Diner Reviews
  • "My husband and I visited the Hula Girl pop up on Saturday night. Although we had reservations for dinner, we only stayed for a drink after EVERY wait person in the restaurant walked by our table after we were seated and didn't acknowledge us. After flagging down a waiter, we ordered a drink from a server who didn't make eye contact at all. The drink was good, but expensive. We left after that and the hostess said thanks for coming. That was the most anyone spoke to us last night. Perhaps the food was good, but unless the service vastly improves, they should stick to being a food truck."

  • "Crispy pork skin is phenomenal! You can't get enough of the malasadas. I want to go back for the loco moco. Although it's a little on The pricey side, quite understandable because it's a niche market and the location is very accessible in a chic neighborhood."

  • "If you love authentic Hawaiian grindz or are looking for something new and different in DC, say aloha to go to Hula Girl! The loco moco and malasadas are a must!"

  • "Hula Girl is a unique find. Get that taste of Hawaii and pretend you are there. Screens on the wall were of surfing rather than basketball. I wish is was not just a popup in Cleveland Park."

  • "So happy that Hula Truck got a pop up!! Got a chance to sit down and enjoy the food I love from the food truck, but on a different scale & with a Blue Hawaiin drink! Enjoyed a few spam masubi's, kalua pork & cabbage, poke, and teriyaki steak & chicken. All delicious and great staff too!"

  • "Get ready for the Hula Girl storefront! Awesome drinks & food, this pop-up was everything. Certainly not fine dining, but everything exceeded expectations for brunch. Gotta get back before the hiatus!"

  • "From Food Truck to pop-up, this is the start of something big for Hulagirl and DC. The standard plate lunches, poke and spam musubi, is Island food done right. The cocktails also have a Hawaiian twist and are a must try. Don't forget that Hulagirl Bar and Grill is a pop-up and ends in mid March. If you miss it, you'll hace to wait for their permanent location or the next lunch stop in the District once the Hulagirl Truck gets back on the road."

  • "It's been hard finding good Hawaiian food in DC. As a fan of the food truck, I was excited to taste her food in a restaurant setting. It was well worth the trek. Everything we tasted was delicious. My favorite was the poke. My husband loved the chili."

  • "Street truck turned into neighborhood gem! We have visited the new Hula Girl restaurant a few times since her truck went out. The food is hot, fresh and delicious Hawaiian cuisine. Served in a friendly and inviting environment. Will def dine again!!"

  • "It was extremely deceiving that they changed Pulp to Hula Girl and did not let any patron's know this. We arrived at brunch thinking that we were going to have all you can eat tapas and all you can drink cocktails- we were very surprised and disappointed in this brunch."

  • "I made a reservation to visit Pulpo with a group of friends from college. I was surprised to call the day before and learn about the Hula Girl popup, but don't hesitate to try out the new chef! We had a great brunch experience, everything was delicious. One of my friends happened to be from Hawaii, and was thrilled to try some favorites from home with Hula Girl's twist. I would highly recommend the tropical mimosas and the chili!"

  • "In between the time we made the reservation for valentines day and the day itself, the restaurant closed, and turned the space over to a food truck. So when we showed up, they honored out "reservation" but the menu was not what we expected. It definitely was not the quality or type food we expected (it was fine bit nothing remarkable.). Very disappointed with the experience."

  • "So I made the reservation for Pulpo, which was confirmed online. When we got there, the restaurant, Pulpo, had closed, and a pop up Hawaiian Food Truck restaurant was there, they had my reservations, but I wasn't looking for a Hawaiian Food Truck pop up restaurant experience. The food turned out to be fine, but transparency from Open table, informing patrons of what restaurant they actually reserves a table for, would be nice."

  • "The ownership of this establishment is terrible. The worst I've ever encountered. If you do decide to venture to Pulpo, make sure to sit at the bar and receive some wonderful service from Hilary. Hilary's service was the only saving grace to our brunch experience."

  • "We came in for the bottomless brunch and our server did a fairly good job keeping our drinks refreshed. However, the food took absolutely forever to come out and was far too small and sporadic."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "The best part about eating there is that it's a reasonable pre-fixe all you can eat and drink, however when the service is poor and the waiter is neglectful/forgetful, it makes the experience not worth it. Perhaps it's because they include the tip (even when it's just two people) that he wasn't really willing to work hard. Four of our dishes never showed up and they were out of a number of items. It was also extremely slow. We were there for 3 hours, but not because we wanted to be. In any case, the French Toast was good, but the rest was very mediocre. Mimosas were good. Hostess was very nice and helpful. It may have been an off day for them because I've had friends recommend this place in the past, but I won't be going back."

