food. Saganaki and lamb meatball appetizers were excellent. Avgolemono soup was a little bland and not lemony enough, but was the only slightly disappointing item we tried. Lamb chops were outstanding-tender, juicy, perfectly cooked. Moussaka also was excellent. Baklava was light and not sticky, my favorite baklava I've had, and bougatsa was fantastic. Also tried an excellent red wine made locally but of Greek grape blended with cab sauv etc., and the winemaker happened to be at the restaurant, which was fun. Prices are moderately high, but worth it! Service was very friendly and knowledgeable. Will definitely go back-may be a new favorite!!

My friend and I delighted in the perfectly seasoned red bell peppers stuffed with ground beef and rice in the relaxed but polished ambiance. The portions were pleasantly generous. I'd return, probably for a special occasion and would definitely seek the baklava--the only one I've ever had that wasn't overly sweet. I'd go more often if it weren't so pricey. One couldn't order a simple cup of coffee--it comes by the pot. At $6.00 that's going overboard for one person.