  • "I have gone there before for their all you can eat brunch and it was great. This time, not so much. Our waitress took about 15 minutes even seeing us, then she was incapable of taking a drink order and a food order at the same time. I was a waitress all through college, this is NOT that hard. Then when we were ready to order food she stopped taking our order and said she would just bring us out a bunch of stuff to try. We immediately said this is not what we want. We didn't like some of the menu options. She took down our order but then just did what she wanted anyway. Literally we sat there for 3 hours with maybe 5 plates of food? None of it what we ordered. The kitchen was just bringing random plates to tables.I will never go there again!"

  • "I had been to Pulpo once before in 2012 on accident after the restaurant my friend and I were looking for was closed. Honestly one of the best brunch places I have found in a long time. The atmosphere is young, hip and vibrant. Bottomless mimosas and bloody's and delicious tapas style food. I have not made it for any other occaision other than brunch unfortunately, but I am looking forward to experiencing it soon."

  • "I am bummed to be writing this review -- I have been to Pulpo 7-8 times and it used to be great. However, the last two times I have been (once for dinner and once for brunch) the food has been nothing better than "okay" and the service has been severely lacking. I don't think I'll be going back anytime in the near future."

  • "food was good. I was with several people who had food restrictions so ordering the tapas style food to share was a bit challendging since they menu was small but the sever did his best to help up with what they could modify."

  • "Love the owner! He was so hospitable and we felt very well taken care of, even if the rest of the service was a little slow"

  • "We arrived at about 6pm for dinner on a Friday. While the place wasn't empty, there were only a few other patrons. However, it was early. Both the service and the food were very good. Please try one (or more) of the octupus dishes. The brussel sprouts with bacon were very good and the portion was large enough for two. The pork belly, scallops, and other dishes were not large enough to share, but the portions are sufficient for one. Everyone enjoyed all of the dishes we ordered. They were having a special on bottles of wine. Sadly, I could not take advantage of it because I was the only one drinking. I look forward to a return visit so that I can try the other items on the menu."

  • "This was the worst brunch ever! We didn't get 90% of the items ordered, my friend asked for a soda 3 times & never got it, we ordered another round of drinks which I had to get from the bar, ALL the food was cold, we watched the Chef walk out the front door to smoke and buy groceries, our potato wedges were potato salad, we asked our waiter what items were on the next table & he didn't know, we asked for items on the side and we didn't get them at all, we ordered an ahi tuna melt that was served with canned tuna and a stale piece of cheese, asked to talk to a manager & he said he was kind of the manager, Chef came out almost yelling at us when we told him the issues, every table in the restaurant was unhappy (we could hear them talking)."

  • "I've been to Pulpo in the past and it was delicious. This time around... Things were over salted, too saucy ( and not authentic sauce , but like sauces from a can) then the pan con tomate was absolutely HORRIBLE. It was literally white wonder bread with a can of tomato sauce on it. It was so soggy and shocking that the kitchen even served it to is. What happened?? In the past the pan con tomate was real thick crispy French bread, so I don't know if the kitchen ran out... Or if he restaurant truly thinks their pan con tomate is good? Who serves wonder bread at a restaurant and charges people??? The alcohol selection is great and the service was very good. This place has potential, but the food tastes fake."

  • "Going here for brunch sounds like a great idea- all you can eat and all you can drink for $25. They waitstaff kept bringing out food we didn't order and not bringing out what we actually ordered. An hour into our meal we asked again for her to bring the French toast and she told us they were all out of it... If she'd put the order in when we asked I'm sure that wouldn't have happened. Next time, I'll make sure to read the yelp reviews before I decide to go anywhere."

  • "Expecting to be transported back to Barcelona for a retro dining experience, I was disappointed. For a restaurant that identifiies itself as Pulpo (Octopus), we were excited to try all three ocotpus dishes. The smoked octopus was tough (too much smoke), roasted octupus was underseasoned, and although Ithe sauted octopus was palatable, my husband did not care for at all. We also ordered "okay" mussels, shrimp, and calamari. Brownie cheesecake desert was presented as hard brownies with a dolop of some cheeselike mousse. Had early dinner reservations, and were put a a very small table by the wall, despite the fact there we plenty of unoccupied tables for four (during the entire time we stayed there). Sorry, but would never go back."

  • "I arrived at noon for Sunday brunch, which begins at 11. Our server was asked for coffee three times; never received it the entire meal. The menu was out of several items, only an hour into service. The Yelp reviews I read highlighted several things on the brunch menu which I never got to try because the kitchen was out of those items. Plates were brought to the table without explanation; we weren't sure what some things were, or if we had even ordered them. The food itself, what we had of it, tasted good, but it was clear that they needed another server to help and that the kitchen was just pumping out whatever food they had. Our server WAS very nice, and he apologized profusely, so I don't blame him at all (except for coffee order)."

  • "For $25, it's not a bad brunch, especially with bottomless mimosas! That said, I wish the food was warmer when it came out. I get that the kitchen probably just cook a little of everything and leaves it for the table service to get, given their style of "bring some of everything to your table," but it was just not fun to eat cool polenta. That said, I wouldn't be opposed to going back, as it's only $25."

  • "Unfortunate horrible experience. They are clearly not equipped to handle a full restaurant. Our server was also bartending and greeting, bussing tables, and seating guests. Not sufficient organization or waitstaff. After 50 minutes a dinish finally appeared (quinoa and wild rice) and the rice was completely uncooked. After that we spoke to our server and left. He was smart enough to not argue with us about the problems but it begs the question of why they even try to serve food when they are clearly not equipped. Dont bring visiting guests.. its an embarrassment. Perhaps they can handle a restaurant that is at 10% capacity on a tuesday night, but dont try a weekend."

  • "Unfortunately the kitchen staff walked out on the day I invited friends for bottomless brunch. Our server tried hard, but to no avail. Left feeling disappointed, especially since my first experience had been so fun."

  • "My first time trying Pulpo and I did enjoy the number of small plates. My guests and I had a number of cheeses, shrimp, lamb sliders, mussels small plates. Each one was really good. our drinks were good also. Will be back."

  • "We were disappointed by Pulpo's brunch options. The ahi tuna was prepared in a way that we weren't expecting (appeared more like albacore is often prepared). We found this dish as well as the rest of the brunch menu very disappointing."

  • "We went early on NYE. Our server was great! He was attentive, personable, funny. The food was good - as some other reviewers mentioned they didn't have 3 things on their menu. The other things were good, some great…but it was VERY expensive. We didn't order that much, had 3 drinks, and spent $50pp plus tip. Was shocked! Probably wouldn't go back because the price for what you got wasn't worth it."
    Dined on 12/31/2013
  • "Price is excellent and food is supreme. I prefer to pick my own items then the chef just bring things, but my friend love that. Either way, we left very happy and satisfied!! Only thing I don't like is the lack of parking, but that's not their fault."
    Dined on 12/29/2013
  • "The food was sub-par. A lot of egg based dishes, not much variety, and all came out way too fast so food cooled off when you were ready to try the next dish. I have been to many prix-fixe brunches in DC and the food didn't wow me like most. The one plus was the drink menu for bottomless included the full bar! So get your drink on here. I am glad the price was on the low end ($25) because this place did not exceed any expectations. We had a wonderful server however, whom was very fun, nice and there when we need him!"

  • "I have been to Pulpo before and liked it, but this time around was disappointing. The staff was friendly overall and generally brought our food in a timely manner, but when we sat down they just started bringing dishes with no explanation. and when we told them we had not ordered the food they said they just brought us food and if we wanted to order we could. We also would ask what certain dishes were and some of the servers didn't really explain or say. Honestly the quality of the food seems to have declined as well, and while I understand bringing out dishes on an all you can eat system, it might be better if they have diners order more rather than just bringing things out."

  • "Brunch this past weekend was my third trip up to Cleveland Park to enjoy a meal at Pulpo - and it was great! There is a reasonable set price for anything you want to eat and drink. The food: I highly recommend the hash (so good - our waiter proactively brought us an extra). The quinoa and polenta were also really good. There were a few switches (the flatbread ended up being served on an english muffin and they were out of the wheatberry salad) but our server gave us the appropriate heads up and offered other suggestions. The drinks: Our glasses were never empty while we were there. The service: The service was timely and attentive (see drinks) and our food was served with the right touch of personality."
